Cornette shoots on Russo

10 minutes into this clip, Cornette sums up why, and everything I dislike about Russo and his attitude towards wrestling:

To be fair, it's not like Cornette is exactly running a successful promotion these days himself.

Comments

  1. Cornette is still right in this case though, despite his current ROH failings.

  2. I can't watch the video at work.

But Jesus, Cornette is a sad little man.  Russo's not even in THE BIZNIZZ any more, is he?  Find a new gimmick Jimbo.

  3.  He gets more of the blame for ROH failing than he deserves, IMO. He's the creative force but he doesn't make all the decisions. Cary writes the paychecks, and Delirious decides what matches are going on when, and I think Delirious is a lot of the reason why nothing ever blows off, because he keeps trying to milk everything for too long.

  4. It's from 2010

  5. You know, despite all the nonsense storylines, the asinine swerves, and the ridiculous gimmicks, the thing about Russo that sets me off the most will always be his complete misunderstanding of gimmick matches and when and how to use them.

    I just don't get it.

  6. I watched the part recommended by the emailer and it's pretty spot on, though it's kind of irrelevant now. If you can't watch, Cornette thinks Russo hates wrestling and tries to change it through shitty drama, not unlike the Claire Lynch stuff. Given his disdain for matches over 5 minutes, it's hard to argue.

Again this isn't very relevant now, though.

  7. Delirious wants everyone to be Dean Malenko.

    Dean Malenko doesn't sell tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Russo is buffoon. Cornette is a child.

    ReplyDelete
  9.  Thank goodness the Briscoes were grandfathered in.

The rest of the faces in ROH are as bland as dry toast.

    ReplyDelete
  10. :You think Steen is bland?

    ReplyDelete
  11. TBF Cornette has had a lot less to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sinclair Broadcast Group owns ROH now, not Cary.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Steen is the heel!

Miscast as the heel maybe, but he's still the heel.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Honestly he's better off still being a "heel" because that makes him so over.  Turning him into a clear face might backfire.

    ReplyDelete
  15. He's still executive producer and head of Ring of Honor as a company.

  16. To expand upon the point I've been making lately: Cornette seems to be getting the sole focus of people's anger for the storyline problems of ROH. I've heard people go as far as to ask whether Cornette would get ownership of the ROH catalog when they fold, even though he doesn't own the company. The story most people have heard is, since Sinclair took over, Cornette has been running the whole thing from the ground up. This came from Steve Corino in a shoot interview. Not to sound like Chad Bryant, but is there any chance Corino was just working us there? He would have known he had a storyline reason upcoming to be against Cornette and make everyone think that Cornette is synonymous with ROH. Meanwhile Delirious is still listed in most places as their head matchmaker. The scenario I've heard which seems more accurate is that Cornette comes up with ideas for storylines, Delirious hammers out the details and makes individual matches, and Cary oversees them. It certainly makes more sense than the idea that Cornette, who maybe was never an all time great booker on his own but certainly knew SOMETHING about booking wrestling and would certainly have a clearer idea of how to make storylines move along than what ROH is showing these days. So I think that he came up with all the storylines but Delirious was responsible for the matchmaking, and he's the one that's making them stretch out for so goddamn long. As for who they push, I think everyone that gets pushed has someone else's ear in different ways, but that hasn't been ALL bad.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Isn't Corino kinda notorious for working his "shoot" interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that's more a case of Jericho just being an incredibly hated heel, not Dean.  Yes, Dean held his end of the bargain in the ring, but I think his spot was replaceable.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Truer statement hasn't been spoken, or typed in this case.

Give Cornette the WWE roster for 4 months and watch some magic happen, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "To be fair, it's not like Cornette is exactly running a successful promotion these days himself. "

To be fair, it's not like if Cornette was replaced with someone else, it's not like the show would instantly get 100x better.

  21. When did Cornette stop booking for the WWF?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I miss these Cornette shoots, I can listen the guy rant on for hours

    ReplyDelete
  23.  For the most part agreed, but it helped that Malenko's character was established as a guy who was one of the best wrestlers in WCW (technically) and not an emotional guy - it was a bigger deal when a guy like him finally snapped and beat the shit out of Jericho. But for the most part you're right, Jericho was such a dick at that point anyone he edged on to that extent would've got a good reaction.

  24. I would pay good money to hear Cornette shoot on the WWE these days, specifically Raw 1000...

    http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/trending/post/_/id/5179/social-media-wwe-celebrates-1000th-raw

"During the broadcast, fans will submit photos, videos and comments via social media platforms. The best of those social media submissions will be incorporated into the live broadcast. According to Hoch, via social media, fans also will “get a say in what happens next by deciding matches, stipulations and character development. They can control if a general manager gets fired or who their favorite superstar’s next opponent will be."

I guess we are living in a universe where Cyber Sunday never happened

  25. Ok, that's a great point.  I remember laughing so hard when Mr. Stoic and serious Dean Malenko finally snapped on Jericho.  His gimmick played into the angle.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I dont remember, but with the WWF/E, it's hard to pin point what gets on TV that Vince hasn't come up with himself or changed before air.  I would love for someone like Cornette to get that roster sans Vince.  I actually think today's WWE roster is darn good, just not the way they're booked or how so many guys don't have any kind of gimmick to differentiate them from others.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think he ever booked WWF. He was just an on air talent. He did book OVW for a while when it was a their developmental group.

    ReplyDelete
  28.  According to Bret Hart, Cornette booked most of the 1997 US vs Canada feud, and he had other bits here and there.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cornette was on WWE's creative team from mid 1996 to late 1997. Though before 1996 and after 1997 he worked as road agent/producer. Cornette's most famous angle was bringing in Kane to Bad Blodd 97, ripping the cage off and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  30.  God, this is so dumb on a million levels.  This is akin to a TV show letting fans decide what's going to happen to the characters.  WTF?  On what planet does that make any sense?  Sure, we bitch about booking and angle outcomes, but I would still prefer that THEY write the show.  That's, umm, what they get paid for.  I hope it's all a facade and not a booking reality.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I loved Cornette's rant on Eric Bischoff a couple of years ago when he kept repeatedly calling him "Bitchoff" the whole time lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It dont matter, Corny still goes on about Russo til this day.

Its the same for the NWA guys about Jim Herd.

    LET IT GO.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cornette's a really smart guy, he's one of my favorite guys to listen to talk about the industry...but I always think of that Batman: TAS title when I think of Jim Cornette: "If You're So Smart, How Come You're Not Rich?" He makes a lot of sense when shooting then makes a lot of inane decisions on his own part when running something.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To piggyback just watch the Kayfabe Commentaries Youshoot with Jim Cornette and the Timeline 1997 by the same guys with Cornette.

Tells you all you need to know Cornette in the WWF.

Fuj recommends the youshoot 4 hours long and also watch the "lost questions" as well. another 1.5 hrs. Great shit.

  35. AJ is a wrestler and to not consider her one is an insult.

    ReplyDelete
  36. easy answer: because that's two pair of shoes. there are a lot of marriage counselors that are not able to succeed in having their own working relationship. doesn't mean they can't be excellent in pointing out where other couples' problems lie and how they might fix them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. and "buffoon" is an amazing word.

    ReplyDelete
  38. and there's a whole lot of difference between having ONE Dean Malenko in your promotion (or: your division) or DOZENS.

    ReplyDelete
  39.  Did he mean Eve? I thought AJ was Asian.

    ReplyDelete
  40. She's a wwe diva. Calling her a wrestler is insulting to...wrestlers

    ReplyDelete
  41. So Beth Phoenix, Natalya, and Sara Del Ray aren't "wrestlers" by your definition?  Seriously what an ass-backwards thought process.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Aj is a model. How many matches has she even been in? 12? Probably not even that many. The rest of them are only used to let the crowd get over a hot match. I'll give you that they "wrestle" each other if you can call it that. But they employed to be sold in calendars and used as models. They aren't really wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  43. AJ Lee started wrestling in 2007, a year and a half before joining WWE.  She's had a few more matches than "12" and IMO is a good worker.

    ReplyDelete
  44. AJ Lee was wrestling for at least three years before she signed with WWE. Do some research before you post.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow if she's been "wrestling" for that long she must really suck. Can't just dismiss her as being too green. She was hired to be a model/actress btw, and isn't treated as a serious competitor by the company that she works for. Also thanks for doing research for me on a wwe diva, thats probably something I wouldn't get around to in 10 lifetimes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well we knew for sure she wasn't a Canadian, what with her lack of wrestling talent and all.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You're an asshat.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nah, I'm pretty sure he's just trolling.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Guy has over 1100 posts, that's a dedicated troll.

    ReplyDelete
  50.  Ah. I guess the "Lee" thing threw me off, although that's not her real name of course.

    ReplyDelete
  51.  Yeah, her real name is April Mendez.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Test was canadian, no one on god's green earth would call him a good wrestler.

Go back to doing what your user name describes you as.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Losing a wrestling match? Troll me MOAR!
