QOTD - Friday the 12th, 2013

Greetings, citizens of Metropolis [Donner Metropolis, not shitty Snyder Metropolis].

Going with the movie theme, BoD'er Mark Haas sends in a damn good question:

"Caliber, after all the great movie discussion for QOTD, only 1 follow up is possible....best movie scene.

My vote is for the closing scene of The Usual Suspects.  ***SPOILERS***The scene where Spacey is shown going from gimp to stud as the cop realizes what just happened.***SPOILERS***  Loved it.  MH"

Hands down for me, it's the scene in Boogie Nights when Dirk, Chest, and Todd are in Alfred Molina's house, and he's fried off his mind on crack, while the Asian kid lights of fire-works and 80's pop-classics are blaring in the backround. "Ricky Springfield! He's a buddy ah-mine!". Deciding to play Russian Roulette, thinking he's the world's greatest entertainer when by chance he doesn't kill himself, taking a bow and saying "thank you, thank you!" I'm absolutely stunned every time I see it because of how brilliant it is. Boogie Nights happens to be my all time favorite film, and is practically constructed entirely of absolute classic scenes.

How say you?

Comments

  1. The charge of the Riders of Rohan at the end of the Two Towers.

  2. When Atticus Finch walks out of the courtroom after the trial in "To Kill a Mockingbird", and the entire African-American audience in the courtroom (forced to sit in the balcony) silently stands up for him out of respect.

"Miss Jean Louise, stand up! Your father's passing."

  3. I WAS PROMISED THAT THE QOTD WOULD BE WHAT I SUGGESTED YESTERDAY!!! THIS IS A TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE!!! OTHER ANGRY THINGS IN ALL CAPS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. When Kay tells Michael she had an abortion in Godfather II because she didn't want to bring a child into the Corleone crime family. Pacino and Keaton are both just unbelievable in that scene...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Close second for me is the scene near the beginning of Pulp Fiction where Vincent and Jules are driving to the hit. Their "Seinfeld"-esque conversations are just awesome and crack me up every time.

    Andy's escape.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Gotta go with the final scene in Pulp Fiction. My favorite movie of all time, and that's the scene I think about the most. "The truth is, you're the weak, and I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm trying Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd." Still gives me chills.

    ReplyDelete
  8. DeNiro and Pacino in the diner in Heat was awesome

    ReplyDelete
  9. I love that one, but I think I love the one on Pelennor Fields in RotK better. Theoden leading the charge gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. haha, sorry Lax. What was it again? I promise it'll be Monday's feature

Caliber since you brought up a Mark Whalberg movie I am going to give a special honorable mention to the roller coaster scene from Fear. For those that have never seen it, it involves Reese Witherspoon and lets just say I...um..."enjoyed" it in my younger years.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "I am no man!" then BOOM! Sword to the invisible face!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Mr. Holland conducting an orchestra of former students upon his retirement. Gets me every time. *ahem* I mean, Will Ferrell punching the baby in The Campaign!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Love that Boogie Nights scene so much, the tension is just incredible. I even love the scene that is just a really long close-up shot of Wahlberg's unchanging expression. He's high, he's in a dangerous spot, and he's furiously racking his brain for a way to deal with this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Underrated scene is the interrogation scene in The Dark Knight. Been played so many times that you're numb to it, but when you watched it the first time in the theater, the intensity was off the charts. Plus it's the first direct interaction between Joker and Batman in the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haha, exactly. The first time I saw it I kept thinking "Why are they staying on him? ARGH! Fucking tension what the fuck is going on! Fucking firecrackers!"

    ReplyDelete
  17. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 12, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Man it's tough to come up with a favorite scene from that movie. I think I have to go with the pool party though for the simple reason that I REALLY wish I was at that party assuming one of two things.
    1. Scotty J isn't creeping on me
    2. I'm not responsible for a chick OD'ing on cocaine.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I saw The Dark Knight at an opening midnight showing in IMAX. It was the best movie theater experience I've ever had. Everything the Joker did got a "this is awesome" reaction, similar to The Rock's promos during the Attitude era. When he did the "magic trick" with the pencil, the crowd EXPLODED in laughter and cheers for about ten seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Meet Eddie, he's the new kid on the street.

So, you live on the street?

Seriously, the whole film is nothing but classic scenes. From the fantastic, unbroken opening tracking shot that introduces all the characters, to everyone's fall & rise at the end of the film. So. Fucking. Good.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can't call a single favorite scene, but here are three scenes I can skips to and watch in isolation:

    1) Cool Hand Luke--Luke learns that his mother has died and responds by stoically turning around, walking back into his bunk, and playing "Plastic Jesus" on the banjo.

    2) Witness--Some slack jawed yokels start taunting the Amish, smearing ice-cream on one's face, and undercover Amishman John Book (Harrison Ford) beats them senseless. "It's not our way," says an elder. "It's my way," Book growls before kicking ass.

    3) Superman 2--(similar to the Witness scene) Superman regains his powers, returns to the diner where he'd been beaten up in his previous powerless state, and punches the bully across the counter into a pinball machine. "I've been working out," he quips. Superman actually dropped the boyscout act for a second and exercised some petty vengeance!!! Amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not to mention the recording studio scene.

"You've got the touch. You've got the power. Yeah!"

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't have an obvious fave, so I'll just throw out what comes to mind:

-The Ending of Saw...you think the killer is dead and then Elwes finds the tape recorder in his pocket and the freakin' dead body stands up. The score and montage that put everything together is incredible.

-Sam Jackson's reveal in Unbreakable. Some of the best acting he's ever done. How he is almost crying from being so happy that he has found his purpose in life. Speaking of...

-Django Unchained: The library scene. Dicaprio, Jackson.

-Silence of The Lambs: Hannibal escapes. Silence is full of great scenes but the entire sequence of Hannibal escape is awesome.

-The opening of Fellowship of the Ring: It just felt so perfect after reading the books. The Shire. Howard Shore's score. McKellon as Gandalf.

-Rocky Balboa: The Speech. Rocky's son is a disrespectful lil shit the whole movie and Rocky puts him in his place as on Rocky can.

What about the cocaine scene between Amber and Rollergirl? Which reminds me. Were Jack and Amber supposed to be sort of a couple or did she just live with him?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Saving Private Ryan - Opening scene on Normandy Beach.

Personally experiencing combat first hand, although clearly nowhere near that level, the scene just grips me in and they did it perfectly. One of the most terrifying moments in human history, and they nailed it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. +1 for Hannibal's escape. To this day, IMO, that's still the whole reason to watch the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Man, this is hard. I'm going to cop out and name a few.

    1. Luke, Darth Vader, Empire. You know the scene.
    2. The reveal portion of "Old Boy", towards the end of the movie. I don't want to spoil if you haven't seen it.
    3. The stand off in Good, Bad, Ugly. The template for sooo many movies since then.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Old Boy is one of the best movies ever, btw, and shame on anyone on this blog who hasn't seen it. If you haven't, go watch it in Subtitles (NOT dubbed) and prepare to be amazed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Man, the acting in Unbreakable was great I thought, I just hated the movie for some reason. Good scene choice tho.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love Boogie Nights, knowing that John Holmes ended up banging dudes to support a drug habit, got AIDS, died, then had his penis donates to science doesn't allow me to watch it with the sane enjoyment though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The first one to pop into my head was the interrogation/audit scene in The Master, when Joaquin Phoenix keeps blinking and having to start over. Honestly I could list 15 scenes from PT Anderson movies... The Tom Cruise interview scene from Magnolia when the reporter slowly and calmly just breaks him down is another great one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Glengarry GlenRoss - "Coffee's for closers only."

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, awesome movie.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis."
"Billy, I just thought of something funny --- where's Billy?" "He's in school, man." "Haha, oh yeah!".
Finally, the clown presumed to be dead joins in on the big, rousing musical number. Shitty movie, but totally memorable scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  35. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 12, 2013 at 9:48 AM

If you like that one you should watch the interview scene from Boiler Room.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was literally moving back and forth in my seat during the D-Day scene in SPR, afraid I was going to be shot.

    the transformers: the movie ('86)

    - when the decepticons attack the ship and start killing all the autobots on board, especially when megatron shoots ironhide point blank in the face

    - when optimus arrives at autobot city and KICKS MAJOR ASS and then squares off with megatron

    - when spike says 'oh shit!'

    - when megatron, etc are remade by unicron

    - when hot rod becomes rodimus prime, the whole sequence from when he unlocks the matrix to when unicron is destroyed

ah, who are we kiddin', brahs. the entire movie is like the best scene ever

  51. I don't think there is even a cut during that entire scene in The Master. It's just the camera on Freddie's face for about five minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Same on. Drunk Chicks was one of the mags.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Love that scene too. I just think in the Two Towers when Theoden gives his speech, to Gimli blowing the horn, the charge at the front gate and then Gandalf to the rescue just gets me giddy to watch. The scene from Return of the King comes a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  54. No, I'm your father nuff' said..

    ReplyDelete
  55. The "God Bless America" scene at the end of The Deer Hunter has always been poignant to me.

    Others:
    Toy Story 3: The incinerator
Jurassic Park: the first time Alan Grant sees a dinosaur
Goodfellas: The death of Tommy DeVito and DeNiro's reaction, also, the whole helicopter day sequence.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The first scene that immediately came to mind was the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds, where Landa talks with the farmer. Just a fantastic scene introducing us to the badass that is Landa (and the awesome acting of Christopher Waltz), the milk, the pipe!!!, the way Landa speaks English to tell the farmer what will happen...amazing.

  57. Hell yes. From pulling the poster down to reveal the whole, to the shot of him out in the rain, that gives med chills everytime

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yeah, both kick so much ass. Theoden gets some badass lines in those two moments.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Do we really need to be warned spoilers on a 20 year old movie?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm going to turn off the film-student-pedantic-argument-about-scene-defintion side of me. The assassination/baptism scene in the Godfather. The Godfather is the only perfect movie I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  62. As someone who grew up with current scenery chewing Pacino the Godfather Saga was a revelation. That moment, where Michael seems to vibrate with rage is just one of the best acting moments I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 2 best scenes for me:

Rocky 2: Adrian "Win; Win" Mickey "What are we waiting for?"

Bad News Bears 2: "Let Them Play; Let Them Play; Let Them Play"

    ReplyDelete
  64. My theory on why Titanic won Best Picture that year: Boogie Nights and LA Confidential split the votes.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Do we really need a complaint about the posting of spoilers on a 20 year old movie?

    ReplyDelete
  66. My tenth grade English class watched this movie and were only half-paying attention (as 10th graders would do watching a movie from 1960). After Atticus' speech and his walk out of the courtroom, the students gave him a standing ovation themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I had a writing professor who said every action scene should play out like a movie itself. I think of the arrest of the Joker as like that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have no idea how they're going to adapt Old Boy for a North American audience. Spike Lee is a talented director but I'm not sure he can pull it off.

    ReplyDelete
  69. A few other scenes I love:
The Basterds killing Hitler in Inglorious Basterds. I'm Jewish and that scene :kisses fingers: oh yeah.
Bruce getting out of the pit in the Dark Knight Rises. I knew it was going to happen, you knew it was going to happen. But that score and the leap, it's amazing.
Pretty much everything from Harvey Dent being lead away in cuffs to Bruce Wayne sitting defeated in his penthouse in the Dark Knight, not a single scene but Jeebus.

The news team gang fight in Anchorman + the postmortem scene in Anchorman.
The scene between Mickey Rourke and Evan Rachel Wood at the boardwalk in the Wrestler.

    ReplyDelete
  70. HHH beating Booker T at WM 19.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Boogie nights-opening scene

Scarface-Say hello to my little friend

Unbreakable-Dinner scene with willis and wright.

Dirty harry-Do you feel lucky punk?

    TDK-pencil joke.

First blood-the conversation between Rambo and Trautman.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm holding my breath for it, for sure. I think it'll be good just based on the acting talent (especially the vastly underutilized Elizabeth Olsen), but I've heard they're also changing the ending.

I'm not sure if Spike understood this or not, but... THE ENDING MAKES THAT MOVIE.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'll name a few from one of my faves, The Big Lebowski:

    1. The entire "handoff" scene, including the all-time quotable "No Walter, you're not wrong, you're just an asshole!"
    2. The introduction to Jesus.
    3. "DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS, LARRY?!"
    4. The Dude's final dream sequence, wherein he is handed bowling shoes by a Saddam-lookalike.

    ...Among others.

...I'm starting to think I need to watch that movie again.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Also gotta show some love for the entire 4th "Story" in Four Rooms. Tarantino's challenge scene always manages to entertain me.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Another one I forgot is the "Ordinary World" scene from Layer Cake. "Let's make it 10, 10's a nice...round...number.." and then Boom the whole scene turns and great use of a song.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'll try to put scenes that haven't already, but I apologize if I overlooked their admission already.

-"Dad...you want to have a catch?" scene from Field of Dreams.
-Where George McFly gets violent again at the Under the Sea dance right as Marty is fading, and then BAM, all is well.
-Any scene from Pulp Fiction or the Princess Bride... in my opinion, they are perfect movies with NO wasted scenes and classic moments or lines from each scene. I'm not saying they are my absolute favorite movies (but both in my top ten), but I consider them perfectly paced and executed.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I have no qualms in admitting that particular scene in Field of Dreams gets me every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I was going to mention For A Few Dollars, but Iove Eastwood's meeting with Van Cleef. Magic. Though that end…

    ReplyDelete
  93. Yeah you pretty much nailed it with Boogie Nights. For shits and giggles, get yourself an 8 ball and play the Boogie Nights coke game. Everytime someone does a line on-screen… you do a line. Its fun!

    ReplyDelete
  94. You see? That's the sort of thing that I'd know if I kept up with the pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Man, what's that movie with Edward Norton as the teen with split personalities who kills a priest? His reveal to Gere is a great scene.

    ReplyDelete
  96. You could also include Hitchcock's "Rope" in this conversation, but then you'd be cheating just a little bit because the entire movie is just one scene. The movie technically only has one camera cut. Still awesome 65 years later. Classic Jimmy Stewart, too.

    ReplyDelete
  97. You are quickly becoming my favorite asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Primal Fear, I believe. Norton had (and maybe still has) the opportunity to enter the pantheon of all-time great actors. His film choices over the last ten years have not been perfect, however.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yea, he's AWESOME in some stuff but I haven't really liked any of his recent movies.

    ReplyDelete
  100. American History X. Nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  101. What movie? I think you forgot that part.

    ReplyDelete
  102. The part that gives me chills in that scene is "Au Revoir Shoshana"

    ReplyDelete
  103. The part that always gets me in Toy Story 3 is the last scene where Andy is giving up his toys.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yeah, it's enough said, BUT... why not mention his work in Primal Fear, Rounders, Fight Club, and 25th Hour as well? The man could do it all. I also like his scenes in The Score, Incredible Hulk (too bad they deleted half his scenes in favor of ACTION/EXPLOSIONS/BANG!!!), and Red Dragon.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Are they gonna keep the twist the same though? A lot of people know it, so it won't pack the same punch.

    ReplyDelete
  106. A Scorsese montage with the Rolling Stones playing over it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. 30-something years later and they still can't outdo Superman II. But I guess it's hard to find that Reeve-Hackman-Stamp combo that had crazy chemistry together AND had the right balance of heart/humor.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I mean Fight Club is my #2 video of all time, but his performance in that movie doesn't even come close to how powerful he came off in AHX. The only movie you mentioned that I'd even put in contention is 25th Hour. Rounders is amazing as well, but same as Fight Club. Haven't seen Primal Fear, so I can't comment on that one.

I have a huge affinity for a number of scenes in Pulp Fiction, including the Royale with Cheese sequence and the adrenaline scene. "No, *I* am your father!" "I could've been a contenda" The Copacabana sequence in Goodfellas.

My personal favorite is Alec Baldwin's one-scene wonder in "Glengarry Glen Ross". The wonderfully abrasive language, the murderer's row of talent (and Pacino's not even in the scene!), a lot of characterization and stakes established...just fantastic. And it's quotable as hell too:

"Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers only."

"First prize is a Cadillac Eldorado, anyone want to see second prize? Second prize, set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

    "A-B-C, ALWAYS BE CLOSING!"

    "What's your name?"
"FUCK! YOU! *THAT'S* my name, you know why, mister?! Because you drove a HYUNDAI to get here tonight, I drove an $85,000 BMW, that's my name. And your name is "you're wanting" and you can't play the man's game, you can't close...then go home and tell your wife your troubles."

"You know what it takes to sell real estate? It takes BRASS BALLS to sell real estate."

    ReplyDelete

Jesus yes. By sheer coincidence, the theater immediately got infused with a lethal dose of dust that made my eyes water and I couldn't stop.

  111. I'm thinking The Game?

    ReplyDelete
  112. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 12, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Honorable mention to Al Pacino emasculating Kevin Spacey towards the end: WHERE DID YOU LEARN YOUR TRADE, YOUSTUPIDFUCKINGCUNTYOUIDIOT, WHOEVER TOLD YOU THAT YOU COULD WORK WITH MEN?!

    ReplyDelete
  113. A Bronx Tale - When the bikers realize they've walked into the wrong bar.

A more sentimental favorite is the opening montage of Up, which never fails to bring this grown man to tears.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Derp...my bad.

    Yes, The Game.

    ReplyDelete
  115. - WALL-E, when WALL-E and EVE are flying around outside the ship while the Captain asks the computer to define dancing
    - Rounders, when Teddy KGB takes Mike McD's bankroll
    - Glory, when the Irish sergeant beats Thomas down during bayonet training
    - Young Frankenstein, "Puttin' on the Ritz"

    ReplyDelete
  116. What's really funny is the fucking bank job in Secaucus...
That whole scene from that line to pecsi talking about the cop knocking him out and waking back up and saying "I thought I told you to go fuck yourself" ping pow...all the way to when pecsi say "I don't know about you hendry I think you might fold under questioning"

Its funny, its tense, its iconic, I have to watch it twice every time it comes on. My favorite scene ever. Plus it gave you the phrase "you stuttering prick you" to call your friends.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Biker science is a great call dude

    ReplyDelete
  118. That's only my 2nd favorite scene in Goodfellas.

"Now go home and get your fucking shine box."

    "Mothafuckah mutt!"

    ReplyDelete
  119. Jack lemmon and Pacino killing spacey are soooooo good and the Baldwin scene is just the best. God I love that movie!!!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Frank Vincent can't help but steal the scene anytime I see him. I'm also a sucker for the part where Henry takes Dr. Melfi to the restaurant and they just do the one long shot. I'm watching goodafellas when I get home now

  121. Phenomenal choices. FAFDM is my favorite of the trilogy, and that scene is tremendous. So many great scenes in it, but I also love Indio's revenge. Volonte is incredible as Indio.

This might be blasphemy, but as great as Wallace was as Tuco, I thought Good, the Bad, and the Ugly missed Volonte.

  122. I can watch that movie on a loop.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Yeah, I may need to watch it sometime this weekend. It's been long enough.

I love when they're eating at Tommy's mom's place while Billy Batts is in the trunk and Tommy's mom shows them her art and they realize how much the guy in the painting looks like him. Sick and hilarious at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  124. This probably tells everyone more about me than they want to know, but I can't stop laughing every time I see Tommy shoot Spider.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Jimmy Conway: I'm
kidding with you, you fucking shoot the guy?!

    Henry Hill: He's
    dead.

    Tommy DeVito: Good
    shot. I'm a good shot.

    Anthony Stabile:
Hard to miss at this distance.

  126. I used to revere Superman II, but I watched it all the way through for the first time in probably about 20 years the other day, and it didn't hold up very well. All the weird plot inconsistencies had me stressing out. First and foremost, how in the hell did they get back from the Fortress of Solitude (which Supes had flown them to) after he gave up his powers? Don't tell me the fort is a reasonable walk to the main-road and then just a hop, skip, and jump to Metropolis.

  127. Perhaps it's vital that I see the Donner cut.

  128. There is an interview with Hitchcock where he gives a great explanation about how to build tension in a scene - show two people having a normal conversation, then pan down and there is a ticking bomb under the table. Suddenly, the audience is freaking out, and this boring conversation is suddenly very important. We're in on the secret. Slowly panning down to Shoshana's family under the floorboards is a perfect example of this approach.

That scene really resembles Jules talking to Brett in "Pulp Fiction", too. Same emotions - you know they're fucked from the start. Lots of similar edits too, such as when there is no cutting away when Landa drinks the milk/Jules drinks the soda.

I LOVED when Landa sees the farmer smoking his pipe, then asks if he can also smoke his, and pulls out a bigger pipe. I remember reading an interview with Quentin where he said that was Landa's "I've got you now, motherfucker!" moment.

  129. I wanted to cheer out of sadistic glee the first time I watched that scene. When he pulled out the brass balls, it was like a bonus prize.

  130. The Decepticon attack and Optimus arriving at Autobot City are both epic.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I upvoted this not reading anything past "the transformers: the movie ('86)" this is STILL my favorite movie ever by MILES... and Hot Rod opening the Matrix hearing Optimus Prime "Arise Rodimus Prime" Galvatron realizing what is going on and saying "NO!" "The Touch" playing in the background... all of that still gives me goosebumps 27 years after I first saw. I still maintain I hold the world record for most viewings of that movie.

  132. "Megatron must be stopped... no matter the cost"

    ReplyDelete
  133. Fuck yeah. Just a flawless movie. I've never seen a movie that long where at the end I'm just thinking how I want more. Another favorite is Jack's indignation in that scene where they're filming the gonzo porn in the limo: "don't just jam it in there! This is ROLLERGIRL!" Reynolds' best work by a mile.

Its funny too how in the scene you gave (which I agree, is the best in the movie), people used to always remember "Sister Christian" since that was sort of the "lost classic" of those songs. But now generally I always hear "Jesse's Girl" mentioned with that scene. Fucking brilliant use of music.

they're showin' it this weekend at a local theater. i wont be able to make it, but they confirmed to me that it is indeed the cut where spike cusses. if you remember, back when it was released on home video, they took it out (but left in ultra magnus sayin' 'dammit')

i snatched up the 20th anniversary on dvd when it came out. i love the old ads although the kids' faces bein' blurred is weird

i saw it in the theater, too

i've still got the soundtrack, on tape from back then when it came out, and then on cd i specially ordered from media play in the 90's. apparently there was a limited botcon cd of vince dicola's score; i'd love to have that.

I even have a sticker book/story book thing you used to be able to buy... that I unfortunately put the stickers in... and countless other pieces of memorabilia etc...

  138. Me and my friend were on a sever Django kick when the dvd came out, and that scene got a lot of quoting. "Now why that German give a fuck who that uppity nigga in love with, I'm sho I don't know." "If they was snakes they'da bit me" "Thank you Stephen you welcome Calvin." I truly don't give a fuck that Q's dialogue has gotten so precious in his later years, it's so fun to quote.

  141. I feel like the rise of Tyler Perry has scared Spike away from making his Big Message Movies, which were really starting to suck, out of fear of being compared to him. ("Coonery and buffoonery", is how Lee put it). so now I think he's gonna try to focus on his more regular features, which he's always done a good job at. So I think he can do it.

    ReplyDelete
  142. That's the only scene they added to the original play to pad the length of the movie, and it just nails everything about it. It's so perfect that Ricky Roma isn't there, because he would have butted heads with Baldwin and fucked with the chemistry of that scene. Plus it gave the world "Fuck you, that's my name."

    ReplyDelete
  143. In keeping with my John Hughes theme, the car rental scene from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

    Better watched than transcribed.

  144. If we were playing "favorite quotes", I'd probably go with this one:

"You know everything is not an anecdote. You have to discriminate. You choose things that are funny or mildly amusing or interesting. You're a miracle! Your stories have NONE of that. They're not even amusing ACCIDENTALLY!"

    ReplyDelete
  145. That incinerator scene in Toy Story 3 is just brutal. Its like they thought "oh, all you people who cried at the Jessie montage in 2 think you're too old to fall for it again? Let us lay THIS shit on you." Between the subtlety of WALL-E, the grimness of the early part of Up, and TS3, Pixar was really pushing to turn the kids of the world into moody film students. But to glorious results.

  146. The dinner scene in AHX is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Primal Fear is pretty forgettable, but that last scene almost redeems the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Hell yes. And also, is it consensus that Jules drinking from Brett's Sprite is the only time in recorded history anyone has looked badass drinking from a straw?

  150. I love the scene in First Blood where Trautman tells the cops exactly what kind of shit they have just gotten themselves into.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I love the over the credits wackiness there. Quentin's "oh Jesus I forgot the fucking finger!" gets me every time. Too bad the rest of the movie sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Also Death to Smoochy. No, I'm not kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I really want to see footage of the stage run where Pacino played Shelly Levine instead of Ricky Roma.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Ehhh, I dunno about the rest of it. The first story is pretty mediocre, and the second one has entertained me before, but I have to be in the mood, I guess. Plus, I love Jennifer Beals, what can I say? The 3rd story (Rodriguez) is one of my favorites, maybe better overall than the 4th, though the 4th will always be my favorite. Wisecrackin' Tarantino + drunk Bruce Willis = quality.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Oh fuck. Here we go.

"How much more black could this be? None more black."

"Believe me, she was doing something much worse than smelling it."

And of course, the whole "Children of Stonehenge" sequence.

I'm just going to stick with comedic scenes here:

The entire bit in Snatch where Tyrone (aka the British Biggie Smalls) is driving the other 2 guys to rob Brick Top's bookie. Rather then transcribe it I'll just post a link.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRJxNpPj6Zc

The "Go fuck your mother" scene from Goodfellas, as mentioned by Jobber.

The "Suck my white ass, ball!" and "You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?" scenes from Happy Gilmore.

"You don't like me because I'm white!" "I don't like you because you're going to get me killed!" Die Hard 3.

The scene from How High with Cypress Hill. "Hey man, what the fuck is the plate for?

  159. They totally had me at the incinerator, hook, line, and sinker. Even though logically there was no way it was ending there, for a minute I actually bought. I was losing my mind, "Holy fuck, Toy Story's ending as a tragedy!?" Then when they survived I had the biggest grin on my face at just how brilliant Pixar was to have sucked me in.

  163. The silent look and slowly reaching for each other's hands gave me chills in the theater, and still does if I see it now. There was a genuine laugh of relief when the aliens made the save with the claw(THE CLAWWW!), so all thr parents didn't have to explain why Woody was burned to death.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Underacting Pacino is awesome. Check out Dog Day Afternoon for another great Pacino performance, especially the scene where he's on the phone with his girlfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  165. The wave goodbye about had me; my buddy was actually sobbing in the theater.

  166. Always Be Closing. I love the Christmas spoof Baldwin did on SNL years ago where he momentarily goes into the real ABC speech.

  167. Transformers: The Movie is such a quotable movie. "Such heroic nonsense."

  168. The Iron Giant taking off to stop the missile. I watched the movie with my little cousin last night, and was fighting back tears...apparently, a dust tsunami had hit my living room.

  172. Random scenes I love, part 1 - The scene between Hans Gruber and John McClain in Die Hard, which ends with McClain running across the glass in his bare feet.

The final shootout in the church in The Killer.

The reveal of Frank in Once Upon a Time in the West, followed by the duel between Frank and Harmonica at the end.

The toy train chase in Wallace and Gromit's "The Wrong Trousers."

Where Black Dynamite and crew figure out what Code Kansas stands for.

The final car chase in The Blues Brothers.

Charlie Chaplin's final speech in The Great Dictator.

"Puttin' on the Ritz" in Young Frankenstein. Also when the Monster meets Gene Hackman's Hermit.

Willard's breakdown in the beginning of Apocalypse Now. Also anything involving Colonel Kilgore and Kurtz.

When Pacino talks to his "girlfriend" on the phone in Dog Day Afternoon.

The opening 10-15 minutes of Drive.

"You fuck my wife?" scene from Raging Bull (still Scorsese's best film, IMO)

Colin Firth's character learns of the death of his lover in A Single Man.

Ash vs. his hand in Evil Dead 2.

The transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London.

Brundle-Fly discusses insect politics in The Fly.

    "One of us!" in Freaks.

The dance floor and hospital scenes in Jacob's Ladder.

Skeletor becomes a god in Masters of the Universe. Frank Langella as Skeletor in general.

"Wolfman's got nards!" in Monster Squad.

The Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth.

The family dinner scene in Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

  175. "Shoot... the... glass!" from Die Hard.

The flashback scene in Godfather 2 right after Fredo is killed, showing Michael with his siblings arguing about him fighting in the war, which basically shows how far he fell as a human being.

The Avengers assembling for the first time during the battle in New York. Hulk smashing the shit out of Loki gets an honorable mention as well.

The opening of the Ark in Raiders. Practically every line of dialogue between Indy and his dad in Last Crusade.

Now I want you to climb up there and put your head in that noose"

You know what? I'll just go with like the entire last 15 minutes of Good, Bad, Ugly. Everything from "Ecstasy of Gold" to the credits is perfect.

Bane destroying Batman will always be awesome to me.

The scene in Rocky where Micky comes to ask Rocky to be his manager. "What about my prime Mick?!"
