Hard Knocks

I hadn't seen this in years. I threw it on randomly at 4 in the morning and couldn't turn it off. Say what you will, it's hard not to like the guy here, if you take it as a small sample size. But damn, it's been 10 years already?

.

Chris Benoit Story Hard Knocks (2)

Comments

  1. My main memory of that disc was having a ton of respect for him refusing to talk in depth about how him and Nancy got together because of the impact on his older kids.

What a decent dad and family man I thought....

  3. He allowed monstrous passions to get the better of him. He was a maniac depressive. And even I will admit that taking all those shots to the head could not have helped. Although, I'm amazed he didn't snap before he snapped. This is a clear case where you can dig and find the psychological and the spiritual ramifications of his life.

Because all hearts of men are corrupt and deserving of hell -- I don't label Chris Beniot -- but I have to ponder was it a simple heat of passion argument turned into the senseless murder of a child and himself? [Note: We know he killed both of them, I'm stating was one an wicked heat of passion killing that happened because of the rumors of threats of divorce -- or was he totally in psychological terms bonkers for other reasons?] I personally can't watch the guy period, but since we are all fallen creatures without a savior -- you can't say that something wouldn't drive you over the edge. I mean what provokes a comedian and moderator of a blog to run across a highway?? What provokes a guy to wipe out himself and his entire family? And what would my reaction have been if it had been Hogan instead of Benoit? That is something my mind pondered since June 27, 2007.

  4. Sins are sins. He's been better off confessing of their sins and become a new creation - old things pass away -- behold -- all things are new. Instead he lived a lie like most do.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hey the dudes my favorite wrestler ever and those two people he killed at the end of his life give the Canadian Crippler gimmick some real cred *shrug*

    ReplyDelete
  6. One of the best early dvd releases by WWE, I need to re-watch it again. RVD's was pretty good as well if I remember right

    ReplyDelete
  7. CruelConnectionNumber2August 28, 2014 at 1:28 PM

No thanks, this dude's legacy is down the toilet. Anyone celebrating his career to me is a sociopath and thinks fake wins and losses in pretend fighting is more important than killing your family.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This is stupid. He had bad brain damage and didn't know what he was doing. Still incredibly fucked up of course but since when is being sick a "sin" (obviously since never because there's no such thing but I think people get my point)

  9. Anyone who can't separate his last actions from the rest of his life can't understand science, probably because their IQs are too low.

  10. I can't wait to get home and watch the rest of the wm20. Started it last night but turned it off right when they introduce Austin as guest ref. Amazing show but a 4.5 hour run time make it a two parter for me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Also most Benoit fans are past the wins and loses part and just need high quality matches so sorry, but this is actually 2x as wrong as I first thought

    ReplyDelete
  12. ^^ Get's uncomfortable watching WWII footage of Hitler

    ReplyDelete
  13. oh geez. Internet guy trying to show how much more OUTRAGED he can be than us. We are all impressed. Move along.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think fg76 is referring to the cheating with Nancy behind Kevin Sullivan's back.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Not as simple as brain damage. Yes that played a part but in retrospect lots of warning signs that he was a big off. His behavior that weekend also shows enough malice and foresight to blow any insanity defense.

Now that said, I believe the uncomfortable truth is a lot more of us are capable of murder that we like to think. Thinks happen in the heat of passion and human nature is a prickly thing. This is pure conjecture on my part (like a bad crime show "renacting" the night of the crime as a possibility of what happened) but I think Benoit and Nancy got in a big fight and he killed her. As I mentioned above I don't think that behavior is that outside the realm of possibility for a shocking amount of humans, particularly in a volatile relationship and with the influence of substance abuse and brain issues. He then panicked and killed his son ahd himself, thinking that would it better. Just my two cents.

Chris Benoit was my hero growing up. In a show that is all gimmicks, it was nice to have one guy that just walked to the ring and handed people's asses to them. I seriously wanted to be just like him. That's all I dreamed of was wrestling. I was 15 when he died and that pretty much shattered my dream. I don't blame wrestling. He took those shots to the head, he killed his family. That was all him. But something about it just made me never want to be in that business in any form.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This had quite a collection of matches on it. I loved that they included some of his NJPW matches because it was my first introduction to that scene. His match with Angle is up there for me as one of the best ever.

    ReplyDelete
  18. the RVD dvd is fun. You can see he's a cool, laid back guy (let the pot jokes ensue) and it's interesting to hear his perspective without a lot of bitterness or ranting. And, despite some of the flaws of his work (weak punches for one), he is certainly unique and IMO just a fun wrestler to watch if you don't try and disect ever part of a match for perfect psychology and selling.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah really who knows but it seems really far out of character for him and his brains were applesauce so I definitely buy that he was out of his mind. I do think that in the right frame of mind (which is way that's usually the most important legal concept) people are capable of doing anything, and being brain damaged with a serious opiate and steroid problem probably is a dangerous place to be.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's a great show but as you said it's too long with some definite filler like the 4-way tag matches. But by my count, it's got a ***** main event, a ****1/2 Angle match, **** Evolution match, and Jericho/Christian is pretty good too. Plus the opener is fun.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Man I maintain to this day Nancy was really underrated on her hotness. During that "Robin Green" run she was like a 9.9

    ReplyDelete
  22. Plus I total forgotten about that awesome pre recorded evolution promo where Orton trashes Foley and rehashes the whole feud.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Awesome promo... tied that whole story together perfectly.

I was there live, long show but worth it at the end.

  24. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarAugust 28, 2014 at 1:48 PM

I still have this DVD somewhere in my pile of wrestling DVDs that I no longer watch because I have the WWE Network. And can we get a moratorium on posting anything about Chris Benoit? Please? Not because I have a problem with his matches, not because I'm morally outraged at what he did. I'm just so sick of the stupid fucking back and forth that goes on EVERY. FUCKING. TIME. Benoit's name is mentioned.

You don't want to watch a Chris Benoit match because you think he's a horrible person and have a moral objection? Fine. But don't proselytize here and hold what you believe to be a morally superior attitude over others who don't feel the same way. Because when you do that, you're no longer the better person. You're just an asshole.

The guy did a shitty thing seven years ago. Do we still need to be asses to each other about all this time later? Fucking hell.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Being a pro wrestler, especially then but even now, is a dangerous and unforgiving business.

    ReplyDelete
  26. And Rock's great promo where he pumps Foley up. That Foley/Orton feud was a great piece of business.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm more mad about him dogging it in some of those late wwecw matches.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What's a more offensive wrestling memory: Benoit's murders or Cousin Juniors career?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarAugust 28, 2014 at 1:53 PM

Lived a lie because he didn't want to publicly discuss a private situation? That's a stretch.

  30. Thanks for ruining that Finger Eleven song for me, WWE.

  32. Stranger in the AlpsAugust 28, 2014 at 1:55 PM

The murder of Cousin Junior's career.

    ReplyDelete
  33. See I would have said Benoit before I read Strangers review. I had no idea Junior was working 10 minute matches on the house show tours, that's a crime against humanity.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He didn't even have the decency to give us that PPV match against Punk. Motherfucker couldn't have just waited one more week???

  36. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarAugust 28, 2014 at 1:59 PM

I mean, really. What a bad choice.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Vince is in a "damned if you do/damned if you don't" with Benoit. Yes, ignoring him has led to fans upset but look at this thread for the results of presenting anything regarding him in a non-biased manner, he'll be slammed for "profiting" or exploiting what happened. They did mention it in the WWE 50th book in a straight matter which is probably best but we can see in this discussion how it's still pretty harsh for many and why it's best WWE still keep hands-off it for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  38. *sigh* well the times have changed. 1pm on a slow ass Thursday and a Benoit thread pops up on the BoD, and it doesn't even hit 100 comments???? Fuck I'm working way harder than I planned today. We neither need more faux smark outrage or better news stories.

Can we also get a thread discussing whether or not WCW was in the right to name a member of the Alliance to End Hulkamania "The Final Solution"?

You know what, people here wouldn't get anywhere near as offended at that as they would a Benoit post.

  44. The Bible says any man who takes a woman who is not his wife commits adultery. We are born, created in God's image to be of one flesh. He disobeyed the rules (Romans 1) and he was left over by a debased mind. Private matters is a secret code word for living in darkness, but Jesus Christ is the light of the world. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God -- He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him and without Him-/ nothing was made that was made.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah but he married Nancy

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is a slow time of year on the BoD in general.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not while I'm carrying the strap Boss!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm sure this won't mean much to all the Benoit fans commenting but Nova trashes Benoit in his shoot, calls him a shitty person long before he murdered his wife and son.

    ReplyDelete
  50. He's just jealous because Nova invented murdering his wife and son, but Benoit gets all the credit.

    ReplyDelete
  51. BoD RAW will pick up on the ratings.
Alexa.com has the BoD up Globally.

    ReplyDelete
  52. His cantankerous personality won me over forever when I read about him throwing Miz out of the locker room.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm surprised Don Muraco is actually watching this documentary, considering it wasn't produced by NJPW.

    ReplyDelete
  54. also he was one of the guys that harassed Muhammad Hassan. Nova said it was near "criminal" what those guys did to him

    ReplyDelete
  55. When JBL does it, asshole. When Benoit does it, applause.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Once again: Nova's just pissed because HE invented harassing Muslims.

    ReplyDelete
  57. not everybody likes everybody. I doubt their is a wrestler not named Steamboat who hasn't been called a shitty person by someone in the business. Benoit had some friends that loved him dearly and thought the world of him. But I also have heard some stories that make the murders not seem that out of left field.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yeah, Benoit also was a dick to one of the referees.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Dock Muraco, whose " I > ****3/4" t-shirt is available on BoD Shopzone

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's all I'm saying. JBL gets crucified, and rightly so, for being a bully but Benoit was just as bad as him.

    ReplyDelete
  61. For not going straight into a Godwin Award, I salute you.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Round of applause for the GOAT...

*wild cheering for Chris Benoit regulating the locker room*

Also I thought JBL only shower raped Palmer Cannon because Cannon literally raped a girl on the road? Isn't that kind of a good thing? Plus to me that wrestlers court thing sounds fun.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ivory did a great description of wrestlers court and how utterly ridiculous it is. Apparently if you bought Undertaker a bottle of bourbon you would be good.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Stranger in the AlpsAugust 28, 2014 at 2:14 PM

Stranger's feelings would be hurt by this comment......
    ......if he had any.

    ReplyDelete
  65. yeah but JBL's a Republican, so for me he's an asshole. :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. JBL murders family:

    Crowd: Booooo!!!!

    Benoit murders family:

    Crowd: Yaaay!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Well one difference is that one guy was an out of this world performer and the other guy was full of suck until the end of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  68. so pretty much like Congress?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarAugust 28, 2014 at 2:15 PM

And I retort by saying confessions aren't a public event. You go to Church for confession, you don't stand up in front of the whole congregation and admit to your sins. You go into a confessional with a priest and do it privately.

You have no idea whether he did that. You have no idea how he lived outside of a few incidents from his life that were made public. And I'm pretty sure it was made pretty clear in the New Testament that Jesus says, "He who is without sin may cast the first stone." Judgment is left to the Lord. Not to people on a wrestling message board.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Crowd: This is Awesome/This is Awesome

    ReplyDelete
  71. Haha, I just realized I wrote Don instead of Dock. Shit, I need to wait till nightfall to start drinking.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yeah it sounds like a silly tounge in cheek thing to kill time and get alcohol

    ReplyDelete
  73. I can't even enjoy Benoit matches anymore ... when you see him diving to the otuside and taking a chair shot, doing a headbutt off the top of a cage ... all I can think about is that probably caused him to murder his family.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Cooler_Than_GuntherAugust 28, 2014 at 2:17 PM

  76. Chris Benoit was a real family man. It's a shame he and his family died in that car accident.

    ReplyDelete
  77. But he wasn't saved when he married her -- and he had already even married before. I can't speak is Nancy ever repented for her sins, but she was married before. This isn't about legalism -- the Pharisees tried the same tricks to see if they get Him to slip -- so they could prove He was a false prophet -- but they could not because He was not.

    ReplyDelete
  94. That was Jimmy Kimmel I believe during David Hasselhof's roast

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm just impressed by his level of OUTRAGE!!! That never gets old.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Who was going over in that match, Benoit?

    ReplyDelete
  97. In the interests of offending more people:

What current wrestler would be the most fun as a new Benoit? I think Bryan would be the most fun to see online reaction but Hornswaggle would be the most fun on the news to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Has nothing to do with their personal lives.

  99. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarAugust 28, 2014 at 2:24 PM

    ReplyDelete
  102. Yep, which makes it all the funnier to hear JR talk about it reverently and super-seriously on his podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Seriously, how strong do you have to be to catch a guy coming off the top rope. That shit is crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  104. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryAugust 28, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Yeah, the move here and the ending at Mania was the best possible result. That it happened despite what was booked instead of because of it between those months was vintage WWE

    ReplyDelete
  105. anyone else think this Nikki vs. Brie deal could result in Bryan and Cena at Wrestlemania?

    ReplyDelete
  106. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryAugust 28, 2014 at 2:55 PM

And honestly, as the top guy, I don't blame him easing up on the throttle on TV because they're fucked if he's hurt, but when it's time to go balls out on PPV, he can be as good as anyone

    ReplyDelete
  107. If you just pretend that Daniel Bryan's storylines from November through February never happened, it's almost perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  108. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryAugust 28, 2014 at 2:56 PM

I don't mind that happening, but I'm out until that match if Brie/Nikki is the feud that starts it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I've been suspecting Bryan vs. Cena at the Rumble for a while now, just because it's the only logical match I can see for both guys if they're truly going with Reigns vs. Lesnar. I don't think it needs to have ANYTHING to do with their significant others, though. Especially with Nikki being the heel, it wouldn't make much sense. But I can see Bryan eliminating Cena from the Rumble and Cena eliminating Bryan from the Chamber to set up a grudge match to be settled at Mania, something like that. I'd be fine with that, honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  110. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryAugust 28, 2014 at 2:58 PM

So where does this rank among the best main event pair of matches ever?

So happy I went to the show. As soon as these matches were booked, I bought a SS ticket in the nosebleeds (crammed next to a guy who was pushing 400 lbs) and made a eight hour trip (each way) to SoCal. So worth it, the crowd was NUCLEAR for Bryan all night

    ReplyDelete
  111. and let's not act like he also hadn't tons of great matches on free tv as well (the first that comes to mind from this year is the one against Cesaro).

    ReplyDelete
  112. It's gotta be right up with HBK/HHH & Rock/Brock from 02. I'm forgetting how XIX ended. Was it Rock/Austin and then Angle/Lesnar? Or was Hogan/Vince in between?

    ReplyDelete
  113. I don't know, dude. Austin was able to hold multiple beers in the air at once. Granted, that had the reward of alcohol at the end, but I believe Austin could wave those flags with the best of 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Flag sure, but no one would have bought Austin holding up a tiny towel before going to the ring. It just wasn't in his make up. He didn't have it in him.

    ReplyDelete
  115. How'd that passing the torch thing work out?
