Rhodes Bros

Seriously, how do you explain what's happened to the Rhodes bros? Goldie came back and was looking better than ever, both bros were over, the tag division was picking up... and then all of a sudden they've got nothing going on and are a non-factor in the Mania battle royale. Is there some kind of explanation for this? I'd understand if it was some young buck that they thought maybe they were pushing too hard too soon and wanted to pull back the reins a bit but this is Goldust ffs. And Cody. So what gives?

I think it's basically just Vince had the idea to team them up and then do the split for Wrestlemania, but they got over too strong as a team and never set up the split and thus Vince lost interest in them like anything else that happens lower than the main event.  So really, you could make a case that Goldust fucked over his brother's career by getting over.  It's kind of a ridiculous situation because god knows they never should have dropped those belts in the first place, or at least should have been the ones to drop it to the Usos in something more meaningful than the bullshit match at the Rumble.

I don't understand why the WWE just doesn't assign a group of the writers to Handel the midcard and lower (including the tag division) and just let them be. Maybe give them a few wrestlers they want to push but past that let them do mostly whatever they want with no interference from Vince. Tell them to come up for storylines that can be played out on RAW including blowoffs. I think that could make at least an hour or so of RAW more interesting.

I so miss solid midcard storylines, esspecially with the titles involved.

The midcarders would get over then. Who would be left to job out to Del Rio?

  3. I've been saying for years they should split the writing duties up into divisions: world title and main event, tag, divas, mid-card, etc.

good ol fashion jobbers. And there are plenty of guys who I think could get over as midacrders, have solid storylines but still not reach that next level of being a main eventer. The card is full of those guys. Why not give them a good story to work with instead of doing Kofi vs Dolph for the umpteenth time for no reason. By the way, I know you're being facictous here, just wondering out loud why this isn't already being done.

  5. Its amazing how many times Cody Rhodes has been on the brink of huge things only to be casually cast aside. The guy really should get a main event push with some real weight behind it. He can hold up his end.

And random thought to tie into the stuff below........who here thinks they need a roster expansion? As mentioned they're really running through the same midcard feuds and they've got the same people who always will be just on the cusp and will never cross over unless they bring back the 2nd world title. They're starting it with NXT, but they really need more, especially with these guys like Rusev who aren't gonna uppercard for a few months at least, and Bo, who is seemingly destined to fail unless he becomes a bizarre 4th Wyatt.

  6. Yeah, snag is Rhodes-Goldust would be a mediocre match at best.

Cody is a great tag team wrestler, but his single runs... are not especially memorable. And Goldust works as someone who can take a beating to set up heat spots, but Cody isn't convincing at being vicious enough to make a beating work. Throw in their styles clash, and it'd be Hardy-Hardy all over again.

As positive as some of the stuff WWE has been doing as of late....I'm really intrigued for how the product will be once it's fully out of Vince's mind-changing reins.

What? I loved Cody's Dr. Doom "disfigured" gimmick, and he had some sneaky good matches in them (the fantastic match he had with Rey at WM27, for example).

  9. Noted. Except Rey's size means it's convincing that most heels could get sustained beatdown sections. Not sure Cody beating down Golddust would be convincing or entertaining.

  10. WWE could actually use that loosely as the impetus for an eventual split: Cody gets pissed that older, slower, repeat failure and overall weirdo Goldust's new popularity has turned their team into a mediocre comedy act that nobody takes seriously. Kind of like the Primetime Players breakup, except the writers care about it for more than 3 weeks.

  11. They could easily achieve this by replacing some of the 50/50 booking with old school squash matches. I think most fans would be nostalgic to see local workers get murdered. Ryback and Brodus Clay got to do this initially and it was damn good fun.

  12. Scotts only half right in my opinion.

The Rhodes brothers were never gonna have a long shelf life because...

A big part of what got them over was the nostalgia of seeing Goldust on his A game. Nostalgia acts typically fade in popularity quickly. If you think about it, they've never cut a good promo (except the Dusty promo but that was 100% Dusty) which doesn't help them stay over.

Peple aernt really thrilled to see Cody Rhodes, they were a nostalgia for the Goldust character amd liked the "feel goodness" of the angle.

  13. Official, non disputable ranking of "bros":

Bang bros >>>>>Mario bros >>>>> laker bros > Rhodes bros

  14. I never really saw Cody as a top level guy, but even I'm a bit confused about their sudden de-push. Don't think it's the end of the world, but... It sure did come out of nowhere.

  15. The feud with the NAO killed all their momentum. Them doing all their sing-a-long shit didn't help at all.

  16. I really didn't mind that as it was billed as a fluke win. What really hurt them was the following months, as they basically fell off the face of the earth.

  17. They should get the 9 - 10 slot on RAW that s where the show tends to lose me.

  18. He had a pretty good Falls count Anywhere match with Orton once upon a time on Smackdown. THat one where Orton busted his head open with the monitor

  19. Dustin Rhodes' pure awesomeness should have been enough to keep things going. Dude's such a good worker. Way better than your traditional nostalgia act.
