DB

Scott:
Been following the blog and here's a simple one: even if he isn't going to get an Austin push, Bryan is still being positioned just outside the main event.  Why does everyone go fatalistic and assume he won't get another call?  People keep buying merch and WWE has shown they will rotate guys like him (Jericho, Edge etc.) in and out of cherry spots.  Bret got the plug pulled quick at IX and bounced back.  Shawn was hit or miss until DX with a monster push and wasn't a bona fide draw until late in his career.  Part of the fun is the ride.  WWE might cherish size, but they also cherish loyalty.  Cream rise.  DB ain't done yet and has shown able to overcome past burials and keep rising.  Time might be on his side.

My two cents.

You might say we should don't stop believing?  Hold on to that feeling?

  1. I do think he is in this kind of spot, along with Punk, Sheamus, and Del Rio. The Edge kind of spot where they get rotated to the top for a bit to give a break from Cena, and then get rotated back away.

  2. HBK was never a draw.

This blog has offically been re-christened the Blog O'Bryan....or The BoB, if you will. From here on out, every topic will revolve around Daniel Bryan and his fantasy booking.

Keep it up, and I'm going to end up hating the guy.

  5. Wow, if there was ever a way to turn me against Bryan's successes, it's going to be this. Maybe this is all Scott's master plan.

    Where's Baker?

  6. When did they pull the plug on Bret? He won the KotR at the next ppv after WM IX.

And the Shawn stuff is crazy...they put him over at WM in the main event for the WWF title. And he never left the main even scene for 2 full years.

Bryan barely got 2 full months. Its over guys. Bryan is never going to be the Guy. Time to move on.

  7. Punk is a tippy-top guy. He's well above Sheamus and del Rio in the pecking order.

    ReplyDelete
  8. WrestleManias 25 & 26 would like a word...Shawn vs. UT was the draw to both of those shows.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think you mean BO-lieving, Scott.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Mania 26 didn't do we'll at all, and that was built almost entirely around Shawn

    ReplyDelete
  11. Bryan is the poochie of the BoD

    ReplyDelete
  12. At this point I really want Hogan to come back and give Jin the big boot and leg drop brother.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I liken him to Foley and Punk. Guys they have confidence in for short periods in the main event, but never destined to be "the guy."

    ReplyDelete
  14. You can't really just "yeah trump, Vince..." I mean, that's what sold that show. HBK made it a great match for sure, but Orton or Edge could have been in HBKs spot against Cena and butyrate is probably exactly the same.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Cena and Shawn got alot of build for that WM. They had that whole tag team thing going. You can blame for for 26s failure like you did above, then not give him any credit for 23.

  16. I BOlieve I forgot to apply deodorant today.

  17. Punk's way above Sheamus and ADR in the pecking order

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lol. Don't think I didn't see Hornswaggle in there

    ReplyDelete
  19. Which Mania-- 23 or 26-- would you honestly say was sold more on HBK?

    ReplyDelete
  20. 26. I'm just saying you can't scapegoat him for 26 and then turn around and say he wasn't a part of the 23 buyrate. It's like 14...the buy was for Austin and Tysons but HBK deserves some credit for it also

    ReplyDelete
  21. A wise man will always find the Hornswoggle in the situation.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I just think that overall HBK gets treated as much more of a megastar by WWE revisionist history than he ever actually was. He was the guy who worked with the guy who drew money, as Jericho noted about his own career. When Shawn was booked as THE reason to watch (Mania 12, his face title run, Mania 26 when his career was on the line) he didn't draw.

    ReplyDelete
  23. He's a strange case. His "legend" status has been so ingratiate into our psyche by the wwe machine it's hard to view his career ovjectively. I give him a small pass, along with Bret because the product was such a mess and in such transition during their runs. He was never a huge draw when he came back but fans loved him. He wasn't a draw though like the major historical players though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Totally. Listen, I love HBK--- thought his 2000s run was great and I never got sick of him. But yeah, just based on his positioning in the company as Vince and HHH's bestie, his status gets inflated quite a bit.

  26. Bret won KotR and wasn't back in the title hunt until he and Luger tied the Rumble. He wasn't even vying for the IC title. He pretty much feuded with Lawler until the Owen storyline kicked in.

I just got a case of deja vu.

The last time I heard Don't Stop Believin', Daniel Bryan's push was sitting in a diner with its son and wife. As soon as his daughter came in and a guy with a member's only jacket walked out of the bathroom, it went straight to black.

So, what do YOU think happened to Daniel Bryan's push?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Um. Look, Austin Austin Austin and all, but DX was just as much a part of kickstarting the Attitude Era, and with Bret gone there was NOBODY else Austin could have gone over at WM 14 that would have mattered (Rock wasn't there yet). WM23, Trump and Vince are a big part, sure, but ultimately the main even of the show was HBK/Cena... and while Trump brought in some non-wrestling fans, I guess, the wrestling fans were a lot more worried about the Main. He also carried 25 and 26, and while you can argue that 26 did disappointing numbers... it was pretty much a two-match show, and they were both rematches; that's on WWE, not on Shawn.

Obviously, he's not a Hogan/Austin/Rock draw, but I'd still rank him above a HHH/Bret/Eddie/Punk draw. He's about half a tier below Cena, probably.

  30. Only on the internet can a wrestler who was in a comedy tag team a year ago be 'buried' after headlining four shows in a row, and be involved in a high card tag team feud.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nope. Sheamus, when he comes back, is taking Punk's spot.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Steve Austin was a once in a generation talent who made the business bigger. Daniel Bryan is not that guy.

  39. So let's try and name other songs that symbolize how we feel about Daniel Bryan. I'm gonna start with "What a Man" by Salt n Pepa...

  41. So THAT'S what that is.

  42. Bryan's a Jericho, or an Edge. That's not a bad place to be.
One day when the right collection of injuries happens, he will probably get a more substantial run with the belt.
For now, he had his run with the franchise guys, and now he's been cycled out. He'll get cycled back in.

  43. I always wonder about the Trump thing. Did people who don't watch wrestling or otherwise wouldn't have paid for the show really shell out $50 to see a match with Umaga and Bobby Lashley just b/c Donald Trump was at ringside?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yea, it's weird. I can't really fathom it either. IIRC, Meltzer or Keller "reported" the 23 buyrate went over projection and was an outlier (adjusted for it being WM of course) for that year that you almost have no choice but to give Trump credit for the increase in buys. Sounds insane, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Same here. I just can't see someone who doesn't normally watch wrestling or pay for ppv's all of a sudden going, "hey, Donald Trump is gonna be out there for 20 minutes. Take my $50."

    ReplyDelete
  46. The big difference is that Shawn was a jerk and was prepared to backstab and walk over people to get the top, whereas Bryan seems like a nice laid back guy. In some ways Bryan is his own worst enemy in that respect because it's not just about being given chances, you need to have a killer instinct in order to stay at the top.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Like for Platoon reference; one of the best films ever.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Totally agree, even if HBK didn't main event I believe he was one of the big reasons for all those WM's successes as Shawn always had the best feuds building up to the event plus HBK's whole gimmick was that you can expect at least one **** match if he's on the card.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yeah, I never brought the whole Trump theory either. Tyson and Mr T being a major part of their respective WM's successes I can buy, but Trump? No buys.
