In the thread on Chikara from a few days ago people mentioned many zany things about the promotion, but they missed the craziest thing of all. The way the company shifts gears from wacky parody too deathly seriousness, having Kingston cut one of the most emotional promos you're going too hear in this modern era-and then having an incredibly serious main event to crown their first champion. I just thought it was only fair to highlight Kingston's work here after claims that Chikara is never serious about anything
Fair enough. There's always a place for both extremes between the serious and the wacky comedy, as long as one doesn't overwhelm the other, I think.
I know nothing about Eddie Kingston or Mike Quackenbush, never seen a full Chikara match, no clue what the whole storyline is, no idea if any of these guys are good in the ring. This promo made me want to see their match. That's more than 90% of promos can say. Hell, that's more than anyone other than Daniel Bryan can say for the past year.
ReplyDeleteThat's when you know you're watching something special. When someone with no advance knowledge of the product is sucked in by the sell. Kingston's one of those rare breeds of promos where you buy every damn word he says with conviction.
ReplyDeleteQuackenbush is one of the best wrestlers in the world. He never gets mentioned in the discussion because he's obsessed with making a family friendly, lucha style product, but if you watch one of his matches, you'll see it.

ReplyDeleteHe's a damn good writer too. I loved the article he used to write for "The Wrestler" (R.I.P.). And I'm probably one of the only people on the planet that still has a copy of the book he wrote that was released in 2001.

THAT is how you build up a title match. Someone needs to show this promo to the WWE writing team but of course they're too busy watching the latest Twilight movie.

ReplyDeleteI agree...although Chikara's wrestlers are on the smaller side, I've seen him have matches with the bigger guys (Ares) and he adapts well. But Los Ice Creams is still the best

ReplyDeleteI posted a comment about that promo a year ago but it still stands. WWE can have 20 minute long in ring promos every show for four weeks and still not do anything to sell the main event but this promo says who kingston is, how important the match is and why you should watch it in five minutes.
ReplyDeleteOnly Promo even in the same league as this one was Punk's worked shoot, and if Kingston had cut it a year before or after it would have been promo of the year HANDS DOWN
ReplyDeleteQuack is one of the best, but he couldn't really find his niche elsewhere, so he made his own Niche and has made no apologies for it, and now Chikara is without question a top 5 indy in terms of size (after ROH, it's a debate between PWG, CZW, Chikara, DGUSA/Evolve for 2nd through 5th in my view
