Bray Wyatt, God Complexes and (Breakable) Glass Ceilings

http://placetobenation.com/bray-wyatt-god-complexes-and-breakable-glass-ceilings/

Here's the thing: I hate the headline, but Brad and Justin at P2B decided to keep it. So depending on how you feel about it, I'm either throwing them or myself under the bus. Because I came up with it, and then I thought it was terrible.

But they're probably right. I suck at headlines, so if I ever wrote a decent one I probably would think it's awful. Anyway, I've had a busy as hell summer so this is the first thing I've written in probably two or three months. Hope everyone likes it.

  1. The real problem with Bray Wyatt is that he's essentially a "Heel of the Month" who comes in to dominate for a few months, then he competes against the top face, gets defeated then moves down the card. With Roman Reigns as the "Chosen One" who supposed to get anointed at Wrestlemania, Bray Wyatt is in a holding pattern until he could face Reigns. Since he already faced Cena there is no one else for him to face until Reigns becomes champion but with the midcard so devalued there are no real options that could keep him in the mix as a credible threat until he gets his shot at the WWE championship.

The "Heel of the Month" worked during a time when someone could disappear after their main event slot but it doesn't work so well when there are no other real options.

  2. I always like when espn does super misleading or inflammatory headlines. ROSE OUT WITH KNEE INJURY is just Rose taking it easy in a FIBA practice etc

You could have called it WYATT MUST ADAPT OR DIE or something crazy like that.

Also, as I think I've mentioned once or twice I don't want get the gimmick and I don't think he's a good wrestler but I have to say, the dude with the black hair and beard is fucking awesome and I hope he gets a chance to shine on his own soon. Fantastic in the ring IMO, great facials and presence. Pretty awesome.

  3. I like when ESPN shows their pettiness whenever they lose the TV rights to a particular sport.

10 years ago for example, they pretty heavily covered hockey.
Now, hockey has had a resurgence thanks partially to NBC and they barely even mention it (clearly not bitter about losing those TV rights, eh?).

And NASCAR went from getting heavy coverage on SportsCenter and numerous recap shows and timeslots on ESPN2 to barely getting mentioned at all and oh yeah, losing all those recap shows and timeslots even though they still have a few months left on the deal (clearly not showing bitterness about losing those TV rights, no siree).

Just wait until they lose the NBA deal to CBS in two years, you'll barely hear a thing about Lebron or Kobe on SportsCenter as a result.

  4. Sad thing is, he could have been so much more than that. But like with anyone on this roster not named John Cena, the writers got bored with him.

  5. The monopoly ESPN/Disney has not only on sports, but basically all cable/satellite TV options... ugh. I really really wish sports fans would just stop watching ESPN, and stop giving them $$$.

  6. And miss all the live sports they carry?

  7. The real problem with Bray is that his promos are all the same thing over and over again and his feuds all feel like deja-vu

  8. I like how objective Fox Sports Live is to all sports, especially hockey (in spite of even FOX knowing that the NHL will never return to FOX). It just makes ESPN's pettiness stand out even more.

  9. Pretty solid article. Not sure I agree entirely, but you make a good point.

  10. It's nowhere near as much as it was in the past (BOTH recent and distant)... gotta fit "FUCKING RETARD TALKING HEADS SHOUT STUPID SHIT FOR OTHER RETARDS AMUSEMENT!" show number 9035278 into the rotation after all.

Oh, and spend a shitton of money on a set that adds NOTHING to actual news, it just looks fancier.

  11. They still show a fuckton of college football, basketball, NBA, baseball, etc. As long as they have all those things I'll be watching. I ignore what I don't want to see.

  12. I think this is mostly true, and it goes back to what the product's biggest problem (in my mind, unquestionably) is: too many hours of the same people being on our TV every week. I'm so annoyed when people say that the WWE doesn't make or push new people- or even know how to- because this is a lazy trope that's just objectively untrue. The problem is they have little ability to sustain any aura around a group like the Wyatts even though they're pretty goddamn awesome, because we see too much of them.

  13. Good article with some interesting things to think about.

I've said this a few times before (and probably has been echoed on this blog many times as well), Bray Wyatt would be much more effective as a character if he consistently did more evil things. He talks a lot, but rarely backs it up with action (to the level he threatens it). Perfect example was Monday night, after beating Jericho in the cage match, he brings him back in the middle of the ring....does he beat him senseless with a chair? throw his head into the steel cage 10 or 20 times? use random weapons underneath the ring to destroy him? No, all he does is hit his finisher one time, and that's it. For someone as "evil" as Bray, it seemed like a very underwhelming beat down. Now contrast that to Randy Orton, who actually had a believable beat down of Jericho in the locker room.

Now I don't know if he's not allowed to have as vicious beat downs as Randy Orton, but if I was just a mark who viewed the program strictly for what it is, I would say Bray talks a big game, but doesn't back it up, vs Randy Orton, who is not nearly as gifted on the mic, but his actions more than back it up. Just my two cents.
