Best Hype Video

In the Stone Cold vs Rock favorite moment discussion the wrestle mania 19 "my way" hype video came up, and it seemed like a good topic for blog discussion.  My favorite is the Undertaker vs Michaels package they aired on Raw after elimination chamber.  after that package I was the more stoked for a WrestleMania than i had been in a long time.  I included it below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC7V-ayjorg

"My Way" was for Wrestlemania X7.  Nonetheless, the point stands, it's great.  My favorite is "Mr. McMahon's Utopia." from Over the Edge 98:

I'm also pretty excited about that WWE Network that's coming in 2012:

  1. Not sure if you'd call it a hype video rather than an opening one, but I'm partial to 2000 Armageddon's The End. Gives me chills to this day every time I watch it:

  2. St.Valentines Day Massacre 1999 Intro

My easy #1 favorite of all-time. Like there isn't even a #2 in my book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzwaarNZPg4

  3. Some of my favorite hype videos are:

    WM17 (Austin vs. Rock)
    WM14 (Austin vs. HBK)
    WM25 (HBK vs. Taker)
King of the Ring 1998 (Austin vs. Kane)

    Just to name a few.

  4. Does Kurt Angle's "Clocks" video count?

    ReplyDelete
  5.  And the HBK-HHH Summerslam 2002 hype video was beyond awesome as well, with the song "Fight" by that Doors-wannabe band/singer (same dude who did the "The End" knock off for the first Armageddon PPV) that's pretty kickass, too. Sadly, I can't find it.

And since I don't see a link.  Here's the good ol My Way Austin-Rock video mentioned and the only time Fred Durst was tolerable...

  6.  That HBK-HHH video package was awesome indeed.

  7. Besides "My Way" for WM17, the 2011 Money in the Bank hype video is my favorite.

  8.  What they also did with Austin and HBK at WM 14 was have individual video packages for each guy, building them up to the event.  They showed them on Raw a week or two before the event.  Not sure if they're on YouTube or not, but both videos ran about 7-8 minutes apiece. I remember taping them at the time and watching them repeatedly.

  9.  Love that shot of McMahon in Bret's sunglasses.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So that's where ArmDragon got it from...

    ReplyDelete
  11. On a similar subject, what are some of your favorite fan made tributes to wrestlers/feuds?

    ReplyDelete
  12.  Can't believe I forgot about that one.  I guess the only thing I can say is... I APOLOGIZE, YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Do I have everybody's attention now?"   So good.

    Punk insults Cena.  Nothing.
    Another insult.   Nothing.
"You are the New York Yankees"  PUNCH!       So perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  14.  I remember those videos you're referring to, and I believe they were showed on the the Raw before WM14 (3-23) and the previous week which aired on a Tuesday (3-17). They were very good videos too.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I always bring this one up when this topic is raised- WM 13 Austin/Bret. I'm a huge mark for the 96/97 Todd Pettingill-narrated hype videos where he lays out the essence of the feud and explains what it's *really* about.

    ReplyDelete
  16.  Yeah, I remember when that first aired, I immediately thought that was an awesome shot to use in video promos.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The HBK/Taker promo is probably my all-time fav, with Rock/Austin WMXIX being a close second ("The only thing the Rock hasn't done is whup that candyass at WrestleMania!")

    ReplyDelete
  18. The intro to No Way Out 2002 was pretty funny, simply because it so over the top.  You had horror movie music playing over cuts between the nWo and, like, nuclear bombs dropping, Stalin saluting and a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

    ReplyDelete
  19. After My Way, my favourite is Hardy-Orton at Royal Rumble 2008, specifically the Rooftops song for Jeff. Song fit the wrestler perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  20.  Umm, this isn't bad... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrvDA9Tnj-A

    ReplyDelete
  21. I always loved the commercials for the NWA Crockett show home releases.  They were usually better than the shows themselves...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM45_54oXTY

  22. My favorite is the hype video for the Fatal Four-Way at Backlash 2008 (I think). It was set to Mark Collie's "In Time" from the Punisher soundtrack, and it was black-and-white, with the theme being the impending doom of Orton's title reign. Awesome, awesome video.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You might be the only person in recorded history who's ever been a mark for anything Todd Pettingill has done, ever. Or at least the only one who's ever admitted it in public. Kudos, sir.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. He is Mean Gene compared to the guys they got today. I actually enjoy his hype stuff when it shows up on Classics.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This. And now I'm depressed thinking about how bad they fucked it up.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my9QDwj8Qgs

    ReplyDelete
  26. Was saddened the DVD set that promo to generic music that didn't fit it at all. That package was tremendous unedited.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My favorite was the HBK/HHH Summerslam 2002 one, "Fight". The lyrics fit the storyline perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Um...Miz's pre-entrance video before Wrestlemania 27?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really like the hype video leading to the 2004 Royal Rumble match.

    ReplyDelete
  30.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rz38IwXKG0

    ReplyDelete
  31. The intro videos for 02-04 swing between awesome and insane.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There was a fan made one of Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels using only footage from the buildup and match at WM 25 featuring Letters from the Sky by Civil Twilight that was amazing (it's not the one currently up showing the build to WM26).

    ReplyDelete
  33. yes, that was so amazing and another part that lead me to believe that they would pull the trigger on Jeff's main event push and let him win the title.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's the best one.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Another good one...is the Bret HBK package for their Montreal match.  It starts off with Pettingzoo saying, "its safe to say, they don't like each other."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEOfcwy7f8s

  36. Hart-Austin Survivor Series 1996.  Attitude way before they used the term.  Austin was so far ahead of the rest of the the product in terms of edge, intensity, and realism.  This video had the cool factor that the NWO "commercials" had around this ame time, without the swarmy, "too cool for school" attitude that Hall and Nash brought and which got on my nerves after a while.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUS4yN1G0l4&feature=related

    ReplyDelete
  37. One I really like is Steve Austin's bad-ass black and white video with ravenous dogs hyping his match with Bret at Survivor Series '96.

"You quit because you lost to the sexy boy...the boy toy..."

    ReplyDelete
  38.  I know it's cool to hate on Todd, but he was a pretty good hype man, and while he was annoying, he was pretty good on those video packages.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Pretty sure that was Michael Cole doing the voice-over. Todd Pettengill was unfortunately long gone from the WWF by then.

    ReplyDelete
  40. He was a trillion times better than Michael Cole, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The "Do I have everybody's attention now?" soundbite might be my favorite ever.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Always gonna have a soft spot for this one
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrOGz-niIT0

    ReplyDelete
  43. What's unfortunate about Pettengill leaving? He was worse than terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure that it counts as a "hype" video (although sorta, since it was debuted in relation to the nWo-killing-WWE storyline) but pretty sure nothing ever tops the WWE Desire video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggf6pjWIhd4

    ReplyDelete
  45. It was unfortunate because the guy who replaced him was many, many times worse than him.

I feel like the only reason Todd got a bad rap is because he replaced Mean Gene Okerlund, who let's face it is impossible to top.

Also to note, the announcers today are so bad that guys who were previously considered horrible look like Lance Russell, Gordon Solie and Bobby Heenan rolled into one compared to the current announcers.
Sean Mooney and Chris Cruise immediately come to mind, those two guys used to be considered horrible but if they returned tomorrow, they would be considered the best announcers in the business by default. Hell, late '90's Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko would outperform the current WWE announce team.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm sorry, having been through both Pettingill and Cole I can safely say Cole is a MILLION times better than Pettingill.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ones that no one has mentioned yet.
    Brock-UT No Mercy 02
    Hogan-HBK SuSl 05
Royal Rumble 99 the match itself and Rock-Mankind I quit
    Austin-Rock at Backlash 99
    Kane-Taker WM14
Kane-Taker w/ Austin as ref Judgment Day 98

And the Master Plan intro for Breakdown 98
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aYogKPyUHs

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is one of my favorites that I don't think anyone has mentioned (although the airline reference given what happened a little over a year later is a little troubling), the intro hype video for the Rock/HHH Iron Man match at Judgment Day 2000

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP3RIYBjevA

    ReplyDelete
  49.  GOOD call on the picks from 98 and 99.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Those were definitely some of the best videos they ever did. It was great because with Shawn's back they had to figure out some way to get to Mania without Shawn really doing anything.

The first time their production department really saved the show I think.

    ReplyDelete
  51.  Hot Damn was that awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52.  Wow. There is A LOT of Macho in that video...

    ReplyDelete
  53.  Damn, that one is great. It's funny how totally overlooked WCW has been in this entire thread. That could've been the biggest match in history, what a waste.

    ReplyDelete
  54. How did Cole replace Pettengill? Todd never did any commentary, though I see your point. Really though, choosing between Cole and
Pettengill is like choosing between getting kicked in the balls or getting punched in the mouth... While the ballshot will hurt a lot more, at least you won't have to have a conversation with everyone you see about why you have a fat lip...

You're right about the current announcers. Right now, I think the best commentary team is the ROH guys. When the ROH show first same on and I saw that Kevin Kelly was the lead guy, I thought "Oh fuck, this is going to be brutal". But left to just calling the matches without someone yelling bullshit on his headset he's pretty good, and Nigel works really well as his partner, especially when they do the "Nigel, you used to be a wrestler, explain it to us" bit. Plus his accent (and him always calling Truth Martini "Willie Wanker") amuse me. Most of the WWE/TNA guys are terrible. Lawler sucks, Cole REALLY sucks, JR is nothing more than the butt of a joke that no one besides Vince finds funny, and Tazz sucks. Tenay and Hudson were great during Detestation X though.

    ReplyDelete
  55.  That video really deserved a better match...

    ReplyDelete
  56. It's depressing as hell to say, but the best video they ever did was the Eddie Guerrero tribute video with Johnny Cash.

    ReplyDelete
  57. No shame in admitting that. Pettengill was horrible on commentary, he's not saying he liked that. But go watch any of those PPV promo videos from 1995-1996 where Pettengill does the voice-over with the serious music playing. Those were all amazing. The Iron Man promo was very good.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was always a sucker for the early 90's Rumble packages with Vince SCREAMING at the top of his lungs all of the participants while that awesome music played:

    BUSHWHACKER BUTCH!!!
    TITO SANTANA!!!
    THE BARBARIAN!!!
    BUSHWHACKE LUKE!!!

For some reason it always cracked me up when he would announce multiple guys in between tag team members, like we were supposed to be surpised that both Bushwhackers, or both Demoltion were in. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I still get goosebumps watching that. So much hate in that promo, I thought they were gonna kill each other.

"You can finally go home, look yourself in the mirror, and get a little piece of mind because you will know you were beaten by a REAL man."

That line right there works on so many levels. God, 1996 Austin was just unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  60.  best part is the quick montage showing Rock as Rocky Maivia & leader of The Nation, H as Hunter Hearst Helmsly & leader of DX.

Oh, and Vince saying "LIFE SUCKS AND THEN YOU DIE"

    ReplyDelete
  61.  ultimately I like Michaels better than Austin, but god damn am I happy that Michaels never really got to kick Austin's ass

    ReplyDelete
  62.  Cole started off replacing Todd, then graduated to replacing JR

    ReplyDelete
  63. this right here is the best hype video of all time, especially because we all know how this turned out. so much hate and venom in their words

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_8IYEATV7I&feature=related

    ReplyDelete
  64. Right, I forgot that Cole was once a backstage guy. From mid 1996 on I was barley watching the WWF, like Fuji I was nWo 4 life, and only tuning in to Raw when HBK was on, so I don't really remember the WWF's day-to-day storylines..

    ReplyDelete
  65. I loved those little Desires they did, I believe they did one for Undertaker and Jeff Hardy as well?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Summerslam 1997 intro

"Life isn't fair. ... But whoever said it would be?"

    ReplyDelete
  67. THAT is a promo that would make me buy a PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That was so damn sad. I barely held it together but lost it when the video ended and Vince yelled Viva la Raza

    ReplyDelete
  69.  First one that came to my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  70. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCtrTzwO1oc
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFN975jVT7o

This 2 are the first to come to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  71. HBK/Taker for WM 26 is an all-time winner.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rgJGucOr2Y

    ReplyDelete
  72.  Never thought of it that way, but yeah, they were in danger of stumbling across the finish line after Shawn's casket bump sent him on an even faster descent through the downward spiral he was on.  I often wonder who puts these video packages together because they seem to capture the spirit of a wrestler or feud that is hardly noticeable when watching live.

    ReplyDelete
  73.  Right?  One of the few feuds where I rather watch the video packages than the match.  I'm not really sure what was going on with that match.  Either have Bret perform a few more of his signature moves or cut down the family beatdown by about 5 minutes or so.

    ReplyDelete
  74.  Definitely.  I guess I get this one mixed up with the WM25 match every so often, but the Placebo song puts it over big time.

    ReplyDelete
  75.  Thanks a lot for reminding us of that. Makes me want to cry. I pretty much forgot about wrestling after that for about 2 years until my wife brought me back to it.

    ReplyDelete
  76.  Pink and black tights? What the hell is up with that?

    3:16 Bret!

Most people dream in black and white. You're gonna dream in red.

Someone oughta put a compilation of those videos together.  They were badass.

    ReplyDelete
  77.  You shut your damn mouth about Sean Mooney.  Encounter.  Control Center.  Star Trek uniform for Coliseum Home Video.

    ReplyDelete
  78. See, this just depresses me because of how awesome wrestling used to be. But yeah, awesome stuff. I can't believe I don't remember it.

    ReplyDelete
  79.  THIS! :-) There was always a feeling of power when the matches were announced. Not that lame 5 minute blablabla from today but THE CHAMPION RIC FLAIR DEFENDS THE TITLE AGAINST THE NUMBER ONE CONTENDER, THE MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE....goosebumps! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  80. ABSO-FUCKIN'-LUTELY!

Summed up Miz's entire career and character in just a few short minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Great video, and I actually really like the song itself.

"I will fight, 'til my final breath, just to see you fall, you won't forget me..."

    ReplyDelete
  82. What an awesome video, and totally encapsulated Angle's real-life trials and emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I know Shawn mentioned someone by name in his retirement speech but I can't remember who it was.

They're so great because you get to skip all the silly horseshit in the middle, all the "wacky tag partners that hate each other" and "random triple threats with two guys in a feud AND KANE" shit they do to drag the feuds out between PPV's.

Even My Way, to be the best ever, removes months and months of promos with each guy standing in the ring by themselves talking shit and only covers the few times they were in the ring cutting promos TOGETHER.

I wish they'd release a DVD that was compiled in that sort of format: Austin/HHH video, NWO '01 main event. My Way video, X7 main event. Austin/Kurt video, SS '01 main event. But just use the hype videos they've already made, don't make new ones that are longer and fill more time. What makes them so great is that they're usually 3 minutes at the very most but have months and months of content packed into them.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Rock/Austin - WM 17. And it's not even close.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thing about this one is that it wasn't even used at Wrestlemania 26. It was used on the RAW following the Elimination Chamber, I believe. Yet it's still remembered so well. It's my absolute favorite promo also.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Gotta mention this one: http://youtu.be/VKtnBGwzJaE

    ReplyDelete
  87. Agreed. I don't like the Miz and I hated that Mania, but damn was that video great.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I remember getting goosebumps during that video and being so psyched for Angle's return.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Not hyping a match, but the tribute video to Savage using "The Scientist" by Coldplay after his death was wonderful and got me choked up when it aired.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Yeah, Cole initally replaced Todd as the host of the weekend morning recap shows as well as backstage interviewer. And I agree, Todd was okay doing voice-overs but he was twenty levels of atrocious on color commentary.

But calling Michael Cole a better announcer than anybody is like calling Kristen Stewart a better actress than Meryl Streep.
