Match of the Day: Steamboat & Douglas v. Blonds

Hello again Scott, I just found this little gem on youtube. it's the
match where the Blondes first won the titles. It's a very good match,
but the crowd seems a little off. Was this during the period when they
were taping at Disney? Well anyways hope everyone enjoys it:

Disney tapings didn’t start until after the Blonds won the titles.  This was from Worldwide, although they had another match before this that hit ***** and circulated on a bunch of tape traders’ lists.  It was a hell of a feud.

  1. Ricky Steamboat might be the most underrated wrestler of all time -- The man could have a good to great match with anybody -- Tell me if I'm wrong here but I remember when the Great Muta came to Crockett Steamboat was the guy chosen to put him over as a legitimate threat -- I remember going to a show in Stockton and Muta beat him cleanly and I thought holy shit, if Muta can beat The Dragon then he must be a stud -- Steamboat had the unique ability to sell just about anybody's offense -- Suspension of disbelief was a foregone conclusion when he wrestled...

  2. More of these matches need to hit DVD. It's also the Blondes/Dos Hombres match from Slamboree, which doesn't even have Douglas!

  3. I was there for this. It was in Macon,Ga in March 93. Big Worldwide taping. Orndorff won the tv title that night as well.

  4. I think for a while there they were deliberately using that match to avoid paying Douglas royalties, although now Douglas has been popping up in ECW-related stuff again so that "feud" might be done with.

  5. While I agree that Steamboat was awesome, I don't think he's "underrated." Who DOESN'T rate Steamboat as one of the very best wrestlers ever?

  6. I think this was the first feud that really got me hooked on great wrestling as a kid, rather than just the spectacle of it. These two teams fought often enough (and on free TV enough) that every time they advertised Steamboat/Douglas vs. the Blondes, I was ALL IN to watch that show.

  7. Seriously? Douglas has had a match on every ECW DVD WWE has released, he's on the Starrcade DVD, who says they're avoiding using him?

  8. Always amused me when Douglas would moan about not being used in WCW...and then finding out he was winning tag belts with FUCKING STEAMBOAT.
