CM Punk Has Knee Surgery, Likely Out Of TLC

Source

From Meltzer:
The WWE web site reported that the surgery to C.M. Punk was arthroscopic in nature, and Dr. James Andrews trimmed a cartilage tear that had caused his knee to lock up.

Given the nature of the surgery, he is only expected out of action a few weeks.

No word on if the title will be vacated or if the PPV will be changed.

  1. Good news is that athletes usually only need 1-2 weeks recovery. But if he can't make TLC, maybe an emergency call to Brock Lesnar?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Ugh, I figured this was too much of a good thing and something like this was bound to happen. I just wish when WWE has big plans for guys that they'd give them a easier schedule, so an injury wouldn't derail plans like this.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Could set up perfectly for the WWE. Work the injury into an angle of Punk avoiding Ryback at TLC. Do Rock/Punk at the Rumble. If Punk wins, you could a pretty nice Feb. main event with Ryback coming after to Punk to get what he thinks he is.

It's not like TLC was going draw a dime anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  4. A couple of weeks is nothing. They need to find a way to get him out of the TLC match and keep the title on him. You've invested so much time to build up to an awesome feud with The Rock and Punk needs that title reign for his character.

    ReplyDelete
  5. TLC is the least of their concerns. Probably just push the Cena match to main event status.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I doubt they'll throw away the HUGE money of Punk/Rock at the Rumble (plus the Rumble match selling itself) just to pop a few thousand extra buys for TLC. It's just a question of how they get themselves out of this or write around it.

It's even possible that he could work the TLC PPV and just not take serious. The storyline has the shield protecting him anyways, might as well have the match be 15 minutes of Ryback manhandling 3.5 guys at once and have Ambrose and Rollins take all the crazy stunt bumps and just have Punk slow climb his way up a ladder and grab the belt with a shiteating grin on his face.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It wasn't a difficult schedule that hurt Punk. It was a freak bump through a table.

It's a violent sport and shit like that happens. You can plan a lot in wrestling. Injuries aren't one of those things.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It would be very stupid for them to vacate the title over a 2 week injury.

Have ryback and team hell no vs the shield.

Then have ziggler cash in money in the bank on Monday, and have a cena/show/ziggler/sheamus TLC match for the title.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think they're going to use the 30-day rule or get Punk to gain some sort of injunction against the title match, thus keeping him out of it.

They could strip him, have a tournament for it, then have Punk challenge the new champion to a ladder match down the road "for the title he never lost" like Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon at WMX.

I realize this might be booking too far ahead for WWE, but when life gives you lemons...

    ReplyDelete
  10. From what I've been reading Punk's been working through a knee injury for awhile. The table bump was the last straw but he had this coming for some time now.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They absolutely have to keep the title on Punk. The Shield vs. Hell No/Ryback is fine underneath Cena/Ziggler. Stick Punk on commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's car-crash stunt garbage like putting people through tables that exponentially increases the risk of serious injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Could easily strip him of the title for a possible "I never lost my title, I'm the real champion" storylines. No big deal honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I just find it eerie that the last title reign that went as long as Punk's ended due to an injury.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I patiently await Dougies opinion on this

    ReplyDelete
  16. Have the Ryback vs. Punk match go on as planned. Have Ryback beat him up for a good 10 minutes then have the Shield come out and beat the crap out of Ryback and one of the Shield members climbs and retrieves the belt for Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think the point of the news is that he can't wrestle for 10 minutes or probably even a few. If he could, we wouldn't be having this thread.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ryback needs to make punk his bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ahhhhh, and there it is.

    ReplyDelete
  20. They can't strip Punk of the belt, not after 380 days and making such a huge deal about how historic his reign is. It's apparently a minor injury and it isn't worth throwing away over a year of storyline over a two-week injury.

Put the TLC match first on the PPV, with Punk immediately calling out Ryback to 'get it over with.' Ryback comes out, Shield attacks, Punk climbs up the ladder and grabs the belt to end the match in 2 minutes. It's a copout but in this case it has to be done, plus if you have it jerk the curtain, it's not like fans will be overly disappointed since there's still the rest of the card with other big bouts like Cena/Ziggler, Sheamus/Show and the probable Shield/Hell No & Orton tag match.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hmm...If I can throw a terrible booking idea at the 'E, let's have Dolph cash the briefcase in to 1) Weasel out of the briefcase stip in the Dolph/Cena match and 2) recycle the Duggan/Austin finish. Now how can we ruin Show/Sheamus....

    ReplyDelete
  22. Honest question... Is Punk legit straight edge? Just curious if he would ever use any help to get back in the ring faster

    ReplyDelete
  23. It says a lot when the answer to what should replace a PPV main event is either a six man tag or a #1 contenders match, while the other world title match isn't even mentioned.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very big deal. A major part of his title reign was its length. You lose that if he gets stripped.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Looks like Cena's closing the show. I would have been shocked if that wasn't originally the plan anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Looks like Vince has a legitmate reason to put the belt on Cena.
    Sigh......

    ReplyDelete
  27. To my knowledge he isn't complete 100% straight edge (which is an almost incomprehensible lifestyle to abide by completely) but he doesn't do the painkiller/reliefroid route.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Meh, unless there's reason to believe he won't make the Rumble, bfd. Can just "force" Punk to wrestle, as he's limping down the ramp, Shield takes out Ryback...can milk it a bit, as he's walking down "what are you doing, why are you doing that?" wins, ready to drop it to Rocky

    ReplyDelete
  29. No three words strike fear in the heart of an athlete more than "Dr. James Andrews"

    ReplyDelete
  30. just out of curiosity: why do you consider straight edge to be "an almost incomprehensible lifestyle to abide by completely"?

    ReplyDelete
  31. didn't they even do the same with Cena - ironically enough with the same reign Punk is tying up with?

    ReplyDelete
  32. He was injured for months though. Not a few weeks

    ReplyDelete
  33. Straight edge means a lot of things to a lot of people. Most people just use it to mean no recreational drugs and no alcohol which is fine. True straight edge, not just the diet version that edgy 15 year olds claim, involves no drugs of any kind (including aspirin/painkillers), no caffeine or other dietary drugs, no alcohol and no promiscuity. It is very very difficult to live this kind of a lifestyle. Catholic monks have more freedom than that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A full-on, 100% straight-edge lifestyle means no premarital sex, no drugs, no alcohol, no caffeine, no chemicals of any kind that could be construed as "body/mind altering". The problem is that EVERYTHING that is produced on a massive scale these days has something in it that invalidates the lifestyle. So you have to know exactly where your food is coming from, exactly what every substance you put in your body consists of, and an OCD-level of nit-picking everything that most people just can't handle for any length of time.

I was "Punk-level" straightedge when I was younger, and even I thought the harder of the core were off their rocker a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I thought I read somewhere that he'll take prescription painkillers and aspirin?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I wonder if they will go the route of crowning an "interim" champion while Punk is on the shelf?

Then sometime in late December (Christmas Eve RAW? New Years Eve RAW?) have a unification match with Punk and the interim champion, with the winner facing Rock at the Rumble.

That would have a clever way of extending Punk's reign without having to vacate the title or do without a WWE title match at the PPV.

What if at TLC, Punk "is attacked in the back" by the shield (but it isn't shown of course).... Have Vickie feeling the pressure of having a show. She tells Heyman she needs a WWE Title match. Heyman threatens legal action and a call to the board of directors. Heyman suggestsSHIELD not punk should be punished.... Vickie makes the shield compete vs Ryback and team hell no

It's later revealed of course that the shield never laid a finger on punk and he faked and injury. SHIELD takes the fall for punk

    ReplyDelete
  38. If the injury goes longer than expected, it's too bad Cena vs. Rock is so set in stone- you could have them do a unification match at the rumble and then Do Rock vs Punk for the title he never lost at mania, which, if they could work some added mystique from the unended title reign, would be really neat.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The fact that there's an 'other world title' is for me the biggest problem with the WWE, looking at it purely in terms of accomplishments. If they kept the IC, US and Tag titles, but unified the world titles, I think that'd help a lot. How can anyone be excited about someone finally reaching the top of the mountain when there are two damn mountains?

    ReplyDelete
  40. knee injuries vary but I had arthriscopic knee surgery to repair torn cartilage on both sides of my right knee. I never need a pain killer, was up and hobbling around the next day and was walking fine within a week. Granted I wasn't wrestling, but since his injury sounds similar to mine (they just shave the bone down a bit to repair a torn meniscus), I don't see any reason he can't pull off a BS title match on Raw in 2-3 weeks after his surgery to maintain the 30 day stip and be ready for Rock at RR at full strength. The key will be how to get through TLC. Not knowing the storylines, I leave that to others. I just wanted to toss my own experience with that kind of surgery into the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Only if the Iron Sheik is the one who trains Ryback and keeps calling Punk 'B Brian Blair'

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cena's closed the show for the majority of PPVs during Punk's reign already so I see no issue here.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Plus, the Ryback is a tad bit sloppy. Would you trust him to be that precise? Make the match look good but not do any harm to a sensitive area? Because I sure as hell wouldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Would rather see them outright skirt the issue. Say, acknowledge Ryback injured Punk (perhaps bring up Ryback's brutality, him nearly killing Jack Swagger and driving him from the company and his brutal assault against Brad Maddox after beating him) and have Punk, still bitter the last time he had his reign cut short by someone injuring him, basically threaten legal action to prevent Vince from stripping him of the belt if he can't wrestle at the PPV.

The match is cancelled and Ryback ends up inserted into the Big Show/Sheamus match to make it up to him. Which in turn allows Ryback to be sent over to Smackdown (as punishment for his sloppiness) and set up Big Show/Ryback as a major feud.

  45. I approve of this message.

    ReplyDelete
  46. He refused morphine when he fractured his skull. Granted, he might consider that an "I was young and dumb" type of thing and changed his stance on prescription stuff, but he might still refuse them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with everything in this post. I need a shower.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Looks like Ryback & Daniel Bryan & Kane against The Shield at the TLC PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Really disappointed about the news— got tickets for TLC and was looking forward to seeing Punk's last successful title defense before the inevitable at RR. Seems like they were already setting things up for The Shield's six-man debut (against Hell No and Orton), so that plus Cena-Ziggler plus Show-Sheamus plus a CM Punk match would have been a really sweet card. Dang nabbit.

    ReplyDelete
  50. So does the selling point of TC become Punk's triumphant return to commentary?

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's a terrible idea.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm not a doctor, but I don't think he'll be stripped of the title over this.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Why is it a terrible idea? It's a proven money-making angle, it books long term, it protects Punk if he's going to be out for a while, if they pick someone new to be champion, it builds a new star potentially, and it gives them a main event that might draw some money at one of the throwaway PPV's.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Not if the Smackdown Spoilers have anything to say about it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. You lose that yes, but at the same time it's a legit way to take the title off of him and still keep him strong. Just saying it's not anything TOO bad.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Proven? Business sucked in 95.

    And two words.

    The Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Uh, business may have sucked in 1995, but a champion who never lost his title coming back to reclaim it has been a proven money maker as long as there has been wrestling. Dusty Rhodes used the angle in Florida and Mid-Atlantic, Vince has used it, I've seen it in WCCW, ECW, and Japan.

And I'm not saying that they should do this, I'm saying that if he has to stay out for more than a few weeks, then obviously something needs to be done. I'd rather see Punk hold the title for a long time, to bring some prestige back to it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Uh, considering that he wasn't stripped...and it's Ryback/Hell No v. The Shield. Suck ma dick.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I got me some bad spoilers. Pardon moi.

    ReplyDelete
  60. So TLC is not even going to have a TLC match?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Spanish to french? Contain yourself, Antonio Zansaro.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm pretty sure he is. I remember seeing a few times someone asking him on Twitter if he ever uses painkillers/prescriptions for an injury, and his reply was: "No I don't, because I'm not a pussy."

If people wanna be *really* fucking picky, he's not straight-edge, since he drinks Pepsi and that has caffeine, but seriously, come on.

    ReplyDelete
  63. This is a reply to both you and the guy above, so not to think I'm singling you out lol. But I don't think promiscuity is part of being straight-edge. But there are different kinds of straight-edge, though, which is where the problem kinda lies.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wwe main event spoiler:

Punk out of pov, replaced by shield vs team hell no and ryback

    ReplyDelete
  65. *narrows eyes* I see what you did there.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Owen Hart Piledriving?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Meh, nothing eerie about it as far as I can see - modern WWE is, for a whole host of reasons, an injury prone working environment. In both instances, you have guys who frequently worked intense, full schedules with lots of high impact matches for more than a year. It's a miracle they didn't get injured sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  68. They need to keep the title on Punk. Wait until the injury heals, then pretend he faked the injury to get out of facing Ryback.

    ReplyDelete
  69. This....makes...sense?! It really is December 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  70. We're not in the 90s anymore. Time to evolve.

If necessary, Punk can hobble out, cut a promo before the match, have Shield jump the face, and take a DQ loss. If Punk's knee exploded, that'd be one thing, but this is a minor issue.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The easiest solution would be to just make it a multi-man match: Punk defends the title in a TLC match against Ryback, Bryan, Kane, Orton, and Miz. Maybe even throw in Del Rio and Barrett, just to decrease Punk's work-load that much more.

It's going to be a clusterfuck-with-a-screwy-ending anyway, may as well go all the way with it. Definitely would help Punk's current "weasel" character, as well, to do nothing for the whole match and then just waltz in and win at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  72. where is the problem with not using drugs and not screwing around all the time?

(and btw: you forgot to mention that most "more strict" straight edge guys are also vegetarians or vegans)

    ReplyDelete
  73. hell that would be more interesting then any of the shit they will go with
