So how do we feel about the Roman Reigns push? Is it too soon? Think back to 2004, when it was decided to pull the trigger on a Randy Orton title run. This match is a setup for that push, prior to the title match at SummerSlam 2004. It's a **** six-man match, easy.
I often just find myself think, "what's to be done about this Roman Reigns?" Pretty emotional stuff. No water cooler is safe.

ReplyDeleteThat was one of the only reality shows I ever fully committed to, because it was something DIFFERENT for once. Instead of having everyone think it was fake and scripted, they just flat-out said "yeah, it's fake and scripted... EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE GUY, WATCH HIM KNOCK THE CHICK FROM BRIDESMAIDS ON HER ASS!"

ReplyDeleteIt's weird. I remember Evolution having a lot of real good multi-man matches on Raw back in '04, but I hated the overall product so much. And even though the aforementioned matches were good, my dislike for the show hindered my ability to enjoy the main events and I just didn't care.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I'd still feel that way today now that I'm less a cynical jerk when it comes to wrestling and am able to better appreciate the good and filter out the bad.
This was a forgotten and now buried golden era for RAW. The wrestling was great, the booking was great.

Still... Goddamn. Almost everything Benoit did that year was gold.
Well, at the time, Smackdown had the entire show revolving around GM Kurt Angle, WWE Champion JBL, and mute Undertaker.

Wasn't there an 8 man tag around Backlash of that year that had Foley? If so I can remember it being awesome and thinking "this is approaching a "Hot Night in Dallas" for greatest Raw 8 or 10 man tag.

But they freshened up the roster with Luther Reigns, Mordecai, Kenzo Suzuki and "The Reflection of Perfection" Mark Jindrak!

ReplyDeleteJoe Schmo Show was an awesome show, and the second series was arguably even funnier overall. Best of all, the creators stopped after two seasons since they knew the concept would eventually get stale (or impossible to do over and over).
Was kinda hoping this was the match when Orton completely whiffs on RKOing Jericho (on the match finish, no less) and then repeats the spot~~~!

ReplyDeleteRaw was so bad in 2003 that it makes people assume 2004 was an abomination too. But Raw in 2004 had some quality stuff. 2005 as well.

ReplyDeleteThis. 2005 was a highly underrated year for wrestling. I think it was the last time the product felt really exciting for a prolonged period (there have been little tremors here and there since - the lead up to ONS 06 and the accompanying ECW invasion, the Summer of Punk - but nothing as consistently great or fresh). It was the perfect mix of storylines and great in-ring action, and the brand split (briefly) really came into its own. It legitimately felt like two separate, independent companies. Odd that these years seem to have been wiped from WWE consciousness, but given the prominence of Benoit during this period maybe it's not that surprising.

ReplyDeleteI don't think the problem with it is "too soon." He's in the upper card, but he's a clear level below THE main event. To date, he hasn't really been pushed as a single at a level that much above where Ambrose is being pushed. I think a lot of the consternation is on the (probably correct) assumption/"reports" that he's slotted to be that guy at the tippy top, perhaps as soon as WM31, and the juxtaposition to Ambrose being more over and just a better performer right now.
Ambrose is by far my favorite thing about WWE right now, like I'd say is true for a lot of people here, probably. But I'm fine with their respective pushes. Projecting the future, both near and long term, isn't easy. They aren't pushing Reigns based on his exact skill level right now; they're projecting. And I don't think his push is going to screw Ambrose. If Ambrose is clearly better and the fans reject Reigns because of it, it could actually help Dean. The cream rises to the top. The plan wasn't for Bryan, Punk, Austin, Bret, or even Cena to be The Guy. But they made it anyway.
