Hey there.i don't know why this randomly popped into my head weeks after the fact, but yeah. There was that episode of impact where hogan and sting get kidnapped and taken to a&8s tree fort or whatever, they're sitting there talking to voice modulated leader dude in person, shouldn't his voice have come through clear as day? That mask isn't big enough to have any sort of reamplification device in it. Is leader dude a robot? And yeah, dude was also babbling 3 ft away from joseph parks for a few weeks....
There is so much wrong with that angle. Yeah, that's one of the most ridiculously egregious examples. I'm getting annoyed that apparently we're only ever gonna get one unmasking a MONTH at this rate, maybe less. Devon's not the leader, and because it's TNA there's another three levels of leadership that have yet to be revealed. It reminds me of the last couple of seasons of True Blood, where every time you THINK we've progressed as far up the vampire chain of command as we can go, they find ANOTHER shadowy figure who's actually been running the heel side all along. And True Blood is awesome, so normally I don't even have a problem with that sort of goofy nonsense. But really, they should have just said "OK, it was Devon" and moved on.
Yeah, it got silly really quickly. They went too far with the kidnapping shit (at least when Edge nabbed Paul Bearer, there was this tongue-in-cheek awareness about it; TNA, on the other hand, wanted to play Joseph Park's abduction straight as a board, which just undermined any kind of suspension of disbelief). If this gang was such a rogue threat pre-BFG, then why would they get their own stupid vignette pre-title sequence, rolling in like a second-hand SAMCRO? And why wouldn't Hogan just beef up security ringside? And...and...and...

ReplyDeleteThat's what I don't get either. I don't get what the endgame is supposed to be, since unlike the nWo they've never bothered even explaining what they WANT. There's no story being told anymore, nothing advances, and they don't even give out hints about the identities of the participants to keep people invested.
ReplyDeleteSince it was referenced by Scott in his response, I wanted to say True Blood has ruined my job. I'm a chef in Louisiana, actually about 15 miles from Lafayette, La(for point of reference, when RAW is in the "CajunDome" it's in Lafayette). The restaurant I work at is a stone's throw from bayou country, and it is now the most boring place on earth. I keep waiting for the customers to break out into a near-orgy under a spell, or every mythical creature basically ever imagined to stroll in and possess or kill me. Nothing. Just a bunch of people asking if they can eat the Crab Dip even though their deathly allergic to seafood(the show nailed the dumbness of Louisianians sometimes). And none of our waitresses are fit to tie Anna Pacquin's apron strings. Now I go to work after a new episode and weep in my creme frache.

ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely positively one hundred percent NO point in trying to make the leader anyone established. It should be someone new, unheard of, and as I've said before, probably still masked. That way you've built this person up as being important and you can get someone new over as a big threat, rather than just sliding back to some kind of "shocking" big name that isn't that shocking. The ONLY established name that will be a good answer to this is Batista, with maybe an outside chance of Goldberg. Batista would make more sense, and explain why he'd jump in a non-entity like Devon.

ReplyDeleteI love how I went from first to, like, 38th in the blink of an eye. All my leagues save for one are mediocre at best this year.
The crazy thing is that TNA has dragged the Aces and Eight out so long that they are not even a ratings draw any more. The post-BFG show did a 0.99. That's down from a 1.4 in both 2010 and 2011, with the 2011 show doing what is still TNA's record viewership on Thursdays. If the usual ratings dropoff follows in the next few weeks, TNA could panic and that probably means the return of Russo.
ReplyDeleteA month ago, my prediction was Jeff Hardy. Now, my prediction is Double J, with an outside chance of Bischoff. If Randy Orton is about to get Wellnessed out of WWE, he'd be a good choice to lead the Aces and Eights, but that only happens if Orton really wants to leave WWE. Otherwise, TNA should probably bring in Batista or Goldberg. They need a big reveal and Jarrett or Bischoff as the leader isn't going to help with the ratings.
You know, Russo is probably sitting somewhere smiling to himself about the ratings being lower in his absence.
ReplyDeleteI understand why ratings are important (to some) but it's extremely frustrating when a product improves (for the most part, A and E being dragged out does suck) and are rewarded with shittier numbers.
Like, how do you win? They get higher numbers with all the Russorific crap every week and then lose viewers when the show is better.
My knowledge of their ratings is spotty at best but I'm almost completely sure they had higher viewership at many points during the time Russo was there. And, many would argue, the show was far, far weaker during many of those periods.
My favourite aspect of the whole thing was when Hogan realised he could keep Aces & Eights out by LOCKING THE DOORS and it worked! And the next week the Aces & Eights Bane guy said "You're quite the chess player, Hogan."

Yeah, ratings are hard to figure sometimes. In fact, with the exception of the gate for GAB 1989 and the free TV Steamboat vs Flair bout, 1989 was a pretty putrid year for the NWA.
ReplyDeleteHonestly in many ways, I'd say the same thing happened with the WWF in 1997 to 1998. 1997 was overall a much better product IMO, but obviously it didn't work out that way in the ratings.
To be fair, I wouldn't say Aces and Eights has impacted the ratings much at all in either direction at any point. Impact's ratings have basically been flat through the whole thing for awhile, with a few outliers.

Ace & Eights would have been a fun summer angle if they had just done the reveals over July - September with a blowoff match at Bound for Glory. It would have given Hogan, Sting, Park and the midcard something to do while the top tier guys were tied up with the BFG series.
ReplyDeleteBFG should have have had a Hogan/Sting/Park/Bully Ray vs. Devon/Gallows/random members match to finish it once and for all. The group can still be around as a minor threat with Bully and Devon feuding while Gallows/Knox enter the tag division.
As it came off, the whole angle just killed the momentum of the company by drawing attention away from Storm/Roode, the BFG series, and the ever continuing AJ/Daniels saga.
