I was actually going to track down some of their Indy stuff on Youtube one of these days, so this saves me the trouble.

Comments

  1. Jerry Lynn in the 'short trunks' is not a good sight...

  2. Good match but I can't decide whether I like the ending or not.

  3. Barry Horowitz held that title. Global on ESPN was awesome!

  4. This will help in my chore of making a decent X-Pac moveset for WWE '13.

  5. I was such a huge Waltman mark back in the day that I was always on the lookout for rare Waltman matches from tape traders and such.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I can't do shit in that game. Any websites with tips you can give me?

  7. 20+ years later, in some ways, Waltman underachieved because he was one of the first high flyers of the 90s and had a ton of a talent, If he would have kept his head screwed on right, he might have earned a run or two with a World Title. I thought his best match was against Bret Hart from 1994 and him imitating Ric Flair during the infamous NWO Four Horseman parody was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in wrestling.

  8. Waltman looks like the Indiest work who ever worked an Indie. Lynn looks practically the same.

    ReplyDelete
  9. He had the look of a punk twerpy kid that as fan, you thought you could probably take him in a real fight.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Eh, I can't see him ever winning a world title regardless of his personal issues. The only true high flyer to win it is Rey and not only is his reign seen as terrible, I think it was more a reward for selling so much merch and being a top face for several years. And it took him 17 years to get to that level. Waltman just never had enough weight to be believable as a main eventer against the likes of HHH, HBK, Angle, Austin, Rock, Orton, Cena, etc. And while Rey is several inches shorter, he's also a lot thicker (thank you sterioids). I mean, just look at this match. Lynn just looks so much bigger despite similar heights.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Now that's an interesting topic! If he were around today he'd probably win a World Title or two, because pretty much everyone does, but I think he could have had a quick run in 1998/1999. Like a Degenerate Rey Mysterio underdog type of character. He played the underdog face well, and I thought he was good heel to - he looks like a little shit you should be able to rough up fairly easily, but he's fast and had various ways to kick you in the head.

  12. Global was on ESPN right after I got home from school four days a week when I was younger, it was such a great way to unwind between school and family dinner. Who owns the rights to the GWF and where can I get some DVDs?

Actually think XPac is one of the best guys in that game.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'd say that holds true today. If I were to put a list of "wrestlers who's asses I think I could kick", Waltman would be pretty close to the top. And I say that as fan of his.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes I loved gwf and so want vkm to buy that footage

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm a big Waltman mark, but still, no fucking way. For starters, he's way to small. And not like ROH guy small, but like he's gonna die in there small. That's a big reason I marked out for him, as a kid I thought "He's barely bigger than I am, if he can be a wrestler maybe I can too." And I never even bought him as being close to the top guy among the people he was working with. Up until he left the nWo he was always attached to the hip to Scott Hall, who was clearly the bigger star (and I don't just mean size-wise), then he was the skinny guy that was buddies with HHH, then he was the skinny guy that tagged with Kane. He was always in someone else's shadow. Totally buy him as the top cruiserweight guy though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What about Jeff Hardy? Same build, same abilities (same personal demons) and he has been WWE & TNA champion. And he continues to be pushed as a top singles guy to this day. Even with the changes in the business since Waltman was at his peak, why him and why not Waltman?

    ReplyDelete
  18. A fluke 2 week title run or something along those lines back in 94 or 95 was not out of the realm of possibility. It would have fit right in with his character and he was over enough so it wouldn't be a total joke.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's so creepy how much Pac looks like my cousin. With beard, and without.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hardy is a few inches taller, slightly thicker, and more muscular. And even then, I have never really bought him as a main eventer. He, much like Rey, seemed to get the push based on merch and popularity. Waltman was *never* over enough with the crowd nor did he have his own merch selling enough to justify a run.

    ReplyDelete
  21. GWF was awesome after school, Ebony Experience sucka!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fuck man, don't even get me started on that dipshit... I STRONGLY feel that Hardy should have never even been anywhere near a single's run, much less any sort of world title. But to answer the question, because Hardy, and even I'll admit this, was a bigger star than who he was associated with (in this case, Matt), while Waltman was never even close to the star that the people he was hanging around with were (Hall, Nash, HHH, the NAO, Kane). And as Scream said below about Rey Rey, Hardy in his WWE days moved merch. I don't think Waltman ever moved any, though in fairness the only piece of Waltman merch that I know even existed was the nWo 6-ball shirt (which I'm proud to say I owned), so it's not like he was ever given the chance.

As I said, I love Waltman, and can say first hand he's a great guy to hang with and party with. But he was always second, or even third, banana to the guys around him. He knew it too, his role was to come out with the nWo or DX, stand there crotch-chopping and shit while Hogan/Hall/Nash or HHH/Dogg/Gunn did their usual spiels, and then get on the mic and make me laugh my ass off. And he did it well. But as a serious contender to the top title? No one would have bought that shit. IC/U.S. title, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. At the time of his title runs, Hardy was the most popular guy on the roster.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I debate that as far as TNA goes. But as for his WWE tenure, sure. I hate to say it, but that's my point. Waltman has never even been close to being the most popular guy in the stable he was in. And the term "X-Pac heat" exists for a good reason too.

BTW, on a sort of related subject, didn't TNA cancel Genesis this year? I swear I heard they did, yet I'm seeing TV ads for it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. With people who had yet to hold a world title (or never did) on the roster at the time like Michaels, Owen, Hall, or even going back to Taker, Bret, etc... Not a total joke, but it would have been ill-advised.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good point. I didn't even think about merchandising being a factor here. And Vince kept giving Hardy a pass for his many indiscretions for that very reason.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm talking about his WWE run and how you said he didn't deserve to be anywhere near a singles run.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm not saying he should of headlined any PPVs as world champion. I'm just saying as an angle, 1-2-3 Kid winning the World title on a fluke would have worked.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I find it somewhat unlikely that both guys are almost exactly the same weight. Waltman is rail-thin for a wrestler, and Lynn is quite stocky and solid.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agreed. Waltman was a good hand, but never even acted like a Main Eventer, or seemed to really want it. He was nearly always a guy with a partner, or one of a stable. If he played politics to a certain point, he might have pushed himself to that level, but it seems like the limits of his politicking was to have himself booked as a recurring Light/Cruiser Champion against whoever was the "hot new act" around the InVasion angle.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Seriously man, my hatred of him is well known not just here but all around the net. And if JEFF FUCKING HARDY would make a better champ, well, there ya go.

But nowadays... I could see Waltman getting at least a run with the Big Smackdown plastic-looking Gold Belt. Put him in the Rumble, let have a good 20-30 minute run, and have him come out on the next Raw saying that he wants one last good WWE run before he calls it quits. "Sure, I might be small and have kind of fucked up my career with drugs and I was that funny skinny guy that just stood in the background while the nWo/DX was cutting promos. But the fact is, I was pinning people on Raw while most of you guys were still in middle school. and most of these fans weren't even born." Have him win the title just on old-school experience and drop it to someone like Cesaro at the next PPV. Or have him beat Ziggler for the title (if he ever cashes in), then have Ziggler just murder him at the next PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, that was just my usual hatred of that asshat spotmonkey talking. From a promoter's standpoint? Of course, you'd have to be insane to not go in the direction they did.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "If he played politics to a certain point, he might have pushed himself to that level"

That's it right there. Waltman never wanted to be a huge star, he just wanted to chill with his boys, hop on the mic and say some funny shit, and make some good money. He just wanted to make his mark, not be another Hogan or Austin or anything. And he did it, he made solid cash and we're talking about him in 2013. 100% mission accomplished.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe a couple years later, but in 94-95? They were still on the 5-PPV a year, 1 hour of TV at that point. Around 96-97, had he stayed up north? Sure, it would have worked. But still. Owen would have been a much better guy for that role.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Owen and 1-2-3 Kid are completely different characters. I'm not saying Waltman deserved a title run over anyone, but from a character stand point, a fluke win would have worked. And the PPV model they were on is irrelevant. I'm talking like a 2 week run or something like that, nothing for an extended period of time.

I'll give you an example. Let's say they wanted to turn Diesel heel in the summer of 95 in advance of his upcoming feud with Bret. On a random Raw in August or whatever, Diesel defends against Kid. Kid goes over in the biggest upset of all time. After the match, Diesel hands him the belt and they're all buddy-buddy. Kid turns his back and Diesel snaps, destroying Kid. Run the rematch 2 weeks later and new, bad ass Diesel kills him in 3 minutes to win the title back.

It fits in with Kid's character at the time as the ultimate underdog and it immediately establishes Diesel as the biggest heel in the fed. Just in time for his program with Hart.

  36. Was not in anybodies shadow as the leader of X factor

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe... Credible is a former world champ, Albert/Tensai has a pinfall win over Cena this year, and had a pretty good run in Japan... I guess you could call it a draw, though being the guy that led the stable that consisted of one guy that killed an entire promotion and another who's most known for having a really hairy back isn't a big accomplishment.

    ReplyDelete
  38. you know what's funny? that's not the first time that would be true. if you play no mercy competitively, x-pac is by far the best character in the game!

his taunt builds special meter so much faster than anyone else's it's disgusting. and his finisher is so quick that you can do 2+ of them during special mode.

he also has the sleeper, which is the single most broken move in the whole game (yes, even worse than ANY of the CAW moves). it's a weak grapple that does strong grapple damage, i think because they never changed it from the WCW games where it was piper's finisher. no joke, doing 7 sleepers gets you a guaranteed submission even if you never land anything else the whole match!

oh yeah AND x-pac's Flying rating is also one of the highest, which is important since that stat affects a lot of moves (including some that make no fucking sense lol). you can't do the sleeper on the superheavyweights (henry/rikishi/viscera/andre), so this is especially key vs. them.

no mercy's top tier is literally "everyone who has the sleeper as a weak grapple", even chyna & tori. however, thanks to his meter-building, x-pac would still be in a tier by himself even if the sleeper wasn't so ridiculous.

  39. Jesus, I thought I played those games too much.....

Breaking down the way the game actually works on the THQ N64 titles makes my head hurt.

  40. But Tensai is the greatest screamer in WWE history... I want to see Tensai vs mike sharpe.. dream scream match

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, that would work.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Man, what a dumbass finish. So, the heel has the advantage and has his guy beat, knocks out the ref by accident, then cheats anyway and wins? That makes Lynn look like a real friggin' idiot.
