Muraco's Monday Morning Matches of the Week (9/15/14)

Every Monday morning it seems I'm compelled to do this, and suggest a couple good ones, so allow me to abandon any previous inhibitions and offer the best of the previous week. The plan is to keep anything recommendable to a chronological, rhythmic theme. So here we go, really good stuff that aired for the first time this week...

BJW: Daisuke Sekimoto vs. Takashi Sugiura - [8/31/14]
Not that I thought this wouldn't be great, I just didn't know it was going to be as great as it ended up being. The thumbnail pretty much says it all.

DG: Millennials (T-Hawk & Eita) vs. Osaka 06 (CIMA & Gamma) - [9/9/14]
Killer tag match, very easy to just kick back and lose yourself in it.. Too many moves? Sure. No selling? Yeah, maybe. Sick match? You bet'cha!

DG: Flamita (c) vs. Kzy - [9/9/14]
Ha, this is the match that had to follow that last one. Give these guys some credit for actually getting the crowd back into the show after that last tag match. This was another great match, LIVE from the very last Dragon Gate iPPV on Ustream.

  4. Love these reviews. I'm glad you made the cut.

  5. Bring back Meekin - a lot of what makes this blog great is the comment section and it's usually at its finest underneath Meekin's posts

    ReplyDelete
  6. Just getting rid of Meekin was huge. It's nothing against the guy, but FFS, he needed an editor. Poehling wasn't bad, but I just don't think 411-type columns fit here.

  7. That sounds like Commie talk to me. This is America the home of the free! And also Canada home of the almost as free!

  8. Leaving Danielle on board is a huge mistake. I'm disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I said this in the forums but I can't wait for Bob to randomly show up again. "Fuck, we forget he existed so we forgot to cut him!"

    ReplyDelete
  10. Eh it's something different and easily ignorable. It's not like a black hole of terribleness that drags everybody into it like Meekin.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Shit, I don't get it either.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think I remember watching this show. I suppose it goes to show you the level of quality when that's all I can come up with.

    ReplyDelete
  13. They had some stupid male cheerleaders headlining several big PPVs. If that's not hurting I don't know.

DX didn't needed 100 stupid jobbers, they needed maybe 2-3 good heel guys as opponents and there were still some midcarders to job for them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah. I guess you're right. I guess it's time to just leave forever.

    /meltdown

  15. I can't wait to watch more chest slapping as The Flying Sushi-nator battles Ichiro PooPooshu!

  16. Big deal, no - the product survived and all, but from what I remember about the squad it was just totally stupid. What was the point of them anyway? I pretty much checked out from the product at this point so I don't remember specifics, I really just stayed connected through online reading.

That made me laugh for some reason.

  18. Apparently, Vince had a run-in with a male cheerleading team at some point.
    (Ziggler walks into Vince's office)
"Alright, pal-we've got a gimmick for you! You and those other four OVW shmucks are going to be cheerleaders! Everyone hates cheerleaders!"
    (Ziggler sighs)

  19. Edge and Orton were much better heel counterparts later in 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I heart Rated R Superstar 2006 skankariffic LIta to be specific. Most other versions of the character don't do much for me.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I MISS JOBBERS, AND JOBBER RELATED SHOWS! (needed to get that off my chest).

Except for you being his ghost, love the name by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It had a really good lineup. Cena vs. Edge in what should have been a blowoff for the year's hottest feud, Batista vs. Booker had real life heat behind it, Flair vs. Foley was intriguing (and a smark dream match) as was Orton vs Hogan. Plus DX vs the McMahons promised to be a Russoriffic match.

    ReplyDelete
  24. One could argue 3 Count, but one would be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The first sign of Vince's forthcoming senility?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Carlito is one of those guys, much like Kennedy, that I'm amazed it took them as long as it did to give up on. They never did ANYTHING worthwhile, but Vince just kept giving them chances.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I liked Greg the Bunny, but I'm admittedly biased towards Seth Green and puppets.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not since 1995/1996 Shawn Michaels has someone brought it each and every pay per view like Lita and her boobs did in 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And Carlito WANTED them to give up on him, like two years straight he tried to get out of his contract but Vince convinced him to hang in there.

Better wrestler than any current Diva on the roster, including AJ and Paige.

    Wasn't the main event.

  32. CruelConnectionNumber2September 15, 2014 at 10:19 AM

    Oh, tag!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I remember nothing about this time period. Why was DX and the McMahons even feuding?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Look how wrong you are.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's one snowflake for each boob.

    ReplyDelete
  36. wrong. one of the best divas in-ring work wise

    ReplyDelete
  37. Vince tried to hype the Bret Hart DVD by bringing Shawn Michaels out so the two could reminisce about the screwjob, but Shawn told Vince to let it go already. I forget if there was more than that, but probably not.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This was an extension of the Vince vs. Shawn (and God) feud that somehow led to HHH's face turn and the DX reunion that led to roughly a year of HHH and Shawn segments that served no purpose other than to amuse them.

  40. They were stupid too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'd argue that it was one of the few things that late WCW did better than WWF/E. At first when 3 Count first showed up, I thought "a boy band? I hate these guys already." Then I realized "oh, I'm SUPPOSED to hate them. They're a wrestling boy band." Even though it seemed like they were all kinda green, only Karaigas outright sucked. They were involved in some fairly entertaining tag matches, I thought the unlikely inclusion of Tank Abbott as their "biggest fan" was hilarious... in an era that pretty much sucked all around for WCW, they were one of the few things I liked.

Cut to a couple years in the future, and WWE isn't exactly lighting the world on fire creatively either. They're no WCW, but it's not really one of their strongest periods. Vince decides to bring up not three, but FIVE inexperienced guys to do the same basic "high flyers you're supposed to hate" gimmick. But whereas "boy band" was topical (that shit was still popular when WCW did it, right?) and may have even gotten some "guilty pleasure" fans who actually did enjoy that style of music (who knows, maybe Tank really DID like that song), "male cheerleaders" was just... weird. Was America going through a resurgence in the popularity of cheerleading at the time? How many Bring it On movies had they made by that point? I feel like it would've made more sense for them to be a wrestling musical theater troupe.

  42. Yeah love your reviews too. You have a good grasp of your craft!

What was the story behind prime? I assume it aired in syndication or was it a non US show?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mark Calloway? Is that you?

    ReplyDelete
  44. "That's different from majority of the roster HOW?"

You say they never did anything worthwhile, but HOW MUCH WORTHWHILE were they given to do?

    ReplyDelete
  45. With all the leprechaun antics, WCW Prime 1996 seems to be the booking model for WWE Raw since about 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Go-home Raw before WM X8, Detroit, I held up a sign that said that. Basically, just because I couldn't come up with anything better that night. You referenced it in your recap. I was proud. I am a dork.

    ReplyDelete
  47. She was so spot on. Go back and check her at ONS 2006, those things were holding on for dear life

    ReplyDelete
  48. For me it is stupid to make a stupid gimmick so that the fans will hate them because of their stupid gimmick.

I only want cool gimmicks, but the actions of the wrestlers should be evil so that they are heels not because of their gimmick, but because of them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. yeah bough it with a lot of hope and felt like an idiot afterwards

    ReplyDelete
  50. cool heels usually aren't perceived as heels (or at least not for very long).

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well then you turn them face and you have new top baby faces. That's what you actually want, or not? And if they get stale, you can turn them heel again. They did it with Rocky Maivia vs The Rock and it worked. Whereas Rocky Maivia as face was the bad gimmick. ;)

Which heels were better: 3 Count, Spirit Squad, Dean Douglas or Vader, Ric Flair, The Rock, Triple H, Mankind, Bret Hart, Hollywood Hogan, Franchise Shane Douglas...?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Not really, no. Melina was worse. So is Layla.
