August Classics: CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar - SummerSlam 2013

OK, so it happened a year ago, therefore it's not a "classic" by the common definition. However, this is a ***** match that will easily be considered one of the best SummerSlam matches ever. The Best vs. The Beast. Due to health and behind the scenes drama, this may possibly be Punk's last great match.

  1. I think I'll pretend this is Punk's last WWE match.

Well, the SS match later isn't bad.

Makes me feel even more glad I went to go see this live bad witness the last great performance from one of my all time favs

  3. Great match but Punk goes after Heyman a little too much. Can't give it 5. I watched this over and over on 24-7

    ReplyDelete
  4. Punk winning would have been detrimental to the wrestling industry for years to come.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That might be the epitome of hyperbole... but the right guy went over.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Originally I wanted to say kill the business forever but I held back.

I obviously stand by heroically my original comment.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It obviously would've been the wrong business decision, but as a standalone match, the underdog face going over would put it in the best match ever discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Brock has had other good matches since then.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That was the whole story of the match though. Punk and Brock didn't really have a compelling issue between them, the issue was between Punk and Heyman, of course he'd try to kill Heyman instead of just trying to pin Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think this is the best match Brock had in any of his runs. Anybody who thinks Bryan couldn't look credible against Brock must have missed last year's Summerslam.

I also like Summerslam '13 better than 2002.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Brock/Eddie is still the winner for me, with Brock/Benoit with Benoit passing out in the Brock Lock in 2nd place.

People rip Brock/Eddie because of Goldberg interfering to set up the "everyone leaves town" match but it's still one of my favorite matches of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  12. A trillion percent disagree. If you watch Punk/Rock again you'll see Punk having serious doing any sort of power basic move due to the immense size difference. So how am I to believe that Punk could Lesnar who is a complete indomnible machine, a legit, real life murderer of men?

Punk beats Taker, Punk beats Rock, OK, we're in the scope of sports entertainment, so it's plausible but not Lesnar. Not ever.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Given Punk's huge ego, I can't help but think that jobbing 4 times in 8 months to part timers (Rock twice, Taker, and Brock) didn't put him in a horrendous place mentally. If the last thing he wanted to do was main event 'Mania, that is a sure fire sign that it was not going to happen. The carrot no longer being there makes it easier for a guy like him to walk away.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't rip Brock/Eddie at all and I think it's great. I just prefer this match. I think it's better worked and tells a better story.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed. I think it's his best match by far, and he's had quite a few other great ones.

Then again, I'm maybe higher on Brock/Punk than most. It's a top 10 all-time match to me.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Brock's time in MMA helped his wrestling and promo game tremendously. The buildup to this match was great and the payoff was excellent and exactly what was called for. Everything was picture perfect. It seems like Heyman stepped in and acted as agent on this one and collaborated with these two to make every little beat correct. I was on the edge of my seat and I almost NEVER am for wrestling anymore, even a very strong match like Bryan/HHH doesn't get that out of me and by the end I legitimately thought Punk was going to win.

It's probably Punk's best match too or one of his top two or three.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If the size difference is your reason, you've made up your mind going in that you refuse to suspend your disbelief and there's no real reason to talk about it any further.

I've watched it again. I've watched it probably 10 times. I think it's one of the best matches I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would say this was Punk's last great match. I personally wouldn't give it 5 stars, but it was a great match.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's not that he jobbed to those guys, it's that they totally fucked up and didn't have The Rock lose to him at Royal Rumble to set up the white hot blowoff of the longest reigning champion in 25 years against the people's champion and Hollywood mega star. It was SO OBVIOUS, it was SO BIG, and they just fucked it up in every way imaginable.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No no, you got it right. This is a classic.

Favorite match of the past 15 years, easy. I can't get enough of it, I must have watched it twenty times since last summer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You're missing the point, sunshine. It's not only the size difference which needs to be taken into account when someone the size of Punk, who is even much smaller than say Bret or Backlund, but it's Lesnar physicality and his legit toughness.

Let me break it down like this. My 6 year old nephew, who doesn't watch much wrestling, said his favorite wrestler was Brock, so I showed him this match. And he couldn't wrap his mind around Punk doing ANY damage to Brock let alone go 25 minutes. This is the sort of thing that is detrimental to the industry IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Summerslam '13 and Wrestlemania 29 flip flop matches, Wrestlemania 29 is all of a sudden in the top 5 Manias ever convo.

The WWE just cooled off so much by the time they put this great card out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I watched that match with five people who are varying degrees of wrestling fan and we had all dropped all pretense of acknowledging it was fake about halfway through it. It crossed over from "hey, this is good!" to "LET'S GO PUNK, KICK HIS FUCKING HEAD OFF!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  24. I almost felt bad that I didn't like Bryan vs. Cena to the extent that Scott did, not that I didn't really like it, but it suffered from having to follow this without much of a buffer.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also bought it as, "Okay, Punk has hit Lesnar with everything but his tour bus, and deep down knows he probably can't win, so he uses the opportunity to get Heyman, for even the morale victory"

    Over-thinking it? Hell yes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Brock is like 270-280 pounds. Punk is plenty of strong enough to lift him and do moves to him. No idea how big Rock is these days. He is thicker than Brock and has less watery muscle mass.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If you saw Brock's last couple MMA fights you know he is definitely vulnerable. And to smaller people.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They should have dragged out Bryan vs. Cena to Night of Champions in hindsight and then did the Orton angle.

Main event of Summerslam could have been Lesnar vs. Punk with Bryan and Cena against Orton and another heel as co-main.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, neat, you were a condescending douche, now I agree!

Your six-year old nephew is not a barometer here. He's just a six-year old. The packed Staples Center crowd sure didn't seem to be finding it detrimental.

If we start booking wrestling matches by who would really win a real fight, we're no longer even talking about the same form of entertainment. Even if you think Brock should be champ solely because he'd really win every fight- which is not only silly but also not the reason he's an amazing heel- he still has to lose eventually. And it'll still be to someone who doesn't look like they physically stand a chance to Lesnar, because we KNOW they don't.

Whether they look like Punk or like Cena, we know they don't have a chance against Brock. So I'm not missing the point at all. If you've decided going in that you aren't going to suspend your disbelief, that's pretty much the end of it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. They have weight classes in MMA. CM punk is significantly smaller than any of his opponents. And CM Punk has zero MMA training.

    ReplyDelete
  31. He even won a title.

    ReplyDelete
  32. When? The Undertaker match was terrible, the Big Show match wasn't a match, and him killing Cena is a fantastic segment but it wasn't really a match.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I admit this joke would have worked better under better circumstances, but I went with it anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Brock is athletic enough to sell a slam and move his body around with great velocity. That's why Angle suplexing him was never seen as ridiculous. But thinking CM Punk trying to German Suplex The Rock, at his current gigantic muscle massed self (not to mention age), doesn't seem like it would work out very well.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Angle, back in his 30s before his body just completely broke down, could throw around Brock without an issue.

If Punk had legitimate wrestling background it would not be hard for him to pick up someone Rock or Brock's size. People ooh and ahh watching someone Frankie Edgar's size pick up someone Gray Maynard's size over their head and run across the ring with him, but that is pretty normal strength for a good wrestler. Punk just doesn't look like a guy who does serious strength training.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If Punk is over 206 pounds by an ounce he and Lesnar would be in the same weight class.

    ReplyDelete
  37. He's still better off then Chris Hero.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Condescending douche!? Where did that come from? Are you really that thin skinned? It's not my fault your a CM Punk fan boy. Seriously though, completely unnessecary name calling. I have a right to my opinion and so do you.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, it's a good thing it's a pro wrestling match.

If you're looking for something that's like MMA, I have just the thing for you: MMA.

    ReplyDelete
  40. No I'm looking for believability, personally speaking. I happen to think Punk beating Lesnar is not believable. MMA is incredibly boring.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Cena's injury ensured that probably wasn't happening.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Punk would be over 206 pounds if he was carrying AJ Lee on his back like a woman-baby.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Telling someone they're missing the point and calling them "sunshine" is being a condescending douche. It's OK. It happens.

    ReplyDelete
  44. What if it was a count out or a DQ?

    ReplyDelete
  45. AJ Lee is the size of like a medium hair cat. Punk was probably 230 or so in his ECW run when he was all bulky. He is a lot bigger than Bryan, people just associate the two and assume he is the same size.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought he was just referencing William Regal.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You are an insanely sensitive boy.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Last time I saw him live it looked like Seth Rollins was twice his size.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think you're under estimating AJ, and overestimating Punk. AJ's probably 120 now, and I doubt Punk ever got over 220.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yeah that's fine, but you really can't do a cop out finish for a such a highly promoted match.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wrestling is fake, sunshine

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's a shame that the crowd never believed in Rey Mysterio and he never got over. Missed opportunity :-(

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yea, but he looks a little stupid. I still love the match but that one part took me out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. People who rip that match for the Goldberg interference are stupid. It didn't end the match, it created the mother of all hope spots and that's what Eddie does. He cheats!

    ReplyDelete
  55. You can really tell that this is where Punk got roughed up and it was pretty clear that he needed a break after this match to give his body any kind rest. So naturally, they immediately feuded him with Ryback, who had already injured him legit less than a year before.

And they wonder why he left and why he doesn't want to come back.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would say the heavy 2012 schedule is what really roughed him up, and the fact that he barely got a decent break after WM29 and got thrown right into this feud certainly didn't help matters.

    Waka waka HEY waka!

    ReplyDelete
  58. One of the biggest head scratchers/personal annoyances in wrestling is how low the buyrate for this show was, considering on paper and in reality this was probably the best summerslam ever.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That size difference mindset...yeah that archaic inability to believe someone of a smaller size can have the skill to beat a bigger man, thats the childish thought that Vince loves to pander to, it sets this business back a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  60. One of my five favorite matches ever. Wouldn't change a thing about it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. and on both counts you'd have been wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I still prefer Punk/Cena at Mitb11 for obvious reasons (it's definitely my favourite WWE match of the modern era) but this was tremendous stuff. I'd give it a 5 snowflake.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Differing opinions, but alas it's something we don't have to think about because Vince did the business right that night.

    ReplyDelete
  64. A year ago already? Damn, time flies. Brilliant match, amazing show.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You responded to my comment that was pretty well spelt out. I think you saw the words 'size difference', became enraged and just clicked reply without really reading what I'm saying. CM Punk is small and lacks the strength compared to someone the size and strength of Brock Lesnar. This is an aspect of the match that needs to be addressed before, during and after the match to come across as realistic and believable, to me specifically, and to many wrestling viewers. I'm not saying the small guy shouldn't beat the big guy, I'm not saying Nash would squash Mysterio in real, but in the case of Lesnar and Punk it is not realistic for Punk to win.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Only if Brock tells Cena "You made me wait, now I'ma make you pay!" Or even better "Im gonna crucify him. Real bad!"

    ReplyDelete
  67. Here's a blog discussion.

  68. Adam "Colorado" CurryAugust 27, 2014 at 4:05 PM

I'd say it's more realistic for Punk to beat Leasnar thanks to him having some MMA training than it is for HHH or Cena to beat him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Adam "Colorado" CurryAugust 27, 2014 at 4:11 PM

    "MMA is incredibly boring."

Agree on that. It has it's moments, but most of the time it's boring as shit.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Adam "Colorado" CurryAugust 27, 2014 at 4:14 PM

I for one think the Taker match wasn't that bad.

    ReplyDelete
  71. EXACTLY! That's why I've said, maybe not in this forum, that Bryan could give Lesnar a believable shot due to his love of shooting and grappling. Now, does Punk have MMA training? I always assumed not. If so, then that should have been brought up leading to their match.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I probably misspoke a slight bit by saying it's boring because, like boxing, if promoted right, involving 2 great personalities, there sometimes isn't anything better than a great MMA or boxing fight because it's an actual sport yadda yadda. However, most times, the bouts I've been hyped for (Rampage v Chuck for example) turn out to be bullshit.

Lower card fights or fights involving guys I don't care about are generally the boring ones I'm talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Adam "Colorado" CurryAugust 27, 2014 at 4:31 PM

I believe Punk has MMA training, though I'm not sure how much.

This has always been my problem with Lesnar to begin with, I'm supposed to believe that the guy that was a former UFC champ has a chance in hell of losing to a pro wrestler?

    ReplyDelete
  74. That would probably work out better for everyone involved. With Roman beating him, Rusev can still bounce back. If Cena is the one to do it, they may as well release Rusev the next day. Cena doesn't need to go over ANYONE at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The perils of a publicly traded company.

    I hate the future.

    ReplyDelete
  76. This would be cool, but don't they want people booing Rollins when he cashes in? This would turn him face (even if just for a night).

    ReplyDelete
  77. It does make sense for Rollins to cash in while Ambrose is "injured." The whole reason he hasn't yet was the whole "I'm gonna show up whenever you try to cash in" deal.

    ReplyDelete
  78. How about, after losing his rematch, the Authority tells Cena he's out of WWE Title shots. So he goes on a rampage and wins BOTH midcard titles. Or wins one but not the other, and feuds with Rusev culminating in a MIDCARD TITLE UNIFICATION MATCH to forever get the midcard title over again (until they make it worthless again).
