Foley on Cena

Hi Scott,

Hope all is well. Check out Foley's comments on last night's Cena/Bray segment:

"But, as good as it was, I could not fully enjoy the brilliant, chilling segment - one of the most memorable things I've seen on Raw in tears, because of ...because of...because of those WRISTBANDS! Because of those wristbands...and the HAT! AND the bright green FLUORESCENT SHIRT! .... I couldn't help but feel that "He's trying to sell me something". Every time he waved his cap, I thought, "he's trying to sell me a hat." Every time he walks through that curtain, I get the feeling he's trying to sell me something."

Foley is right! How can anyone take this storyline (or any Cena storyline) seriously when all you ever think when you see Cena on screen is that he's become a neon sign for new merchandise.  Your thoughts???

He's doing a hell of a job, judging by his merchandise sales.

Comments

  1. Clearly Foley doesn't realize that we are not to be concerned with being entertained, only with the company making money... everything is to be tolerated/accepted to that end.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I think it's the same reason why I couldn't like Duke the Dumpster. Freakin' Hefty lobby.

    ReplyDelete
  3. So Foley writing 500 word analyses of things he doesn't like about WWE is going to be a thing now? It wasn't just about Daniel Bryan and WrestleMania?

Who does he think he is, one of us?

    ReplyDelete
  4. This coming from Mick Foley of all people is quite rich. (Rich, like thousands of book sales!!)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Considering Foley's cheap pop/cheap plug history, he's off base on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Foley used to do EVERY appearance on camera carrying a book of his. He's down on the product now because of the legends deal thing, but he'll come around again... always does.

    ReplyDelete
  7. There were some WCW PPV's in the early/mid 1990's where they were doing a talent exchange or something of that type with NJPW (or some Japanese promotion) can anyone tell me what those shows were? Watching Liger on Starrcade 1991 made me want to see more Japanese stuff but I can't deal with a straight up Puro show.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Mick Foley posts on this very site under a different screen name.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good point on the book thing.

I believe you may be referring to the WCW/New Japan Supershows. As fas as I can tell, they are not available on the Network. 1991-1993. Youtube only contains clips of various matches from each show. I'm sure they can be found through alternate methods.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Really? I thought there were like some Spring Stampedes or something where they did that but it could be my imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  12. They went back three more times.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This would be a good observation if not for the fact that Cena's been doing this merchandise pimping for basically his whole career.
He does seem to put out a new t-shirt more and more frequently now though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Stranger in the AlpsApril 30, 2014 at 7:50 AM

You are correct, sir. Which makes it all the more amusing.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Starrcade 1995 is a "WCW v NJPW" show, with a Best of Seven series between the two promotions.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Bischoff LOVED his bike rallies.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What is this the text version of The Self-Destruction of John Cena?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The matches: Liger/Benoit, Kanemoto/Wright, Chono/Luger, Saito/Badd, Ohtani/Guerrero, Tenzan/Savage, and Sasaki/Sting.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yep, I found it strange that they used that on a Starrcade. Would have been perfect for a B PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Stranger in the AlpsApril 30, 2014 at 7:53 AM

Wrestle War 92 has a match between the Steiners and the team of Tatsumi Fujinami and Takayuki Iizuka that Scott gave ****1/4. Check it out.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's easily one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Every pro wrestler is trying to sell you something when they come through the curtain.

Of all the problems with that segment as it relates to this storyline, was Foley really trying to find one thing to bitch about that no one else was?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Seems that in the early/mid 1990's they liked to use Starrcade for show long gimmicks like Battle Bowl and this.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Though certainly not as much as Cena, I remember Steve Austin and The Rock frequently coming to the ring with new merchandise to do very serious promos. People took Hulk Hogan seriously in his "serious promos" against Andre and he looked like Big Bird whenever he was in the ring. Had Foley had more t-shirt designs in his hey-day Vince would have wanted him going to the ring in them for every promo.

WWF has constantly shilled merchandise on their programming for decades. This is nothing new. Heck, even those creepy sheep masks are WWE merchandise!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The funniest part about that event: The "main event" was a triangle match between Flair/Luger/Sting, with the winner facing Savage for the WCW title IMMEDIATELY.

So why are Sting and Luger in prior matches, and Flair is not? (Hell, Sting's match was RIGHT BEFORE the triangle match). Just a little too obvious there, WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is a reason their slogan was never something like "WCW - Home of the Smartest Booking"

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, but if Foley keeps this criticism thing up we can probably look forward to "The Self-Destruction of Mick Foley" DVD set.

Maybe Triple H will trot out his "Probably one of the most unprofessional guys I've ever stepped in the ring with" line again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hint: It's Jesse Baker

    ReplyDelete
  29. I was more put off by Cena's horrible "SERIOUS FACE" acting than his wristbands. Man has to try hard just to look like he gives a fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So if Cena smiles, people bitch. If he has a serious face, people bitch. Maybe he should just borrow Kane's mask?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Went through a thousand socks, did not draw a dime.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sorry, I guess it was more of a DISTURBED FACE. Serious Cena is good, but his acting during this feud has just been silly.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That Hog Wild just shows that WCW's lack of insight in planning shows. As Stranger mentioned, it's certainly worth a look, and if that Malenko-Benoit match were in front of an actual wrestling crowd, we would all remember it.

By the way, does anyone remember the reason they switched to Road Wild the following year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "The doctors said he should never wrestle again, and while yes that was true..."

    ReplyDelete
  35. I guess since they didn't bother building up a feud they needed to blow-off, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm all for a good Cena dig, but not when it comes to this. Mick is reaching.

    ReplyDelete
  37. And remember that time he wore that Santa hat to the ring?
    http://www.guysnation.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/11/foley-santa.jpg

What a ridiculous way to expose the business. Pro wrestlers should not be wearing Santa hats to the ring!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Harley Davidson politely pointed out* they had some sort of trademark/copyright on the use of "Hog" as it pertains to motorcycles. Sadly, Eric wasn't smart enough to change the theme to a LITERAL hog, of the animal variety. It would have fit those crowds just as well.

*Politely pointed out = Threatened to sue, most likely.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks. I assumed it involved some sort of legal action.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Where the Big Boys Book"

    ReplyDelete
  41. 20 years of chairshots to the head will do that.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Im all for expressing yourself but come on. Foley was 30 lbs over weighr and wearing sweat pants and cut off tie die shirts with fucking pit stains during his Austin feud.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You're not my type... thanks though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm watching the Razor/Kid vs. Quebecers match now. It's actually quite good.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'll have to try harder to find someone whose type I am ... right here, on Scott's Blog of Doom! *thumbs up, cheesy smile*

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey, I did read somewhere that Tony Schiavone was at Titan Tower to record stuff for a DVD project. Maybe they filmed him for this DVD:
"When I said, 'Huh, that'll put some butts in the
seats' about him winning the title, a lot of people laughed at me and thought I was being arrogant. But I think we can look back today and realize how prophetic I really was about Foley's inability to sell tickets."

sigh. As much as I love seeing Bruno, Hogan, Warrior, etc. all involved in the Hall of Fame, I miss their ridiculous inaccurate spin machine. Oh well, there is always the "Did You Know" bumpers for my WWE-spin fix.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I legit feared for Harlem Heat's safety there at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Is it really Vince Jordan?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I actually thought that made perfect sense. Sting was a face, and Luger was a tweener (More face than heel), so their WCW pride took over. Flair was a heel, so he didn't give a bleep about anything but himself.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Gotta move that merch mick. No more ppv rev, no more DVD sales, might not even get 200 mil on the TV deal, only 667k network subs. Cenas got to really butter that bread.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bunch of Donald Sterlings in the crowd?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Definitely not me. I don't bitch at WWE. I bitch at people who bitch about WWE. Big big diff!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Who was one of the hottest acts on wrestling history and had some of the best matches ever and made some big money IAF

    ReplyDelete
  54. You never know at these biker rallies.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It's more like if he does a bad job, people bitch. And when he has to act, he does a bad job. And when he no-sells serious stuff, that's a bad job. When he wrestles he does a good job.

    ReplyDelete
  56. If so I'm mildly impressed about the change in his tone of writing. I can almost always tell when someone switches it up because they still sound the same. Not that it would be that hard to do but its some true commitment to the gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Nail, meet hammer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Mick Foley needs to stop being so damn bitter. Just shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Stranger in the AlpsApril 30, 2014 at 8:35 AM

Oooohhhh yeah, THAT show. Derrrrrrrrr. My apologies, Mr. Parallax1978. Between misleading facts, spelling mistakes and moments of cloudy memory, I do believe I need to get checked for brain tumors.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Don't do that... if it turns out to be true that you have a tumor I will have to regret being mean to you for your past sins... plus you know it'll suck that you're going to die... but mostly I don't want to feel a slight bit of regret for a brief moment, that's #1 on my list of concerns here.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm just still trying to figure out why Cena would feel threatened.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't think Farva was disputing that. But Foley didn't have a traditional "Superstar Look" -- he'd admit that himself (many times in his books, in fact). He managed to be awesome anyway, of course.

Next to Haystacks Calhoun Foley is the last wrestler that should be commenting on another wrestler's look.

    ReplyDelete
  63. He sold 6 times more merchandise than the number 2 best seller last month... until that day comes where someone consistently outsells Cena then we can talk about change, until then wwe would be nuts to throw away the constant flow of cash entering the companies pockets.

Interestingly I wonder where Cena ranks historically interms of merchandise sells? Surely he has caught up or even overtaken Austin?

    ReplyDelete
  64. That's true, but I don't see how that's an argument against what he wrote.

For that matter, I don't think Foley's character would have worked if he was in shape or a good looking guy, He was like the 90's version of Dusty.

That said, I don't think his point was valid, because I doubt the merch stuff is cena's call in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  65. KENTA signs with the wwe? Woah. Kind of old for them isn't he? I'd say though, the wwe hiring highly respected veterans, is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  66. AverageJoeEverymanApril 30, 2014 at 8:46 AM

    Bring back Juan Cena

    ReplyDelete
  67. Foley had a great and unique look and made a fortune wrestling. I'd say he's free comment on anything he wants. Also he's not commenting on his look, he's saying cena shilling too much merch hurts a serious promo.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Zeb won't allow it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Probably, due to Austin's run on top being rather short. Cena's been on top for nearly 10 years now, Austin's run was about 4-5.

    ReplyDelete
  70. AverageJoeEverymanApril 30, 2014 at 8:50 AM

nope those crowds didnt have pay black dudes millions racists, they had stab black man racists.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think he means, that you can't sell a seriuos story, if you are looking like an neon-clown.

Imagine Austin with pink shorts and yellow shirts or Rock with the outfit of Cena... doesn't fit.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Could we be getting some modern day version of the Muta/Sting series of matches with KENTA/Bryan? They really should be working on making a list of guys to work with Bryan while he's on top.

Or you think they're just bringing in the guy for his finisher as another slap to CM Punk? Maybe he'll be given the mist gimmick or play Oddjob to Brad Maddox?

    ReplyDelete
  73. He's the same age as Bryan and Cesaro. Mid to late 30s is probably too old for the though unless you bring something really great to the table.

    ReplyDelete
  74. He should hire Caliber as his manager then.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thing is, storyline wise, Cena had no idea what was gonna happen. In his mind, it was just an interview segment like hundreds of others. Why wouldn't he wear his usual gear? Just another hole in Foley's swiss cheese criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  76. "The fact of the matter is, I became a star without his help."

    ReplyDelete
  77. So, is Foley officially the bitter old guy?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'd love for them to give Takeshi Morishima another chance. He's dropped a ton of weight and looks the best he's been his whole career now.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Foley has legit points, but he's way off base on this one. Like everyone else has said, wrestlers got to sell their products to make that money.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I don't see why Cena would change his attire. He's worn that for years and has never deviated. This is just looking for something to criticize

    ReplyDelete
  81. Because it wasn't the first interview segment of this feud and the booker are knowing what is coming and they could tell Cena, that he should take this a little bit more serious, to get the Wyatts over.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yea, I pretty much agree with all of this. I'd just take his criticism a little more seriously if he didn't look like a fucking moving UPS driver driver while he was headlining shows

    ReplyDelete
  83. I don't think you could have missed my point more, even if you tried. If anything, Cena wearing "serious gear" out of the blue would have given everything away.

    ReplyDelete
  84. For such a smart guy Foley sure does say dumb things sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  85. ... because it never fit their characters in the first place.

Cena's ALWAYS been like that, in some form or another.

    ReplyDelete
  86. IAF? I just googled and it comes up "Indian Air Force"

Anyway, I'd argue that 80% of that was Austin and Vince. He had a unique looked that worked for him. He drew money because be was in the middle of the hottest act ever. He 2 as also great in other areas. I don't think he ever had a look that others would try and emulate.

He can say whatever he wants, this seems as a reach because it's coming from a guy who never had "the look" and his point is pretty invalid.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I thought he was older because I could have sworn I've seen him wrestle Dr death in like 1993 or 94 but maybe not.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I would certainly think so. I mean, I know Austin was on absolute fire, but Cena's been on top way longer (which is just weird, if you think about it), and I see his shirts on kids a lot. I mean, like, everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  89. It's not the expressions that are the problem. It's the fact that it's all so disinegenous and the reason why Cena is stale as fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  90. From all the guys from previous eras, it's kind of weird to think that Foley is the one not on good terms with WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Agreed. I would have bet it woulda ended up being Austin

    ReplyDelete
  92. I can rarely enjoy cena's wrestling because the other stuff is so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Exactly, after 2000 he basically just hocked his books for every WWE appearance.

I'm thinking this has to be a work for some reason, because Mick isn't this hypocritical.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm actually surprised Cena didn't smirk and then fu all the kids at once.

    ReplyDelete
  95. That's where I am. Cena has proven to be such a hilariously bad actor that they need to stop this now. Just let him wrestle and do his corny stuff for the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  96. AverageJoeEverymanApril 30, 2014 at 9:16 AM

pretty sure that was the other Kenta (Kobashi) not this one which is KENTA (Kobayashi).

    ReplyDelete
  97. AverageJoeEverymanApril 30, 2014 at 9:16 AM

Did a toon finally finish both brothers off? Need to know!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Wasn't he the former world hotdog eating champion?

    ReplyDelete
  99. No, Kenta is retired, the smaller KENTA (the caps are the official style) was his protégé

Kenta Kobashi used his last name in billing

    KENTA does not

    ReplyDelete
  100. I heard those comments in Cactus Jack's voice as I was reading them...it just seemed right that way.

    ReplyDelete
  101. What? He has nothing to give. He was always the same.

    ReplyDelete
  102. ARRRRGH THE BARBARIANApril 30, 2014 at 9:22 AM

He's a shitty actor, I don't think that's some outrageous statement. The image of him being on his knees because kids were wearing sheep masks was so ridiculous it was hilarious.

Unless he though that was taking a cut out of his merch check

    ReplyDelete
  103. Austin shirts were on EVERYONE everywhere not just 8 year olds. Cena probably has overtaken Austin due to both longevity and more merchandise options being available but he's nowhere near the merchandise mover Austin was at his peak.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Foley forgets that EVERY wrestler today is wearing their own merchandise or a t-shirt for some ppv. It's the nature of the business now even if at times it comes across as out of place or out of character.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Watching the Countdown episode about tag teams. They included Rock and Sock and the Freebirds, but no Blonds, Harts, or Steiners? No buys.

    ReplyDelete
  106. The Love-Matic Grampa!April 30, 2014 at 9:24 AM

This is why I think social media in general has done just as much harm as good in the world. While it can serve as an important tool in areas where the media is strongly controlled or outright silenced, it also creates a forum where people can express the first thought that pops into their heads at any time without fear of censorship. And in the wrong hands (or even in the right hands but at the wrong time) that can be dangerous. How many times have you wanted to tell someone off, but then thought better of it after you've calmed down? How many times have you formulated a strong opinion on a matter and then realized you were wrong after more facts became available? How many times have you just blurted out a comment and immediately regretted doing so? Well, now thanks to Facebook, Twitter, etc. those comments and thoughts are out there for the world to see, and can easily be taken out of context, misinterpreted or misconstrued.

People really need to stop and think twice before hitting "post" or "send".

    ReplyDelete
  107. its been the nature of the WWF/E since the 80's. Piper made good money from the Hot Rod shirts I would assume.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Very well said. I get worked up a lot playing basketball, and I always remind myself not to say what I want to say. Then, five minutes later, I'm fine.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Oh, yeah, I 100% can agree with that. You couldn't go anywhere for a solid two years without seeing at least a couple of Austin shirts.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Stranger in the AlpsApril 30, 2014 at 9:30 AM

Well, then, maybe it's sleep deprivation.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hollywood Blondes were entertaining for the 10 months or so they were together, but their importance in wrestling history is VASTLY overrated. The other 2 (assuming you mean Hart Foundation), I do totally agree.

    ReplyDelete
  112. For a pro wrestler, I really don't think he's that bad of an actor. I guess it's just subjective, I felt he did a good job in selling disbelief/disappointment.

    ReplyDelete
  113. agreed about the Blondes but does the Rock and Sock connection have any importance in the grand scheme of tag team history? At least the mega powers had the big breakup angle

    ReplyDelete
  114. Yeah, Rock & Sock didn't even have that many matches together, that's a strange inclusion. I just don't think the Blondes deserved a spot in there. I guess R & S were part of one of the highest rated segments ever.

    ReplyDelete
  115. The Blonds might not have had the big historic moment, but they were a hell of a team when it came to having great matches with different teams.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I vaguely remember Keller saying several years ago that some people in WWE didn't like dealing with Foley when he was making his part-time appearances, because he had developed a really huge ego. I don't remember anything more than that, though.

    ReplyDelete
  117. You're an old man

    ReplyDelete
  118. I take that back

    ReplyDelete
  119. I have to say that confused me greatly several years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  120. "People took Hulk Hogan seriously in his "serious promos" against Andre and he looked like Big Bird whenever he was in the ring."

LOL, this is so true. It's a testament both to the era and to Hogan's charisma that he could get away with things like that.

"HOW MUCH DID THEY PAY FOR THE PLASTIC SURGERY BROTHER!?!?"

    ReplyDelete
  121. Very confusing. So this is the one that fought Joe?

    ReplyDelete
  122. It's you isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  123. People seem to be going off on that paragraph there, but it's taken out of context. Foley was talking about Cena's character being stale. Foley wrote a small, articulate essay on Cena the man and Cena the character. It was accurate at times, provocative in others. This was NOT a Superstar Billy Graham poem dedicated to Chris Jericho dying.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Iaf=in all fairness lol

Foley was the 3rd biggest star in the biggest era in wrestling history. Huge huge huge huge star. He drew money because he had a brilliant mind for the business. He's free to critique anyone. Its a fair point, cena shilling merch hurts Wyatt, but tough shit mick, cena has to bring home the bacon. This isn't 1998, they need cena to sell t shirts and hats badly.

    ReplyDelete
  125. http://i1.wp.com/elliedi.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Keanu-Whoa.jpg

    ReplyDelete
  126. You know why Foley is mad? Because his time is up! Cena's time is now!

    ReplyDelete
  127. "This was NOT a Superstar Billy Graham poem dedicated to Chris Jericho dying."

    dafuq?

    ReplyDelete
  128. I still don't get how Cena wearing the same gear he's worn for years can hurt Wyatt in any way. I just don't see the link at all.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Not their fault wcw fucked them up. They could have been the biggest tag team ever.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Your_Favourite_LoserApril 30, 2014 at 10:02 AM

hog wild, the show where dusty complete no-sells the discussion of dick murdoch's passing

    ReplyDelete
  131. And hey, Jumping Joey Maggs could have been the biggest singles wrestler ever. He wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Stupid comparison. They were a huge act, probably the most over act in wcw, and got broken up due to politics and then went on to be giant singles stars. Wcw fucked up.

    ReplyDelete
  133. IT WAS ME GRAY! IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!

    ReplyDelete
  134. So they should be a top 10 tag team of all time based on what COULD have happened had they stayed together 5 years instead of 10 months? Ok then!!

    ReplyDelete
  135. I hope it does hurt Wyatt because I can't stand the gimmick but the idea is cena needs to be more serious in selling what's happening as opposed to being focused on hawking merch. It will be fine though. This is like steamboat looking down on savage for pre planning a match. Sure to anotjer wrestler who has there own ideas its shit, but to the fans watching we don't care/know.

    ReplyDelete
  136. But Foley can see him...that's the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Over the Rock n Sock Connection or the Freebirds? Certainly.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I sort of thought this too. He's been wearing basically the same getup for years now, it's not like he recently added new stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  139. HAVE A NICE DAY!

    ReplyDelete
  140. Cactus Jack was also wearing his Cactus Jack shirt, but it wasn't as flashy and distracting as Cenas gear is.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Well the Freebirds were before my time, but didn't they draw nuclear heat everywhere for a good decade or so? And I'm guessing the Rock & Sock thing is just to keep their movie star happy.

    ReplyDelete
  142. You mean Foley should've thought before sending the "My Hall of Fame speech was better than Ultimate Warrior's" tweet?

Yeah, probably. Regardless of whether or not the guy died three days later, it was classless.

    ReplyDelete
  143. No.

Kobashi, a big brutal fucker, fought Joe.

KENTA is a junior. Daniel Bryan sized

    ReplyDelete
  144. Wait, by "this" did he mean the one coming tp wwe or the one who he saw in '94.

Cause the one who might go to WWE never fought Joe

    ReplyDelete
  145. Zeb needs to do an interview about how he sneaked across the border from Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  146. WWE should rehire Schiavone. I'd take him over Cole EASY.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Seems strange that a criticism like this would come from a fellow wrestler. Smells like a work to me.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I do sorta get what Foley was saying, that seeing all the merchandise everywhere tended to take him out of the angle. I just thought it was a somewhat silly criticism to offer, all things considered.

    ReplyDelete
  149. You know, after he's done breaking Cena... Wyatt is coming after you... FOLLOW THE BUZZARDS!!!

  150. As others have stated, this is Cena's gimmick. It would be weird for him to just abandon that.

Most wrestlers seem to be more about their spot and/or money, especially Foley. So this seems kind of sketch to me.

  151. And again, it's not like Wyatt advertised a super serious/creepy moment, so Cena would say "Ok, I'm ready for anything, so here I am in super serial gear". Wyatt's chorus was a surprise. Cena was doing his regular Cena interview in regular Cena gear. Kayfabe wise, he had no reason to think otherwise really.

  152. I'm starting to think that my idea of a revitalization of the Two-Man Power Trip program, with Cena in the Austin role, makes more and more sense every day. I mean, who knows what's "best for business" than Cena? (I know, Cena's never turning heel ever, but it's still a fun idea imagining Cena and HHH as power heels in the WWE.)

  153. If Wyatt wins Sunday, chances we get a "Hogan in black" moment for Cena, like WCW in 1995, during the Hogan/Dungeon feud?

  154. Foley is the reason wrestlers write books now.

  155. You must be a huge David Arquette fan then.

  156. I CAN see you. YOU'RE WEARING NEON! time to go back to the camo jorts.

  157. But ratings during Austin's time were 3x what they were during Cena's run, and Austin's probably STILL selling t-shirts. I'd bet some money that Cena's merch hasn't overtaken Austin just yet.

  158. Maybe you've discussed this before and I missed it, but what is it about the Wyatt gimmick that you can't stand? Can you elaborate? Full disclosure: I love the gimmick, so I'm curious to hear the other side of it.

  159. And Cena never brushed his mouth like Colgate.

  161. This is the guy that used to bring his book to the ring with him right?

  162. Would have been interesting to see a one dozen AA.

  163. When you fell off of a cell and sacrificed your body year after year, yeah, I'd say he's bitter.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Who's buying his shit anyway? I'm pushing 30, so I know it's not supposed to appeal to me, but even as a teenager I wouldn't wear that lame shit.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Yet he looks like he lives in a normal middle class area.

    ReplyDelete
  166. He also did mostly comedy bits.

    ReplyDelete
  167. "He wore a dirty flannel shirt to the ring and lit a barbed wire baseball bat on fire!"

    ReplyDelete
  168. yeah, and when Mankind "turned" into Cactus Jack on Smackdown in 2000, it was just a way to put that old school Cactus Jack shirt on shopzone and advertise it, amirite?

  169. The problem with Cena is, nothing to do with him has consequences. He lost to Rock in Miami, sits on the ramp, shell-shocked. We think, 'OK, maybe something different is happening here'. Then the next night, he brushes it off. Gets destroyed by Lesnar-brushes it off. Loses to BIG JOHNNY of all people? No worries.

For every time he cuts a good, serious promo, there's the photoshop crap and 'comedy' promos to balance it out. It's like they're so worried about the kids not watching because their hero is in trouble, they have Cena almost wink to the camera saying 'everything is all right, these guys can't harm me'. Like this week's RAW- he's shocked to the core by Wyatt's actions with the children at the start of the show, but by the end, he's making donkey jokes and laughing it off.

  170. "Apart from letting me beat him three PPVs in a row, going face first into thumbtacks, and falling through the Hell In A Cell, what did Foley ever do for me?"

    ReplyDelete
  171. I remember him saying in an interview with 20/20 or one pf those shows that he thinks the physical sacrifices he's made have been worth it. I know he's made a lot of money, but I wonder what he would say now.

    ReplyDelete
  172. If Cena's final promo was just a determined, "I'm not going to let them get to me, I'll get Bray at Extreme Rules," that'd be fine. It's selling the show, and Cena can portray being a little shaken by not broken by Wyatt's actions. Adding in the donkey jokes, however, ruined the whole thing.

I really don't understand WWE's reluctance to make Cena vulnerable even for a bit. Are they worried his young fans are that fickle? Since Cena almost always wins in the end anyway, surely the kids will stick around to see if their hero can overcome this latest obstacle.

  173. I never understood this complaint. Is Cena supposed to cry after he loses? Is he supposed to quit because the emotional trauma of losing a match is just too much? Don't 99.9% of pro athletes just brush off losses, and focus on the next game/fight?

    ReplyDelete
  174. John Cena is the Justin Beiber of music. If they don't constantly portray him as being a big deal and the best of the best he'd be quickly forgotten about.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Well Scott Hall made a great point in a shoot interview a few years ago. To paraphrase "If you act like you're a big deal, people will treat you like a big deal".

  178. As a side note, I do find it hilarious that Graham midway puts on the reading glasses as if this is serious literature he's about to speak.

  179. I doubt that a cena sells so much and has for so long. I think anyone saying Cena hasn't sold more is just an old guy not wanting to accept someone took down the former top dog. Austin was on top from 97-01 and it was only the second half of 97 he became the sensation that we all remember. He was out for over a year and anyone out of the spotlight sees sales drop some combined with the Rock becoming just as over as Austin and some of those t shirts Austin would have sold people bought Rock shirts with that money. And then of course he was a heel for a year. Cena sells FIVE times more merchandise than the number two spot those are insane numbers and I'm sure having been the top guy for 11 years and having way more merchandise options he overtook Austin long ago.
