CM Punk Question

I know that CM Punk is now at a clear main event level right behind Cena as the company's number 2 guy, between the long title reign and getting to work two main events with The Rock. However, he lost both of those main events, lost last night against Cena on RAW for the WrestleMania title shot, and if he is indeed Undertaker's opponent at WrestleMania, that is four very high profile losses in a short span. Do you think that will damage CM Punk somewhat? And also I know after a long title reign you should do some jobs to return the favor, but aren't they then waisting that by using his losses on Undertaker and The Rock? (The Cena loss made sense storyline wise as he had to get over the hurdle of CM Punk on his way to overcoming The Rock at WrestleMania)

Yeah, but losing two title matches to the Rock is the equivalent of beating Sheamus 18 times, or Dolph Ziggler 142 times.  It's just simple math.

That being said, yeah, it's not ideal to beat Punk a bunch of times and then have him get beat by Undertaker as well, but really what's the alternative?  Punk's the second-biggest star in the company, Undertaker sure as hell isn't gonna take his life into his hands working with Brock, and everyone else on the roster is so far down the totem pole that the Undertaker rub would be worthless anyway.  Maybe Mark Henry with a bigger run-up, but they've barely had time to establish him again.  Turn Ryback heel?  They've already beat him a bunch of times and the shine is gone.  Punk is a credible guy who can take the loss and milk it for months afterwards bitching about it, so they might as well.

Comments

  1. I really don't think the Punk/Taker match is going to be any good. Punk is on fire right now. But does anybody here think Taker is going to have better cardio than the Rock?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Just having a match with the Undertaker at Wrestlemania is equal to the long title reign. It makes him equal to Shawn and HHH.

    ReplyDelete
  3. It shows how much of a beast Brock Lesnar is when Undertaker is afraid to have a fake fight with him.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Punk's had the strongest heel push in quite a while and losses to big time main event stars will not hurt him one bit. He's already got enough wins over Cena under his belt which doesn't make his last loss give his image any harm at all. He's now positioned in an upper-echelon of main event status since his heel turn last year and appears to be a genuine ratings draw.

I feel that the next big topic will be what's in store post Wrestlemania in the main event scene? After watching last night's match and despite the numerous Punk/Cena matches over the last two years I think they could still squeeze out a few main event level gimmick matches like an Extreme Rules match or an I Quit match. Hell a Ladder or TLC match would probably rock everybody's socks off!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Punk can go for the World Title after Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  6. If "Undertaker sure as hell isn't gonna take his life into his hands working with Brock", then he sure as hell shouldn't have gotten in Brock's face and said "Wanna go!?" after he got knocked out by Velasquez.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It doesn't matter how Taker's cardio is. The success of this match will depend solely on whether they can make us believe, for one moment, that Punk is going to win.

If you want workrate, head on over to the indy show that'll running across town from Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  8. And especially King Kong Bundy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I hear there's plenty of great seats still available!

    ReplyDelete
  10. No, having two matches with the Undertaker at Wrestlemania is equal to a long title reign. Having three is equal to having control of the company.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If it was up to me, I'd have taken the titles off of Bryan/Kane before the Rumble, have them feud, and then bring in Taker to assist his kayfabe brother, leading to a WM match.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's true. I don't want every wrestling company to have the same style of wrestling. WWE gives me a certain style of wrestling you don't see anywhere else. Just like ROH gives a different style, NJPW gives a different style, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So long as Punk is allowed to use a microphone on television, he's untouchable. He could lose every match for 3 months and it would take one promo to put him back on the map.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This.

Punk, Cena and Lesnar are the three wrestlers in WWE to whom winning or losing is irrelevant in terms of the presentation of their character and perceived strength of it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've said it before, but he should take a break after Mania and come back with something big again in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Punk and Cena could beat the shit out of each other at every PPV the rest of the year and half the Raws, with eight different gimmick matches, and I don't think I'd have even begun to tire of it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Punk was on something like a one year PPV losing streak and had just been jobbed out to Big Show in a tag match (while teaming with Mason fucking Ryan, no less) and Boreton in a one sided feud for the ages in the lead up to MitB 2011. He can afford these losses and come out as strong or stronger afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That's going to be on Punk's hands, not Takers.

And while I can appreciate slow, story based matches (hell, I loved all the Taker/Trips Mania matches) they needed a lot of gimmicks to make it work. And plus you had the Shawn/Triple H relationship and the Shawn/Taker relationship to help it along.

    Two things.

One, you need something to happen in a match. Just like you need paint to make a painting.

Two, we already saw two "story" matches with Rock...and they kinda blew. I don't think the WrestleMania atmosphere is going to save it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There's a difference in being tough and being sloppy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Who'd be the top heel? Mizark? Brock? Cesaro? Bryan (I would mark hardcore for that)? Swagger?

They need Punk. Every other heel is still pretty much a mid-card talent.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love Bryan. But that'd be a waste of a Taker match.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree. Punk just lost to Rock twice in a row, and his heel reactions are stronger than they were in November(in part due to him actually having a heel character rather than "your town is a dump")

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't get how everyone is stating for a fact that Undertaker is afraid to wrestle Brock. Just because we're not getting that match doesn't mean the Undertaker is scared of Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My solution would be to cut out all the story crap and just go full tilt for 15 minutes. Part of the reason their matches have been slower and story based is because they've been going 30 minutes. Cut down half the time and make it a sprint.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes. He's already worked a house show match. He'll be in better shape than Rock was.

    ReplyDelete
  26. losing two title matches to the Rock is the equivalent of beating Sheamus 18 times, or Dolph Ziggler 142 times.

In other words... the Rock going over doesn't do jack shit for anybody. Scott said it here, there's no need for the Rock to be pushed!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Punk/Bryan vs. Taker/Kane.

Indy Geeks, Inc. vs. VKM's wet dream!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Uh... by the time the WM would roll around, the Taker/Lesnar confrontation will have been nearly 2 and a half years old...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, I agree. But the flip side is, they need him enough that he's in a position of strength that if he agreed with my take, they'd be inclined to grant him some time (because they couldn't deal with the worst-case alternative of losing him altogether).

Besides, with Cena as champ do you really want him feuding with Punk yet again right out of the gate? As much as I love every Punk/Cena match, it's time for something new.

So...yeah, why not Mark Henry? Cena's wrestled him once or twice but it'd be something new. Why not DB for a couple months? That'd be totally new, too. Why not a heel Ryback? His face run is dead anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  30. SPOILERS FOR SATURDAY MORNING SLAM

Better make that 143 losses for Ziggler.

Daniel Bryan vs. Dolph Ziggler opens the show. Heath Slater is at ringside announcing with Josh Matthews. There's a lot of "showing off" being done. Ziggler rolled out of the ring a couple of times. Bryan ended up sneaking in a hurricanrana and got the win via pinfall. After the match, Ziggler and Big E are in the ring angry.

Dolph might as well just ask for his release already.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So nobody thinks cm punk could end the streak? I think he's in a good place in this company and maybe some clout backstage to go with it.

So, personally, i think there's a chance they allow it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh wow. Sick burn, bro.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's funny, I've been listening to some old Wrestling Observer shows from '09 (around the time where Kingston was getting hot, feuding with Orton whilst Ziggler had lost about 100 IC title shots after being poised for a good run) and Alvarez commented on Kofi beating Ziggler by saying "The right man won, they're both on very different career trajectories". I found that funny, a month or so ago, as I thought "Well now Ziggler is gonna be pushed as a World Champ and Kofi is a jobber" but, lo and behold, now they're both jobbers. Two guys who looked like they'd be poised for big pushed FOUR YEARS AGO.

Gotta make them pay those dues, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I haven't seen Union workers pay as many dues as those two. It's time to either piss or get off the pot with Dolph.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Picture Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels match at Survivor Series 1992, then compare it to Survivor Series 1997 - only five years in the difference but it seems like a life time with how much things changed. Kofi and Dolph could meet tomorrow and it'd be no more meaningful that it was 4 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If Punk was ending the streak he'd still be champion

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think there's a chance, if Undetaker has already come to them and said that this is absolutely positively his last match and there's no way he's doing the Cena match next year. If that's the case, I could see them wanting to have him put someone over in the last match.

As for those who think it doesn't do any business to have Punk be the one who breaks the streak, I'd argue this:
    1) If there's any chance that they're doing the Punk-Austin match at Mania next year, then Punk ending the Streak automatically legitimizes him as an equal opponent to Stone Cold.
    2) Ending the streak also tremendously ups Punk's value in years down the road when he slides into a role as "few times a year part-time mega attraction" like HHH, Lesnar, Taker, Rock are in now. Punk as the guy who ended the streak gives him that bump that would make him a mega draw going forward.

Last, I personally fully support the idea of someone ending the Streak. I just don't think the streak ending diminishes Taker's legacy, because it's not like that means the STreak doesn't exist. Joe Dimaggio hit in 56 straight games, and then it ended. Yet his streak is still the focal point of his Legacy. Going 21-1 doesn't negate a 20 year winning streak.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I suggested the same thing. You are very right, friend.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think it's either Cena breaking it or no one at all. That's WWE Logic.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Punk has repeatedly said he will be retiring soon so it seems like it would be a waste to have him be the one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's common sense.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah, pretty much everything I've read about that was a work on both ends. Still doesn't erase the pain of having paid $80 to go see their first PPV main event end in a no contest. Still bitter, even though the undercard of that show was tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everyone says they are going to retire soon. I never believe it until they've been gone for at least five years.

    ReplyDelete
  44. His promo work alone is going to be good enough to weather anything, and it's not like he's Cody or Dolph jobbing out in 5 minute matches. He's getting 30 minutes with Rock and Cena, not going to hurt him in the least. It's kinda like being the Utah Jazz to their Jordan-era Bulls.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Are you saying that Undertaker was forced to do that? Highly unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sad thing is, they'll give Dolph the belt after he cashes in the briefcase and then wonder why he's not over. He's poised to recreate Jack Swagger's illustrious World Title reign. Hopefully he doesn't fall as low down the card in the inevitable wake.

I remember back when Swagger won the belt, I thought they could tell a great story where suddenly he DOES win matches, as if becoming the champ has made him live up to his potential. That way you could play off how sudden his title victory was by building him up more and more with each subsequent victory and, theoretically, legitimising him in the process. Instead he beat Randy Orton by countout or something.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wrestlers are constantly 'working'. It's likely that it was unplanned but 'Taker just took advantage of an opportunity to create some buzz, regardless of if it was going anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Punk doesn't strike me as the guy who keeps going well into his 40's. He is one of the few guys who, if they say they're retired, I'll believe them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. He's one of the guys who seems to have enough interests outside of wrestling that he wouldn't be drawn back by the call of the 'wrestling bubble'. You look at the guys who've stayed away, they all have other shit going on: Michaels with his hunting, Austin with hunting and acting in B-movies, Jericho only comes back when it suits him. Punk seems to be of the same mould, where he could stop wrestling and just hang out, watching bands and reading comics.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Why? He's going to cash in the briefcase and win the world title!

His title reign's going to fall completely on its face, of course, but he's still going to win it!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Having two also puts him equal to Kane.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Isn't Punk already on Mount Perpetually Over at this point? He could spend the rest of the year jobbing, but really, no one's ever going to take away the fact that he holds the fifth-longest world title reign of all-time. I really wouldn't worry about where he's going to end up.

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's right. Even after Punk loses to UT, he's one promo away from a world title main event at Extreme Rules.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You almost had an upvote-able comment, then you had to throw in a random, uninspired shot at indy promotions. *Sigh*

I still believe in you, zanadude.

    ReplyDelete
  55. They have the gimmicks to make it work. The Vise works as a close-call submission, the GTS will lead to close 2-counts, Punk can bust out the piledriver (because it IS Wrestlemania), and they can even have the Shield run in for the triple powerbomb spot. The story can work and Punk can pull it off with what he has available to him.

    ReplyDelete
  56. How? Not flaming, but I'm curious to know why. If it had been done correctly and built up enough, it would've worked.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Maybe I could see him being worried that Brock's a little wreckless like Kurt Angle was with their WrestleMania XIX match. But I don't think he's scared.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I didn't view it as a shot at the indy's. They are in fact running a show across town from WWE aren't they? And don't they bring "workrate"?

    ReplyDelete
  59. The way Bryan's been booked all year (as a comedy geek) there's no way ANYONE would buy him going up against 'Taker. Maybe in a year or two once they realise (like they eventually did with Kurt Angle) that they're leaving money on the table by portraying their best worker as a doofus, he could be built up into something believable but, in the eyes of most fans, Bryan wouldn be squashed by 'Taker in a match, especially at Wrestlemania. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hmmm...a fair point.

    ReplyDelete
  61. That's why I stressed if had been done correctly and built up enough.
Maybe the fact that he would be expected to be squashed, but then holds his own before losing in the end would have made him as a serious guy for the casual fans. But then again, this is the WWE...the simple things seem to be mighty
difficult, so imagine something that actually takes planning.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why did you consider that comment a shot at indys? I was giving them some free PR!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dude's not even 35 yet. Even if he retires on his 40th birthday, that's still another 5+ years of wrestling left, longer than all of Stone Cold's run.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Dude is also far from healthy. I'd bet money on him retiring from a full time role after WM30 and coming back every once in awhile for a big payday.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Cm punk vs john cena iron man match for next chichago ppv?

I think dean Ambrose could be the next feud for cena, after maybe mark henry/heel ryback

    ReplyDelete
  66. The Shield might be enough. But I'd also add ladders...or fire...

It was in the Cell last year, you can't un-escalate.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I really don't think Taker can sprint...at all. The dude was done three years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  68. He worked a match? I thought he just GONGED and shit.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Bryan is A) a comedy jobber and B) pretty much completely lacking in a real character.

    Undertaker "Rest...In....Peace..."

    Bryan "NO!"

    Bryan needs serious rehabilitation.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm stoked for this Punk/Taker match whether Punk wins or not (leaning towards not). It's going to be a nice change to see an Undertaker Mania fued where the opponent doesn't respect him and like him. I've liked the HHH and Shawn stories and matches but it'll be a nice change for Takers opponent to just say "I hate you". A nice hate/grudge match where neither of the men respect or like each other. It's going to be a great fued and I'm thinking a pretty good match.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I remember him saying something about retiring...but I'm pretty sure it was after 2014.

I think Punk is going to have a pretty long career as a Mania wrestler though. If he retires young enough, he could last a long as a part-time wrestler as long he he avoids crazy bumps.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yeah. There's a whole host of gimmick matches they haven't tried yet.

And Punk/Cena could definitely have an awesome Iron Man match.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Punk said 2014 was going to be his last year, so that is what I based it on. But I definitely see him and Cena being the big name part timers they bring in every year for WM in the Rock/Taker roles.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I thought he signed a seven year contract a while ago. Maybe 2014 is his last year as a full-time guy?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think at this stage, Taker doesnt want to absord the kind of punishment he would take in a Brock match. I can respect that too.

    ReplyDelete
  76. One of the first interviews he did after MITB 11, he said he signed a 3 year deal. I think it might have been on Simmons' podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I wonder if this is a one shot deal for Taker. I usually hate 50/50 booking but I wonder if they can protect the streak by having Taker win but with Punk's foot on the rope or under it and then follow it up with Punk bitching and headlining the next's PPV in a rematch vs Taker where Punk goes over clean.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This. This board must get a wee-bit crazy around Wrestlemania time.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm a day late with this, but can I just say: PILE-MOTHERFUCKING-DRIVER!

    That's better.

And no, while I'm not sure it's the best thing either men could be doing, Punk losing to Taker is not going to affect him in the slightest.

    ReplyDelete
  80. After not seeing it for 13-14 years I thought Cena was dead was after the piledriver.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If they make Taker vs Punk - why not let Punk win? With this he could harm John Cena very much, because it would be one thing, that Cena can't accomplish: Namely be the first who can beat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. So Punk would be the "best in the world" and nobody can deny it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. My opinion is that when you get to a certain level, winning and losing doesn't really matter...just the position of the card you are on. CM punk has lost his three last major match ups, yet it's probably at the peak of his popularity because he's looked great in all these matches and they were the top match of the card.

Especially nowadays where the line between midcarder and main eventer is so blurry, it's harder to determine the ones who are actual real main event talent, I'm certain Punk has made it into that rarefied air so to speak. As opposed to someone like Dolph Ziggler who can lose in all his matches while looking great but come off as a chump because he hasn't acheived that level yet that punk has.

So point being...it doesn't really matter if Punk faces Taker in a losing effort, just the fact that he's going up against Undertaker at Wrestlemania (especially post-HBK/HHH saga) is a big deal that is worthy and rewarding of the excellent year he's had.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah, he should probably go work at a dollar store somewhere. WWE is probably paying him like 15k a year.

    ReplyDelete
  84. It's exaggeration + sensationalism, Brock vs Taker wasn't even considered as far as we know, so seriously believing Taker isn't matching up against Brock means he's scared based on that alone is pretty dumb speculation.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Honestly I don't think Punk has long left, He's always said he doesn't want to be doing this when he's 40, some people have taken that to mean he's retiring in 6 years, I've always taken that to mean 1-2 years. Really what else does punk have left to do? I think he's always wanted to main event Wrestlemania, and I guess have a match with Austin, but other than that...there really isn't much to do for Punk at this point. I don't know what it would accomplish to let Punk go over Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  86. How does that reasoning work?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yup. Tag match with Sheamus against Barrett and Sandow at a Waco house show. Rock should have done the same after he got gassed faster than 2003 Scott Steiner at the Royal Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  88. You can have both though. Say what you want about WCW in 1996-98. They had the main event garbage brawls, but then they'd follow it up with some awesome lightweights, then some lucha, then a tag match. It was a lot of different styles all in one show.

I prefer the 3 ring circus approach. If you don't like the clowns, you will like the lions. If you don't like the lions, you'll like the trapeze. Why can't they have different divisions as it were?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I hope not. I LOVE the shield. They're my favorite wrestlers right now, but it is WAY too early for Ambrose to challenge for the title against Cena. Give Ambrose the IC belt and Rollins and Reigns the tag belts maybe. Have them go for the World title against Del Rio. Something. Anything. But it's way too soon to go for the WWE Championship.

    ReplyDelete
  90. To an extent. Jericho said at one point that if you're a heel, you can lose probably 7 out of 10 matches. but you really need to win the remaining 3 in a decisive way. It's the only way that you can maintain drama about who's going to win and put over the faces on a regular basis.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm not sure what solid upper-card faces Punk could go over leading up to Mania, however. Knowing how WWE books, they probably wouldn't put Punk over golden boys like Sheamus or Ryback and virtually every other face except for maybe Orton is on the midcard treadmill. And even Orton's done enough jobs lately that Punk beating him is not really a huge deal.

Punk is going to be selling this Taker feud purely based on mic work.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oh yeah losing 10 major matches in a row is a pretty extreme scenario, but in this case losing to the rock, john cena and undertaker in spectacular fashion is nothing to really sneeze at. Especially coming off a 434 day title reign.

    ReplyDelete
  93. "Bryan needs serious rehabilitation."
That's what Dr. Shelby is for!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Because if Punk wins over UT then that's the same as saying that Rock or Cena or even Ryback *could* beat UT at WM. It's a feat the HHH and HBK couldnt do, in kayfabe a Punk win makes no sense

    ReplyDelete
  95. Huricanrana is clearly the new deadliest move in wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  96. you are kinda right. winning or losing matter only to a certain extent. it seems much more important that Punk is portrayed as being on "the same level" as Cena (and even as being a real threat to The Rock).

of course, if you overdo the losing part you might get into Ryback terrority. that guy really needs to win a bigger program. otherwise the WWE would risk him losing all his credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  97. you are selling some other guys short here, for example Big Show and Daniel Bryan. the might not be "megastars" but those are the kind of workers that seem not to drop below a certain level as long as they are still featured on the main shows.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'd love to know how much of the match did he work? or was he just there for show.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I don't even want to think about a WWE after CM Punk.
Didn't D-Bry say something along those same lines too?

    ReplyDelete
  100. Am I crazy or it very possible punk goes over.undertaker? This could be it for the deadman, so why not put punk over. I get the value of the streak but once ut isn't working wm anymore what's the point

    ReplyDelete
  101. yea ask Cena how brutal a Brock match can be.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Punk could always join the commentary table.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Why have Punk win? Everyone likes both guys. Nobody is rooting for one guy over the other, they'd just be rooting for the spots. The spots will be big (if rigged). I'm sure there'll be a few "Holy shit" chants. There's no reason for Punk to win at WM. If you really wanted, you could give him a rematch at Extreme rules.

    ReplyDelete
  104. If his deal does expire in 2014, the need to do Cena/Punk at Mania next year to go along with the rumored Rock/Brock match and make it a double-main event... with the matches that those two have put on since July 2011, they deserve a chance to top em all on the grandest stage.

    ReplyDelete
  105. The problem is in their extremely long term booking of part timers. They book Triple H vs Brock to main event the top two PPVs, a year in advance. They book Rock/Cena to main event WM for three years (let's not kid ourselves... WM27 was less about Miz being the champion than Rock being the host).

So when someone like Ziggler gets hot... there's no spot for him... and because there's no spot for him... they job him out, because why would you build a person that there's no spot for?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Punk is one of the few guys where I wouldn't be shocked if he goes over. I wish they hadn't booked their younger guys like complete chumps, because they could use Undertaker to make one of their careers.

    ReplyDelete
  107. You can't really have both. There were a lot of styles on the show... but it pigeon-holed a lot of guys. So instead of someone like Jericho advancing when the fans wanted it... he gets speared by Goldberg in the aisle and back to jobbing to Chavo.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Punk can absolutely handle these losses without jeopardizing an ounce of his credibility, mainly because he's got the ability to get all his heat back on the mic the next night. Plus, I think the setup for the UT match is best with Punk. Punk claims to be the best in the world, demands respect, and the Undertaker repsonds, saying that he'll get the respect he longs for by beating him at WM. Easy as pie...

    ReplyDelete
  109. That sounds like such a euphemism for drug use.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Funny.how putting him with aj got him zero heat.

    ReplyDelete
  111. They did. But WWE's talent roster isn't WCW circa 1997, and they certainly don't use it effectively as is. They could, but they don't.

  112. I don't know. I think he could work a 15 minute match at a reasonable pace. Couldn't be any worse than Punk trying to drag and pull Rock to something respectable.

  113. I kept getting visions of austin v owen, and austin stammreing to his feet and somehow pulling that pin off at summer slam 97.

  114. 1. It would be not Cena who ends the streak.

    2. Imagine Shield helping Punk to win the match - they would be even bigger heels than the original DX after SSeries97

    3. Future Taker matches at WM would be exciting again.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Did he shake Taker's hand?

    ReplyDelete
  116. It's a shame that Punk doesn't have the title anymore, a Streak vs. Title Streak match could have been something else.

    ReplyDelete
  117. HBK hit Cena with a piledriver on the steps six years ago at Mania 23.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Cena won't end the streak either. Taker is going to have to retire at some point. He could headline Summer Slam and put Punk over on the way out if he wants, but I don't think anyone at WWE wants the streak to end. I don't think the casual fans want it to end and I don't think a good number of smarks would want that either. But that's just me of course.

  119. Go to Sleep vs. Rest in Peace, that's a pretty compelling tag-line.

    ReplyDelete
  120. wrong it's if there is a good match or not. That is the most important thing. If you can't enjoy that watch something else.

    ReplyDelete
  121. It's still real to you, dammit!

    ReplyDelete
  122. You know, someone the other day said that Cena/Punk is no Rock/Austin. I actually disagree - I think the pairing of the two is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Oh don't get me wrong. They squandered the hell out of the talent they had. WWE does the same thing, but you could intoduce those styles is my point. Will they? probably not.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'd pay to see that. Or even the June pay per view...whatever it ends up being. Let Taker put someone over in a retirement match. Let it be Punk. Just don't make it at WM.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I think that's Cena match to have.

    ReplyDelete
  126. 6 years whatever, still a holy shit move that was once a transition move.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Owen did a weird inverted reverse tombstone thing, it wasn't straight up piledriver. The ban on the move was completely unwarranted.

    ReplyDelete
  128. He wasn't teaming with Swagger...

    ReplyDelete
  129. I kind of remember that.

Thought it was longer than three years, but yeah, I could see that. He's basically done everything. Top heel, second to top face. Punk has said he's goal-oriented. So now that he's climbed the mountain, there's not much left, really.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Bryan has mentioned wanting to join the Peace Corps.

    ReplyDelete
  131. It was the Raw match, not Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I remember him saying the last thing he wanted to do was close out a Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Seriously, is there a more worthless muscle than Big E? Maybe Bam Neely?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Uh...Jericho really doesn't have any credibility when talking about wins and loses. Jericho ALWAYS loses.

    ReplyDelete
  135. "Yeah man, we went to my buddies' place and just GONGED and shit."

    ReplyDelete
  136. BOOM!

This right here. You make not one, but three guys in the process.

The Shield, they killed the Streak.

    ReplyDelete
  137. From the BOD itself: http://www.rspwfaq.com/2007/04/02/wrestlemania-23/

"Now Shawn means business and he pulls the stairs apart and gets a particularly vicious piledriver on them. Cena is bleeding from the top of his head in a nice touch."

  138. Jackson Andrews.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Bbbbbbbut Cole told me beat Stone Cold and The Rock in the same night to become the first Undisputed Champion.
