NWA Saturday Night 1-20-90

Broadcast on January 20 from Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, Alabama

Hosted by Jim Ross and GORDON SOLIE~!|

JR mentions that Kevin Sullivan has been pulled from the show because his situation with Norman the Lunatic has compromised his ability to objective. Solie promotes his upcoming “Mat Classics” segment and Arn Anderson will defend the TV title against Ranger Ross. All that and more! But let’s go up to the ring.

Rick Fargo and Mark Kyle vs. The Rock & Roll Express.

JR says it’s a 90-minute program tonight because TBS has NBA Basketball scheduled. As for the match Fargo and Kyle do about as well as you would expect. Kyle gets a little power stuff in but Morton pops him with a dropkick to forces him to tag into Fargo. Hiptoss for Fargo and a tag to Gibson, who decks Fargo with an elbow. Tag to Morton, who hiptosses Fargo and adds a nasty knee drop on the arm. More quick tags and arm work. Gibson hits an enziguri and the double dropkick finishes this one.

Commercials are edited out with the exception of a Road Warriors commercial plugging Roos sneakers.

Highlights from an eight-man tag on Worldwide featuring The Road Warriors and The Steiners against the Skyscrapers and Doom. The heels murder the faces once the donnybrook begins. Doom with a spike piledriver on Scott Steiner and “Mean” Mark Callous hits a sweet top rope flying elbow on Animal that is followed by a powerbomb from Danny Spivey. Eventually Rick Steiner chases them off with a chair.

Back to live action.

Larry Santo & Keith Hart vs. The Midnight Express

No, not that Keith Hart…Huge face pop for the Express, especially Eaton as he is a native of Huntsville. Lane starts off fast and tags Eaton, who adds a knee drop. Eaton with an elbow and body slam on Hart and then goes to the top and hits a BEAUTIFUL flying elbow. That was about 0.9 Savage there. Eaton dumps Hart to the floor where Lane roughs him up and the fans just love it. Lane tagged in and he suplexes Hart, tag back to Eaton who gives Hart a super spinebuster for the pin. Quick squash and still awesome.

Doom is next!

Big NWA shows upcoming! Jan. 26 in the Omni! Jan. 24 in Greenville! Jan 22 in Greensboro and tonight in Baltimore!!!

Lex Luger also pushes Roos sneakers.

Teddy Long talks to JR flanked by the Skyscrapers and Doom. I believe this is Long officially taking over the management of Doom. Ron Simmons wearing a mask and cutting a Ron Simmons promo is hilarious. Hmmm…I wonder who is under the mask? Like I said, if there was an internet back then this would be considered trolling.

Back to the ring.

Paul Drake & Sean Regal vs. Doom.

And yes Doom is no longer with Woman. That was a subtle, but very cool intro. Please WWE let Teddy come back and manage Titus and Big E as the new Doom. PRETTY PLEASE. Sean Regal tries to jump Simmons, who kills him with a powerslam and lays in the quality badmouth. Reed is tagged in and smashes Regal with a clothesline as swinging neckbreaker as Ross says he doesn’t know the amateur background of Doom? OH RLY? Once those masks come off he’s throwing out factoids of their collegiate football backgrounds like he was John Madden. Reed with a press slam on Regal and that gives him the opportunity to tag Drake. High knee from Reed and a double clothesline on poor Drake. Belly to belly suplex by Simmons but he pulls Drake up at two. Tag to Reed and Drake tags out too. NASTY back body drop on Regal, he almost landed on his head. Super Hart attack finishes this destruction. Honestly watching Doom beat the crap out of jobbers is almost as fun as watching the Steiner.

And we’re going to watch a replay of a match from The Main Event for some reason.

Sting vs. Mr. Asia.

Not sure who Mr. Asia is – he’s a big white guy under a mask. He stalls a lot. A LOT. His body shape looks familiar but I can’t tell who yet. The crowd is going nuts for Sting and Mr. Asia gets frustrated and just leaves the ring. Back in and Sting slams him not once but twice and hits two drop kicks that send Mr. Asia to the floor for the sixth time in this match. Sting doesn’t want to deal with the BS so he pulls out a pescado to the floor. Asia spends a good minute out there so Sting goes out to the floor too and hangs out with the fans until Asia decides he’s ready. Asia catches Sting coming back in the ring and floors him with a big boot. Asia chokes a lot and Sting reverses an Irish whip and gives Mr. Asia a back body drop and a clothesline off the top rope. Sting thinks about working the arm but instead decides to put this clown away. Stinger splash and Scorpion deathlock end this. I don’t know where they were trying to go with this segment but it was basically a squash with a LOT of stalling.

Back to live action.

Bob Cook & Lee Scott vs. The Fabulous Freebirds.

Speaking of stalling…It’s Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin at this point. One thing I will say about Hayes and Garvin, they always looked like they were having the time of their lives. They come to the ring just dancing and acting silly. It’s refreshing to see two guys with matching perms just being bros and loving life. Cook and Garvin start out and fight each other over a headlock. Tag to Hayes and he sends Cook to the buckle and drops him with a left hand. Cook tags in Scott, who is met with a corner clothesline and then a tag to Garvin, a super corner clothesline from Garvin and the DDT ends it.

Flyin’ Brian and Z-Man tell the Freebirds not to sing it but bring it.

Back to the ring.

The Gladiator vs. “Dr Death” Steve Williams.

Williams pounds away and kills him with a clothesline and a giant elbow drop. Doc works the arm a little bit and then hits him with a football tackle. Doc goes for another tackle but Gladiator raises a knee and floors Williams with a clothesline. Reverse neckbreaker from the Gladiator and a double axe from the second rope. They blown some sort of a move – Solie says Williams went for a scoop slam and was blocked…I saw they botched something else. Williams rallies with the press slam and another elbow drop for two. Williams misses a lariat and Gladiator hits another big clothesline. Knee drop from Gladiator but the suplex was blocked and reversed. Williams rallies with some punches but Gladiator with a thumb to the eye, he goes to the ropes and Williams gets the powerslam out of nowhere for the three count. This wasn’t bad.

(Williams def. Gladiator, pinfall, **)

NWA Live Events coming up in Marietta, Ga. On Jan. 30, Charleston S.C. on Jan 27 and don’t forget the BIG show at the Omni on Jan. 26 and tonight in Baltimore!

JR and Solie talk about the upcoming TV title defense when Cactus Jack Manson busts into the scene and cuts a promo on Dr. Death along with a challenge for next week’s show! I’m kind of excited about that.

NWA World TV Title: Ranger Ross vs. Arn Anderson.

Ross puts over Anderson for being a competitor and offering Ross a title shot as well as other guys that show they are worthy of competing for the title. The TV championship really was a great title in the right guys’ hands. If they ever put out a DVD (or hey a Network Exclusive) on the Best of the TV title they could probably find a lot of good matches. Steiner-Steamboat? Eaton-Austin? A ton of Brad Armstrong matches. Even pull out a few Tully-Dusty matches to make the old man happy.

Ross and Anderson do a ton of wrestling early and a lot of clean breaks and handshakes and stuff. Anderson looks more and more perturbed with each sequence, which sees Ross getting the best of him early on. Hmm Ross is like a REAL Army Ranger so I’m not sure if I’d fuck with him too much. Anderson goes back to his roots and punches Ross off the clean break so he can go to work. Anderson gets the hammerlock and drops four knees on the arm just to be a dick. Ross works his way to his feet and gets and irish whip but sets too early and Anderson drops the elbow on his head. Anderson extends out the arm a little more and Ross gets back to his feet and breaks the hold with some forearms. Ross with a back chop and an irish whip with a back body drop. Anderson with a headbutt to the sternum but Ross hits the combat kick off a corner whip for two. Ross gives Anderson some corner punches but Anderson hits the inverted atomic drop and the spinebuster to get the finish. Not bad at all.

(Anderson def. Ross, pinfall, **1/4)

Woman is back and says that Ric Flair can’t always get what he wants but he can what he needs and if he needs her, she’s more than available. Wow.

The Galaxian vs. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.

Not sure if that’s Alpha or Beta, the TV graphic just says “Galaxian One”. Works for me. Ross announces that Gilbert will get a TV title shot against Arn Anderson next week on Saturday Night. Gilbert and Galaxian do a rope sequence and Gilbert gets the hip toss and Galaxian works Gilbert to the ropes and slaps him. Whoa, that’s a Memphis guy you’re doing that to. And yep, Gilbert cheap shots him and the Galaxian takes a powder. Galaxian back in the ring and rakes Gilbert’s back but Gilbert sends him into the buckle and floors him with a snapmare and a jumping stomp. Suplex from Gilbert and a shoulderblock. Galaxian grunts a lot, sort of like Iron Mike Sharpe. Gilbert does a little showboating as both guys are clearly stalling to waste time. Galaxian goes to the eyes and floors Gilbert with a punch and a second punch. Irish whip but Galaxian sets too early and eats an uppercut. Hot shot off a reversed irish whip ends this one.

JR is with three of the Horsemen – thankfully Ole is missing. Flair goes through the usual spiel….yadda yadda…elite athletes…yadda…yadda…we walk where we wanna walk because we’re the best. And with the new addition of Sting we’re stronger than ever. Sting is like the nerd that the cool kids are hanging out with until they get the answers to the test. Good promo and I’m just dogging it because it’s one we’ve heard a million times.

Live NWA Events! Savannah, Ga. On the 29th! Don’t forget that huge Omni show on the 26th. Columbia, S.C. on the 25th. Myrtle Beach on the 24th and tomorrow night in Richmond where Flair and the Samoans on the bill!

Jim Cornette’s Louisville Slugger with J-Tex (Muta, Sawyer, Anderson). Buzz Sawyer says he was raised in a cage. Muta and Dragonmaster are wearing their costume masks so it’s quite possible neither Mutoh or Nagasaki are present for this segment. Sawyer actually cuts quite an entertaining promo. I’ve never really heard him speak before but he does have some serious charisma. Sawyer says the Sting-Flair match might not happen if they get hurt at the Clash of Champions.

Back to the ring.

Robbie Idol vs. Kevin Sullivan.

Sullivan throws Idol to the floor right away and slams him on the blue mat and runs him into the post. No fucking around for the Gamemaster. JR says Sullivan and Norman will have a falls count anywhere match at the Clash. Cactus Jack is at ringside reading “The Road Less Traveled”. Meanwhile in the ring Sullivan is just maiming this poor kid. Man you really draw the short straw as a jobber if you get Sullivan. He won’t sell anything and he’s probably going to stiff the hell out of you. A lot of kicks to the face and a back suplex. A big right hand and the double stomp finish this.

JR and Solie recap tonight’s action and preview next week’s two big matches as Cactus Jack will take on Dr. Death Steve Williams and Arn Anderson will defend the TV title against Eddie Gilbert.

Bottom Line: Not the best episode but an easy view for 60+ minutes. Next week’s show should be really good but I probably can’t get to it until early Saturday morning.

Comments

  1. Buzz Sawyer: Prophet.

    ReplyDelete
  2. If only he could have predicted his own downfall.

He's quite the legend around where I live because he was considered to be one of the best high school wrestlers to ever come through the area.

    ReplyDelete
  3. He was also seemingly quite the conman. I think it was Foley's first book, he talks about Taker telling him the story of paying Buzz some money to train him. He showed up to Buzz place one day, and was taught how to lock up. Came back the next day or next week, and Buzz had skipped town.

    ReplyDelete
  4. He doesn't look like the type of guy I'd loan any significant amount of money too.

And to stiff the Undertaker...that takes some serious balls.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Buzz always looked kinda crazy to me.

And, sure it was a young, naive Undertaker, but that guy did jobs as a bouncer and a bounty hunter according to his interview on Kimmel back in '03, I wouldn't stiff him either.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Steve Williams is one of those guys that I tried to like but just couldn't do it. Even some of his hyped matches like in the finals of the Champions Carnival in 1994 I just didn't think were that great.

He's a guy I like in theory. Worked in NWA in the late 80's, AJPW in the 90's, cool nickname. But I watch his matches and just don't think he's all that great.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think the "Mad Dog" name was pretty appropriate.

And since both Taker and Sawyer were in the promotion in 1990 I'm wondering if there wasn't a confrontation over that.

  9. Mr Asia was probably Jack Victory.

    ReplyDelete
  10. You can all go fuck yourself ! Puro is the best ! WWE suck balls !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm not sure what accent he is using that's why I don't want to know. I'm afraid it's some bad Latin stereotype.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I swear they were just pulling people out of the woodwork for some of these shows.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wonder if Bam Bam was instructed to work that way or if he just stopped caring. I imagine his frustration with the backstage stuff was building

    ReplyDelete
  14. Because even though Rousey is scary dominant in the UFC, those are still real fights where the chance exists, no matter how remote, that she could get her arm snapped the way she's fond of doing to others.

To call the UFC schedule "cushy" is absurd and discounts everything that goes into preparing for a fight because it "only" requires you to "show up" for one night a few times a year.

Also, Rousey's made no secret of the fact that she's a wrestling fan and a pretty smart businesswoman. She's gotta know she can write her own check at this point. Once she either dispatches Carano and/or Cyborg (or those two options are completely off the table), I could see her opting to try her hand at pro wrestling. Aside from the money, she stands to gain little from mangling scrubs in under a minute every few months.

  15. Vince tends to be loyal to some guys so maybe he just wanted to give him a few extra paydays.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I remember Vince on commentary being slightly confused by that spot too saying "he must be saving himself for KOTR".

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's just that some of these guys are just so random. It would be one thing for a guy to be around on a semi-regular basis but you don't see them for months at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dude was crazy. There's a story from a shoot where where Buzz got in a bar fight and the other guy pulled a gun on him and put the gun in Buzz's mouth thinking Buzz would be scared. Buzz just laughed completely freaking the dude out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Option 1 is better. Since I've been writing here for nearly 4 years, I'd like to say 4 pm EST on Tuesday should be my spot. Sort of like a territorial land claim where I'm first!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I NOMINATE BAYLESS!

I don't even have a problem with someone doing puro matches of the day, but Dock is such a fucking weeaboo about it. I bet he eats lots of sushi and cuddles with his sailor moon pillow waifu while jacking off to Kensuke Sasaki matches.

    ReplyDelete
  22. "There's gunna be people who are interested so why deny them?"

He's had like 15 posts in the past month, and maybe 32 comments combined, 15 of those about people sick of him posting too much. The numbers are speaking. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not your Dog spot or liver spot but your spot?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think a schedule would be nicer. We know the shoot interviews get posted on a Thursday, the Raw recaps are going to be up real soon after Raw, and there are daily posts like QOTD, MOTD and News Updates. Giving Dock Muraco one day a week (let it be Sunday) to post some puro would be fine. I know very little about it, so I appreciate seeing a different style of match from what I'm used to.

Also, maybe there could be a way so that comment count keeps content on the main page longer . Not indefinitely, but maybe 24 hours? I'm not a web designer, I don't know if that's something that's possible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Did Toptenguy write this? Lots of bolding.

  26. Virgil's Gimmick TableSeptember 4, 2014 at 5:31 AM

The funny part is that he really is Puerto Rican. Just like my Irish best friend was extremely offended the first time he saw Sheamus for making fun of Irish people, and I had to pull up his wiki page to show him that he legitimately is Irish and not a prejudiced stereotype.

I never said there were lots, and I never said that it was a 50/50 deal, I'm just saying there's a niche so what's the big deal? Don't like it then don't click on it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I know he did it in a jobber match against the legend, Gus Kantarikis also. And yep, incredible markout spot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's ok, we'll have Kid and WWF1987 put them up in the comments.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yep, looked like any other KOTR qualifier. Would have been like Tito Santana would have beaten Razor Ramon in 1993, or if Quebeccer Pierre would have beaten Mabel in 1994.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Virgil's Gimmick TableSeptember 4, 2014 at 5:36 AM

I was watching that match at midnight last night, and that part where kid tries a spinning kick and Owen catches him in midair, I said "holy shit!" Way louder than I should have.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Do you don't believe in purging things? You must be a hoarder, and there must be zero room in your living room to move around. It's ok to get rid of things to make the overall place nicer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I personally had no problem with amount of content that's gone up here, it showed that something was always going on here. Just like some have said, if I don't want to go to whatever is up, I don't go. However, if people want a schedule, I have no problem with it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Whatever you say, Switzerland!

  35. Virgil's Gimmick TableSeptember 4, 2014 at 5:40 AM

Well it was a good "new era" while it lasted.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That and the threads are the main ones I care about.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So, my SmarK Rant for Rocky Balboa Vs. Thunderlips wont be posted??

    ReplyDelete
  38. So, Meekin is going to get axed huh? Just feels like the direction this is going.

    ReplyDelete
  39. .......whoops....

    ReplyDelete
  40. Classic case of 50/50 booking.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, let Andy do that.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's gonna be the Reigns era now.

    ReplyDelete
  43. We'll always have the 21 hours from the end of Mania XXX to the start of Raw the next night. Vince can never take those 21 hours away from us.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Go get him Farva!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Interesting listening to Heyman tell the story of discovering Bam Bam and how much they hyped him up before he even debuted, yet he never really got to his peak. Yea main eventing a WM is a huge deal, but WWE so dropped the ball with him

    ReplyDelete
  46. That would be good, but its not happening.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The guy wears a silk shirt 3-4 days a week. The guy sits on his high and mighty ivory tower of old spaghetti stained dragonball z VHS tapes. I get controversy creates cash, but draw the line somewhere.

Meanwhile I still can't get my daily Rantz & Ravez column off the ground. Don't like it? DON'T click it, but dammit I should get too post. I promise to be as pompous and self righteous as possible in the comments section of all my articles. While were at it my girlfriend should get to post about how much she doesn't like wrestling while 800 words of her 1200 word column is just notes and insight from me that aren't needed or that would be best served in their own column.

    ReplyDelete
  48. You can't expect an A+ return from B+ players.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The first round tournament shown on free tv was a lot better than the rest of the tournament we had to pay for.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That guy was done for once Hall hit him with the toothpick gimmick and made fun of him in front of the live audience

    ReplyDelete
  51. Even WCW booked him pretty well in those first few weeks before they WCW'd it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You need a John Cena tiny towel to motivate you to NEVER GIVE UP.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Honestly, I skip the majority of other people's posts. The only stuff I look at is anything Scott posts (because that's what drew me here in the first place), the BoD RAWs and such, news posts, and some live RAW and PPV threads.

I don't say that in disrespect to all the other writers, but I'm just not interested in reading their stuff. I came to the blog to read Scott Keith's work, not theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've been digging the lack of Meekin posts. One of the best things to happen around here in a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah, after all the Rocky III comparisons on here, I watched the movie, and just pictured the whole rant in my head watching Stallone and Hogan tangle.

    ReplyDelete
  56. "Last night, ThunderLips did the unthinkable... HE REFUSED TO FOLLOW THE SCRIPT!!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. Agreed.

I come here for the Daily Update, Scott, and one-off "special" articles. There is simply way too many threads going on at any given time and threads don't have a chance to run their course before something else is posted.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yep. Pretty much my opinion as well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. We need Coach Homer Simpson to clean things up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That outfit didn't help

    ReplyDelete
  61. The people have spoken. It's overwhelming. Boot Meek's and Dock posting privileges. Everyone is happy. I'll buy an E-Book if that's what it takes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Crikey Mate Down Under AussieSeptember 4, 2014 at 6:13 AM

Nah it's actually empty right now...completely empty cause I'm painting to sell the house end of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Keep it clean!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Meekin - Cut
    Dock - Cut

That's it for the cuts exxxxxxept Matt, Danielle and Dock again. You're all cut.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like the idea of a sub page or whatever.

I don't begrudge people for seeking an audience, and it's certainly better to be a part of an active community than a dead one. I just don't like when the main page gets really cluttered and good threads get pushed down under a bunch of retro recaps and something from Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  66. An orderly schedule would seem to fix most of the problems. Put Dock on the weekend, give Meekin once a week, Zana gets Saturday mornings at 3am.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Scott: "Good posting, kids. Now its time for the easiest part of any webmaster's job. The cuts. Although I wasn't able to cut everyone I wanted to, I have cut a lot of you. Dock is cut. Darren X is cut. Danielle, you're gone. Meekin, I like your hussle. [Meekin smiles] That's why it was so hard to cut you. (Meekin frowns) Congratulations, the rest of you made the team! (random sighs of relief) Except you, you and you."

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well then uhhh... urrr.. DARN YOU FOR ANSWERING MY SARCASTIC/RHETORICAL QUESTION!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Maybe put one retro recap a week on at the same time as an evening thread?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Other than Raw and Nitro, we really don't need other retro recaps in my opinion. Like 1986 WWF or Saturday night WCW and stuff. Mostly squash matches anyway, I don't see the point.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The only way Rousey would even be worth the investment is for her to face Stephanie at Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  72. That was because Roach is training Manny in the Philippines and Cotto didn't want to train there. Cotto is just waiting out Canelo anyway. It's his last big money fight.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Agreed. I don't think I've even looked at the WCW Saturday night ones. I do like the 1986 stuff just because outside of the PPVs I have no reference to that period and am curious.

    ReplyDelete
  74. BoD RAW would be a bigger draw if it had a better main event scene.

    ReplyDelete
  75. What about using the board for the "B team" posts? They could each have a spot (not a spot like your dog spot, or a liver spot) where they were the only ones that could start a thread. They post their recap or whatever and people can comment on it there. That way, if you ever want to see an archive of those posts, they are there in order.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That could work. Keep things the same here, while the other board would be like "NXT".

  81. It's scary just how much the situation mirrors "WM20" - Benoit and Eddie only got a few months before being replaced, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I know a guy who can be blog admin. Initials: CW.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think his last TV appearance was either this or VERY shortly after on like Challenge or something.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't care who posts and how much, as long as I can make fun of them for doing so because most of them are terrible. I do, however, understand why others have a problem with it.

Also --- I will NOT go to some forum. This isn't 2002. The comments section is fine with me.

    ReplyDelete
  85. They'd basically have to bring Beth Phoenix or Kharma (or Aloisia?) back, or REALLY up the "crazy level" of AJ or Paige.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The forum is just for trading wrestlers in an elaborate fantasy booking game they seem to be playing. It's a whole different world over there. I stumbled in one day, didn't recognize anyone and people were ready to move Skandar Akbar by June. It was terrifying.

    ReplyDelete
  87. He'd turn it into a moneymaker on par with the real site!

    ReplyDelete
  88. It's true! That outfit was horrible. I didn't even like his Jakks action figure because of it!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I bold names and match headings. If you hate it I won't do it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. What? I've got to see this.

    ReplyDelete
  91. He walks out of the company and wants nothing to do with them, but still wants to be paid. Got it.

Owen Hart was in a videogame after he fucking died on live television, Punk thought he would be any different?

    ReplyDelete
  92. You have 30,000 posts and are still going! You are NOT a man of your word.

    ReplyDelete
  93. But the question is....in which round will the youngster Carlos Colon end up being picked?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Strangers match of the day gets plenty of comments and get people discussing the match and the era around that match.

    ReplyDelete
  95. or an imaginary wrestling match they pretend to be in with their friends from the blog.

.... I know, I know a lot of people seem to like that. Fine. I cringe even thinking about it, but fine

    ReplyDelete
  96. THANK YOU. GIVE ME A BIG APE HUG.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Look under nwa-classics.

    ReplyDelete
  98. maybe make it so if something on the b-page gets enough up-votes or likes or whatever, it could show up on the main page

    ReplyDelete
  99. Holy shit! We have a subterranean civilization of mutants under the blog of doom!

    ReplyDelete
  100. It's also scary that Kane is the constant in all this. I believe he was Benoit's next feud after winning the WHC.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Like the great Bruce Springsteen once said, "can't start a fire without a spark". I was glad to provide that spark yesterday. For the record, I am in favor of a set schedule, but I am calling for the release of Muraco and Meekin immediately.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Half of them probably have posting privileges.

  103. I second this motion. For the good of the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  104. If they are not released, I will do nWo style run ins on all of their threads until they are forced into exile. :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think we should keep Meekin. He gives us one focused target for our aggression. The Dock hate didn't really start until after Meekin started posting less.

    It's wrestling... Everyone comes back

    ReplyDelete
  107. He might come back to run the B Team. Ya never know...

    ReplyDelete
  108. I can't help but feel this is Caliber's fault. Not only did he leave money on the table... HE LEFT MUTANTS UNDER THE BLOG!!!

But...but if we use that board our post count starts from scratch and the Top 5ers will be equal to the rest of the board.
It would take ABeyAnce 3 hours to get his post count back up to 30K.

I post the daily classic at 3:00 PM ET every day. I have no issue with posting my occasional "whatever I happen to be watching on the Network at the time" recap on the B+ player page. The only other thing I really do is post the catch-all threads on Tuesday, Thursday and non-PPV Sunday, which brings in 1000+ posts on a regular basis.

    ReplyDelete
  113. To me it's posturing because the way his contract is with WWE, the fact that he quit with time left would allow WWE to insist he was still under contract because he left with more than 6 months left. Sort of how they let Rey Mysterio's contract roll over because of all his injuries. Punk could insist they breached their contract over royalties, just do he could get out of his WWE deal.

    ReplyDelete
  114. He still has the right to be compensated for when the wwe profits off his likeness

    ReplyDelete
  115. At the very least Meekin should be forced to change his avatar. That fat guy Wolverine cosplay is one of the more annoying pictures I've ever seen in my life.

    ReplyDelete
  116. As a lawyer (different than Otunga), I can confirm that there is a difference between a letter and a lawsuit. A good chunk of the time, the letter will help avoid a lawsuit because the people who got the letter would rather settle than go to court. I think this is posturing on Punk to get out of his WWE deals because he is still under contract.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Aw man...and I was just about to suggest to Scott that I could do a comprehensive review of 1980s wrestling action figures...

They had no poseability whatsoever! You know how hard it was to get Hogan to do a legdrop with those things?! Fuck!!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Stranger in the AlpsSeptember 4, 2014 at 7:31 AM

    #Notatall

    ReplyDelete
  119. Do they not own that, or did that expire with his contract?

    ReplyDelete
  120. No one will ever read or comment on anything that's not posted here. Why flush out all that material because some people can't scroll with their mouse?

    ReplyDelete
  121. I would read that.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Having the raw recap 8th on the page at 8am on Tuesday morning is stupid. Especially if nothing else is posted the rest of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  123. See this is stupid to me. I like to read the random show recaps occasionally. Why do we have to get rid of them again?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Certainly muraco. First impressions are important people.

    ReplyDelete
  125. So just reshuffle the set up for the front page

    ReplyDelete
  126. Could be worse. Could begat guy Sailor Moon.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Or just scroll down.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Ted Arcidi had an action figure, man...TED ARCIDI!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  129. WrestleMania II battle royal participant Ted Arcidi to you!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I like having the option of watching the Japanese stuff that Dock posts, but keeping it to a weekly post of several matches might work a bit better.
The idea of a schedule seems good to me. I do like coming home from work on a Tuesday knowing that Logan's 'What the World was Watching' post will be up at some point that night.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Stranger in the AlpsSeptember 4, 2014 at 7:42 AM

SD Jones had one too! You could have had an MSG house show opening match!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Yeah, the games are mapped out about a year in advance and I'd imagine there's a clause saying if you are under contract by a certain date, they have the right to use you. They should however pay you royalties regardless of contract status.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Basically Scott and one person he trusts should be in charge of hitting 'Publish' - everyone else can just get posts pending and if they're up to scratch Scott/the person he trusts can post them

    ReplyDelete
  134. Also imo the more controversial posts, like say the guy who posted the Benoit documentary the other week, are a good idea. It makes for an entertaining, fucked up comment section which is largely what the BOD is about

    ReplyDelete
  135. "You know, there are three things we're never getting rid of here at the BoD. One, the mutants in the forums. Two, Dock's insufferable pile of Puro tapes. And three, our illiterate, wolverine-cosplaying, unwanted video game reviewer, Paul Meekin."

    ReplyDelete
  136. They don't really have a Diva over enough to face Rousey other than maybe AJ. It'd be better if they still had a dominant diva like Beth Phoenix or Kharma.

Trish could work if they could get her and she seems to be back in ring shape.

    ReplyDelete
  137. "Sawyer says the Sting-Flair match might not happen if they get hurt at the Clash of Champions."
    Man, what if...

    ReplyDelete
  138. I like those posts.

Just cause you don't doesn't make throwing page hits away smart

    ReplyDelete
  139. Nobody came out of that day looking good.

    ReplyDelete
  140. i think the main page is fine as is. but thats one mans opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I fear the sub page would die a death.

The threads under the articles are half the reason to come and splitting the pages will lower conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Funny comments + mega page views = everyone wins

    ReplyDelete
  143. i had a rubber hogan action figure that was my brothers and it was hard as hell to get the leg drop position on that thing.

    ReplyDelete
  144. you said fuck

    ReplyDelete
  145. In my head, I read all of your posts with an Australian accent.

    ReplyDelete
  146. im for as many retro recaps as ppl are willing to watch and review.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Say what you will about the Backlund-for-President thing going nowhere, but I remember him getting "Hail to the Chief" as his entrance music for his surprise appearance in the 2000 Rumble, and it came out pitch perfect. And really, if that gimmick had never happened, what music would he have gotten?

    ReplyDelete
  148. which would mean that the next WrestleMania would see the breakthrough of the next uber-star.

    ReplyDelete
  149. this would require the WWE to actually care about the "divas" and build one or more challengers up in a convincing way... which they won't.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I thought the same thing, and I'm a Punk fan, for the record. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of breaching your contract but then wanting all the perks that come with it. I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. Two-way street, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I suppose that's the question, though. Normally he would, but when you factor in breaching contracts, shit might change.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Buzz obviously had a rep with the guys too. On one of the Legends of Wrestling shows Hayes talks about how the promotion he was in wanted to go across town since another promotion was running the same night but they decided not to when they realized that the Road Warriors and Buzz were on the card.

    ReplyDelete
  153. So if we are moving to the whole schedule thing can we do the obvious if WWE Network isnt and have these posts go at 605 on Saturdays?

    ReplyDelete
  154. one could argue his best run (booking wise) might have been his 1997/1998 ECW tenure.

    ReplyDelete
  155. so you would have wanted the Mantaur as the winner?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Kwangs pre match robe: great.
    in-ring outfit: disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yeah I couldn't wait for the guy to debut and I was willing to give the WWF all of my pocket money, but once I saw him, I was left disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Stephanie screaming while in the armbar? Here's my $9.99!

    ReplyDelete
  159. That is how it works though. Breaking a contract isn't a crime or even a bad thing. You're not punished for it. BOTH parties are just made whole as best as things can be. The wwe absolutely would not be able to use his name and likeness without compensating him for it.

    ReplyDelete
  160. We didn't say we didn't like it, just that Bob Holly never use to win.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Using him in DVDs and video games is a seperate issue from him wrestling for the wwe.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Why yes, they did.

    http://www.rspwfaq.net/2014/06/the-smark-rant-for-monday-night_10.html

    Worth tracking down.

    ReplyDelete
  163. If i was in the front row I'd still be deaf.

    ReplyDelete
  164. We'll see. What I can do. If that is the case they will be done in bulk.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Ever get the feeling like everyone but Sting knew something was up? :)

    ReplyDelete
  166. You're being way too hard on yourself. You made a mistake people make every day.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Pretty sure it was only in the Kantarikis match Vince Jordan mentions. I believe the Bundy match has the HBK-Diesel reunion afterwards (with absolutely no man-love going on there, nope, none at all:).

    ReplyDelete
  168. No worries Kyle.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Was this a shoot or a botch by Kyle

    ReplyDelete
  170. Him owning his name just means no one can stop him from using it, and no promotion can call another wrestler CM Punk. It doesn't mean that WWE, TNA, ROH, IWA Mid-South, or whoever can't use their footage of him to release "The Best of CM Punk".

    ReplyDelete
  171. I never got that Mantaur gimmick. Was it a PG Version of Vader or so? They must have liked brown fur clothes back then.

    ReplyDelete
  172. No way... but looking back, watching it live, I had my money on Holly losing since he almost always lost singles matches, and Mantaur was fat. Big and fat = usually won in WWF. It's just not an inspired matchup.

    ReplyDelete
  173. 1995? I don't know... Double J/Undertaker, Yokozuna/Luger, and Bulldog/Owen had quality behind them in star power, and I guess Shawn/Bundy can fall in that category too, but then we have: Doink/Roadie, Mabel/Adam Bomb, Holly/Mantaur, Duke Droese/Kama, and Razor/Blu Twin.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Exactly the first half you just mentioned blew the quality on the PPV itself.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I'm curious what AJ makes of all this? How it effects her standing in the company?

    ReplyDelete
  176. I thought Holly totally sucked at this point. He was cool for a few weeks when they did the "big shot" gimmick (maybe in 99 or 2000?). I thought that had a shot to get over if they stuck with it

    ReplyDelete
  177. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 4, 2014 at 10:41 AM

It makes sense with Roach's schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  178. In terms of getting over, then yes, 99 was his peak, but Holly was a good worker, especially around this point.

    ReplyDelete
  179. I couldn't get enough of cactus jack in this era

    ReplyDelete
  180. He still didn't get it when ole showed up.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Lord Alfred Hayes did legends of wrestling before he died in 2005?

    ReplyDelete
  182. Didn't buZz die in 1991?

    ReplyDelete
  183. Virgil's Gimmick TableSeptember 4, 2014 at 12:09 PM

    Aka Diesel Power attempt 2.

    ReplyDelete
  184. It's a swerve, folks. He will be back for wrestlemania 31

    ReplyDelete
  185. It would seem one has nothing to do with the other.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Owen died. Punk is still alive. Kind of an important difference. Punk retained all the rights to his name and likeness when he signed his contract, so the WWE using the name and likeness held legally by a former employee for profit.

I'm firmly in the "Fuck Punk" camp and have been from day one, but this is not about him wanting a paycheck for no work. He has a pretty ironclad claim to royalties here.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Assuming he did breach. Considering the WWE hasn't so much as peeped about suing him for breach, it's a fairly safe bet he didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Rousey vs Stephanie!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  189. Duh, I meant Dok Hendrix

    ReplyDelete
  190. Exactly, the IRS match in particular should have been nothing but a Squash to start his run through the Corporation ending with Sid. That's...the only way to book a face up against his former stable.

    ReplyDelete
  191. To be fair, when you want to make a guy look like a star, Mike Rotunda is the last person you call.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I am sick of cm punk. great performer, but in real life he comes off and from what i heard is a fucking prick!

    ReplyDelete

    (showers for three hours)
