NOC PPV

Hey Scott,
So arguably the 2nd biggest match on the NOC "ppv" thats supposed to hook in all these new network subs is Rollins vs Reigns. How does Vince promote this big match? He just had Reigns go over Rollins clean on the go home Raw. Then literally 10 minutes later the announcers hype the ppv match. So am I missing something, or did having the babyface go over the heel clean before the ppv become standard booking fare?

I have no idea why anyone is supposed to pay money to see any of this shit anymore.  AJ and Paige skip around the ring for three months playing "mindgames"!  Apparently stuff gets booked based on what happens on Total Divas!  But they also book stuff to pay off on Total Divas, which doesn't air for another year.  It's a complete mess right now.

"I'm not going to give up on her yet"

Why not? Everyone gave up on her as soon as she uttered "Melina vs. Alicia Fox." She doesn't need NXT, she needs a pink slip.

  8. "Now THAT is how you sell a big show. The crowd was very much into it, Lesnar looked strong from an even start, but Cena showed he wasn't about to be manhandled and was going to fight smarter. Plus, it's clear Cena *can* drop the nice guy act if pushed, and he's been pushed. This is going to be good if they can deliver."

I have to disagree. I thought the segment was horrid. After cutting a great promo, Cena went back to his usual form, delivering a ton of douchechill and cringe-worthy lines. Even Heyman couldn't really save that segment. The brawl itself was weak and uninspiring too. The segment made me not want to see the match at all.

  9. Seems pretty strange to do Reigns/Rollins on Raw just 6 days before the PPV. I could understand doing it last week or 2 weeks ago to set up a PPV rematch, but doing the match after it had already been announced, and just 6 days away seems weird.

  10. WWE is really, really, really shitty at the moment. Holy shit.

    ReplyDelete
  11. WWE makes it very easy to tune out during football season. Nothing sounds outright terrible, but it just doesn't build to anything.

    ReplyDelete
  12. As a long-time WWE loyalist, the shape this company is in right now pains me. But at this point I'm just rooting for them to lose a ton of money consistently since that might change things. Barring that, I wouldn't shed a tear if they went out of business. It's awful that a young generation of fans are being given this product as "wrestling"

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good point, the brawl was weak (Cena's punches looked terrible), and didn't have much intensity to it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It has been shitty right since Daniel Bryan got injured. Well, for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I lived through WCW 2000. This product has a LONG way to go to reach rock bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah save for Brock/Heyman segments and Ambrose/Rollins, it's been a real mess. Which is sad cause Mania and the Raw after Mania showed some huge potential.

    ReplyDelete
  17. For me, it's frustrating because I want the show to be good. I really don't watch much else on tv that isn't sports related (outside of a few shows), so it's something that I used to look forward to watching every Monday...to be honest, I probably wouldn't even watch the show at all if it wasn't for this blog and watching it with everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Somewhat confused on your opinion of Cena this episode: first, you want mind games, a Cena version of Bang 3:16; then, when he just leaves Heyman "trapped" (as if Heyman couldn't foil Khali), he's "bullying" him (as opposed to psychologically destroying him, physically humiliating him, and making Heyman think he is going to be shot a la Bang 3:16 mind games); and finally, you praise Cena for playing "smarter" when attacking Lesnar as he's getting into the ring. The exact same actions could have been done by Kane (say, kidnapping Cena's dad while Cena is late doing Make-a-Wish), with the final segment (rightly) criticizing the HEEL for gaining an unfair advantage by attacking the face as he was entering the ring.

Is there any chance that Reigns' "stand alone" thing teases an Ambrose heel turn at NoC? I hope it just means he is returning to help Reigns when Rollins and Kane are beating him down, but WWE doesn't have my trust of late.

Beating Bo Dallas is not a huge sign of faith in Swagger, but at least he hasn't lost to Bo yet.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Honestly, what I want is good TV. If Cena is going to make Heyman suffer, he needs to go all out. This didn't help matters and was just a bait-and-switch on Cena gaining an edge. Then again, the brawl helped because it gave you an idea Cena's going to take out his anger on Lesnar. I dunno. This is the peril of live blogging and not editing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There's still good stuff and you can tell what's going on. We're years away from that mess.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What ruined it for me was I thought the brawl was REALLY weak, it like they were going half speed through it without much intensity at all.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I lived through WWF 2000. The product has a LONG way to go to reach the heights they once did.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It will never reach those heights ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. For me pro wrestling will never be better than it was in 1992

    ReplyDelete
  25. WCW was awesome in 92. WWF had some good stuff too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Every Raw after Mania always leads to great excitement. At least, since 2012. Can't remember what the 2011 Raw after Mania was.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It will take a lot. And not just creatively. It was a perfect mix of wrestling, characters, storylines, and what makes it all the more doubtful something can match it: A once in a lifetime performer like the Rock. Guys like Rock don't come around often.

    ReplyDelete
  28. As a whole? That may be the best year all around. But strictly WWF, I think 2000 is their apex.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's not going to get better, Vince has completely lost it. Wake me up when Trips takes over.

If the company lasts that long on this downward spiral.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I guess this takes the sails out of that Ambrose/Rollins HIAC match everyone was clamoring for. Seriously, they built a blood feud (without blood) between Rollins and Ambrose and then have Ambrose get taken out to make Rollins look like a legit heel only for him to get beat clean by Reigns in a RAW match a few weeks later. I actually think they could have drawn people into the HIAC PPV if they kept Rollins/Ambrose strong.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you for calling out how awful the AJ/Paige feud is.

Its the most nonsensical feud in the company by a mile

    Why yes. Yes I do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And it had the setup to be their best in awhile. That's why this stupid show is so frustrating. They have the opportunity to have interesting feuds even with the divas and they're just screwing up the booking on all cylinders.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yup, and it's a shame because both of them are pretty talented, and as far as women's wrestling goes it's a feud that people actually were excited to see.
Then they put them together in the most boring, repetitive storyline ever--- no, it's an insult to stories to call it that. They put them together in going on 5 months worth of segments that make fans never want to see them interact again.

Why are they still pretending to be friends? Who's playing mind games with anyone? What the fuck is this????

    ReplyDelete
  36. True. We give it a pass because we like them and it doesn't dominate the program like the Bella stuff sometimes does.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I bet PPV buys are going to be WAY down from last year.

They did announce rock vs Cena officially on that raw. Can't remember what else. Maybe tensei debut?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Also, I love Bray Wyatt as a talent and think he nails everything about the gimmick, and that the gimmick was super cool and introduced perfectly... but goddamn it, if this is how he's gonna be booked they really should just go all out and give him a slop bucket and let him be a comedy hillbilly.

They took what could have been a fascinating main event talent and turned him into another "put over Big Show in preparation for his yearly main event run" nothing heel.

  46. You'd think Bill Watts was booking things!

    ReplyDelete
  47. No, Vince hasn't. That's the thing...all he knows is wrestling. That's it, and so he endlessly tries to shoehorn it into a million other things and it never works but he doesn't know that because all he knows his wrestling...and so on, and so on.

    ReplyDelete

That's why this may be worse than the lean years in the early to mid 00s, because it's hard to save a show that heavily featured Nash, Steiner, and Test on one hand, and Mordecai and Kenzo on the other, so it's no surprise most of it was shitty. Pretty much every guy on the roster can go and they're all being fucking wasted to no end.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bullshit. Watts would have told E! to shove that show up their asses, fired about a quarter of the roster (including nearly all the Divas)... but yeah, he'd still push Big Show and Kane as legit World Title threats.
