BoD Sunday NFL Thread

After going 2-2-1 last week, I improved to 4-10-1 on the season, which is sad. Anyway, here are my picks for this week:

Oakland -3.5 vs. Miami
Indianapolis -7.5 vs. Tennessee
Houston -3 vs. Buffalo
Atlanta -3 at. Minnesota
Green Bay -1.5 at Chicago

Comments

  1. Did we go a week without another NFL scandal?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Would Simmons' suspension fall under "NFL scandal?" If not, it looks like Herr Goodell has weathered the current storm. For now.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Eh, the Ray Rice thing will be talked about the entire season anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  4. And once again, I will gladly abstain from making any picks. Mostly because I don't give a shit.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's times like this that make you appreciate Tom Brady - he doesn't beat his wife and/or children.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I always loved Battle Royals, so the idea of a SIXTY-MAN version was fascinating to me. I liked the idea, but actually having three separate rings, all in close-up, was ridiculous. It just doesn't work in practise.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm sure he'll be back next year having learned from his mistakes and we can celebrate his final game as if none of this ever happened - hell, he could even become a commentator!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Only bets I have this week are Atlanta -3 and Indy -7.5
Too many games this week are zero advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't know if it counts seeing as how South Park kept the NFL in the pop culture spotlight another week but yeah, pretty much.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh yeah, Starrcade was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, a guy not in the match anymore could eliminate anyone he wanted to and it'd be legal, except for that one time Vader did it and therefore it doesn't count.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I was more talking about Hogan never going over the top, he was taken out from under the bottom rope.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That we know of.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Didn't he leave a pregnant Bridget Moynighan to shack up with Gisele?

    ReplyDelete
  15. When I was a kid, and discovered WCW, and found the starrcade '95 tape, the anticipation in Friday's last period class was off the charts. Triple threat of Lex, Sting, AND Flair, with the winner getting Macho? Had no clue who was gonna take it (pre Internet)

Once the heel Flair won the triple threat though I sorta knew what was up.

A face Sting vs face Savage match would have been great. Sort of the workrate antithesis of Hogan / Warrior.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If the PPV was still around in 2000, I imagine Russo would have done something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I like your style Sir, I grew up a huge NWA/WCW fan (though I watched WWF too, my weekends were always booked). I LOVED Global, I always turned that on ESPN whenever I got home from school. But BITE YOUR TONGUE about Chamber of Horrors 1991. My Mom taped HH '91 live for me and I've worn that tape out, and the Chamber of Horrors is still watchable and entertaining. The electric chair is incredibly stupid and sours a lot of the match, and if that cage was just a submit or surrender style, it would have been a bloody classic we all remember today. My most watched matches are Bobby Eaton/Terrence Taylor from the aforementioned Havoc '91, my all time favorite match and ***** classic no one ever saw. My other one is Steiners vs Vader/Hughes from Clash 18. Vader, Hughes, and Cactus Jack were my favs growing up and I loved watching them throw each other around in that match.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wait are you saying dreamer is a nobody? Just listen to him talk - he is basically the reason wrestling still exists today

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have the choice between Jets/Lions and Bills/Texans. Why does F1 have to be off this week?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I WISH you died in the WOMB!

It's a good heel line but her delivery was awful. Bonus points for inadvertently encouraging what chants by constantly saying "and you know what?" and pausing every other line.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've probably seen Cactus/HHH from Royal Rumble 2000 more than any other match.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bills challenge a punt spot 3 minutes into the game. Yeah, it was successful, but that's a waste of a challenge that will probably come back to bite them in the ass later.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you mean the racing, I don't know, but I've seen that stuff in person and it gives me anxiety. Yessh.

The games are fucking nutso from what I understand.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Have you been to the new track in Texas? It's supposed to be really nice. Also looks fucking terrifying from the in-car cam. From the start-finish line it looks like you're driving full speed into a 150-foot wall.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yup no thanks. What I've seen is enough for me, and now-a-days I like my autos like I like my British Television. Top Geared.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think I might have had a shot to be a pro racing driver (though not F1-level) if I could have got into it when I was younger, but I'm too old now. Pretty much impossible to get into that shit unless you have rich parents.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've been watching 95 WCW as Scott reviews and I'm complete this era was the peak / prime of Sting. He is just mega over here and doing his best in ring work. The Pillman / Benoit Horsemen are also just fantastic and it's a shame there run was cut criminally short.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rodgers-to-Rodgers. Green Bay not screwing around on offense.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah on my old debate team there was this guy Rich was super into it, and his dad was something of a 'legend' and everyone called him Deke.

I can appreciate the sport, but I'm the kind of guy that turns down the radio while making a left turn so I can focus.

Now if someone wants to go mono-a-mono in a parliamentary style debate, bring that shit on.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Random TJ: I saw on Gawker (I think) yesterday that some asshole stole a $150k diamond and traded it for a $20 bag of weed. Idiot...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ahh nothing like watching Packers-Bears.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I drive like an absolute maniac on public roads, which is a big reason I rarely drive. I have a licence and haven't driven in about 6 months.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ha, I just watched this yesterday while also going through the old Nitros. Sting/Flair is one of the worst in their series, I'd actually agree with Scott's original *** rating because it's still flippin' Flair/Sting. I thought Benoit/Sasaki was **1/2 (that Northern Lights Bomb was NASTY) and the women's tag was **** (that match was the tits, literally and figuratively). The three ring crap was abysmal, but once it got down to one ring, it was entertaining crap with some legit drama: anyone could have won the thing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sting from '92-'95 in general was fucking amazing. He started letting himself go a bit in '96 around the time he began to grow his hair out, both physically and in the ring. It only got worse when he transitioned into Crow Sting (I think I'm the one person who hates Crow Sting). But I'd take pre-nWo Sting over nWo era Sting any day of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bears successfully pull off the rare unintentional fumblerooski

    ReplyDelete
  36. Crow Sting was awesome until he came out missing 20 lbs. of muscle and wearing a ridiculous body suit. Getting destroyed by Hogan for minutes and pinned cleanly didn't help either.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Never underestimate the appeal of a Hillbilly teamed with two midgets.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Sting / Flair match from Nitro right before this is far superior.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey, a man who's down called and left a message for you; he needs to be kicked some more. Why don't you go do that since apparently that's your thing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I've never seen any other women's wrestling come close to the quality of mid-90s Joshi. Then again, I don't know what the state of women's wrestling is today outside of the abysmal WWE Divas division.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yep. Brady's as big of an asshole as anyone out there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. A buddy of mine asked me to walk in the Autism speaks..walk..thing, they do here.

I wanna, but am legitimately concerned by how many people are going to ask me if I'm on the spectrum in round-about ways.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Don't know if anyone else is watching the Bears/Packers game but the refs are having a horrible first 20 minutes. Basically every call they've made on both teams has been somewhere between shaky and "what are they even watching".

    ReplyDelete
  44. I swear, the refs must have a running pool on which crew can call the most penalties in a Bears game

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Miz vs Cena
    Cena vs Big Show
    HHH vs Kane
    Hardcore Holly vs Brock Lesnar
    Vladimir Kovloz vs Undertaker
    Batista vs HHH
    Royal Rumble 2014

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agreed. The Bears took a horrible unsportmen's penalty on a 3rd down stop. Chicago defender may have led with his helmet but the hit was clean.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gutsy onside kick call that clearly caught the Packers off guard. But if you don't recover the kick, ultimately, it will be deemed a stupid move.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am a Titans fan. This is misery.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Another one ive seen a 1000 times Cactus/Hammer from the Clash

    ReplyDelete
  50. C'mon Texans, down 10 points.......DAMN!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Virgil's Gimmick TableSeptember 28, 2014 at 12:12 PM

Don't forget Ric Flair. Inside at least.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The way GB is moving the ball today, it doesn't matter where they're starting.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The second sentence was redundant.

    Still, I'm sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I know it's a running joke at this point (see also: http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2014/08/football-mysteries-the-tennessee-titans.html ) but I honestly don't think I've ever seen anyone else admit to being a Titans fan.

    ReplyDelete
  55. As a Cardinal fan, a very poor choice for head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 17-3. Baby steps!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Its a shame Daniel Bryan got hurt because watching Brock Lesnar destroy him wouldve made sitting through his horrible YES movement worth while....Either way i am glad that for once the WWE is going in the RIGHT direction by building towards a fantastic WM 31 mainevent in Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. There is no doubt that Roman Reigns is the future of the WWE and having him beat Brock at WM would be HUGE, so kudos to the WWE for giving us what we REALLY want. Daniel Bryan can sit at home and milk his injuries so he can make his Total Divas money but the WWE is thriving without him.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Samoa Joe, is that you?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Bob Saget?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Nah Joe is shutting down a buffett somewhere with Kevin Steen

    ReplyDelete
  61. Nah, just someone who'll be sad come January 1st. Because his company of choice will be only remembered in the dustiest and least cared-for history books.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Mankind vs. Taker Hell in a Cell is probably the one I've watched the most. Does that make me sadistic?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was going to say, you looked like that guy who used to suck dick for coke.

    Just saying...

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love coke but ive never sucked anything for it....but hey, takes one to know one

    ReplyDelete
  65. Extant1979 - Ghetto SuperstarSeptember 28, 2014 at 12:21 PM

I know he WON the TV Title on Saturday Night, but him losing it escapes me. And I am way too lazy to bother looking it up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Seth Rollins might end up being Daniel Bryans brother in law because I heard a rumor about Seth trying to get into JJ Bellas skinny jeans after RAW went off the air.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Carolina is done. They have a shit offensive line, no running game (no one healthy, no one worth a damn in 2014), and the defense in the red lone is dead last in the NFL. Their coverage schemes leave open receivers every damn attempt, they don't dare blitz because their secondary can't handle man coverage, and Cam's mobility takes away the last option on the ground. As soon as teams figure out their defensive holes and the nonexistent offensive line, Carolina may not win another game until late November.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I've never heard of that. It's good but not as good as "Fuck It, I'm Goin' Deep!" or "Replace Goodell with a Pineapple in a Top Hat"

    ReplyDelete
  69. It was in WCW wasn't it? I'm sure he dressed up as Sting, and had a match with a dozen other Stings attacking Sting. I could've dreamed it. It sounds stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I still believe in their defense. I think they have one of the best defenses in the league. I still think they can get to 9 or 10 wins this year; if the Saints are weak this year, that whole division could be weak.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Epic Chicago clock management right here. Also the refs screw up one final time before the half. Might be the worst officiated half of football I've seen in my life, no exaggeration.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Melina vs. Alicia Fox.

    ReplyDelete
  73. CruelConnectionNumber2September 28, 2014 at 12:31 PM

Benoit/Sasaki sucked. Sting/Flair was about ***. Main event is atrocious. Very average show.

    ReplyDelete
  74. CruelConnectionNumber2September 28, 2014 at 12:32 PM

    HELL NO.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Their defense, statistically, is middle of the road in both stopping the run and the pass, aren't producing turnovers at the same clip they were in the first two weeks, and are dead last in the red zone. I'm as diehard a fan as there is for Carolina, but I gotta call a spade a spade. This team is too flawed to seriously compete without getting healthy and suddenly finding a running game.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Somehow the Titans are only down 10 at the half, and get the ball back to start the second half. I'll take that.

    ReplyDelete
  77. What a terrible slate of early games.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Damn, that was a badass play from Aaron Rodgers. Too bad it didn't count.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Charlie Weis fired from Kansas, buffets through the state breathe sigh of relief.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Defense is far more average without Greg Hardy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. There's a Jeff Jarrett Bella?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Smitty doesn't believe in their defense. He's made them look foolish today all by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's kinda true. After all, so many legends made their mark beating Dreamer into a bloody, whimpering heap.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Houston needs a quarterback in the worst way.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Jackie. Apparently Jeff liked the swirl.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Way to make a nice, fun charity walk about you.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Didn't he plan to have Tank Abbot win the WCW title in a Battle Royal in early 2000?

    ReplyDelete
  88. There's another sister? I just thought there was a brother.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Come on, we all know Undertaker was a NOBODY until he made Dreamer drink his tobacco spit.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I do believe that's what got him sent home.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I see that "Idiot Cutler" has shown up today.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Looked like Marshall ran the wrong route.

    ReplyDelete
  93. On the strength of this performance, I'd be happy for Miami to play in London every week.

    Against the Raiders.

I just set the Simpsons/FG crossover episode to record on my DVR. I'm just going to assume it will suck, that way if it's even decent I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Speaking of things that suck, the Bills look like shit for the second week in a row. I don't know why people said this team will be any good, it's the same team as last year only with a couple key D players missing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Thanks for reminding me, set it to record too. Didn't know it was going to be a two-parter.

Is there a reason we should be?

    ReplyDelete

    True dat. Well, except Cult.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Gunther the Nasty LoserSeptember 28, 2014 at 1:29 PM

Because it's a game that's on? It's been a game of penalties for all, Ben getting punked, and Brown and Miller being awesome

    ReplyDelete
  102. HBK/Taker in the Cell, the 2004 Royal Rumble match, Benoit/Angle from Royal Rumble '03, and the Michinoku Pro 6-man tag from Barely Legal are mine.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Stick a fork in the Panthers; their season is done.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I recently watched this show too and your ratings are on target.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Adam "Colorado" CurrySeptember 28, 2014 at 1:34 PM

I think there's another regular that lives in Pittsburgh too. There's actually quite a few of us in the I-90/Lake Erie/QEW corridor. Abeyance and a couple others are from Cleveland, there's a couple other from Buffalo, Warne is from Southern Ontario and there's and handful of guys from Toronto.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Adam "Colorado" CurrySeptember 28, 2014 at 1:36 PM

I'm trying to think of a wrestling equivalent of Bills/Texans. What's a match where neither guy is really any good but at least they're trying really hard?

    ReplyDelete
  144. It's amazing to me how the Royal Rumble is my favorite type of match and WWIII is my least favorite. I can't imagine how it was any fun for the people in the arena that had no idea what was happening.. just way too much going on...

    ReplyDelete
  145. Adam "Colorado" CurrySeptember 28, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Is Stanton still out? If so, a no-no against the Marlins shouldn't even count.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I don't know, but the no-no was saved with an "Edmonds catch" by the left fielder to end the game.

    ReplyDelete
  147. The difference between the two is that like all other battle royals, WWIII is almost impossible to follow with all the bodies in the ring at one time.

The Rumble, on the other hand, is spaced out and you rarely get more than a dozen guys in the ring at a time (most times no more than, what? Half a dozen?), so you can give a lot of guys a chance to shine throughout the match.

    ReplyDelete
  148. YankeesHoganTripleHFanSeptember 28, 2014 at 1:57 PM

Hogan kind of had a point about not wanting to put Sting over at Starrcade. I mean the guy didn't wrestle for a year, and didn't even have to travel much. He couldn't have hit the gym a few days a week?

    ReplyDelete
  149. Has BoD commenter Hold that 10 for Johnny B. Bad weighed in on this one?

    and surprise entrants.

    ReplyDelete
  152. This would have been a great place to start a Hogan heel turn: Hogan's recent dark side stuff, his lying about Savage's arm, and his tantrum about the end of the battle royal + fans reaction. But I guess that would have all made too much sense.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  157. Adam "Colorado" CurrySeptember 28, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Random thought: if you hit a guy in the head you should immediately be ejected and suspended, intentional or not. If you want to send a message and plunk a guy then hit him in the back. But if you have enough control to make the bigs, you should have enough control to not crush a guy's face.

As a former HS pitcher, I will disagree. Sometimes, it just gets away from you, even for big leaguers.

Hogan vs Savage from WM 5. I wore that tape OUT. Then I bought another one.

  162. Ugh, the only afternoon game we get in this market is Jacksonville against San Diego. Kill me.

Sports bonanza today, I've been taking in RedZone, Tigers winning the division (fantastic duel between Price and Kyle Gibson), Jeter's last game, and Zimmermann's no-no.

  170. And Pez Whatley. I think that's everyone.

If it's an accident, just a couple games or your next start. If it's intentional you should be gone for the rest of the season. But I see your point, once as a kid I accidentally ripped someone's face open playing hockey with a high stick, and I had no idea he was even there.

FOX moving its pre-WS postseason coverage to FS1 is bullshit. I mean, I know they'e trying to solidify that network, but I don't get it at the moment, so fuck it.

  173. One of my siblings threw me down the steps as a result.

In her defense, she was only 5 at the time and I was 13. She was stronger than she looked.

  174. So you go and watch another New Yorker lose?

  175. I loved this show as a kid and watched it over and over at my best friend's house. We were blown away by the tag match and used to watch that all the time. The Battle Royal is obviously bad, but as a spectacle it was cool to see so many people out there at once. I also loved that Savage won since I had turned on Hogan pretty hard once he joined wcw. Definitely a favorite of mine.

A SP is throwing 3,000+ pitches a year over the course of the season, law of averages pretty much dictates a pitch is going to wildly miss its mark at some point, esp. when factoring in fatigue and trying to get an extra giddup on a pitch in a high-leverage situation. If everyone could avoid plunking dudes in the hands or head, they would.

I have two younger sisters. One was strong. she caught you wrong you would be in pain, but couldn't handle a simple shove. The other was tough. Couldn't hurt me but she took many a chokeslam and Sharpshooter and came back for more.
