Ryback Rules?

Hey Scott,

I was wondering, with Rybacks ridiculous and hilarious social media gimmick, how is he not on TV? No heat? Too much heat? What gives?

His latest video in hospital http://youtu.be/rqAOMnTDwQw

P.S Odds on Sting working the Bee gimmick and Undertaker coming back to solve it as Detective Undertaker?

No way, he's at best a Bee-plus player.

Comments

  1. They need to leave Ryback off tv for awhile and bring him back with a Dean Douglas sort of gimmick. Have him wrestles in khakis and wear tweed jackets to the ring.

  2. Ryback might be my favourite character on the roster. Whether it's Big Poppa Pump or the Big Guy, deranged muscleheads are always the best.

  3. Am I seriously the only person on this blog who despises Ryback?

It's not necessarily quirky, but Ryback's personality/humor is not exactly broad. He doesn't exude charisma, but there is some potential to connect with the audience. He was over during his push (even doing his rhyming and/or food themed short promos), but his Twitter personality just hasn't worked (or, to be fair, been developed) on the TV program (I think the only reference to his Twitter "meltdown" was miming typing on a keyboard walking to the ring with Axel (the beanies were great).

Injuries haven't helped (didn't he get sidelined early in the Nexus angle?), nor has his reputation for being sloppy/stiff in the ring. Plus, his strong style doesn't really work in the lower/midcard level.

I do think there is a chance he will return as a Lesnar challenger if Bork defends the title before Rumble.

  5. That was indeed a killer promo..

  6. Yes...sloppy and stiff, and some of the things he does looks ridiculous. It's like he tries to be Goldberg and comes across more like the Warlord.

And yeah, he got hurt early on in the Nexus, as Skip Sheffield. Oddly, he was also a better worker back then...

  7. I don't despise him, but I saw through the act from the beginning.

  8. Ryback was a one trick pony who was only over beating Yoshi Tatsu in 90 second RAW squashes and having the fans chant FEED ME MORE with him... which we would work THREE TIMES into a squash match. The guy had nothing, yet people were clamoring for him to get to the main event. Some on this blog even picked him to end Punk's god-reign.

Be ashamed of yourselves. Ryback is midcard for life... and that's a perfect spot for him.

  9. Wrestling is overdue for a likeable oaf type gym rat who is a bit of an idiot. Like the guys in Pain and Gain, but not as violent or psycho.

The scene where Walberg accidentally kills the guy, and needs a quick pump was hysterical to me. Especially the way the Rock played it; they had just been arguing, but as soon as her starts curling, Rock goes into support/encouragement mode.

Take that kind of a character, have him be a good guy, and I think you have a great babyface.

  10. Yeah, Ryback was mid card for life. He would have been fine as the guy beating Miz for the IC Title, but the moment they threw him in there with Punk, he was done.

  12. Will he get put in cell block bee?

  13. :laughs at how Cole says itl

  14. Funny how the moment he was dropped from the main event is when he found the gimmick that fit him.

  15. If he had the linear belt ever, it would have worked.

  16. Ryback is perfectly fine as a midcard monster/big tag guy.

  17. It could be, and this is just a wild guess, that "guy who tweets weird shit to get the internet nerds talking" isn't really a gimmick that translates well to in-ring appearances.

  18. Punk's god-reign was boring as hell. I did a little dance of victory in my living room when Rocky pinned him (not really).

I liked the bullying gimmick. Put that down.... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! PICK THAT UP!

  20. I hated Ryback and his rise in 2012, but I thought his bully gimmick would've been perfect. I also thought there was potential in having fun with his voracious appetite.

Not everyone can have "5 star matches" and pull out innovative moves in every match. Nor should they, because professional wrestling needs variety to survive. There's plenty of room for a goofy musclehead who only knows a handful of moves but is actually entertaining and connects with the audience. Or a dancing fat guy. Or a skinny white-meat babyface who takes one hell of an asskicking.

    And Orton, too. I guess.
