I talk as much shit about Hogan as anybody but he goes out of his way to not brush of Aries or make him look like a joke. Which should go without saying considering Aries is the champ, but it's such a common thing in WWE that it feels revelatory in TNA.
Well this week it sounds like Bully Ray in the A&8s mask. It's probably just a red herring, same as Joe was when it was really clear he was in it. All this leads me to believe that whoever it is will have to be some kind of fat guy.
Sounds like Aces & Eights is turning into yet another Hot New Angle With Promise that starts to fizzle after several weeks, when it becomes obvious that nobody has really thought out where they are going with it.

I know what you mean. Say what you will about Hogan but he obviously understands wrestling. Hasn't been the best at putting what's best for others ahead of what's best for himself, but it's not because he doesn't know any better...which might make his WCW days even worse, but it's a positive thing for TNA.
Meanwhile, there's WWE, where the WWE Champion is a bad person because he expects being the champion to be treated as a big deal.
I never thought they have good chemistry together. I'd bet there's heat ther or at least a dislike, they always seem like they're sandbagging each other.
Just between these two, which would you rather see? Joe vs. Aries or Styles vs. Aries? Joe & Aries have more of the history together and can definitely put on a great match but I'd bet Styles & Aries would play right into each other and put on a classic.
I honestly feel like TNA bats about 50/50. Joe, Angle (after his opening screech), AJ, Hardy, Storm, Roode all work great and fit their characters well. The Knockouts have some good music too, especially Tess. Aries and Bully Ray are generic, and RVD, WHOLE F'N SHOW tips the whole thing down five levels, but overall they sort of grow on you after a while. But they need to turn the volume up and get RVD some pantera rip off, stat.
The need to sign some guys. Scorpio sky blew them off for a chance with WWE. Sonjay Dutt and Rubix looked good but nothing came from that. They need to get some talent for the division
Absolutely on both of them. Rubix was the only "fresh" guy from that whole series who actually stood out as a guy who could maybe work on a national stage. Not sure why they haven't at least used him on TV since. Dutt should definitely be in the mix.
I agree with that but I have a feeling that we will see him in Aces & Eights. They might have him join and state how he had too out of necessity so he could help him his family and Aces & Eights will always hang that over his head whenever they have him do something that he does not like.
Ripped off from Pirates of the Carribean 2. Still a cool thing to do. Although I'm gonna laugh the day he's walking down with his eyes closed to show off the paint and he trips over something.
I like Impact. Most of it is straight and to the point, the comedy/talking stuff is kept short. This is how you pace a show.
One thing that they really need to improve on is explaining the Bound for Glory rankings. I've only started watching recently and I think I have an idea, but they should really show a graphic every week or make up a list and spend 1-2 minutes each week going over it. WWE has always been very good with that kind of stuff. They need to realize that every Impact is potentially somebody's first show (especially with all the positive word of mouth they've been getting) and shouldn't assume we all know what the Bound For Glory series is.
The Impact Time Warp strikes again. They have the pacing down so smooth for this show that it just flies by. If they absorbed some indie guys and expanded to three hours I wouldn't mind a bit.
I'm on the verge of quitting WWE altogether, TNA has got me so covered for what I look for in a wrestling show these days.
Okay, so there's two matches next week, and 3 of the 4 guys will advance to the final 4. Won't that make one of the matches sort of pointless? I'm not sure what the exact point system is but how will the second match have meaning after the first one? Serious question, just looking for an explanation.
They explained that Kurt has 6 points, but they don't explain why, how points are calculated, how he got there, etc. Tenay is good with calling the action, but promoting has always been one of his weaker areas. Not really his problem, in WCW Tony always took care of that, he was set in his ways by the time he got to TNA.

I'm in the same boat. I wasn't a big CM Punk fan until last year, but he emerged as that guy that got me interested again. And now they're doing everything they can to tell me what I want isn't what they're going to give me. Edge is gone, Michaels is gone, if The Rock comes back to face Cena, Cena is beating him...There's guys like Ziggler I like, but I can just watch TNA where I can see a guy as talented as Ziggler who doesn't lose every week.

It'd be nice if a guy like Ziggler could go to TNA if he felt he wasn't getting a chance in WWE without feeling like he's going back to the minor leagues, rather than stick it out hoping his day will come and not wanting to burn bridges. It'd work both ways to - guys from TNA would have more leverage dealing with WWE if being a star in TNA meant more.
Exactly. It's a minor nitpick, I really have been enjoying TNA but they need to understand they're not WWE. 99% of wrestling fans know the rules to Survivor Series, Royal Rumble (and WWE still does a very thorough job explaining). Not everyone has been watching TNA for years and knows their stips.
That spot works if it's someone like Joe or Roode putting on the scarf to show their allegiance to A&E, but when it's some unidentified random skinny guy...eh. I honestly thought he just forgot his face was supposed to be covered and tried to rectify the matter while he thought he was off-camera. We'll see next week, I guess.
I said this a couple of weeks ago - the lack of Garrett Bishoff lately concerns me. I think him and D-Von had one or two throwaway segments weeks ago where they offered their services to the guys against A&8's....given how hard they were pushing them beyond all common sense I can't see them giving up on him that quickly.
TNA has been improving in this area. Not saying they are equal to WWE, but they're doing a better job of making guys like Roode, Aries, Joe & Storm look equal to or better then RVD, Kennedy, Angle, etc. We've come a long way since they would waste valuable TV time on guys like Shannon Moore and Orlando Jordan
Man oh man, I know WWE Films isn't high-brow entertainment or anything, and say what you want about guys like Cena and Big Show, but they have enough charisma and screen presence to carry a movie. Not saying they're worthy of an Oscar or anything, but they can do enough to get by, which is all you really need for a direct to DVD flick.
But WHO THE FUCK thought it was a good idea to put Ted Jr. in a STARRING role?!?!?! He hasn't changed his facial expression the entire movie!
Talk about completely over-estimating someone's abilities. Apparently he got the role because he was scheduled to be one of their top faces by the time the movie would've come out. What made them think he could pull of being a top face, or a movie to help promote him as a top face, I'll never know.
I saw that earlier. I'm not sure if it's for real - could be a swerve. Bully hinted at the same thing so it may be them breaking off negotiations as part of negotiations.
That's what I really like about TNA. Kurt Angle will still be Kurt Angle next week. If he walked to the ring and challenged Aries on the spot, people would buy him as potentially winning. He's one of the best, he fights hard every match, and sometimes other guys who are really good and fight hard are able to beat him. Sometimes he can beat them. Angle and AJ have been trading wins for years - if they met on pay per view next month I'd watch it because it'll be a good, hard fought, entertaining match.
Meanwhile, in WWE land, one guy is the best and should win any match with relative ease barring massive cheating or other dishonorable means...well, actually two guys now. It'd funny that they're so concerned with keeping Cena strong, when half the crowd can't stand him. Maybe look into fixing that first?
Aces & Eights has gone on for far too long without identifying somebody that the crowd could care about. They might as well just be a bunch of jobbers in masks.
Probably because people have an idea how it works after last year. I find the points system to be a bit complicated. It's great in theory but I really just enjoy the solid matches the whole thing produces and let the announcers tell me what's at stake during each match.
I dont find it too difficult to follow. The points system is explained and easily available to look up on the net. Having Pope Dinero get legitimately hurt made it a bit screwy but that was about it.
Is there any plausable way that Aces & Eights has any worthwhile payoff? Jarrett is the mastermind? Bischoff or Hogan are involved? Bubba the Love Sponge and Nash return? The former Nexus, Corre and SES losers make up the group? Someone, anyone, please give me one possible scenario that could make me us care about this angle.
Because the BFG Series was simplified this year and the matches are better. There's a round-robin this year. Everybody got a 4-way match at Hardcore Justice for 20 bonus points. Everybody also got a shot in the opening Gauntlet match (except Anderson, who had a title shot that night). The Final 4 consists of 2 semi-final matches and a final, so TNA isn't backed into a corner booking-wise.
I wish TNA would copy the Japanese-style points system (2 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss) and would adopt a consistent time limit of 20 minutes for all BFG Series matches (the Japanese time limit of 30 minutes), but the system as it currently stands is good enough. The BFG Series has basically become TNA's version of the G-1 Climax or the Champions Carnival and that's exactly what TNA needs. The BFG Series emphasizes that wins and losses matter in TNA. It sells tickets to house shows by including matches that matter on those cards. It allows TNA to build new stars just by booking a wrestler strongly in the tournament. It promotes TNA's biggest PPV of the year months in advance and is also the path to the main event of that PPV. Does it really make more sense to determine the #1 contender for the World Title at the biggest PPV of the year in a battle royal, let alone a battle royal as inherently luck-based (in kayfabe) as the Royal Rumble? Does it make more sense to just name a #1 contender for the biggest show of the year in the usual seemingly random fashion?
Unfortunately, Ace (whom only 1% or so of the fans would ever recognize as having once been known as "Johnny Ace" instead of "John Laurinitis") would then have to give a promo.
Aces and Eights are probably a mix of wrestlers making their TNA debut, wrestlers returning to TNA and wrestlers already on the TNA roster. Its a slow burn storyline, so we're not going to get a resolution immediately. Even under Russo, TNA would sometimes do a storyline that would take many months to play out and long-term storylines are the norm these days. Jarrett and/or Bischoff may be involved, but the most important figure of the group will probably be a finalist in the BFG Series. I believe there's a good chance that either Joe or Bully is involved. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gunner and/or Crimson in the group as well.
The Aces and Eights are now known to be around the same size as the TNA roster. That hints at a likely feud coming between the entire TNA roster and the Aces and Eights. TNA has probably found at least a few future stars for the Aces and Eights and will use the angle to get them over. TNA has had a long-term plan for everything important under the current booking team, so they probably have a long-term plan here. With the BFG Series winding down and the Claire storyline over, we'll probably see significant progression in this storyline soon. I have a feeling that Aces and Eights VS TNA will be the main storyline deep into 2013.
Much like the idiotic Sarah Palin pick four years ago, picking Paul Ryan as the GOP running mate has all but guaranteed Obama's getting two terms. Not to mention killing Bin Laden and ending the most pointless war in history.
They should have it full of people who were fired and people that didn't win the Gutcheck challenge. Joey Ryan needs to be involved, either as the leader of the one that helps kick them out of TNA.

ReplyDeleteI said this a couple of weeks ago - the lack of Garrett Bishoff lately concerns me. I think him and D-Von had one or two throwaway segments weeks ago where they offered their services to the guys against A&8's....given how hard they were pushing them beyond all common sense I can't see them giving up on him that quickly.

Not saying they are equal to WWE, but they're doing a better job of making guys like Roode, Aries, Joe & Storm look equal to or better then RVD, Kennedy, Angle, etc. We've come a long way since they would waste valuable TV time on guys like Shannon Moore and Orlando Jordan

ReplyDeleteMan oh man, I know WWE Films isn't high-brow entertainment or anything, and say what you want about guys like Cena and Big Show, but they have enough charisma and screen presence to carry a movie. Not saying they're worthy of an Oscar or anything, but they can do enough to get by, which is all you really need for a direct to DVD flick.

ReplyDeleteTalk about completely over-estimating someone's abilities. Apparently he got the role because he was scheduled to be one of their top faces by the time the movie would've come out. What made them think he could pull of being a top face, or a movie to help promote him as a top face, I'll never know.

ReplyDeleteThat's what I really like about TNA. Kurt Angle will still be Kurt Angle next week. If he walked to the ring and challenged Aries on the spot, people would buy him as potentially winning. He's one of the best, he fights hard every match, and sometimes other guys who are really good and fight hard are able to beat him. Sometimes he can beat them. Angle and AJ have been trading wins for years - if they met on pay per view next month I'd watch it because it'll be a good, hard fought, entertaining match.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in WWE land, one guy is the best and should win any match with relative ease barring massive cheating or other dishonorable means...well, actually two guys now. It'd funny that they're so concerned with keeping Cena strong, when half the crowd can't stand him. Maybe look into fixing that first?

ReplyDeleteProbably because people have an idea how it works after last year. I find the points system to be a bit complicated. It's great in theory but I really just enjoy the solid matches the whole thing produces and let the announcers tell me what's at stake during each match.

Is there any plausable way that Aces & Eights has any worthwhile payoff? Jarrett is the mastermind? Bischoff or Hogan are involved? Bubba the Love Sponge and Nash return? The former Nexus, Corre and SES losers make up the group?

Because the BFG Series was simplified this year and the matches are better. There's a round-robin this year. Everybody got a 4-way match at Hardcore Justice for 20 bonus points. Everybody also got a shot in the opening Gauntlet match (except Anderson, who had a title shot that night). The Final 4 consists of 2 semi-final matches and a final, so TNA isn't backed into a corner booking-wise.
ReplyDeleteI wish TNA would copy the Japanese-style points system (2 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss) and would adopt a consistent time limit of 20 minutes for all BFG Series matches (the Japanese time limit of 30 minutes), but the system as it currently stands is good enough. The BFG Series has basically become TNA's version of the G-1 Climax or the Champions Carnival and that's exactly what TNA needs. The BFG Series emphasizes that wins and losses matter in TNA. It sells tickets to house shows by including matches that matter on those cards. It allows TNA to build new stars just by booking a wrestler strongly in the tournament. It promotes TNA's biggest PPV of the year months in advance and is also the path to the main event of that PPV. Does it really make more sense to determine the #1 contender for the World Title at the biggest PPV of the year in a battle royal, let alone a battle royal as inherently luck-based (in kayfabe) as the Royal Rumble? Does it make more sense to just name a #1 contender for the biggest show of the year in the usual seemingly random fashion?
So A's & 8's would be a bunch of guys who weren't good enough to get into TNA? Super!

Aces and Eights are probably a mix of wrestlers making their TNA debut, wrestlers returning to TNA and wrestlers already on the TNA roster. Its a slow burn storyline, so we're not going to get a resolution immediately. Even under Russo, TNA would sometimes do a storyline that would take many months to play out and long-term storylines are the norm these days. Jarrett and/or Bischoff may be involved, but the most important figure of the group will probably be a finalist in the BFG Series. I believe there's a good chance that either Joe or Bully is involved. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gunner and/or Crimson in the group as well.
ReplyDeleteThe Aces and Eights are now known to be around the same size as the TNA roster. That hints at a likely feud coming between the entire TNA roster and the Aces and Eights. TNA has probably found at least a few future stars for the Aces and Eights and will use the angle to get them over. TNA has had a long-term plan for everything important under the current booking team, so they probably have a long-term plan here. With the BFG Series winding down and the Claire storyline over, we'll probably see significant progression in this storyline soon. I have a feeling that Aces and Eights VS TNA will be the main storyline deep into 2013.
I agree, it's shit or get off the pot time for this angle.
