hey scott! When Barry Windham left the wwe abruptly at end of 85, his team with Mike Rotundo was one of hottest acts in the company. After losing to Beefcake and Valentine, they started the angle where Barry was recovering from being blinded and were set to resume the feud with the dream team. If Barry doesnt bolt, would they have blown the feud off at Mania 2? All signs pointed that direction until Barry bolted.
I don't know, Barry seemed to be pretty anxious to get back to the loving embrace of Dusty's protection and booking. The WWF never was a really good fit for him and never seemed super-comfortable there. The cigar angle seemed more like a blowoff of the character to me.
It seemed like there was more coming because Spivey was tossed into a team with Rotundo as Windham 2.0 and then Rotundo left and that was that.
ReplyDeleteIt's just so weird seeing Windham not in NWA/WCW... for any of those stints.
ReplyDeleteRotunda(o) did one of those where are they now things for the WWE website. They asked why he and Windham quit and he didn't have an answer. He honestly doesn't know why. Guess that's just how they rolled back then.
ReplyDeleteFun Fact: "Real American" was Rotundo and Windham's theme before it was Hogan's.
ReplyDeleteSame. Windham may be the most fitting 'WCW guy' throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteSting says hi.
ReplyDeleteDidn't he run back to CWF first? By then it was on it's last legs before being officially swallowed up by Crockett but maybe he felt a touch of loyalty to try and help stave off the end after the death of Eddie Graham?
ReplyDeleteDuh. Jk ;)
ReplyDeleteKevin Sullivan too after 88
ReplyDeleteHow about Windham taking Orndorff's spot and being the guy turning on Hogan in 86?
ReplyDeleteSting would have fit in nice if he jumped at pretty much any time. Barry Windham switched several times and just never felt right.
ReplyDeleteOh man, that is a hell of an idea I never thought about
ReplyDeleteI read that article also. I'm guessing there was a reason and Cap'n Mike is too smart to say what it is.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to see just because Barry was such a traditional wrestler, not very big/muscular and really not great on the mic. Orndorff was a great choice.
