Recommendation today is WWE's Bragging Rights 2009. I caught this show again recently, and as far as match quality goes, it was a pretty solid show. John Morrison vs. The Miz was OK, a decent Divas match as far as Divas matches go, the Iron Man match between Cena and Orton, the pretty good Bragging Rights match between RAW and Smackdown, but the highlight for me was watching Batista turn on Rey Mysterio after their 4-way match. "I'm not playing. I'm gonna rip your head off" was a mark out quote from Dave at the time. A forgotten show, but a very good effort.

Comments

  1. Shane Douglas didn't have the most distinguished career, but that interview he gave was fucking unreal. Holds up as one of the greatest interviews in the history of wrestling, on the level of Hogan's heel turn.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Tatanka's massive undefeated streak defies Kayfabe. The man doesn't lose for near two years, yet is never given a title shot? That's why undefeated streaks are tricky: either ya pull the trigger and move the lossless person up to the top, or you stop with the silly midcard after midcard victory.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Yep, easily the greatest thing he's ever done. Too bad it was all down hill after that. And also it's really sad the NWA still exists today despite that promo burying them for good. 20 years of continuing something no one gives a shit about is quite a feat.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Get home and see what's in the network. Fucking Jannetty vs polo. Ugh

Seriously, why did anyone ever give a fuck about the Dynamite Kid? There are a hundred guys that can 'go' in the ring, but he's pretty much an elite asshole in the business.

    ReplyDelete
  6. When did Steamboat go against Vince?

    ReplyDelete
  7. That article seems less like Wrestlemania XXXI predictions, and more like predictions of things that may happen before Wrestlemania XXXI.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Holly is second on to JBL in wrestlers I hate in real life. Just seems like an insecure douchebag.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Because while Cena go the pin, Wyatt's winning the war. I'm all for this. I might be the only one, but I'm all for this. Besides, where else are you going to put Cena? He can't feud with Evolution (those are NOT fresh matches at all), and every other quality heel is too low on the card for him at this point unless they really want to elevate someone from the midcard.

    Here's your heel roster:
    Alberto Del Rio- stale matchup
Alexander Rusev- a bit early for this
Bad News Barrett- not fresh, and I'm not sure Barrett's ready to be back at the top of the card just yet (his wrestling the other night wasn't great- really needs a new finisher)
    Batista/Orton/HHH- stale
New Age Outlaws- dear God no
Brad Maddox- if you were ever going to transition him to a better role, this would be it, but I don't think they really want to move him into that role
Brock Lesnar- stale, and wrong idea for Brock
    Brodus Clay- still on NXT
Cesaro- is he even really a heel at this point? I'd love to see it, but it could really harm Cesaro at this point. But it's probably being kicked around at WWE.
Christian- not sure Christian is going to keep his spot at this point with all the injuries and his contract
    Curtis Axel- dear god no
Damien Sandow- I'd love it, but I think Cena squashed him for good, sadly.
3 Man Band- That would be a bends-inducing elevation from the bottom of the card.
Fandango- that act of his suffers without Summer Rae. But I admit, I think this would be a great feud. It's time to see if Fandango's ready, and no better guy to do that with than Cena. That could be a really fun feud.
    Jack Swagger- stale
    The Miz- NO
    Ryback- stale
Titus O'Neil- not impossible, but probably too high for Titus right now.
William Regal- hey, he's on the roster. It's not going to happen, but we can dream, can't we?

And that's it. That's your heel roster (other than the Wyatt family). So who are you pitting Cena against if not Bray Wyatt?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Over the weekend I caught a RAW from 1996 featuring the Ultimate Warrior. In addition Vader puts Yokozuna on the shelf and HBK fights Diesel after his match with Lawler. Great show!

    ReplyDelete
  11. As the guy who answered the question, I admit, this is a good candidate...

    ReplyDelete
  12. This would be an awesome Buzzfeed 64-man tournament...

    ReplyDelete
  13. ...to be fair, there are many on this board who would be patient while waiting for Kelly Kelly. (I'm not one of them, but Kelly Kelly had a ton of fans.)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I disagree that Bray is winning the war. It was was am evenly well built feud that saw Cena go over, cleanly at the biggest show if the year. That's usually the end of the war for most feuds.

I don't mind them having a multi ppv feud. There isn't a clear cut opponent for Cena right now. I just think it's been a pretty below average story that's I'm losing interest in by the week since it hasn't progressed in a compelling or logical fashion

    ReplyDelete
  15. Started watching No Mercy 2000. Pretty horrendous show to open. Got up to the Y2J/Xpac cage when the Network died on me. Heard the last two matches are pretty sick though, so I'll continue it later on.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Unique storytelling can still be bad storytelling.

    ReplyDelete
  17. You know how they could ratchet it up?

Have Wyatt show up on a "Make A Wish" playdate.

Seriously, that would be amazing. They could fake it with a kid actor, but the crowd would go ape.

    ReplyDelete
  18. BOOK. THAT. SHIT. Maybe even have him kidnap the Make A Wish kid

    ReplyDelete
  19. I always thought it was nice of HeelTista to give Rey a heads up before he took Rey's head off with a decapitating clothesline.

Watched Survivor Series 1995 and it was a really enjoyable show. Diesel vs Bret really is a forgotten classic and the survivor series matches are all entertaining. Very much enjoyed the heels and faces being forced to team with one another in the wild card survivor series matchup.

    ReplyDelete
  20. JBL at least doesn't have a permanent scowl all the time. I could see him actually having friends.

    ReplyDelete
  21. As a follow up to my post about No Mercy 2000, is there anything hotter than heel-Trish in 2000?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Heel Trish in 2004 perhaps

    ReplyDelete
  23. (Several weeks after winning the Intercontinental Championship, Steamboat asked WWF owner Vince McMahon for some time off to be with his wife Bonnie, who was expecting the birth of their first son, Richard, Jr. This did not sit well with WWF management as he had been molded to become a long-term Intercontinental Champion. The decision was made by WWF management to punish Steamboat by stripping him of the title. After a successful title defense against Hercules on the May 2 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, hedropped the belt to The Honky Tonk Man on the June 13 edition of Superstars;[30] his son was born a month later. Steamboat came back in time for the Survivor Series in November 1987.[31] WWF Management was still bitter over his impromptu sabbatical from his first WWF run, however, and he was not pushed or given any meaningful feuds)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sounds like a perfect time for him to go away for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So, the original plan was to have Batista win the title at Wrestlemania and leave 30 days later?

    ReplyDelete
  26. This. Also heel Lita in 2005 - 2006

    ReplyDelete
  27. At least Warrior week is over. Don't mean to be an insensitive prick (right now) but man am I sick of hearing about him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Close. The ORIGINAL plan was to try and get people to care he had come back.

  30. The Love-Matic Grampa!April 21, 2014 at 9:21 AM

I think the Make-A-Wish people would have something to say about these scenarios ("you want to do WHAT?!?"), probably with a few expletives thrown in.

That said, I'm sure there are more than a few MAW kids who would be absolutely thrilled to take part in a WWE angle and maybe even take a bump.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Only one new Raw added so far Blah...Going to watch that and the Warrior Docu to start my day.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I loved "The Big Shot" and kinda vaguely liked him after that just because of how much entertainment he gave me for a brief time.

    ReplyDelete
  33. And they failed tramendusly

  36. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 9:26 AM

He was unique in the WWF at that time.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, but Lita isn't even in Trish's universe in terms of hotness.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why is it that divas are always hotter as heels? Is it because we equate heel with slut?

    ReplyDelete
  39. For a big he's got some serious speed,TNA should've give the title to him instead of Anderson in 2010,he was so more sympathetic than Anderson.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Pretty much so.

Heels = bad girls = sluts = better vagina (most times)

This should be on Sesame Street or something

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just have the Wyatt's ambush Cena in the middle of one of his visit, you can still have a kid actor in them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 9:32 AM

  44. Finally saw Cesaro/Cena from the February 2014 Raw and it was fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  45. No, no I won't like it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. "I got the kind of cancer I won't get better from? Fuck it, I'm going out like Foley. Book it, Vince."

    ReplyDelete
  47. Come on, I'd the show where Batista turned heel and murdered Rey, how can it be forgettable? Plus, it had the conclusion of the Cena Orton series.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, the equivalent of Punk Cena from last year.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I abuse my GM powers on tonight's episode of BoD Monday Night RAW!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. HA HA HA someone downvoted this but it doesn't matter because we can't see how many times. New disqus FTW!

    ReplyDelete
  51. But Punk/Cena had a PILEDRIVER!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The Love-Matic Grampa!April 21, 2014 at 9:45 AM

Could WWE actually turn a MAW kid heel by having him show up on RAW with Cena and the usual fanfare and then reveal that he's joined the Wyatts? Now that might actually "break" Cena.

Of course, WWE might not want the publicity of thousands of fans booing a sick kid, but still.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The less said about that Cena/Orton feud, the better.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I will have to hijack the show and start the... :: Clever thing I can't think of right now :: Movement!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Patterson talks about it in one of those legends of wrestling episodes

    ReplyDelete
  56. If cesaro won the match he was a MADE man.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'll assume you're threatening the all-time record.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The highlight of that match will always be Orton trying to kill Cena with the pyro.

    ReplyDelete
  59. But unlike Sandow, the loss didn't hurt him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Because they still booked him strong.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The 2007 was great,the rest ...no.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The Sober Movement?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think the issue is because of Cena's promo (which to me sounded almost like a burial), Bray HAS to win or he looks like a total bitch. Cena's promo was borderline cocky, but I guess that continues the WWE's pattern of having faces act like total assholes....

    ReplyDelete
  64. Book it in the right city and joining the Wyatts would get that kid a monster face pop.

Only if Cena went all out with the look and grew a beard would I care.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yep, I think Cena was rubbing in the fact that Bray wasn't getting to him. So now the ball is in Bray's court. He indeed has to win, or at least get to Cena somehow. So the match should be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I still think it would be a terrible idea, as it would scare the hell out of future kids who might have wanted Cena as their wish. They would be afraid of hurting their hero, so they could settle for Zach Ryder or something (because nobody cares if HE gets beat up) ZING!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 10:24 AM

  73. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 10:25 AM

i was at the bragging rights ppv

pretty fun live, except we had some major seating issues b/c a couple of our original seats got allocated for cameras, and instead of moving all of us (they should have been able to see the seats were purchased in bulk), they moved half of us. what if it had been an adult with 3 kids? major fuck up. i used that argument to score free tix to the next raw that came in

our upgraded seats theoretically were better (were 2 or 3 sections up, got moved to up off the floor), except we were behind the mixing desk, so we had crap right in our line of vision. after a while when it was apparent nearby seats weren't being used, we moved, and the rest of the show was awesome.

loved batista's heel turn live. i'd been to the hhh/benoit iron man match years before, so the cena/orton iron man match was nothing new - you just have to pace yourself while you watch so you don't invest too quickly and then get tired or bored - though orton trying to kill cena with all the pyro was amusing

  77. Isn't it rumored Steve Kerr is a shoe in?

    ReplyDelete
  78. My brother and I got moved at Unforgiven 2008 because we were in the uppers in front of a spotlight. A guy came and asked me "How many in your party?" I told him two and he took both of us and gave us club seats, a near $100 upgrade.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Batista should've miliary pressed Rey into the 12th row.

    ReplyDelete
  80. No, it was someone different. I know the interview/chick that you're thinking about. Wasn't Jordan caliber hot iirc

    ReplyDelete
  81. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 10:30 AM

Wait, the person who wrote about Reigns winning the Rumble is Ryan Murphy?

    ReplyDelete
  82. It wreaks of WWE being sorry for bullying. They treated Warrior like crap for decades, dragged his name through the mud, released a heavily offensive DVD that Warrior seemed very saddened by during his HOF speech.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think Bray has to win, but I'm almost even more curious if they go the "get to Cena" route. How on earth would they do that? Cena no-sold a Brock beat down for the ages, so I'm not sure what else they could do along those lines. Yeah, they could have Bray try and manipulate some kids/hurt a kid, does "that" set him off?

    ReplyDelete
  84. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 10:31 AM

  85. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 10:32 AM

what happened with us was that we just passed the tickets around, and the ones that i and another guy had happened to be the problem ones. our 2 friends got in, and then when we went to enter, the little scanner thing gave back an x on our tickets and we were told to go to the box office...

...which was on the other side of the arena that we happened to be on. so b/w shuffling through the crowd to get to the other side of the arena, waiting for the box office to figure out the problem, then get into the show and get to our seats, we missed the dark match (christian vs. burchill). luckily we didn't miss any of the show itself. but when we sat at our new seats and had giant tech crap blocking 1/3 of the ring, we were further pissed. luckily i guess we were in a comp area, and not all of the seats were used, so we shifted over after the 1st match

He has unfinished business with Mark Henry.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 10:37 AM

well, like i said, my immediate thought was, if the 4 tickets had been for an adult with 3 kids, that would have been a major problem, and they (the arena, in terms of seeing how the tix had been purchased) really should have known better than to just split the group in 2. so i made sure to file a complaint with the arena (both about splitting our group up and moving us to obstructed view seats, and was able to snag 4 free tix to the next wwe event there, which was a raw (last one at mellon arena before they tore it down)

the night before that raw, i went into a gas station around 12:30 am and a bunch of the nxt (this was just season 1!) guys happened to be there - dbry, barrett, gabriel, and michael tarver. tarver was looking at candy. otunga might have been there - there was a guy with his hood up, shades on, and talking into a phone, but i'm not sure

    ReplyDelete
  90. Any time Cena's father gets kicked in the head is always a plus.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Get a picture with any of them?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 10:45 AM

when i walked in, the only person i saw was gabriel, so i was like "whoa! hey justin, is it cool if i get a pic?" he said sure (he was standing in line to pay), but then i looked over and dbry and barrett walked around the corner, and i said a few words to them, by which point i think gabriel paid and went back to the car. then i saw tarver trying to decide what candy to get; he looked over at me and chuckled. i went to order some food at the grill, which is where i saw the guy who might have been otunga. they all were obviously making a pit stop, so i figured the best thing would be just to say hi, wish 'em a good show, and leave them be

    ReplyDelete

i said it during after the wm xxx thread and will say it again: cabs had one of the best lines when they showed cena's dad at ringside and he said something, "oh COME ON, now you just deserve anything bad that happens to you"

    ReplyDelete
  96. I already have the upvote record... might as well try and be the Walter Johnson of the BoD

    ReplyDelete
  97. You're getting quite the DV lineup today.

  98. Nice! Free tix is always a plus.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I liked Bob Holly's book. I got the feeling after reading it, that he has some severe anger problems, but wants to be a good person. I don't think the book quite clears him on anything. However, read his book if you want another opinion on him. His book changed my opinion on him. He's a hard working guy who cares about other wrestlers. I still think he's a bully though.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I like some of Bob Holly's matches. He had some great ones on WWE's ECW, before that promotion went to shit. I also felt like his match with Lesnar was the first 6 minutes of a great ***1/2 match. Its too bad HHH screwed him out of more time to have a long boring match with HBK.

    ReplyDelete
  101. That's exactly what I thought. There's no way Cena/Wyatt's is going to last that long. And why would Taker wait till next year to retire? It's obvious that he's done NOW.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It'd would be cool to see another Mania 2 situation with 3 separate sites. They should've done it with the brand split. Smackdown's Mania and RAW's Mania in two different sites.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 11:08 AM

i hate his promo style. he's always angry, even when he's not. i don't understand why people were so in love with him

    ReplyDelete
  104. So tonight we get Cesaro vs. RVD and Sheamus vs. Barrett. Should make for an excellent RAW.

    ReplyDelete
  105. That would piss off each and every person who goes to the show live. Unless the tickets are sold 1/3 of the regular price.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Yep, as I mentioned before, Sheamus better still be selling the knee.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 21, 2014 at 11:11 AM

  108. Yep. Executive producer of Glee and American Horror Story.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Is this how wrestlers royalties work? I'd have thought it would be " sign here for x amount and we can use you in our DVDs until the contract is up"

Or do they even get that? Like surely old minor wrestlers who were around in the 80's don't get that. Maybe wrestlers just royalties on a DVD if it's based on them?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I remember that. I was feeling so sorry for Shawn at the time. What was the story behind that?

    ReplyDelete
  111. It's also the show where Michael Cole stupidly said "There's no partners tonight!" during a 7 on 7 tag match. Why is this guy still employed?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Although I remember Cena's dad ruined it by showing up a week later completely no-selling the effects of the kick, nevermind that Shawn Michaels sold it by being on the shelf for five months.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Just wait until we get a Hogan Week when they have ANOTHER goddamn free trial week three or four weeks after their latest claim that there would never be another trial week again.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Superman genetics.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Wyatt beats Cena with Harper and Rowan's help at WM, Cena asks for a cage match to even the odds - how simple is that? God knows why they've gone this ass-backwards way.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I do wonder if the original plan was indeed for Cena to lose, but they pulled the audible and made Cena win, but kept the same storyline. I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Who cares about some boring place holder raw episode? Its splash city game 2.

Bet ya raw opens with hhh, theres a couple decent mod card matches, the shield does something whacky, Daniel Bryan and Kane do something, show ends with evolution and shield fighting... Got it!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Actually, thinking about it, if the Wyatt's can break into the Elimination Chamber, a steel cage should be no trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hey now, Florida Midget Kahagas gives a shit about the NWA.
I'm trying to think about anyone else that gives a shit about the NWA but I'm drawing a blank. Bob Trobich didn't even give enough of a shit to continue sticking around and he was there for 19 out of those 20 years!

    ReplyDelete
  120. That actually doesn't sound like a bad show at all.

    ReplyDelete
  121. The Reigns Rumble win and Lesnar/Cesaro are the only good (and possible) picks there, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Have fun watching it. Hopefully you have a dvr

    ReplyDelete
  123. Just curious, but how did you become a Warrior fan? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're from SoCal.

    ReplyDelete
  124. So did Vince tacitly or explicitly approve of that, or is "grow up and wrestle" sort of negotiable?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Chris Benoit used to to all of the same things DK was known for, but the internet liked his suplexes so it was totally acceptable.
