Cena post Mania

Hey Scott,
I love your blog, I check it daily. I really want ask you a question
even though you must get hundreds, dare I say, millions of these
everyday...but here it goes: What in god's name is Vince and The WWE
going to do with John Cena post-Mania as champion that they haven't
already done in his past 10 title reigns? Obviously, I'm assuming that
they are going to go through with the Rock dropping the title to him
at Mania this year. I feel like it's a lock. So, if that is so...who
the hell is he feuding with that we haven't seen? Who is over enough
to feud with him? What type of circumstances would be interesting? I
mean we have to factor in who he has already feuded with, title or
not, AND he's not TURNING heel. So, where does that leave us? I mean,
aside from turning the channel to ESPN or a Walking Dead rerun.

Let it play out and see where it goes.

  1. If they get Brock to re-sign, I could them doing Brock/Cena 2 right out of the gate. And then sacrificing up and comers like Cesaro, Barrett, and The Shield to the altar of John Cena.

Cena/Cesaro, and Cena in some type of feud with SHIELD wouldn't be terrible.... Even another Punk/Cena program could be solid. They never had any one on one gimmick matches so a extreme rules encounter could work. Not saying I at all want Cena on top again but it looks to be headed that way

  3. Imma clue you in on a little secret...
Cena wins the title at WM

  4. Hmmm....maybe if Dolph looked like a legitimate challenge to Cena after his victory at TLC instead of jobbing two weeks in a row...maybe HE could have been Cena's first program.

Honestly aside from that...I don't know. They've kept the Shield away from him. Maybe they go that route? Or another Punk match where Cena finally gets to beat Punk. Aside from that they'd have to elevate someone but that'd seem counterproductive because they'd elevate say Cesaro. He's lose. Back down the card. I doubt Cena holds the title too long after Mania to be honest.

  6. I missed the comma there and thought it said Cena/Cesaro and Cena in a feud with Shield...the thought of two Cenas must make Vince salivate. Finally, someone John could do a clean job for!...unless he'd no-sell himself, of course.

  7. A freshly turned heel kofi kingston. Thats who

  8. Build Brodus Clay back up. Have him and Cena team a bit, then BOOM, heelasaurus.

    Nailed it! ^^^

  13. This is where Cena beating Brock really screws them. Had Brock won, then beaten HHH (twice) they set up Cena/Brock II for the title w/ fans believing Cena is in real peril. Alas...

    ReplyDelete
  14. The MegaPowers explode from hell? Or Candyland, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What's funny (or not so funny) is that Dolph jobbed twice in three weeks to Cena prior to TLC. Gotta keep that young whiper snapper Cena stroooonnngggg....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Look for Cena to hold the title 1 more day than Punk's current reign.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 3 on 1 match against the Shield where the Shield beats him up for 15 minutes then Cena suddenly no sells, kicks out of all the finishers, AA's all of them and pins all three at once. Then he jogs around the ring with a big grin on his face like he was just in a 15 second squash against Ricardo.

For me, it probably does mean changing the channel. Not gonna say I'd immediately stop watching but if it's going to be the same old crap and nothing terribly interesting is happening with guys like Punk, I don't see why I should put myself through the Cena garbage again.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Goddammit, I hate that man so much. It's like he listened to Howard Finkel and thought" I'm going to do the exact opposite of what he did, cus it'll work!"

    Haha so true

    ReplyDelete
  20. Where's Bryan with a tie when you need him huh?

    ReplyDelete
  21. This was easily the most depressing thought I've had since Cena jobbed out Ziggler in yet another ridiculous way on Monday. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Two words: Danial Bryan.

Heel turn for him and he'll get the shit kicked out of him all summer long as Vince continues to punish him for getting over without permission and inadvertedly deepsixing Sheamus's career.

They might repair him up with AJ, and portray Bryan as a pussy whipped and abused henchperson of AJ's complete with him screaming "No No No" whenever he catches AJ whoring behind his back and "yes yes yes" whenever AJ shows any sign of treating him like a human being, complete with Bryan screaming "She thinks I'm cute!" whenever AJ says anything about him positively....

    ReplyDelete
  23. Exactly. Have Dolph beat Cena at TLC. Brag about it incessantly. Have him beat Cena due to help from Big E in the cage. That way after Cena wins you have a logical first challenger who can say "I beat Cena so I deserve a title match."

    ReplyDelete
  24. Maybe have Cena snap in Backlund-esque fashion...I'd even do it at Elimination Chamber...whatever happens at the Rumble with Rock/Punk, a rematch is set to happen at EC. Whoever the champion is at that PPV, let's say it's Rock, the Shield beats both Rock and Punk down to stop the match from even happening and finally shut down the "Is the Shield working for Punk?" stuff. Dolph comes down to the ring, presumably to cash in MITB. Cena attacks him from behind and grabs the briefcase and lays a vicious beatdown on Dolph, all the while Punk struggles to his feet and is hanging on the ropes, can't believe what he's watching....until Cena attacks Punk's knee with the briefcase...Crowd (hopefully) can't believe it either. Have Cena cut promos about how he can't handle the pressure of the expectations of the fans and/or the WWE and how Rock gets treated better than him by the fans despite working once a year. Then at Wrestlemania, you can run Rock/Punk/Dolph/Cena for the title and give the belt to Cena through CHEATING~! and he can feud with all 3 through 2013.

Or Cena can repeatedly OVERCOME THE ODDS against Big E Langston for the next 9 months after 'Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cesaro will definitely tangle with Cena at some point. With Cesaro doing the anti-us schtick Cena is the natural all-American boy for him to go up against.

Doubt it'll be for the title

    ReplyDelete
  26. You wonder if Cena is being kept away from the Shield on purpose, whether it's to eventually set up a fresh feud down the road or (big if) Cena will be revealed as their leader as part of a heel turn. But yeah, it's probable that any Cena/Shield interaction will result in Cena overcoming the odds and beating them 1 vs. 3.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen because I think it'd be a hell of a match. I just don't want them to try and rush and elevate him without the foundation first merely to give Cena a challenger. Give Cesaro time to keep growing and getting over before elevating him to that level.

But Cesaro vs. Cena would be great. Sign me up.

    ReplyDelete
  28. From the producers of Super-Cena, get ready for MEGA-CENA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. *Cena hoists title*

    *siren goes off*

*TitanTron reads: CHALLENGER APPROACHING: A NEW FOE HAS APPEARED*

  30. Hate to say it but ortons suppsedly turning heel soon so you know we are getting that one again, and certainly more cena v punk too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't want to see any of them get destroyed by Cena, but the only kinda sorta new names I can come up with for him are: Wade Barrett, Antonio Cesaro, The Shield, Damien Sandow, and Cody Rhodes.. or maybe Mark Henry if he returns as a heel.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Raw after Mania:
    - Cena cuts generic promo
    - Lights Darken
    - "We're not gonna take it" hits the PA
    - David Arquette appears on the ramp
    - Cuts a promo about Cena stealing his spotlight by appearing in Ready 2 Rumble
    - Challenges Cena to match at Backlash
    - Arquette wins match
    - Feud through the summer

    ReplyDelete
  33. Don't write off a Cena turning heel, I have a sneaky feeling it could happen this time considering how down ratings and general business seem to be. Now is as good time as ever to do the big turn IMO. I think a post Mania Cena heel turn could lead too many interesting programs and dynamics that would freshen the shows up greatly, if he stays face I'm really not sure where they can go with him?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Cena will get the up-and-comers and it'll be a repeat of his Ziggler feud. More importantly is what they have Punk do. He's out of the title picture until 2014. I'm guessing some sort of losing streak because he is paranoid and unhinged.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Those heel turn rumors have been going around for months

    ReplyDelete
  36. from the interviews i've seen of him a few months ago i think he's ready to take a nice break. not sure if his contract will let him so soon though.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Best solution: Brock Lesnar helps Rock to retain the title.

-We can get Cena vs Lesnar II
-We will have The Rock as Champion for at least another Match
    -Win win situation. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cena vs. Punk at Extreme Rules and the June PPV
Cena vs. ??? at the July PPV
    Cena vs. Brock at SummerSlam
Cena vs. Dolph at Night of Champions and the two October PPVs
Cena and Rock vs. Punk and Brock at Survivor Series
Cena vs. Punk in a TLC match at

    ReplyDelete
  39. Having said that, I still think Brock - Cena is really the only interesting feud on the table. This would be really fun if they traded the belt back and forth and Punk and Heyman got all in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  40. A Cena/Punk/Brock Triple Threat would be pretty great.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hope he feuds with Big Show again. Cena/Show is basically the feud equivalent to Ricky Steamboat/Ric Flair for this generation.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Instant Hatred: I wouldn't mind seeing Triple H turn heel and have one more run feuding with Cena. Triple H w/ heel Flair heeling it the F up would make appointment television.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It is awfully difficult to get any heels over when over half the crowd boos Cena out of the building.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It would make for appointment television.......6 years ago.

BTW, ever going to admit you were wrong about Scott hating HHH in 2000? I'm still waiting for your retraction.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So many buys it's not even funny.

    ReplyDelete
  46. But who's gonna pay Kane to do their dirty work?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think they could get away with just having Brock show up and "break" Cena's arm. IF they have Cena sit out and sell it for a few months, when he comes back I think the match would have just as much impact to casual fans as if Brock had won the first match.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Here's how it should go down:

Do the "I need to beat you Rock" retread of Wrestlemania X7 with Rock/Cena this time, and then do the ending the exact same way. Have Cena go ballistic and do everything in his power to beat the Rock.

Next night on Raw, Cena acts exactly the same as he always does, but this time, everyone from announcers, to other wrestlers, start calling him out about his performance at Mania.

Same phony character that everyone with a penis that hit puberty boos, but with aggression in the ring that everyone else boos as well.

    ReplyDelete
  49. For Cena's heel turn to work (if and when that ever happens), he needs to take his current character and ham it up even more coupled with some cheating spots during his matches. I'm not advocating that he immediately turn into a chickenshit heel, because that would be ridiculous, but he can't wrestle his "superman" style anymore. They have to be careful, because Cena going heel will just have 50% of the audience that boos him now start cheering while the other 50% start booing and you're basically in the same spot.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes I was wrong. He's bashed him so much over the years its easy to get it twisted.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That depends on his heel character. If he plays an angry "I hate the fans" character that will probably get cheers. But if he keeps hamming it up like he normally does, INSTANT HEAT!

But how he portrays himself in the ring is going to be the problem. I'd say don't change a thing, because then you kind of have a "monster" heel.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I dunno, his whole "overcoming the odds" is still going to keep the kiddies cheering. You can still be a "monster heel" and not be superman.

    ReplyDelete
  53. He's so not turning heel though. He's 100% doing a program with heel orton.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've heard post manoa

    ReplyDelete
  55. If true, that is depressing on many levels. However, that lumps those two together so maybe we can get a proper Punk-Bryan feud with no AJ BS in the way. I feel that can be explored further. I'd also like to see Punk feud with Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Eff that noise. Heel Orton vs. YES! Daniel Bryan.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 6 years ago people were more sick of heel Triple H than ever! Note: I realize you weren't being totally serious.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well, you have to remove the "overcoming the odds" aspect. At this point, he is the odds.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think I'd rather see that than Cena feuding with someone like Cesaro or Barrett, giving them the Ziggler treatment and beating them 6 weeks in a row on Raw before they get tossed back down to the midcard. At least a feud with HHH would probably not be so one-sided. Leave Flair out of it though, a scripted promo battle between him and Cena would just be a nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Exactly my fucking point!

    ReplyDelete
  61. As much as I like The Rock and want to see him win the title, part of me hopes for Lesnar to do a run in at the Rumbe and set up Rock-Brock at Mania. Then I can stop hearing about how stale, boring John Cena is going to ruin the business by beating Rock for the title at Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  62. He should do like Batista did in his last heel run.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I disagree with the "now is as good time as ever" argument. You don't run your biggest angle in your back pocket when ratings are hovering around 15 year lows. That's the perfect time where a great angle can get lost and forgotten about. Why did Hogan turning and Austin-McMahon (April '98) resonate and really put both companies over the top? They had 2-3 months of ratings momentum beforehand. If somehow "Wrestlemania season" does start producing better ratings, I think it might be more likely.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Has Cena ever slammed a man as big as the Big Show? I can't remember...

    ReplyDelete
  65. Poop jokes. That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Maybe get crazy after Wrestlemania? Have Ryback challenge Cena? Maybe Cesaro?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ordering the replay already,

    ReplyDelete
  68. Uh, they beat his ass at Survivor Series...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Cm punk, heel Orton, ryback, sheamus, daniel Bryan, dean Ambrose and Antonio. Face/face matches would work I think for summerslam/survivor series

    ReplyDelete
  70. And Undertaker spent three months trying to destroy Vince McMahon before it was revealed he was the "Greater Power." Your point? WWE is more than willing to defy logic for the sake of a swerve if they're out of ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Vince Russo is long-gone dude.

Name the last time they did something like that? Sure there's plenty of angles that never went anywhere, but name the last time they did a SWERVE of that extreme-itude.

    ReplyDelete
  72. 2013=/=1999.

Wrestling companies change. Name the last time they've done a classic Russo swerve.
