Heenan

Scott:

Long time reader, blah, blah, blah…I was re-watching the footage from Hogan's in ring heel turn and was wondering – did Bobby Heenan get any heat for basically giving away the turn?...I realize it was only seconds before it happened, but still…always been curious.

Thanks and keep up the good work,

Rich P.

The Observer certainly doesn't say anything about it at the time, but you'll notice it's edited out of all the WWE's airings of the angle.  So I dunno.

  1. Bobby's reaction makes the entire angle more believable. Why? Because Bobby was acting like Bobby and everyone reacted accordingly. Heenan thinking Hogan was completely on the up-and-up would have made the turn MORE obvious than "BUT WHOSE SIDE IS HE ON?!"

  2. If you notice, he says it twice...once when Hogan comes down the aisle and the other when Hulk is in the ring (which Tony tries to hush him about). Not sure what the hell Heenan was trying to do there but he did say that he used to drink quite a bit before working in WCW.

  3. Bobby's reaction was kind of like when Ventura would rant about Hogan using a back scratch, bite or eye rake. It was great, and made the moment much more believable

  4. Heenan hated Hogan for years and years on-screen, of course he would question the guy's integrity and motive.

  5. By the way... how freaking great was Tony Schiavone during that match and angle? He's been scrutinized for his forced shilling, but good Lord would I ever rather have him calling RAW right now than Michael Cole.

  6. I thought those guys didn't know ahead of time who it was. I guess you would assume with him coming down that he was the guy given the moment. But Bobby was a long time Hulk hater so I thought it made sense. The other thing great about that angle was how many websites said after the fact that they predicted there was basically a 100% chance it was him and I don't recall that being true at all. Even right after it happened, I remember thinking they were all full of it.

  7. TJ: Reigns had emergency surgery for a hernia. No idea yet how long he will be out.

  8. Tony was really good. He eventually became a parody though, around the same time WCW became one.

  9. Yeah, Tony was awesome in the moment..and the "Go to hell" line was perfect. It sounded like an off the cuff remark from a guy who had just been stabbed in the back by a good friend.

  10. That's probably a 4-week recovery. Maybe not a bad thing to keep him off TV for a few weeks to freshen him up.

  11. Definitely a (minor) botch by Heenan to say that. Every other time he questioned Hogan's motives, it was usually pretty funny. But here, I think he just forgot that this wasn't supposed to be a Hogan entrance like all the other Hogan entrances. That line is always edited out of the commentary on documentaries and highlight videos.

  12. I hope everyone realizes that although Bobby is adored, he was notorious for drinking and being drunk while on commentary. It's possible he was during this screwup.

  13. Well good thing WWE did the Reigns v. Rollins match on RAW. Smart booking, Vince.

I thought the drinking started later...
