The Network Thingie

So yeah, that happened.  I know you marks might be taken in by the glitz and witty sketches of the presentation, but the REAL money is on the whole thing being a clever misdirection to distract people from the treatment of Daniel Bryan.

So anyway, although technically not available in Canada at launch, neither is Hulu and we all know what I watch RAW and NXT on, so that shouldn't be an issue.  If they're equally crabby about payment options like Hulu is, that might be more of a problem, but worst case I can get someone to make me an account and I'll reimburse them.  The bigger issue for me is that this massive influx of everything I ever wanted in a streaming WWE video library for a reasonable price means that I'll have little incentive to actually continue watching the shitty current product when I can just go into survival mode and review my brains out by bingeing on EVERY FUCKING PPV AND TV SHOW EVER BROADCAST first.  Like, holy shit, I can literally just go and watch Superbrawl IV without having to dig up my third-generation VHS-to-DVD dub, or Great American Bash 89, or whatever I want.  Especially Legends House.

I may seriously have to quit my job and live in my basement with a beer fridge and my iPad to fully deal with the situation.  Well played, WWE.  Well played.

Comments

  1. It would be awesome if you can make your own playlists. Imagine being able to grab all the major nWo moments and matches and put them in a playlist and watch them chronologically.

    ReplyDelete
  2. My only question is can we expect a price increase after the first 6 months? I have a feeling they'll get people on it for the first 6 months at $9.99/month and then it'll suddenly be doubled or something.

    ReplyDelete
  3. "Like, holy shit, I can literally just go and watch Superbrawl IV without having to dig up my third-generation VHS-to-DVD dub, or Great American Bash 89, or whatever I want."
You can do this now. It's called YouTube. And it's free.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I think it will be $9.99/month as long as you committ in 6 month chunks. It's the month-to-month that is probably going to be $12.99/month.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Normally, I would say, "Duh," but they are giving away the cow for free with this launch. You know their goal is to eventually raise the price but I see this Network going over like a fart in church.
Kudos to the WWE for the sell job. 6 months at 9.99 is WrestleMania anyway. But if you aren't interested in the other PPVs, there is very little to sell here. I don't see too many casual fans signing up for this.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Would I be able to get the Network on my laptop?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I hope beardmoney signs up for all the hillbilly Jim he can handle.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I wondered the same thing. It seems like another way to get money out of the diehards, which is a shrinking, not an expanding, audience for their product.

They have to be careful as well with any price increase because if they reach too far and lose subscribers then the whole thing will collapse. Netflix caught a TON of flack when they separated their DVD and streaming services years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "This is a great idea, Gorilla! And all it took was a previous terrible idea of putting this in a cable package failing completely!"
    "WILL YOU STOP?!"

    ReplyDelete
  10. You think every parent of a little John Cena fan isnt gonna jump all over paying 10 bucks a month for the PPVs instead of 55? I think this thing is a slam dunk. Die hards, casuals, this appeals to everyone, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Here's what I think they're thinking...
Most people are just buying WrestleMania these days. If we lure them in, we can get $120 from them every year, which is like buying 2 shows.
The problem (that I see) is that it HAS to be the diehards making up the 100,000 or so that buy any crap PPV. If even half of those go to the Network, the WWE is losing waaaaay more money on PPVs than they are making on the Network.
The math doesn't add up. And the WWE's track record on their own ventures (just pick one) has me thinking this ain't gonna work.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well, I've been told that it's not available in Australia until late 2014/2015. This is similar to being screwed over by Microsoft on the NFL on Xbox One screwjob.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just another step in the slow death of television through actual television channels.

    ReplyDelete
  14. As turned off as I am by the current product sometimes, Vince can have my $120/year. I usually only buy WM and Rumble anyway and that's $110 right there, so this is a no brainer. And it's worth the extra $10 for a crazy ridiculous library (and to not have to look for streams of the B-PPVs). If they up the price, though, might start reconsidering.

I think the pre and post shows for every Raw and SD are such a bad idea. No one is going to watch them and its just going to burn out everyone involved to add an extra hour of production to each show.

so, how would someone like me get the network?

i have a desktop that gets internet via dsl; there's no cable port anywhere near where i keep my machine while the phone jack is right there. i have no need for a laptop or tablet. i've heard of this roku box thing i could plug into my tv, but again, my internet is via dsl and not through my cable. i live in an apartment so i probably don't have the option of switching to fios.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I know me and my buddies havent bought a PPV in years, not even a WM. All of them are going to get the WWE network. I think WWE has a homerun on its hands, provided they dont jack the price up TOO much. You know the price will be raised, but if they keep it reasonable it could work.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So...I can watch every PPV...on my laptop...except pay for it.

    Am I missing something here?

    ReplyDelete
  18. its going to be available online

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agreed. I can't see a price of anything over $14.99/month. If they go $19.99/month I think that's probably too high for just one service such as this, especially regarding how poor their booking is for current PPVs.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The more people that buy the network, even for nostalgia... is what they want. They want to lure the "old" fans and the casuals. The ones that may not necessarily be watching. Bring them back, get them buying merchandise, watching the current shows, and attending live events. There isn't going to be a single wrestler that can draw the old fans/casual fans today and more potential revenue in 12-24 months like this network can.

    ReplyDelete
  29. get a router? I don't know man I'm done being your technician.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This now gives WWE's copyright protection scheme a very strong incentive to go after all the youtube content uploaders.

Pretty good chance a whole lot of youtube uploaders are going to be pretty upset in about 3 months.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Convenience, quality, and legality.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Some of those youtube matches are shitty quality.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hate to be a thread jack but this network announcement has taken over everything tonight.

Mae Young was taken off life support tonight :(

    ReplyDelete
  34. Getting us away from Bryan? Well played WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  35. As long as this thing has old squash matches I'm sold (I need to watch Kamala splash scrubs from the top rope)

    ReplyDelete
  36. They'll just move to Dailymotion. Pretty much nothing ever gets removed from that site.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh no....
    (I'm being serious here)

    ReplyDelete
  38. If you were with me, you would be on the phone with me for an hour.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Apparently, Hulk Hogan was at the conference, but wasn't part of the presentation. I think that's interesting, they should have gotten him back on board before this because he still has some name value.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That's very sad news, but the woman lived a good long life, and was taking serious bumps at an age when most people would be afraid to be slapped.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As long as they include the Gorilla/Bobby episodes of Prime Time Wrestling, they have my money.
I had TNA On Demand for about a year because 10 bucks every 3 months for every TNA PPV including the weekly PPVs was a damn good deal so I have no problem with a six month commitment that also happens to include live PPVs and the best wrestling library known to man.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Vince probably has a mandate that "wwe network" be mentioned 4 times a minute now during Raw and Smackdown.

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOST (a group of young writers crash land in Stamford, CT) #NixedWWENetworkShows

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm guessing he refused to put over the network. "That doesn't work for me brother."

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes on Prime Time and hopefully they manage Jesse Ventura's voice for commentary. It won't be the same without him calling matches.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And I am shockingly ok with this..

    ReplyDelete
  47. Also a full length version of the JBL and Cole show can be a new version of PrimeTime. Seriously, if you need a Primetime fix, watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. They kept his commentary intact on Classics On Demand (even for obscure WCW shows) so I don't expect them to remove it this time around.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Vince can brand it on my forehead at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Is it also every tv show though? Because those can be hard to find especially for wcw

    ReplyDelete
  51. Just get a router. Problem solved.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Would be kewl if someone had their own talk show or variety hour

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thing is, thanks to Youtube's tools for copyright owners, they don't even need to do take-downs if they don't want to. All WWE has to do is flag the matches as theirs under ContentID, and WWE can actually serve their own ads and bring in revenue from others' uploads. The copyright holders actually make money, the uploads stay, everyone wins.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is beyond fantastic. I can't wait to get it. I love wwe for doing this, I'll pay a bit more even if they ever up the price. Great news

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'll be sold if they start doing the Legends Roundtable's again. Seriously I fucking love those

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh, that's pretty cool. Good to hear that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is why RUDOS exists...

    ReplyDelete
  58. What's Bischoff doing?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm sold anyway, but yes, this.

    ReplyDelete
  60. R.I.P Mae Young. Thanks for the memories!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I saw during the presentation a LoW tab so I assume they have all the episodes on VOD at least.

    ReplyDelete
  62. OBJECTIVE NO. 1: Purchase WWE Network.

OBJECTIVE NO. 2: Keep less in-the-know friends who watch PPVs in the dark about objective No. 1.

PROJECTED EXPENSES: $120 yearly in WWE Network subscription. Booze/food/pot not considered, as all would have been purchased anyway.

PROJECTED INCOME: $15 each from three friends x 6 PPVs = $330 PLUS booze and pot considerations

PROJECTED NET: Yeah, I'm gonna buy WWE Network.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Someone help the dumb guy out for a second. Since I really don't want to watch the network on a computer, what's the best, easiest device to get to have it readily accessible on my TV?

    ReplyDelete
  64. She wws taken off life support and is fighting for her life

    ReplyDelete
  65. To hell with a six month plan, I'm ready to sign up for a year if they include all of the Legends Of Wrestling episodes!

    ReplyDelete
  66. See, I think they're a good idea because why not, but I doubt I'll watch them. I'd probably catch the post show of a particularly awesome Raw where I'm still pumped up about it, but the vast majority of Raws I doubt I'd watch a post show. And I can't really see watching the pre show either unless I toss it on in the background because nothing is on. They'll have to handle it differently than just "another two hours of Raw" to not burn everyone out though. Probably just quickie interviews they can film whenever, video packages to build up a match, and studio discussion about what happened on Raw. If it's those things, it shouldn't really add much to the actual production.

    ReplyDelete
  67. In the same vein as "Are You Serious?" please god YES.

    ReplyDelete
  68. PROJECTED RESULT: Beatdown resembling monster face turn for your friends when they uncover that they've been deceived.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well, I guess I don't really give a shit either way about what happens to Daniel Bryan at wrestlemania! Wwe just completely bought me off by putting this out. I'll pay for this channel as long as it exists. If this is really what they are promising its some what of a dream come true.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Roku is the easiest option but if you already have a hard drive tower and an HDTV and are not in the mood to spend $50 on a Roku then all you have to do is sync the tower to your TV with an HDMI cable and watch it that way.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, my concern is that giving the PPVS away for free to WWE Network subscribers will cannabilize their PPV business. I know the cable companies get their 50% split, but how many subscribers do they need to offset this loss of PPV revenue? That's my concern. I'm subscribing, but I'm just wondering how it will work out for them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thought so. I believe I can part with 50 bucks to make it convenient. Any word on it being an option for the PS4 or PS3?

    ReplyDelete
  73. The advertisements that come on MID-VIDEO have kept me far away from that site for good

    ReplyDelete
  74. It's available on both devices as well as the Xbox 360.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Maybe Playstation 3 or XBox 360? The used ones are pretty cheap (if you don't have one already) and Roku sounds a little confusing to me at the moment (but I might be singing a different tune in a year--who knows).

    ReplyDelete
  76. Your consultant check is in the mail.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can't get over the name. Roku? It sounds like some bullshit hipster noodles.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hopefully Wii U too? Doubt it though. That's what is set up in my living room. PS3 is downstairs in the man cave.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Bad news if you have an Xbox One, it won't be available on that device until fall at the earliest so people who have that system are getting screwed over by Microsoft yet again, it's like they openly want the PS4 to kick their ass at every possible opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  80. You mean it isn't? Then what the hell did I eat last night?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm still hoping they revive "Are you Serious" to a full half hour show, TONS of stuff still to make fun of in wrestling history.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow, I don't think I have every seen a single topic on this blog showing so much sheer joy in the comments thread.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  91. I wonder how the Hand is taking it....

    ReplyDelete
  92. Okay, something we haven't considered: Does this mean that we'd actually have uncut shows featuring He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I read that he'll be included with a disclaimer or something.

    ReplyDelete
  94. But I'm dumb AND lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  95. You must be mistaking "joy" with "rage" on that one although I'm apparently one of the few who is in favor of Bryan joining the Wyatts.

    ReplyDelete
  96. What would the Hand of the King care about Mae Young?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Perhaps it was a conflict of interest with his Rent A Center commitments....

    ReplyDelete
  98. Probably best way to handle it I guess. Always tough with Benoit as if they try to showcase him, they're slammed for promoting a killer/suicide or cashing in on the press of it all, as bad as ignoring him totally so guess disclaimer works.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 8, 2014 at 11:05 PM

well, yeah, i'd feel lazy, too, if i drank all that soda pop

  100. She has one more match in her, too bad Ziggler isnt cleared to go or Mae couldve gone over him on the way out....

    ReplyDelete
  101. I didnt even know she had a match with Ryback....

    ReplyDelete
  102. Nah, way too much of a hassle to drive to the arena only to discover that Closed Circuit TV hasn't been utilized for wrestling since 1989.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 8, 2014 at 11:08 PM

i have the low end dsl. i'll have to look into what other packages are available. since i already have the soon-to-be-dearly-departed 24/7, that's $8 or whatever i'm already paying per month that i can count towards an upgrade to a faster package

    ReplyDelete
  104. Their ventures on tape libraries have paid off quite nicely....

    ReplyDelete
  105. Guess I'd better unload my WCW VHS s quick.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Im sure somebody would fall for it....

    ReplyDelete
  107. They can tattoo "WWE Network" on *me* at this point for how much awesome STUFF there's going to be via this.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Yes!

Incidentally, I was just playing Punch Out on the 3DS earlier. Not sure what I enjoyed most, Soda Popinski's Ganon laugh, the blatant racial stereotypes, or the fact that the game actually has a fight that seems to exist solely as a fat joke. What a great game!

    ReplyDelete
  109. And that somebody probably lives in Georgia and has "Honey Boo Boo" as a nickname.

    ReplyDelete
  110. If they would take cues from the NFL as well as their own product from the 80s/90s, the pre- and post-shows could be awesome. For the pre-show, a mixture of hype videos, breakdowns of feuds and announced matches, sitdown interviews (like the HHH ones with Cole from WWE.com), and bringing back the old-school 30/60/90-second interviews with wrestlers in front of a green screen or in the lockerroom. For the post-show, recaps of major happenings, interviews with different participants for their take, and more hype for the next show. Hell, copy UFC and have "Match of the Night", "Move of the Night", and "Submission of the Night".

And if it's me, I'm hiring former wrestlers to be 'personalities' on these shows to discuss everything. Just like Fox has Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Michael Strahan, and Jimmy Johnson, I'm trotting out Ted Dibiase, Road Dogg, Ricky Steamboat, and Arn Anderson.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I can just see Scott getting overloaded with emails asking for EBay plugs. Some of the prices Ive seen on past links are laughable......

    ReplyDelete
  112. Except they currently need a ride to the arena....

    ReplyDelete
  113. Funny thing is the US version is the toned down version. The international release is even more insensitive. I was Vodka Drunkinski or something before getting hooked on 'soda.'

    ReplyDelete
  114. But in a surprise twist, it is the 'boyfriend' and not the father who dies from a sudden heart attack.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Yup! The only ones complaining seem to be the ones saying they don't understand why people would rather pay for this than steal low quality stuff instead.

    ReplyDelete
  116. That person would probably try to ride a lawnmower to the arena ala George Jones, no driver's license and no common sense required.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Sounds like a Japanese video game character to me.

    ReplyDelete
  118. She's it's mother, for one.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Id watch if they aired it....

    ReplyDelete
  120. Holy shit, WWE. Perfect network is perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  121. All WWE PPV's uncensored and uncut?? Yeah right.. Somehow I don't think they are showing Over The Edge..

    ReplyDelete
  122. Assuming WWE fulfills all the promises being made about the network (big assumption), this will go down as the most satisfying product/service they've ever produced.

    ReplyDelete
  123. This is very.. very tempting. A hell of a bargain for cord cutters like myself. My tipping point will be if they have all episodes of Championship Wrestling, SNME, and Crockett shows. Nitros and Raws are fine, but I could spend the rest of my life watching the old 80's shows and be perfectly happy.

    ReplyDelete
  124. My one real question at the moment: They say *every* archived pay-per-view will be available. Will this actually include Over the Edge '99? They've never released the whole show in any form or fashion, anywhere, so I'd be more than a tiny bit surprised to actually see it turn up now.

    ReplyDelete
  125. As I understand it, those won't be available at launch, but the assumption is that they'll be filling in the back-library of stuff as time rolls along. A lot of the older and/or more obscure stuff needs to be converted into a more streaming-friendly format from my understanding.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Thanks for the response. Technically the network is worth it for the PPVs alone, but I can't imagine a better use of $10 a month.. even though somehow I feel there will a bait and switch somewhere

    ReplyDelete
  127. I don't think they would be that crazy and I can't imagine anybody actually wanting to see that show.
Wrestling is supposed to be about enjoying yourself and having fun but what kind of enjoyment can you get out of a man falling to his death doing a stupid stunt that he never should have done in the first place and a handful of depressed and despondent wrestlers going through the motions after said death?

    ReplyDelete
  128. You can bet WWE will be ramping up efforts to remove all unauthorized postings of their copyrighted material from youtube and other sites.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I'm Old School.. I bought a dual VGA to RCA converter from Amazon and I watch shows on both a second monitor and an old flat screen CRT television. Best $30 purchase ever.

    ReplyDelete
  130. But wait, will I need to order Elimination Chamber to see it in decent time, or will it be available the next day when I inevitably call out sick?

    ReplyDelete
  131. It's taken me weeks to unload Starrcade 99 and Havoc 99 st decent prices when they are usually very in demand.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Launching in the UK end of 2014/beginning of 2015. I'm in!

Seems people are more positive about this then they were a year ago...

    ReplyDelete
  133. In Other News: TNA just made an announcement that TNA Wrestling will now be available exclusively on UHF Channel 61 and online streaming via the Real Player format.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Also playable on WinAmp

    ReplyDelete
  135. Maybe it's because they finally realized that streaming TV is the true wave of the future and it's best to hop on that train than to create a cable channel and be at the mercy of unimaginative, outdated, blood sucking cable companies, after all if anybody deserves to be fucked over it's the cable companies.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I think people were expecting more of a broadcast cable network. Having this be on demand as well as being a bonafide bargain makes a lot of people more receptive.. It's like how itunes made people steal music less. Giving people an easier cheaper alternative to stealing usually works.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Too bad, Austin vs Dude Love is awesome, if already on too any of their releases.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Uh-oh, this just in: UHF Channel 61 has just been purchased by Univision and will now be a Spanish-only TV station, it looks like TNA is screwed (again).

    ReplyDelete
  139. I thought Austin faced Taker on that show...

    ReplyDelete
  140. In addition all TNA PPV's will be on sale the day after at participating Blockbuster Video stores.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I would just buy a roku and a hdmi cable. You will love it is you ever use Netflix/hulu/amazon/ESPN

    ReplyDelete
  142. Im thinking there wont be a Best of Benoit hour or anything of the sort. They will just leave him as part of the shows he was a part of. With it being on demand, if you dont wanna watch him, watch something else.....

    ReplyDelete
  143. Hook up your PC to your television via HDMI cable, and have a dual display at your desk as well. No, seriously. I've been doing this for the past five years, and I could never go back now.

Otherwise, it all depends on what you already have. If you have any sort of modern gaming console, it sounds like that'll work. You could run a laptop through your TV the same way. Lots of tablets have some kind of HDMI-out support. All kinds of options.

    ReplyDelete
  144. "Hey this is Slick Ric coming to you with exciting new TNA releases on VHS and Beta"

    ReplyDelete
  145. And one week later at participating Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery stores, VHS format only!

    ReplyDelete
  146. I would love to see a MST3K type show where current wrestlers like Punk and Ziggler can give "live" commentary during entire shows like SNME or World Championship Wrestling. Just a talking head or PIP box with them winging it would be well worth the money.

    ReplyDelete
  147. That would have to be "Slick" Ric Converse since TNA can't afford Ric Flair at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Road Warriors breaking pencil neck geeks in half in 30 second squash matches = $9.99 well spent.

    ReplyDelete
  149. ...which is crazy considering Flair would work for whiskey and a single Ritz cracker

    ReplyDelete
  150. But "Slick" Ric Converse would be willing to work for a can of Milwaukee's Best and a single Dollar General cracker so he's the cheaper option.

    ReplyDelete
  151. OTA 98 he faced Foley. A year later he faced Taker (and Owen passed)

    ReplyDelete
  152. Why would anyone think Over The Edge 98 wouldnt be shown?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Luckily, it's also streamable on the Magnavox Odyssey and the Atari 2600.

  154. Well it tried to be streamable but those systems immediately crashed and died from being unable to handle the resolution.

  155. Not to try to justify stealing, but a lot of people do it when they really believe the price is just too ridiculous. Wrestlemania for $60, okay. Battleground for $60? Time to stream it! Buying a full CD of crap songs to find one decent one for 20 bucks? Steal it! Those types aren't necessarily looking to steal everything in sight, they just want the product but don't feel the price is a fair one for what they want. It's a justification, sure, but like you said, when given a reasonably priced alternative, a lot of people will take advantage.

  156. Interesting question. My guess is no, but I'm not sure. Maybe for the sake of completion they actually would, I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yeah, I don't think it's a PPV I'd ever care to watch. I don't judge anyone who does, but...not for me I don't think. It'd just be depressing.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I think you missed a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  159. It's funny, this is the one time that the WWE did essentially what *everyone* here was asking for, except went an extra step to go beyond their wildest dreams. Super smart.

    ReplyDelete
  160. You're probably right, but if that's the only exception, I'd give them a pass there.

I wouldn't be surprised if they cut a bit here or there too. Benoit will be there, but a lot of the matches that have him on the DVDs and Blu Ray cut the commentary and crowd noise when he's being referenced, not sure if they'd bother to do that here though. I bet there's a little bit of editing on Vengeance: Night of Champions to try to remove any reference to Benoit not being there that night (I never saw the PPV so I don't know what they said, but even mentioning his absence is a little uncomfortable considering why he isn't there). I assume the majority of stuff stays in though.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Well, they probably should be slammed if they're promoting him, but I can't imagine they'd do anything of the sort. Presumably just include him in the on demand stuff where he happens to be on the show for the sake of completion, which is how they should do it.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Hell with that. Hire Maffew and run Botchamania as your Adult Swim-style show.

    ReplyDelete
  163. New question:

Has there *ever* been anything WWE has done in the history of Scott's writing ('96 onwards) that has met with near universal acclaim like this has? I honestly have never remembered seeing the comments thread so positive.

    ReplyDelete
  164. They mentioned it during the CM Punk/Johnny Nitro match however when they re-aired that match one week later on ECW, they muted out the Benoit references so I can see them just splicing in the ECW TV airing of that match onto the PPV, they also did that on the DVD so it shouldn't be too hard.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I would think the Rock/Hogan announcement for a Mania match was met with universal approval....

....I also recall the original Nexus angle going over quite well on the blog night it happened...

    ReplyDelete
  166. Everyone was buzzing when the pipebomb happened as well from what I remember.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The moment when Bryan got the pin on Cena. That was a nice few seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Well, we are wrestling fans dammit and we like to be positive, it's just that wrestling hasn't given us a lot of reasons to be positive until now.
This is seriously just as ingenious as HBO coming up with on-demand content about five years before it became the norm, much like how that platform revitalized HBO and made them even bigger, this will likely greatly benefit WWE and lead to another big business boom which will be good for everyone, especially the fans and wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Aww yeah, those 3 are good examples!! Thanks guys. It's rare we're almost all 100% pleased with something so it's nice to remember those for me.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I would be fine if they didn't release that on the network. Although you could edit the incident and the commentary. I will say I would like RAW IS OWEN on there to watch, it's such a touching tribute.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Uh, I'm ready to sign up for this now, please. So long as this thing streams well, I don't see how this can be a bad thing. Every monthly ppv and the entire archive of wwe,wcw and ecw ppv's. PS3 compatibility at launch. As someone who tape traded shitty vhs converts for years, this is a godsend. If they start uploading old tv episodes, I'm going to trash hundreds of discs and free up a lot of space in my closet.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I got rid of my rasslin tape collection years ago but it was pretty impressive as like you I did the tape trading thing in 90s interweb wrestling sites. Had some GREAT stuff from Japan, Super J Cup tourneys 94 and 95, friends used to like watching that stuff in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Unfortunately, if they did that then there would be no one that would continue to give CZW the treatment it deserves.
No offense to anyone out there but a CZW Botchamania done by anyone besides Maffew would likely be not nearly as funny.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I think the difference here with Over the Edge 99 and the Benoit stuff is that they arent being marketed and sold as WWE releases, they are just a part of the online content....

....while some might not be into watching either, they are a part of history and regardless of what some might want or not want, that can never be changed....

...With it being on demand, the viewer has the choice of what they want to watch, so I wouldnt be shocked if everything was uncut and was in the library...

cnn has 4 articles up about CES, and not a single one of them mentions the network

    too funny

    ReplyDelete
  176. CNN has 4 articles devoted to the CES but no mention of the WWE Network? I guess that's why they continue to be DFL (Dead Fucking Last).

not sure what your point is, but given that vince is so intent on being the symbol first and foremost of all things popular culture and mainstream, it's amusing b/c the hubris could do him so good

    ReplyDelete
  178. Good point. Life without JEESUS would be a bit duller.

    ReplyDelete
  179. The point is this is legitimate news and a potential game changer for the streaming TV industry and yet CNN snubs that to cover something totally insignificant much like how they ignored the Oklahoma floodings last year to cover a Jodi Arias trial that everyone else on the planet had stopped giving a shit about long before then.

for the sake of good discussion, is it really any different than netflix, just in tv form?

i also heard they're going to have live commentary from tna superstars during impact via ICQ

    ReplyDelete
  184. How unedited will the network be? Will the nip slips still be in tact? Will I be able to go back and re-live the "cum sucking gutter slut" moment? Etc. etc.

Also, maybe I'll cancel Netflix and sign up for this. I don't watch much Netflix anyways.

Also also, they should do like TiVo and offer a Lifetime Subscription at around $500. I'd go for it. Maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Well, Netflix doesn't offer PPVs, this service does and Netflix is frequently at the mercy of the movie and TV studios which means that shows like 24 and Family Guy and movies like The Avengers can be there one week and then gone the next week all because of a little pay dispute (that's why South Park hasn't been on Netflix in quite some time).
WWE owns all of their content so obviously you won't have to worry about 20 different shows suddenly vanishing from the service, never to be seen again.
It's like HBO GO in a way since HBO puts most of their shows on their service permanently for a monthly price and because HBO created the shows themselves, you don't have to worry about the shows disappearing, the only catch with HBO GO is when it comes to movies, much like Netflix, they too are at the mercy of the movie studios and movies disappear as soon as their rights deals for those particular movies are up.
So you see, while the WWE Network goes by a Netflix and HBO GO model, it doesn't have the restrictions that those two services have since they own all of their own content and it has the content to draw in all bases, old fans, casual fans, diehards, kids, there's something for everyone and having something for everyone is a formula that has never been a failure and it will be huge not just for wrestling for the entire streaming TV movement in general as this movement continues to grow while antiquated cable TV continues to die a slow, agonizing death.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I disagree that it's the diehards that are supporting the PPV business. I personally think it has to be, in majority, their target demo of young kids that get their parents to order these things. There's something to be said for being "creatures of habit" but I can't imagine long-time fans shelling out the kind of money it requires for a product that they don't like.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Even on the basis of saving on the ppv, you basically get the ppv for ten dollars each month?

Won't that kill the ppv business?who would buy a ppv for 60 dollars now?

Maybe they see the writing on the wall...

They should make an offer to pwg and roh to screen their back catalouge...
