QOTD 161: Crystal Clear Memories

The cat you see to the left is named after K-fed. Specifically the time K-fed appeared on Raw. The cat's name? "Po-po-popo-Patchwork". Watching Raw, my sister and I kept repeating the "po-po-zow" stuff to each other, and to the cat, who would look back and forth between us confused by these funny human noises. She vanished less than a year later, much like K-Fed's career.

Still, I remember a ton of details about that night, what I ate (Buffalo Wing Dorritos), what I was doing (not going to my professional speaking course), and the fact the house was rarely quiet for a Monday night. This was 8 years ago.

What are some of your personal favorite (or not favorite) wrestling moments where you can remember distinctly where you were, what you were doing, how you were feeling, and so on? Has a non-fan ruined a great moment by being negative about the whole expierence? Are there big moments you remember watching but have a hard time remembering? Small ones you remember perfectly despite their unimportance?

The one moment I remember the most clearly:  what I was doing, who I was with, and how I was feeling? A slice of time where my wrestling fandom and real-life relationships intersected in strange, some would say beautiful way?

My Dad liked the Katie Vick angle.

I normally watch Raw in my bedroom to avoid any and all comments from the peanut gallery, but for whatever reason I was watching Raw on the "Big TV" when my dad came upstairs from the cellar and sat down on the couch as Raw was on.

This gives me immense anxiety. Dad previously bore witness to the PPV where everyone was promised The Kat would take off her lady-clothes, and instead were greeted with the late Mae Young's Bassett Hounds. He always seemed to catch Chyna's obsession with Nut Shots, and found the Jericho vs. Chyna feud "stupid" even though he marveled at Chyna's muscles. He also had a habit of interrupting Wrestlemania main events with "They're not even hitting each other!" - specifically Wrestlemania 17.

So as Katie Vick unfolded in-front of my bewildered eyes I awaited disgust from my dad as Triple H did his triple, mounted the coffin, and ultimately produced grocery store meat to represent the brains he borked out of a dead cheerleader.

Dad would not stop laughing. He thought the whole thing was a riot, from the stupid mask Triple H wore, to the idea of mounting someone in a funeral home - he loved it. He even slapped my knee laughing the way he normally reserves for Golden Girls re-runs and his monthly re-watches of "All of Me" and "The Birdcage".

I remember so many little details of that night - New TV, I didn't have school the next day so I could watch all of Raw, and with my Dad downstairs I figured I'd be able to enjoy Raw in peace. I didn't get too, but at least my Dad seemed to enjoy himself.

If you want more insight into my Dad's thoughts on pro-wrestling, seriously consider mental help. Or click here

  1. On the blogs side of wrestling moments, my favorite was the the Caliber fiasco from a few months back. I remember where I was, I was sitting in the dark at my home with no power or internet.

  2. It begs the question, if one has the network, why would they ever buy a DVD of matches again?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Still remember being there in person for the Bret/Austin match at Mania. Just how it felt, the amazing sensation being there for history as they went at it, the crowd shifting to Austin's side, cheering him along as it went on and will always be bright in my mind to highlight a fantastic show and make me happy as a wrestling fan.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Who the hell is going to buy this exactly if they can get the network for half the price???

Thats a pretty badass cover though I must say.

Not that ill be buying the set, but they missed out a couple good and obvious matches from the mid 80's

Also surprised no WWE matches. The Eddie/JBL bullrope match is a kickass, bloody brawl

  8. I remember sitting at a library table watching a pirated torrent of the Cena/Punk MitB match, on the Tuesday after it happened. I still believed it was some sort of elaborate rib even after checking the dirtsheets, and my jaw dropped in shock when Punk actually got the pin. I disliked Cena a bit more then than I do now, but it was still such a magical moment in hindsight. Then, of course, the roof fell directly inwards a couple months later.

  17. Back in the late 90's, there was WWF, WCW, and ECW PPV's on all the time. One of the friends in our group had a magical black box. We would all gather, order Papa Johns and watch wrestling when it was actually cool and fun and the shows had a sense of urgency. Even crappy WCW. This was usually followed by or preceded with some N64 wrestling. The friend with the magical box also had the Japanese version of World Tour (VPW??). This game had just every wrestler not signed to a WWF contract on its massive roster. Just good times. Time goes to fast.

  25. Considering that not all of the US is broadband, it still makes sense to release DVD sets. Though if one has the Network, you COULD argue about converting the video for another device (iPad, etc.) and taking it where you can't get BB, but that's admittedly cumbersome.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good question. I have a lot of questions about stuff I was thinking at this time.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well, the entire match was a lot of him punching, kicking, and stomping you, heading out the ring to hit on the girls, getting bitchslap-bounced by them (one slap, turn into other slap, repeat a few times), rolling back in to avoid the stinging pain, you roll him up, 1-2-3, get the fuck out with the girls.

How does that make it legitimate? There's no women's pro baseball or hockey league (ever watch women's hockey? It's actually really fun), women's boxing is a joke, so is the WNBA. I'm not opposed to the idea and I'm all for equality and shit, but they probably should have waited until they had enough girls to make a decent division.

Call me sexist if you want, but I'll watch tennis, and not because I want to bang Sharapova, but because I like the sport (I hate men's tennis, it's boring and matches last 6 hours) even it's 2 ugly chicks playing. Seeing 2 women beating the shit out of each other just has no appeal to me. Now, if Rousey took on a guy in her weight class and kick his ass, that would be interesting.

  52. Stranger in the AlpsMay 19, 2014 at 2:12 PM

I remember watching a copy of SummerSlam '92 at a friends house a few days after it happened. My friend Leon was a huge Flair fan and he thought the Savage-Warrior match was awesome just because Flair and Perfect were out playing mind games with these guys, although the match was awesome on it's own merits. We didn't get to Bret Hart-British Bulldog because the tape cut out. It cut out during the Undertaker-Kamala match, just as Kamala was about to come off the top with a big splash. A collective "NNNOOOOOOO" was all that came out. My friends dad was there and he said something rather mean about a 400 pound raccoon or something.

    ReplyDelete
  53. You can if you look at the roster and tell me who the hell Warrior was supposed to make his house show defenses against. Remember, the Savage title run was a disaster, so the goal was to get him *out* of the #1 babyface slot.

  54. Are HHH and Chyna really engaged?

There are conflicting reports on it, with some saying that they are to be married in November. HHH and Chyna themselves deny the rumors (while in character) but they travel together exclusively and are constantly seen together. That, and Chyna's recent trend towards a distinctly feminine look, would seem to indicate that they pair are romantically linked at the least.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It was. I dunno if people interpreted it as serious on my part, but it was never intended that way.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Followed up in the FAQ by this:

Are Steph and HHH really married?

Common sense would seem to cover this one, but to clear it up, no, HHH and Stephanie were not really married in the drive-thru wedding ceremony on RAW. It's merely an angle. And furthermore, Andrew "Test" Martin and Stephanie are not romantically linked in real life to the best of anyone's knowledge.

  73. And of course, one fun little side story:

Scott doesn't mention Missy's trip into the water trough during the aftermath of Cactus/Hammer. I want to say Dusty spilled the beans on one of the Legends shows, but I cannot remember if it was him or someone else.

Long story short, Dusty pulled Cactus and Abby aside before the segment was taped, and basically told them to put Missy in the water during their post-match brawl.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Oh yeah, it would certainly be a disaster. But my point/question is what the 1 million subscribers refers to. If they have 600,000 subscribers now, and all 600,000 people renew, is that 1.2 million subscribers? Or is that still 600,000? And if 1 million is their break even point, do they need to sustain 1 million? Since people are on different cycles, couldn't they theoretically have 1 million one month, and then dip down to 700,000 the next?
I know I'm really simplifying things with these questions but I guess I want to know if they need a sustained subscriber base of 1 million people for the year in order to break even.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It would be an "average" of one million (well, whatever number is the new "break-even point) subscribers per month. And renewals just keep the number steady, they do not increase it.

Any losses would have to be made up, either that month, or at least by the end of the year, to maintain the average. And if anything, they'd need a surge over 1 million to "cover" the average drop that that one bad month would cause.

    ReplyDelete

  82. Some of the great ones from my childhood:
Being sick in 8th grade: I was laying in my bed and turned on Wrestlemania X8 expecting to get scramble vision since I couldn't watch with any friends. Instead, the cable company messed up and I got the whole PPV. I was freaking out during the Hogan-Rock match. It was awesome because I wasn't going to school the next day either.
In fourth grade before Wrestlemania XIV, my friends were doing stupid backyard wrestling shit. I tried climbing my neighbors fence but slipped and got a scar that I still have today.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Have the Extreme Rules numbers even come out yet?

I'd be shocked if any WWE PPV other than Summerslam clears 100K this year. Between the Network and the loss of satellite, there's gonna be a drop.

  85. Wrestlemania XX main event. I was there live. My friend was still pissed because he didn't think Undertaker was deadman enough when he returned so he was being a pissy bitch. When HBK fell out of the ring and Benoit had his back turned to HHH while HHH stood up I remember saying "NO!" and my pissy friend was like "Yup told ya" then when Benoit got him ni the corssface myself and all the smarks around us were yelling "TAP!" and my friend was like "HHH isn't going to tap" and then he did... I and everyone around me jumped up and down like we won the fucking lottery my friend said "Holy shit he tapped" and then when Eddie came out my allergies started acting up a bit... still my favorite wrestling memory ever... even if history hasn't been kind to it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I legitimately think everyone has had those scribble vision moments where it comes it crystal clear just long enough for the best part of the match. It happened to me during Triple H vs. Mick Foley HIAC - I caught the big bump through the cage before it scribbled out again.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't think any of the stuff on that first disk is on the network. Now they're going to have to strike a balance on the DVD sets of having stuff that you can't find on the network, cause why buy it otherwise?

Not that I know of, or Bayless would have posted them. And I don't even see Summerslam getting 100K, just because of losing satellite. A lot of people that have satellite have it because it's all they can get because they live out in the boonies. Hard to get reliable high-speed internet out there, so no network for most of them.

I agree, which is why I thought the network was a bad idea from day one. They should have just expanded the content on 24/7 and found a way to make it more available. Letting people get the PPVs for free or for $10 or however you want to look at... I just don't see how that is going to be profitable. I don't get it.

It's sad to hear that the network is not working out as well as wwe wants but as a wrestling fan, I love this product.

The amount he lost, he probably could have bought the Phoenix Coyotes.

I had to look up how to spell both those last 2 words. Stay in school, kids.

    ReplyDelete
  110. There's Sting, front and center on the box for a WWF product. I knew the day would come but it still seems surreal. Even on the Clash set I thought Flair was more the central figure, since Sting's back was to the audience a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Exactly. They have an opportunity to present is basically every American wrestling that is worthaA fuck. this could be THE wrestling network. Not just wwe. They're botching it.

Hasn't the team been owned by the NHL for years, and you can basically have it for free as long as you assume all the team's debt, or something like that? Or did that situation get cleared up? The same thing kind of happened to the Sabres (fuck you, Rigas!) and the a couple other teams over the years in other sports.

Only reason I asked is I'm a curious person by nature and name dropping the Coyotes seemed incredibly random to me lol

--Bret winning the title at Wrestlemania X

  132. Yeah I expect a price increase but I'm hoping it doesn't get to the 14.99 mark because that is past my limit on what I want to pay monthly on the network and I feel a lot of people are in the same boat as to that line of thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I was referring to new fans to drive to the network, but you may be correct either way.

Just because it reminds me of the Sabres thing, it was obviously a big deal here. The league had to step in and take over the team because the owner, John Rigas (of Adelpiha Cable) and his 2 kids were busted in a massive banking scandal that sent them to prison and totally bankrupted the team. Tom Gollisano (owner of Paychex, if you've ever had a legit job in the U.S. he's had a small cut) immediately stepped in and bought the team for something like $15 million, plus a promissory note of about the same amount, but he also had to be responsible for the $150 million or so debt those Rigas assholes racked up. The team was always profitable and he sold it to Terry Peguila for $450 million about 4 years ago.* Worked out well for everyone.

*I'm just going by memory here, Google will probably give you more accurate numbers. But that was the basic situation.

They should be sponsored by Cialis. DID YOU KNOW... If you have an erection lasting more than 4 hours you should seek either a prostitute or medical attention immediately. I recommend the prostitute, it's cheaper and they still make house calls.

I just tried sex and tv, it can't be done!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  147. I don't know the specifics about WWE's financial statements, since I haven't seen them as I'm not a stockholder, but generally companies will budget for stuff like this. Let's say WWE thought they could get 700,000 subscribers before the end of the six month period, and thought (read:guessed) that maybe 100,000 people wouldn't renew (from the people who signed up originally), and so on. So, their numbers may be are off, but they are at least trying to account for those numbers.

A man should always trade wrestling for sex. At least you didn't have Bizarre Foods on or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I've always felt the Network was a bad idea. The product just isn't hot right now and I always had questions about whether it was really financially viable. I'm waiting on when it goes international, though, to really see if this thing will work or fail.

i also was watching the tv screen when the rock came back!

    ReplyDelete
  152. Didn't they tape Legends House years ago?

    ReplyDelete
  153. And the problem there (at least with giving less stuff) is that now that they've given a ton initially, they risk making people angry by reducing content. The other content problem is they have to fill 24 hours of programming on the Network and there is only so many times you can replay Extreme Rules 2012 or whatever.

A price increase is coming, but they also need to be careful with that since Netflix is like $8.47 a month for live streaming and they are only increasing theirs by $1. If WWE goes over $15 or so then they are going to be hurting. I'd argue for the price increase to happen before the next WrestleMania, but not before the next 6 month re-up period.

    ReplyDelete
  154. similar to this I've never, ever completed the movie Love Actually cause I actually always end up making love at the part where Liam Neeson is all "You know what laddeh! Tell her how you feel" or something.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I think, at the very least, you're going to see them add another tier of pricing, where Royal Rumble, WM, and Summerslam are included.

Someone suggested on here a while back something like $12.99 for twelve months, $14.99 for six months, or $19.99 per month. I think we might see something like that.

  157. Agree 100% with this. I liked 24/7 when I had cable. They could have launched a better on-demand service for their archives or something and made money on the side. No reason to cannibalize their DVD or PPV revenue at all.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryMay 19, 2014 at 3:58 PM

I dunno man, we'll see when the ER numbers come out. I think they'll be pretty ugly, though that was a really weak card to begin with. I still say they should have just had Orton come out and say "I was the champ, and you didn't beat me at WM" and just have Bryan say back "I will at ER!" and book it from there. Who the fuck is paying to see a card with fucking Kane in the main?

So yeah, I guess we're not there yet. MITB and Summerslam, those numbers will tell us the real story.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I hear you on that. I guarantee you the company won't admit it as such at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Vince won't be there, but be prepared for some snide comments from Cole, Lawler, and JBL about that kinda stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I can't believe the BOD isn't blowing up upon the biggest announcement of the day...Rosa Mendes is joining the cast of Total Divas for season 3!

    Seriously, she's still employed?

    ReplyDelete
  162. I'd be interested to know just how long the plan was for a streaming service. It feels very much like they promised a TV channel for years and when that didn't work out they jumped on this idea assuming no one would notice the difference and without much of a look into how much it would really cost.

I've a feeling that streaming was not at all their original plan.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Of course they'll be ugly, that's not the point at all.

People are talking like the PPV number will go from 80 Million to nothing overnight.

    I'm simply saying it wont.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Of course it wasn't their original plan. Hell it wasn't even Plan B.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I like the network as a long term plan, but there was no business need to rush it. Get all your financial ducks in a row first, then launch.

Either that or launch a secondary stock offering when it was above $25 to give them a cash cushion to weather the storm.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Yeah, I am starting to think they saw the success of Netflix and in their infinite wisdom said "We're WWE. We have TONS of people that love us! We can blow them out of the water!" Remember, these people think they are on par with Hollywood and such, so it is not shocking to me that they rushed this idea through. Since reports say the underlings are afraid to speak up in front of Vince and others, I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least ONE person in the room that was like "well, this is a bad idea for a, b, c, etc." but didn't say anything.

    ReplyDelete
  167. You know, someone else mentioned these same things and these are very interesting points. The TV channel likely would've been more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  168. The matches on Disc 1 that have "exclusive commentary" are all matches from house shows that were filmed but didn't air on TV, so the matches had no commentary. Dusty's DVD from 2006 has a cage match between him and Blanchard with no announcers that's from the same July 6, 1985 show as the Flair/Koloff match on this Bash set.

    ReplyDelete
  169. IF (and it's still a big if because we don't know what the international numbers will look like) the Network fails, how will that impact WWE going forward? Clearly, the pay-per-view would be in bad shape, but that would probably tank the stock further, no?

    ReplyDelete
  170. No.

    Drastic reduction in sales? Yes.

Even kill the DVD revenue. This would work... IF they weren't showing the PPVs on there. I mean, if we got someone here that knows finance, feel free to explain to me how that is supposed to make money.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I think that price would depress numbers further, no? I just couldn't see myself paying $14.99 for a wrestling network. That's like the cost of 2 Netflix subscriptions!

    ReplyDelete

Do exactly what you're doing now, but don't show the PPVs for free (subscribers should get a hefty discount) and don't even bother pissing away money on some reality TV horseshit. I mean, I never seen Legends House, but I like the concept, so keep that if it's any good, but otherwise fuck that. That's pretty much it.

    ReplyDelete

WWE Network is becoming the new XFL in failed ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  190. People love watching trainwrecks and that is exactly what Legends House is. I tried watching one episode with my dad and gave up on it 25 minutes into the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  191. It absolutely wasn't.

Vince originally wanted the Network to be a channel with a fixed programming schedule that could be packaged in with the "sports" lineups for cable/satellite providers.

It wasn't until every provider gave him a firm and resounding "NO, STOP ASKING" that he started to think about on-demand streaming.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I honestly think it's as simple as they overestimated how many people who watch Raw would be willing to spend $10 a month on the network. I could see them thinking, "It's only ten dollars," but they vastly overestimated what WWE meant to fans, in terms of entertainment value. Plus, add in the technological barrier many people have we've discussed on here before.
