Question Of The Day: The Return

Howdy folks, I figured since we lost our unofficial community organizer, I'd take a run at doing the QOTD, which will hopefully be more successful than my video game reviews. Of course that pro-wrestling show with Xpac and Vampiro on MTV was more successful than my video game reviews, but hey, who's counting (besides me).

So, here's the question for this lovely Saturday Afternoon:

What's your favorite comeback?

To get the ball rolling, I have a few:

Wrestling: Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H at Summerslam 2002.

When I first heard this match was happening, I had never seen Shawn Michaels wrestle, having only known him as 'the guy' from a previous generation I never watched.  So I was expecting his 'match' against Triple H to be, well, essentially what we got a bunch of years later when Bret squared off against Vince.

But instead I was absolutely blown away, and it was probably the first sense I got for great story-telling in a match at a young age - and how they worked real life issues (Shawn's back, the HHH/HBK Bromance) into a worked angle that came off like gangbusters.

Movies: RDJ is Iron Man, baby.

RDJ was sort of a punchline up until the whole 'Iron Man' thing for people born in the 80s. Sure, you had heard of him, he popped up in a few roles here and there and was mostly good, but unfortunately he was most known as the guy who did the drugs and got caught - so like a less personable Charlie Sheen.

Then he kind of cleaned himself up (he actually just hired a driver) and got cast as Tony Stark, which is about as perfect as you could get for that role - up there with Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  It was great!

Misc: "I know what you are, but what am I?"

A playground classic, popularized by Pee-Wee Herman.

Other bloggy business:

1. Would anyone be interested in a Madden 25 league on Xbox 360?
2. Would anyone be interested in a "Golf Star" league on iPad? It's a great little golf game, it's free, and fun.
3. Lemme know if you think this is a good idea, be sure to send any questions *you* may have to p.meekin@ebertpresents.com,

Comments

  1. I don't think there's an answer better than HBK. Also, what happened to Caliber?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Didn't RDJ get nominated for an Oscar for his role as Charlie Chaplin? He was always considered a super talented guy derailed by drugs.

As for Sheen, his roles in Major League, Platoon and Hot Shots (to name a few) will always give him a pass in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think they wanted him to job to Brock Lesnar in a KOTR Qualifier so he booked it.

Actually I think he was getting harassed, annoyed, hacked, etc and didn't wanna put up with the abuse, which is understandable, we were pretty hard on the little bugger.

    ReplyDelete
  4. It's possible but if you were born in say, 1986, you really only knew him as "that guy with the drug thing" until Iron Man or maybe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Paraphrasing, since I don't remember the exact line.

Triple H: "Why should I reward you after all the thing's you've said about my delicate little flower Stephanie?"
Chris Jericho: "If you ask me, Stephanie lost her flower a LONG time ago!"

    ReplyDelete
  6. Flair's comeback to WWE(2001) and subsequent run he had.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Now he's the biggest movie star in the world.

    Baller.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah, I don't know about that. He wasn't a punch line. I think it was generally understood that he was a talented, troubled guy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. He's big, but not the biggest.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Flair is like a cockroach who will just never die; he came back from the plane crash, from jim herd screwing him over, going back to wcw after the wwf run, going back to wwf after wcw folded, then going to tna, then going back to wwe.

    ReplyDelete
  11. For best movie comeback, it has to be Ben Affleck. He went from washed-up joke to oscar winning moviemaker.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He thought Blink 182 and The Expendables were the greatest things ever. BURN HIM!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I disagree. He was known as being one of the best actors out there who for a while was fighting and losing a drug problem.

    Basically what Flair said

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have a big long, cock-blocking story about the Expendables I may tell sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This guy reviews movies and just said Robert Downey Jr was a punchline until he made a children's movie??????? Uh....no. He was considered one of the greatest actors in the world who had killed it in dozens of roles before he played iron man. If anything I was worried that role would have been beneath an actor of his caliber but he made it work brilliantly.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Best comeback within the confines of a narrative: Hot Fuzz. When Simon Pegg gets run out of town by the good old folks network, and he comes back with Nick Frost, armed to the teeth. The best scene is running straight at the old lady while she's loading her shotgun, and kicking her square in the fucking face. I marked out big time!

    ReplyDelete
  17. It wasn't very his first game back, but MJ dropping the double-nickel at Madison Square Garden would have to be my favorite comeback. That, and the subsequent three straight titles and all.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think there's a bit of a generation gap on the blog. I remember Downey from Back to School, as the best friend of Rodney Dangerfield's kid...then Less Than Zero...then the drugs....then Chaplin...then the drugs....then you know. He has always been heralded as a talented guy, but fucked up many times, until finally, redemption. If you were born before 1983, welcome to the club. If you were born in 1990 or later, uhhh....enjoy your twerking videos.

    ReplyDelete
  19. But he really wasn't though. Dougie makes a few snide comments, he doesn't get the banning he (unjustifiably) wanted and takes his ball and go home?

Especially after he acted like he was a major contributor to the site and Scott just brushes him aside.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think calling him a punchline is a bit harsh. Even post-drugs pre-Iron Man, he made Zodiac, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Good Night and Good Luck. There was Oscar buzz for him in Zodiac

    ReplyDelete
  21. Best comeback: The jerk store called and they're running out of you.

    /thread

    ReplyDelete
  22. Music: I don't really remember Aerosmith in their early days, but they were pretty much out of the picture for years until Run DMC made "Walk the Way" and then they put out Permanent Vacation and went on quite a run of hits and videos.

Disney Animated Movies: Not popular and no hits for years until the Little Mermaid kicked off the run of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. They just kept topping themselves each time out.

Football: A nice mini-return. Drew Bledsoe gets hurt and clears the way for Tom Brady to enter the scene and lead the Patriots to the AFC title game in Pittsburgh. Tom gets knocked out of the game and Drew comes in off the bench and throws a TD. It was a nice last hurrah for him before leaving the team.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I know that a lot of you guys are young, but Downey absolutely was a punchline for a while. He broke into somebody's house a took a nap in a little girl's bed! He was considered erratic and completely unreliable from the early 90s to the early 2000s.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was born in 1982 so I'm-in that club but if your a fucking movie reviewer I don't care when you were born, thatdude needs to watch less than zero, wonder boys, Chaplin, home for the holidays, zodiac, shortcuts, Richard III, black and white, he was even great in natural born killers. These movies might not have had souvenir cups at burger king but if you want to be giving your opinion on film you oughta see those movies-before you call Robert Downey Jr career a punchline.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh yeah? Well, I had sex with your wife!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yea, and then he did an awesome job hosting SNL. That period in the late 90s, early 00s where he'd get roles and then fuck it up (Ally McBeal) was sad. I think Gothika was the first movie where he was clean?

Also, I don't think he gets his full salary from a movie until production is completed

    ReplyDelete
  27. What's the difference? You're their all time best seller

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm gonna say best comeback was magic Johnson getting votes into the all star game by the fans after retiring for HIV, coming back for the game, and winning MVP.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really have to see that fuckin' movie. I've heard nothing but amazing things and never catch it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So you don't watch movies made before you were born?

    ReplyDelete
  31. You can still do quality work and be a punchline at the same time, for the record.

A more harsh example: Mel Gibson is a punchline, but has been pretty good in a punch of roles since his little drunk episode. But the guy is still, now, by and large known for his faults, not his work.

At the time I was coming of age, RDJ was known first as a drug guy, and an actor second. He's still good, but his primary notoriety was that of being a drug addict.

    ReplyDelete
  32. His wife's in a coma.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yea, but he wasn't a punchline. It was more "Man this guy is such a talented actor, sucks he can't kick the drugs". Aside from what happened in summer 1996, he never made a public spectacle of himself like Charlie Sheen.

Mel Gibson is a punchline, but he's really done nothing since the arrests. Edge of Darkness didn't do much. The Beaver bombed and he had a movie go straight to DVD. I guess Machete is his attempt at a comeback.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Most people don't remember or even realize that RDJ was a cast member on SNL during the 85-86 season, which was largely regarded as one of the worst in the history of the show. His problems with drugs was known then too, along with Anthony Michael Hall.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The funny part about RDJ is he's been nominated for TWO Oscars. Chaplin...and Tropic Thunder.

    ReplyDelete
  36. On paper that's such a great cast. Joan Cusack, Randy Quaid, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Jon Lovitz, Nora Dunn, Damon Wayans, Dennis Miller, etc.

Three Oscar nominations alone from that cast. Four of the five highest grossing films to feature an SNL cast member also come from that cast

    ReplyDelete
  37. Corey Feldman is a punchline. Rdj was a movie star with a coke habit.

    ReplyDelete
  38. When I was 10 years old in 1996? Probably about as often as any other kid, which is to say not really a lot?

Also, I'd like to point out I said "sort of a" punchline.

I'm saying, *at the time* he was a guy associated with drugs first, and movie making second, especially as a kid you'd hear the name and the story, but not really know who he even *was* in a film because I wasn't particularly interested in grown up movies at the time?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Michael Jackson, one of the best entertainers of all time. Also: Punchline.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There's an incredible book about SNL that's told almost entirely through interviews with the cast, it's probably super cheap now, and a fantastic little tome for potty reading.

    ReplyDelete
  41. mostly music for me:

    - accept's 'blood of the nations' - definite proof that there is life after udo

    - black sabbath's 'heaven and hell' - definite proof that there is life after ozzy

    - ac/dc's 'back in black' for obvious reasons

    - exodus's 'tempo of the damned' - too bad the reunion with zetro didnt last

    - voivod's selt-titled album in 2003: rip piggy

    - new self titled album from queensryche: geoff who?!

also, the new season of beavis and butthead a few years ago - mike judge never lost a step and was able to work in the changes to pop culture (jersey shore, 16 and pregnant) seamlessly

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yea, I read from Live from NY all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ll cool j's 'mama said knock you out'

*listens to it... 1st line comes on*

    ...well shit :(

    ReplyDelete
  44. Michael Jackson was also a weirdo.

Robert Downey Jr just did drugs

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just to bring in a new generation

I was born in the mid 90's, and didn't even know who Robert Downey Jr. was. Neither did any of my friends. As far as I can tell he wasn't a punchline to the youth (Mel Gibson is), but I would defiantly call it a comeback. Iron Man is the shit!

teenage girls are putting up posters in their room in worship to his attractiveness--and he's OVER 50.

Also, If Caliber is going to quit gigs because He can't deal with trolls, he probably shouldn't write for the internet. His skin is far to thin for him to take it.

I'm writing a contribution to a group piece at PtbN (Where Caliber left for) right now, and plan to pitch my first solo article after that--but never fear, I'm here to stay at the blog, I love this place and you guys...Even the insufferable ones are part of the extended BoD family. (Like a drunk uncle, or a crazy aunt with tin foil hat)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Shawn Michaels
    Robert Downey Jr

    and for music

Bat Out Of Hell 2 was a huge comeback

    ReplyDelete
  47. ITS MOOPS

(i just wanted to play too)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Caliber thought he was better than he actually was.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't think I've met a human being younger then 30 who's heard Bat out of Hell 2. everyone has heard the first one.

I might have been a huge comeback when it happened (I honestly have no idea) but man it did NOT have the same longevity in it

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would do anything for love...but I won't do that, was a great freakin' song. Operatic Rock I could get behind. It was like Black Metal with melody.

    ReplyDelete
  51. How is it over there? I've always wanted to get into the sports side of things, but am curious how the community / posting / guidelines work.

    Do they pay? :-P

    ReplyDelete
  52. For pretty much a year it was everywhere. Then he turned into a mental who stole Gary Busey's paints.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I can get by Blink 182 being his favorite band, but THE MOST AMBITIONS ALBUM EVER is absurd.

If I'm asked I say Alice Cooper is my favorite musician.
I don't confuse that with him being the best ever.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Man, Zodiac is such a great movie that didn't get the recognition is deserved. He was tremendous in that.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Good thing they went out and signed Rodman or that story would've never happened. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. The "Cornetto Trilogy" is awesome. Pegg/Frost/Wright are movie geeks and incorporate so many movie cliches, but use them at just the right moment. In order of greatness 1) Hot Fuzz, 2) Shaun of the Dead and 3)The World's End, which I just saw.

Also, I don't know if your downvotes are for not seeing Hot Fuzz, or if there are just haters.

    ReplyDelete
  57. No they don't pay XD

There are some hoops to jump through with Posts, but it's totally worth it because they have an EDITOR!!!

As of this moment there are no comments on the site

The writers all seem very nice and have written some really good pieces, I'm hoping to become a bigger member of their team in time--but Life is crazy at the moment so I'm happy as a collaborator on group projects and hopefully will make my solo debut in October/November.

The site is looking good, and 'm happy they want me to be a part of it

    ReplyDelete
  58. Agree with the MJ comeback, woulda said Lance Armstrong before it was established he's a psychopath.

As far as wrestling, the only correct answer is Ric Flairs return to Nitro in Charlotte. I still get goosebumps watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Also, I'm glad you brought back QOTD. Good thread for us to bullshit in

    ReplyDelete
  60. The Expendable 2

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yea, crazy ass RDJ is like urban legend to me. Ive read all the stories, but is almost incomprehensible to me at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I sent out a feeler to PtbN and they did not want any wrestling stuff from me but did want me to send in some samples for SNL and sports.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Im 29 and LOVE meatloaf. Love both bat outta hells. Im in the extreme minority though of people in my age demographic who enjoy the loaf.

    ReplyDelete
  64. IT'S MOORS!! SAY MOORS!!!

    (I also wanted to play).

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'd downvote myself for not seeing Hot Fuzz. Shaun of The Dead is fantastic, too - it's one of those movies that exist as a parody and a great interpretation of a genre.

    ReplyDelete
  66. While the rest of the world was drinking New coke, who did a bunch of coke back in the day?
    Robert Downey, Jr.

See, I just made joke. Now he's a punchline. Can we stop jerking off about him now?

    ReplyDelete
  67. How am I "jerking off" about him? Some guy who claims to be a movie reviewer said his pre iron man career consisted of "a few roles here and there." That's so embarrassingly wrong if anyone says it, but when a "film critic" says that Theres nothing wrong with pointing out rdj's brilliant career, and how incorrect that statement is.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Glad you are bringing this back.

I like Caliber but I think he is clearly desperate to make a name for himself. Maybe writing is all that he has but is constant need to say this was a "huge draw" was actually laughable. Sure, it comments but page counts are what constitutes a draw here and when you use blogger to post, you can see the page hits a post gets and QoTD is not that that big.

Scott is the draw here and that is about it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. He makes it pretty clear, doesn't he? :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomerySeptember 7, 2013 at 12:02 PM

As someone born in 1986, I knew him as "Extremely Talented But Can't Shake The Drug Habit" RDJ from KKBB, Chaplin, Air America, McKellen's Richard III, and Wonder Boys among others. I was familiar and a fan of his enough to go "Wow, what a perfect fit" when he was cast as Tony Stark. Hey, some of us 80ers do know our shit about movies.

    ReplyDelete
  71. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomerySeptember 7, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Since 2008, no one's films have made more at the box office than Downey Jr, and 8 of his 9 films beginning with Iron Man have grossed over $100m domestically. You can't even discount "well, Marvel films" because the MCU gained momentum based off his performance in "Iron Man" enough to where he was #1 billed for "Avengers" (and basically turned Iron Man into an A-tier superhero); in essence, people pay to see HIM as Iron Man. Over the last six years, the numbers say he IS the biggest movie star.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It's not that simple. First, he's part of an ensemble for Avengers. It's not a star vehicle. And he can't just walk into a studio and do whatever he wants. Clooney, Pitt, Cruise and Denzel are all bigger movie stars than him. If any of those guys express interest in a role that RDJ is up for, tough luck Bob.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jordan is a scumbag too.

    ReplyDelete
  74. There is NO story that could come about about Jordan that would surprise me. Something like "he ordered 4 people to be killed so he could bang there wives" wouldnt make me blink.

The story about him trying to win that VJs virginity in a dice came says it all. Hes still my favorite athlete tho.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It seems like im in the minority of those who like Caliber. Why was he disliked? I heard about him stealing a Cracked article but thats not a huge discretion.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Waters, you reppin' New England, bro?

    ReplyDelete
  77. It goes a little deeper than that actually. Dougie was kinda trolling him, not only on this site but on his own site as well. And Caliber wasn't asking for a lifetime ban on Dougie, just 24 hours. Then Scott took the email Caliber sent and sent it to Dougie which, to be honest, is a bit of a dick move. Dougie then took the email and posted it on another message board to laugh about it.

And while I think Scott's the only major contributor or "big draw", Calibers stuff does pretty well here. Caliber just felt he never got any sort of thank you or even tiny recognition from Scott. I would have never known Caliber made that header up there had he not told me.

I just think it was a bunch of those factors with the shared email being the final straw.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Plagarising someone's work is a major discretion. It's the worst thing you can do.

Either he plagiarized it, which is bad, or he just ripped them off and did his own, which is lazy.

I told him several times that he shouldn't just do list based stuff if he wants to make a name for himself. Why do stuff that Cracked, Bleacher Report and Buzzfeed already crank out? Find your own voice.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I was not aware of that. Still, I think he overreacted with deleting posts and Dougie trolling him. Caliber's quest for the Internet to be filled with rainbows and sunshine is noble, but it's not reality and he has to accept that stuff like that happens when you post in a public setting.

    ReplyDelete
  80. What message board did Dougie post it on? How did I miss all this???

    ReplyDelete
  81. I didn't know you were. I'm from Mass

    ReplyDelete
  82. You know Dougie has been trolling this site for years and running back to Scotsman's board like he's some sort of internet hero. It's pretty pathetic, actually, but whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think it's nopants or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No way. None of those guys are moving the needle like Downey Jr. Everything he's doing is blowing up the box office and getting rave reviews from critics. Denzel just put out that dog shit train movie, and although a lot of clooneys recent stuff is really really really good (much better than iron man obviously) its not doing the giant numbers. And world war z was fucking flop for Pitt. Meanwhile RDJ is crushing every role he's getting and probably the #1 box office draw in the world

    ReplyDelete
  85. Oh scotsmans board...yeah I won't even waste my time seeking that out then.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oh, I agree there was a bit of an overreaction on Calibers part with the deleting posts and such. The best way to deal with a troll is to just ignore it, he basically fed Dougie. I will say though, this is the first time Caliber did something like that (post deleting, asking for a ban) and people have said some shitty things about/to him on this blog at times. But yeah, you do have to learn how to ignore that stuff. Imagine if Scott had quit the first time he was trolled by Hyatte?

    ReplyDelete
  87. World War Z was in no way a fucking flop for Pitt. It became his highest grossing film of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well I'm going to do this as...diplomatically as possible.

    First
of all, lets keep in mind we're all wrestling fans, on a wrestling
blog, talking about wrestling, by and large we're probably odd folks,
not all of us, but I'd venture most of us are, at the least, a little
    idiosyncratic.

To his credit, Caliber appears to be very hard headed. In his head, he's 100 percent right about everything, takes his writing, his views, and his opinions seriously as all get out, and consistently turns out written material without fail, regardless of his opinions on most things being wrong, they are his opinions, and at the least he sparked discussion through controversy.

You're more likely to yell at someone you disagree with, then you are to compliment them for sharing a similar opinion. So as a rabble rouser, I can appreciate Mr. Caliber's dedication.

For us creative types, being consistent is probably one of the hardest things to do when it comes to writing. Thus, personally, I was a bit jealous of ole' Caliber for being able to turn out material, reviews, posts, and a fucking book. Even if you disliked his writing, or liked his writing, or hated or agreed with his opinions, the fact of the matter was, well, they were here, they were clear, and we had to get used to it because he wasn't going away.

I think what happened here is that the hate turned into a sort of begrudged affection. He may be a jerk, and completely wrong, and an asshole, but he's our Jerky, completely wrong, Asshole, damn it.

I'd also like to point out that when you first start out writing - and I've been making a mostly serious go at this whole 'creative' thing for about a decade now, you don't know what's right and what's wrong, and you tend to imitate what you know and think is popular.

I'm sure the first guy to use star ratings for a review was a genius, and the second guy to do it was called a copycat. So I give Mr. Caliber a pass on the whole plagiarizing cracked thing, because those articles are so popular and so general that even attempting a similar list would result in similar results, I would guess.

Really my only beef with the guy is that I thought he was wrong about pretty much everything, but opinions are like assholes, and all that.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jesus Christ Jobber, I don't know what RDJ did to earn your complete and total devotion, but the man WAS a punchline in the late 90s. He got lampooned multiple times on SNL and Simpsons. If that isn't being a punchline I don't know what is.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I found the forum, just can't find the thread. Expletive.

    ReplyDelete
  91. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1VvcSRP934

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think he just has whatever hyper competitive switch players like Ty Cobb or James Harrison or Kobe Bryant have switched on. I WILL BE THE BEST. THE WORLD IS AGAINST ME. BRING IT ON MOTHER FUCKERS. or something.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Eh, I think in between one of his bans and name changes (he's had a quite a few around these parts, you know), someone had forwarded me some links. I deleted those ages ago. It's obvious by the news that he posted Caliber's e-mail from Scott, that this is still "his thing". I'm surprised Scott would do that and I'm not going to assume that's the whole story, because I've had tons of e-mail interaction with Scott and he's never done that.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Its too bad because I liked Caliber while I detest dougie for the most part

    ReplyDelete
  95. I know we knock the guy a lot, but I'm going with Cena at the '08 Rumble, just because there wasn't a single one of us that saw that coming.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Oh, and throw me into the "Liked Caliber" camp. I genuinely looked forward to his reviews and his recap of the HHH/Steiner feud (it was on his site but he posted it here as well I think) was one of the funniest wrestling-related things I've ever read.

And if that stuff down below about why he left is true (the email about Dougie), then I can understand him being upset.

    ReplyDelete
  97. What does the best of the non-Scott stuff? I would've bet money it was Caliber's stuff, or Thomas Hall since he does Smackdown/NXT recaps.

    ReplyDelete
  98. You have to sign up to the board to see the forum. Once you sign up, go to ENTERTAINMENT then go to the thread Smarky Smarks Say Things. It's a whole thread basically dedicated to us and what we say on here. It's 177 pages!

    ReplyDelete
  99. "A few roles here and there"
He was established as an all time great actor before he played Tony Stark. I listed off a ton of his fantastic performances below, and I didn't even count shit like kiss kiss bang bang which he made after he supposedly got sober. I think his performance as Tony Stark is what makes those movies the best super hero films. The only bad part of those films is when he puts on the stupid suit and fights robots. I understand that the simpsons made some whacky drug joke about him but a guy who claims he understands film enough to write about saying that RDJ's career consisted of a "few roles here and there" is kind of retarded and I was just pointing that out.

    ReplyDelete
  100. That puts the He's Ambitiously Stupid thread to shame

    ReplyDelete
  101. It's called No Pants Provided. It even has a thread dedicated to us on the blog, what we say and making fun of it. It's 177 pages long! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  102. Wow, I've seen a few people make that "he takes himself too seriously" comment, and I couldn't disagree more. I always found the guy to be pretty self-aware (and fairly self deprecating). Although, to be fair, I didn't read everything he posted, so maybe I missed that stuff.

The Iron Man and Holmes films were star vehicles and grossed huge on his appeal. He can definitely get anything he wants because he's as sure as it gets at the BO (Cruise and Denzel had underperforming films in this year alone). But you're Dougie, I'm sure you're used to being wrong on the BoD often at this point. =)

    ReplyDelete
  104. If he had said biggest draw, I may have agreed. But he didn't. He said star. Which is different. You're completely wrong. Hanks is also bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I know you are joking, but I don't consider that a comeback album because, he immediately flopped the next album

    14 shots to the dome.

The real LL comeback album in my opinion was "Mr. Smith". That album was a monster and resolidified him as a player for a new generation of rap fans for about a good 6 years afterwards.

    ReplyDelete
  106. A few roles here and there in the context of growing up as a child in the 90s. No shit RDJ was great in a lot of movies, bro. Bowfinger, for example, Back to School, all films you mentioned before. I'm saying, as a KID, growing up, you only knew of Downey as "The drug guy" at that time. Older olks knew his roles in Back to School and a bunch of other things, I'm SURE, but that wasn't me, AT THE TIME.

Essentially you're docking me for saying I wasn't a movie critic when I was 10 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Well I think he took his opinions seriously, but could kid the fact other people thought them ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Okay I couldn't help myself. I went and looked. OMG thats the most pathetic thing i've ever seen. Dougie=Osseric LOLOLOLOLOL and seriously I need to take a shower after looking at that thread just to wash the douche off

    ReplyDelete
  109. Wait, but you're a movie critic now and have context and perspective, yet you still typed that. It'd be ok if you at 10 wrote the article.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Now you see why Caliber quit.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I found it too. That Caliber e-mail is something.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Can you copy/paste the e-mail? And Dougie is a child...a 37 year-old child.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I think dougies obsession with caliber, and other people that post here is fucking creepy

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well I said "for kids born in the 80s" which means ya know, how I felt growing up.

    Greetings, Scotts Tots.

    >

    > I have a small favor to ask. Will you ban Dougie for 24 hours? The
guy is a total prick, and is despised by everyone. Today he was trying
to stir up shit in the Man Movie thread, but I wouldn't let him. So then
he goes over to my website and starts spamming my comments section as
Jesse Baker, which was fucking annoying because when a new comment comes
in, in goes to my email, which then makes my phone alert me. So, I'm
trying to work and my phone keeps going off, and I have to drop what I'm
doing, and then read witty comments such as "have you ever had sex?".
The IPs matched, so I know it was him.

    >

    > If you don't want to ban him for 24 hours, I understand. Will you
then at least tell him he gets one warning, and that's it? Much
appreciated. Sorry to bother you with such trivial shit.

  116. You're right, I retract my statement. I completely missread your post. Apologies.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I agree. Did Dougie say something about not liking Miz?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Oh, PLEASE tell me there was something about me.

    ReplyDelete
  119. lol yup, i accidentally started from the first page before I went to the end and I saw some of that shit

    ReplyDelete
  120. And that's why Scott shared the email I assume. That bit about it being a warning

    ReplyDelete
  121. I am indeed. South Coast represent!

    ReplyDelete
  122. I had to filter though what I would consider the seedy part of the internet to get that. I mean its one thing to be smarky and critque wrestling. Its another to be smarky about people posting on a wrestling blog...holy shit I had no idea this trash was out there

    ReplyDelete
  123. That's my guess. Dougie has been banned before under this user name. I'm thinking, in hindsight, Scott regrets sending Dougie that e-mail; but I don't want to speak for Scott. Either way, it's fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Dude this thread is unbelievable. Its just people trashing this blog, most of whom either post here as trolls or were banned from here. You've got to check this shit out its fucking hysterical

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'm never referring to him as Dougie again. From now on, he's going by Assirus.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I'm basically against banning anyone outside of spammers but I can see why CW would be a little creeped out by dougies obsession with him. That got kind of weird there. Just post after post about him.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I suggested he talk to Scott instead of deleting e-mails. I guess I gave him bad advice, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Just got an email from Scott asking me to stop antagonizing caliber. Lulz.
thanks from a dougie or Osiris post over there lol, jesus he is obsessed with cw

    ReplyDelete
  129. How do I find it!? I'm exited!

    ReplyDelete
  130. man, I'm worried about if I ever have to leave the blog--so many flame outs.

Is it that the ROH reviewers are exempt, or I'm gonna pay for me, Curry, and Murphy?

TUNE INTO NITRO TO FIND OUT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  131. you've got to nopantprovided and sign up for the stupid site, then go to entertainment and open the "dumb things smarks say" thread...I'm reading me getting trashed by buckdiddy and some other trolls about saying there aren't hardcore female fans of things, this thread is fucking epic

    ReplyDelete
  132. No one pays attention to the ROH reviewers. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Fair enough. I'll end this by saying if you love movies check out some of his old shit. He's brilliant man.

    ReplyDelete
  134. To be fair, no one tuned into Nitro towards the end either

    ReplyDelete
  135. What's funny is they were still drawing ratins similar to what Raw draws now.

    ReplyDelete
  136. "Also, If Caliber is going to quit gigs because He can't deal with trolls, he probably shouldn't write for the internet. His skin is far to thin for him to take it."

I don't know, Caliber took a LOT of shit from a lot of people here. I've never posted anything of note on the internet so I can't speak from personal experience, but what I've seen is that most people who take that amount of abuse eventually do get tired of it and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Dude we almost need a thread dedicated to this thread at npp. Its unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  138. As bad as Dennis Rodman, North Korea's ambassador to the USA

    ReplyDelete
  139. Which to me just means that no one is watching Raw either...

    ReplyDelete
  140. Wrestling:
HBK vs. Orton/Jericho/Christian Survivor Series 2003.

-THE MATCH that made me a HBK fan 4 life. For about 15 minutes, I believed again like I was 8.

HBK is the comeback wrestler of all time, period. Kayfabe/non-kayfabe

    Movies:
Not a big movie guy (as said before) but Imma go with general concensus and say RDJ, for reason already stated.

    Music:
    3-6 Mafia (specifically Juicy J)

-3-6 was DOA after firing everybody/most of the original lineup quitting in 2005. Then they won the Academy Award for best song in a movie, and Juicy J signed to aylor Gang as an artist and put out my favorite mixtapes of 2010/2011 "RubbeBand Biz 2 and Blue Dream and Lean" Continued to the "trippy movement" that WIz Khalifa (GARBAGE ASS) started and constantly burning up the charts.

    Misc comeback:
(someone is talking shit, you pick up your phone and say)
"Gimme a sec, your bitch is texting me what I want for dinner"

Now onto the elephant in the room.

You can't claim to be self-aware and in on the joke when you run off the board because you get trolled. Its some people's joy in life to make people miserable.

Usually the ones who exude the most confidence are the ones who crack because they are riddled with security issues.

Its a classic example of someone overreaching and thinking that they have more worth than actually do.

I asked Scott months ago, why do you keep him around? He said he makes him money with the hits he brings. Me being one to never knock another man's hustle, let it go from then on, but I brought up the fact that he will split once he feels he has enough clout to successfully run his own blog.

He kept talking about the traffic he brought to the blog and I called him out. I asked take your traffic to your blog and see the traffic you get, as an experiment. Because I believed that anyone could be you and do what you did. I kept calling it out because that's what I do.

Dougie just sealed the deal. Scott can do what he wants. His blog, his rules. Obviously Caliber didn't have enough juice like he thought he did and took his ball and went back to his blog. Maybe he will have amassed the traffic the BoD gets, I doubt it, but I will never know. He is a cog in the machine. Not even a big one and easily replaceable as you can see Meekin filling in just as seamlessly. Thank You Meekin, I look forward to your QOTD.

He had his detractors. He had his fans. Nobody sparked a more divisive opinion.

Personally, he sounded like Maddox and after reading that type of style for ten years, to see it again, in a lesser form, didn't jive with me. MODO.

So in summation, if you are a fan, you can no doubt follow him. Some have already done so. You can tell by their absence. I'm one who pays attention to the people who come and go since Im one of ones who have been here the longest. (and have nothing to do until January) the BoD will continue on as it has always has. From Charlie, MRoberts, Michael (what happened to the old Impact guy?) Kyle Fitta, Elvy, and now Caliber... twice I may add, the flameouts and meltdowns will continue.

We will laugh, talk about it for a few days and carry on.

My money on the next meltdown is Cucch.
    I got 5 on it!

  141. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 1:50 PM

Rodman didn't get his own father killed thanks to his gambling. Or maybe he did, who knows...

    ReplyDelete
  142. I forget who sent me links a long while back, but I can't be bothered. Who cares, really. Assirus proved he's a man-child and Buckdiddy is another jerk off...I love how when they've been called trolls, they get all incensed, yet that's exactly what they're doing. Irony can be so ironic.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Holy shit--That happened!?

Rodman is just a dumb ass -_-

    ReplyDelete
  144. That's going on Scotsman's forum.

    ReplyDelete
  145. my money is on Cuuch for the next flameout

    ReplyDelete
  146. I don't know that one...

    ReplyDelete
  147. Its so pathetic I almost feel embarrassed reading it. We are getting criticized for discussing the PWI 500 on a wrestling blog. How dare we. And if you want a good laugh check out buckdiddys blog, its horrific

    ReplyDelete
  148. Man, Cucch already had his meltdown, but like George Costanza, he came back to work like nothing happened. That was funny.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Is there anything about me?

    :D

    ReplyDelete
  150. They love riding your dick on that thread dude, its hysterical

    ReplyDelete
  151. Your retarded and brag too much about working for the coast guard LOL

    ReplyDelete
  152. lol, that dude has a blog? Oy vey.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Okay, reading the fun stuff below... who's more batshit insane in the membrane?

    Dougie
    Buck
    Jesse
    (Other?)

    ReplyDelete
  154. As far as page hits, the QoTD and Daily Update are about the same.

My Shoot reviews get the most hits and my TNA Weekly PPV's reviews get the least in most weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  155. E. All of the above.

    ReplyDelete
  156. So we're all on that level?

    (Grabs pistol...)

    ReplyDelete
  157. To be fair, you DO deserve shit for that, My dearest friend is a girls who throws herself fill tilt into multiple fandoms.

The difference is I'll tell you you're an ignorant, misogynistic shit head to your face--and then be over it rather then go to some forum that may as well be called "My penis is way to small.com"

    ReplyDelete
  158. Is it possible they are all the same person?

    ReplyDelete
  159. I've heard about that conspiracy theory.

Nope. No way. I just can't believe it. It wasn't like Jordan was broke in 93, he still had a shitload of money. We're going to believe that these 'bad people' didn't *threaten* to kill his father if he didn't pay up? That they just DID IT?!? Or that Jordan simply blew off the threat?

    Nope. Didn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  160. For the record I've seen: Due Date, Tropic Thunder, Gothika, Wonder Boys, Bow Finger, U.S Marshals, Natural Born Killers, Back to School, and Weird Science, plus Iron Man 1,2,3, Avengers, and Sherlock (the first).

    ReplyDelete
  161. The new Raw Rant (Andy) with the post-game round up (Mike Mears) is actually pretty good stuff. Andy kind of sounds like Scott a bit, but Mike's stuff is pretty good and a different voice (i.e. not 100% smarkish).

    ReplyDelete
  162. I'd like to point out this RDJ argument has given me much hope for the Internet and it's ability to debate and come to an understanding. Jobber and Flair4daGold both get cookies.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Damn, that would be straitjacket and padded room levels of insane. On a "sane" day

    ReplyDelete
  164. Well, Assirus already pretended to be Jesse on CW's blog, so who knows....

    ReplyDelete
  165. There's a Buffy The Vampire Slayer forum somewhere on the internet with like, 16000 posts, all made by ONE guy. It was in a cracked article somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  166. As much as I consider B. Simmons full of BS... his Jordan's break theory isn't completely implausible.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM

It's never been outright proven, but it's the generally accepted theory. It's also been rumored that his "retirement" was really a suspension for gambling-related issues.

At any rate, he put tons of southeast Asian kids to work, so he's got that to be proud of.

    ReplyDelete
  168. There's a Roy Orbison fan somewhere who writes fantasies about wrapping him in clingfilm.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Just because he had the money doesn't mean he intended to pay.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Damnit, I've been found out.

... kidding. Charmed might have gotten that from me a decade ago...

    ... kidding again.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Yeah but my argument gains so much more traction when these zeros criticize it.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Dude trust me, watch less than zero, chaplin, black and white, and zodiac when you get a chance. He's amazing in those films.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Ok I have to say I can't stop laughing at them calling this place rspwfat...lol and heres a great post from there:

I literally just read that Badd Blood review before coming here.
Absolutely fucking shocking. Giving Nash/HHH ****1/4?! Calling it a
great B show?! I remember that PPV well, as I was obsessed back in those
days, and it was fucking awful. The absolute drizzling shits, as all of
the RAW only PPVs were in that era.

I think Keith populates rspwfat with as many mongs as possible in order to make him seem even more exalted by comparison.

This guy. That useless chick. "Thomas" Hall. Brian Bayless, whoever the fuck he is. Ryan T Murphy writes sometimes too right?

Scott Keith and The Island of Misfit Autist Cunts.

EDIT: I omitted one of the "d"s in "Badd"

    ReplyDelete
  174. this guy gets it bro!

    ReplyDelete
  175. Right? That thread is pretty insane! Constantly talking about what we post on here and how stupid we are. When Caliber told me about said thread I thought it might be three pages of Dougie bitching. But 177 pages, really? I'm sure soon enough this discussion will be talked about over there.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Now I'm just a dumb smark but what's a Autist? And TPrincess is fucking great, and so isn't Tommy Hall and Brian Bayless. They actually write great reviews and TPrincess always has some great original thoughts in her raw open threads, but I guess that really pales in comparison to when you can call someone a Autist on a shitty message board.

    ReplyDelete
  177. I believe there is, something you posted on the blog was stupid or something. That's how all the critique goes there.

    ReplyDelete
  178. You're spending way more time on this than it deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  179. As for my answers:

Sports: '04 Red Sox from 3-0 down against Yankees (99.5% of that being my hatred of the Yankees)
06-07 Saints, from 3-13 and Katrina the year before to one bad decision from not getting blown out in the NFC Championship game. Along with the Superdome return on Monday Night (Saints 23, Morten Anderson 3, Michael Vick and the other 51 Falcons 0) and Payton/Brees making life fun for Saints fans.

Non-Sports: Not really sure on this one, I'm honestly sub-par when it comes to pop culture.

Insult/Response: "Fuck You." Classic. Easy. Blunt.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Okay I'm done, but you've got to realize I never knew about this until an two hours ago. Lol it was just too much stupidity to quietly process

    ReplyDelete
  181. Eh, I can't blame him. When Caliber told me about the thread I went through it. It's just funny to read these idiotic comments and they're "bashing" of the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 2:21 PM

The whole thing is completely pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  183. LMAO...

omg, they are shitting on Caliber.

    I can not stop.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Where was this written?

    ReplyDelete
  185. Just got back from the thread...Oh--My--God

    WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!

I am disappointed though, I was hoping for more hate against me

    ReplyDelete
  186. If you can give me a page number I'll be so, so very happy--it's so much shit to sift through

    ReplyDelete
  187. I feel REALLY stupid now for not getting that!

    ReplyDelete
  188. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 2:26 PM

I didn't waste my time combing through all that crap to see if there's anything about me (not that I give a fuck), but I genuinely feel like I've lost brain cells just by going over there.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Exactly why I'm staying away. I value my brain cells too much.

    ReplyDelete
  190. I think he wanted Autistic? Maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  191. Amsterdam_Adam_CurrySeptember 7, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Smart move. I'm sitting here thinking of all the things I could have done with that 10 minutes I just wasted.

    ReplyDelete
  192. scrolled through the last ten pages.

    No Fuj :(

    ReplyDelete
  193. The '04 Red Sox comeback is hands down the best comeback in sports history. Not only was there 80+ years of frustration built up, the sale of Babe Ruth, the '86 Mets loss, the '03 choke job vs. the Yanks, etc, etc and the fact that it had never been done...ever. Yeah, that was too sweeeeeeeet.
