I loved the Championship Scramble concept at Unforgiven 2008 and would love to see them bring that back. I'm baffled they haven't tried a PPV around it in lieu of a goddamn Fatal Four Way PPV.
Extreme Rules. If you're going to be PG it makes the whole concept worthless. If you wanted to bring back the 13, fine. In the meantime, I'd be fine with Backlash coming back in this spot since that's essentially what would occur anyway. But you wouldn't be limited to trying to make things "extreme"
HIAC. Not the match itself but the PPV which forces one or two HIAC matches on the audience for no other reason then it's the name of the PPV.
Bring Back.
King of the Ring. It lets you have another number 1 contender and a reason for wrestlers to fight.
Clash of the Champions. If you're going to steal the concept, fine. But since you own the copyright, why not use the actual name instead of Night of Champions.
Maybe an event or two at a non traditional location? An actual bash at the beach. It wouldn't have to be a PPV if they wanted the gate, but I always liked the way things like that looked as a change of pace. Right now, the only time anything is different is Mania and the occasional Old Skool Raw.
The 'ultimate survival' gimmick for a Survivor Series, akin to 1990, when all the survivors from the winning teams advance into one final match. Of course, you'd need more than one "traditional Survivor Series match" on the card to make it work, as it seems there's only been one or two elimination bouts for the last several years.
You could even take it a step further and have the survivors of the final match then have to face EACH OTHER to determine a solitary winner. The Sole Survivor then gets the title shot at the Royal Rumble.
Move Money in the Bank to just one match and have it at WrestleMania. Get rid of TLC, Hell in a Cell, Extreme Rules. and Elimination Chamber. Bring in Halloween Havoc (Oct), Backlash, (Apr) Uncensore (Feb), and Starrcade (Dec).
I LOVE tournaments! The King of the Ring should be brought back AND mean something, If they aren't going to make it a proper PPV/Special, why not do it as a Network exclusive event. But that goes into the opportunities the Network has and doesn't take advantage of.
Only if the WWE had access to enough tag teams, a reboot of the Crockett Cup would be the tits.
As others have mentioned, the Hell in a Cell PPV should be eliminated.
I can't think of a PPV concept that I liked... I guess King of the Ring, but with a lot more meaning than WWF ever did with it. Have wrestlers really want to get in the tournament, and a worthwhile prize at the end like a main title shot. And I would only do the Semifinal and Final at the PPV, at the most. I always found the Quarterfinals to be overkill, plus that leads to booking problems and obvious results.
They need to junk hell in the cell. Because I LOVE Hell in the cell. It should be special...not just a ppv gimmick. My favorite match of all time is Hunter vs Taker in the Cell at 28. It got me back into wrestling. Bring back....Survivor Series. Hunter, Brock, Orton, Rollins, Kane, Vs Reins, Cena, Ambose, Jericho, and...I don't know...say The Rock? Yeah I could be talked into seeing that.
Didn't Dusty and Koloff also win that? Something about Magnum TA almost dying? More to my point do you really want the memory of Nikita Koloff going pro USA shattered by the image of Rybaxel holding that cup?
I'm seeing some hate for MITB. I really like it as a PPV because it's different and keeps a championship the focus of the night. NoC should theoretically the the same, but yanno. NoC should be a lot more than it is - good concept, classy presentation but a bastard stepchild nonetheless.
Hell in the Cell needs put away for a long, long time or until they decide blood is OK again. I would love to see the No Mercy name return in its place.
Cyber Sunday COULD be cool if they didn't always try to manipulate the voting. You either have two shit choices with the one they want you to pick, or three choices that are basically the same thing (A NO HOLDS BARRED MATCH, NO DQ, or EXTREME RULES).
I would like to see Cyber Sunday where the title match goes to a contender of the fans choice and the get the entire roster to choose from and not just the usual 3 or 4.
If Hunter smothered him tonight and then had the bloodiest most epic War Games ever, inside Hell In the Cell it would be worth it right? I passed Titan Towers last week, its not hard to find, we could lay flowers at the building and have moments of silence then watch Hunter, Brock, Rollins, Orton, Kane vs Cena, Reins, Ambrose, Jericho, and one last time just for fun The Undertaker, kill each other
I love the concept of KotR. Tournaments are a lot of fun, and maybe they could release the brackets the same time the NCAA does, to play into the bracket aspect? The problem, is most of the ones WWF did were just boring as hell.
Forget bringing something back. Invent a new concept.
-A Tag focused show. -A co-produced show with NJPW. -A Legends based show bring back guys that haven't been around but can still go. Doesn't even have to be huge names.
At this point, I personally don't want to see them bring back any concept PPVs. I also feel they need to do away with the Elimination Chamber, Hell In A Cell, and TLC PPVs.
I agree. It supposed to be this brutal feud/career ending match and now they can't even have any blood. So it just waters down the concept and takes away from the allure.
Dump HIAC, in fact retire the gimmick outright. Without blood it's meaningless and generally rather boring. Bring back KOTR and take Survivor Series back to its original concept.
Or a tag team concept show, like the old Tag Wars in ROH. A six man tag team tournament, with either 4 or 8 teams, and make all the matches, elimination matches, with only the "survivors" advancing.
Always loved KOTR and I was sad to see it get the boot after 2002. From a business standpoint I understood, as it was my understanding that it never did big numbers as a PPV. They brought it back half-assed years later, but it was never the same.
King of the Ring would make for an awesome network exclusive, one night tourney. Lower tier than the special events. Like no title program required, no programs required really at all. Just an independent of itself, one night tourney.
Bring back the real survivor series. It would be an interesting concept show and you wouldn't need to burn one of lesnars dates to make it interesting.
Make results matter. Win King of the Ring and you get a title shot at SummerSlam. Win your Survivor Series elimination match and you're guaranteed a number between 15-30 in the Royal Rumble.
How about this as a ppv concept...stop having so many repeat matches on ppvs. Im tired of seeing ppvs (special events) where its just rematches of the last show. I want new challengers for the belt instead of just rematch after rematch, I want feuds that I can care about, I want a mid card of the show to matter. I also don't want bull crap finishes unless it means something.
The attitude era ruined the title matches as since 1998, a lot of the ppv matches are just rematches main events. It has gotten way worse since 2004.
Take a guy (say Sheamus, ryback, cesaro), have them win a major tourney (battle bowl, kotr) and then say they want a title shot at next ppv. It worked for Lesnar, sting, mable, Owen, etc
This thread is just "name everything you remember about wrestling ppvs!".
I say bring back Halftime Heat, have a Network exclusive halftime show for every Super Bowl. Also they should take the Slamboree concept and graft it to the HOF ceremony and replace Elimination Chamber with it. Basically make an Old School Raw into a PPV with legends fighting young guys and have.the inductions in between.
I am not a fan of the gimmick match PPVs like "Hell in the Cell", "TLC", and "Elimination Chamber" as I feel the importance and quality of these type of namesake matches are greatly diminished when they occur simply because it's "that time of year" (strangely enough, though, I am completely cool with "Money in the Bank").
I would love to see the classic Attitude Era-PPVs like "Backlash", "Judgment Day", "Unforgiven" and "No Mercy" come back.
It'd be neat if they actually did that because the anonymous people would get involved and vote someone hilarious in for teh lulz. Zack Ryder for the win?
MITB isn't a feud-ender like the others, it's an excuse for a bunch of guys to have a car-crash spectacle and dangle a title shot in front of them, so closer to Royal Rumble than Hell in a Cell.
Maybe not as a PPV concept, but one of the best things WCW did was the Spring Break Nitro, Loved the atmosphere of the pool surrounding the ringside area and you knew someone would always go into it but it was good finding out who.
Not even going to scroll down. I'n pretty sure a lot of people said War Games. I was never really a fan of most of those, so I would pick Bash At The Beach. WWE desperately needs a change of scenery.
Two matches for two briefcases....one is the classic MITB case that can be used at any time, the other is a 'call at least few weeks in advance' case that can be cashed in to set up a PPV main event.
UPVOTED!! Definitely love the cup idea. Call it the Vince McMahon Sr Memorial Cup, make it an invitational for a million bucks (kayfabe) have NXT stars, indie/Japanese guys and have some retired teams make a run at the trophy too. Great way to build up some new stars and try some guys out.
If there's one thing WCW did better, at least until around ~1999 when they made everything dark and grey for some reason, their PPVs were distinguishable for most the part with their different scenery and themes. Every WWE PPV except for Wrestlemania may as well be the same.
What needs to go is probably the theme ppv like Hell in the Cell, TLC, Fatal Four Way, shoot even the Night of Champions should be a three hour RAW. Now what should be brought back are things that pique your interest like Beach Blast, Halloween Havoc, make the December PPV Starrcade with a Night of Champions theme . You don't have to go overboard acknowledging WCW but a little credit shouldn't hurt.
WCW didn't have to make a dime at the box office gate...so, they could do giveaway shows like a show for such a small audience. Don't see WWE, which needs the revenue stream, doing anything like that...
How about THAT night? Win a brutal MITB match...and then, there's the fresh champion ready to go. Would work great for a monster heel or an underdog face...
Halloween Havoc instead of Hell In A Cell in October. I hate that we can only have HIAC matches at one time of year, and most of the matches don't deserve the concept, like Punk/Ryback or Orton/Sheamus.
Call me crazy, but I loved the WCW Lethal Lottery matches where wrestlers were assigned to random (wink, nudge) tag teams, with winners of the ensuing tag matches moving on to an every-man-for-himself battle royale. One of my favorite wrestling moments was Road Warrior Hawk getting teamed up with perennial jobber Rip Rogers, and scoring a win by basically throwing Rogers from outside the ring onto his opponent for the pinfall.
Punching kicking weapons shots and spammed finishes. that was it. they told a story with no wrestling, good for them, biut that meansh.don't buy it as a great matcg.
agree regarding TLC and Hell in a Cell, but not with the Chamber. I think it has the wrong placement and shouldn't be in february. but the match itself feels much more like the Rumble to me - a huge contest to determine a winner (instead of "this feud escalated so much it needs this special match to blow if off").
especially if they use the SS1990 template with the "surivors match" at the end (and in contrast to back then you wouldn't even know who wins because nowadays heels can win the final match of a ppv broadcast).
I don't know if it was a classic, as I far prefer the Wrestlemania 27 match, but it was meant to be two titans going at it one last time, and it certainly felt that way.
The superkick->pedigree spot had everyone freaking out
HIAC can be kept, but ONLY if it's one blood-feud match.
I might get killed for this, but I'm a sucker for stacked-cage matches, like the one Russo won. I know that they've been terrible matches for the most part, but I still believe that a booking genius like Pat Patterson could come up with a great way to make it work. Even if you don't do stacked-cages, make climbing a cage more exciting.
I loved the Championship Scramble concept at Unforgiven 2008 and would love to see them bring that back. I'm baffled they haven't tried a PPV around it in lieu of a goddamn Fatal Four Way PPV.
ReplyDeleteI loved the 1990 Survivor Series where they had all the winners team up at the end in a survivors match. It was cool to see different combos.
ReplyDeleteThey should junk shitty writing and bring back good writing.
ReplyDeleteI think the scramble works for mid-card belts, but shouldn't be used for the WWE Title.
ReplyDelete300 upcoming posts about War Games. thread over.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your answer?
ReplyDeleteI always liked King of the Ring. I say get rid of HIAC or TLC.
ReplyDeleteA real survivor series. Not just one marquee elimination match but a bunch of them.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a king of the ring where it feels important to win.
Get rid of gimmick PPVs outside of the Rumble and Money in the Bank.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, having a PPV with multiple matches of the same type just kills the gimmick.
I'd love June to to back to being King of the Ring with the winner getting the title shot at SummerSlam. That involves long term booking however.
ReplyDeleteKill HITC PPV, make SurSer a elimination match only show.
ReplyDeleteKeep Extreme rules, just move it to December.
ReplyDeleteNo more Hell in a Cell PPV.
ReplyDeleteNot a PPV but an NXT Battle Bowl would be fun.
+1 for the Wargames
End -
ReplyDeleteExtreme Rules. If you're going to be PG it makes the whole concept worthless. If you wanted to bring back the 13, fine. ReplyDeleteVince Jordan bitching about posts again.
ReplyDeleteThread continues.
I LOVE tournaments! The King of the Ring should be brought back AND mean something, If they aren't going to make it a proper PPV/Special, why not do it as a Network exclusive event. But that goes into the opportunities the Network has and doesn't take advantage of.
ReplyDeleteOnly if the WWE had access to enough tag teams, a reboot of the Crockett Cup would be the tits.
As others have mentioned, the Hell in a Cell PPV should be eliminated.
King of the Ring, because tournaments rule. Especially when they're well booked and mean something (see: 93, 94.)
ReplyDeleteEnd HITC. That should be a special, blow-off for a major blood feud type gimmick event, not an annual PPV.
Also contributing nothing to the question asked.
ReplyDeleteHalloween Havoc needs to come back.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a PPV concept that I liked... I guess King of the Ring, but with a lot more meaning than WWF ever did with it. ReplyDeleteWe are all going without saying that War Games doesn't count right?
ReplyDeleteSo long, HITC.
ReplyDeleteSay hello to...
THE JIM CROCKETT, SR. MEMORIAL TAG TEAM CUP!!!!!!!!
Also Cyber Sunday or whatever that was can also return. Fan votes are fun.
Because we need to job the entire roster to Cena in a single match, goddammit.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...Ryback and Axle might win that. I don't want to live in a world where Rybaxel won the same tournament as Luger and Sting...just saying.
ReplyDeleteMove MITB back to WM, move Elimination Chamber to Survivor Series, kill HITC, Extreme Rules, and TLC.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind seeing Battlebowl come back, but not as a PPV, maybe a yearly Raw special.
To be fair Cena never won a battle royal to the best of my knowledge, (then again neither did Hogan. See...and everyone said they won all the time)
ReplyDeleteHogan won the Rumble twice.
ReplyDeleteThe Road Warriors, Sting and Luger, the Super Powers, SlaterGator... a true Who's Who of tag team wrestling.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Dusty and Koloff also win that? Something about Magnum TA almost dying? More to my point do you really want the memory of Nikita Koloff going pro USA shattered by the image of Rybaxel holding that cup?
ReplyDeleteI'm seeing some hate for MITB. I really like it as a PPV because it's different and keeps a championship the focus of the night. NoC should theoretically the the same, but yanno. NoC should be a lot more than it is - good concept, classy presentation but a bastard stepchild nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteMoney in the Bank is fine. People are just pissy because Cena won.
ReplyDeleteDusty and Nikita went by the name Super Powers. They won the second one, I think.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they can just change it to the Vince McMahon, Sr. Memorial Cup.
I think with Money in the Bank the key would be to do more challenges in advance like RVD and Cena respectively.
ReplyDeleteHell in the Cell needs put away for a long, long time or until they decide blood is OK again. I would love to see the No Mercy name return in its place.
ReplyDeleteNot until Vince dies.
ReplyDeleteAh didn't know that. And yeah why the hell isn't Vince Sr getting memorial love? Even Jock Ewing got a shout out on the last episode of Dallas.
ReplyDeleteHIAC is pointless now. No blood and they don't even sell it as brutal when the participants are usually wrestling on RAW the next night.
ReplyDeleteI think Battle Bowl and King of the Ring are perfect ways to spice up RAW's but don't really work as PPV shows.
ReplyDeleteInstead of Backlash bring back Spring Stampede and Superbrawl instead of Uncensored
ReplyDeleteBring back the Raw Bowl.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the HIAC Wargames that was in WWE 12
ReplyDeleteDitto with TLC.
ReplyDeleteCyber Sunday COULD be cool if they didn't always try to manipulate the voting. You either have two shit choices with the one they want you to pick, or three choices that are basically the same thing (A NO HOLDS BARRED MATCH, NO DQ, or EXTREME RULES).

ReplyDeleteNeither of these are concepts, but the wwe should resurrect the mGreat American Bash and Halloween Havoc.
ReplyDeleteI love the concept of KotR. Tournaments are a lot of fun, and maybe they could release the brackets the same time the NCAA does, to play into the bracket aspect? The problem, is most of the ones WWF did were just boring as hell.
ReplyDeleteThat was a Royal Rumble...not a battle royal. Get your head in the game Adam! I am appalled by your lack of focus
ReplyDeleteWar Games in the Cell is such a money concept.
ReplyDeleteI only want Havoc if they actual let it be fun and Halloweeny. I have no desire for it to be just another show.
ReplyDeleteI loved that too! I wished they had done it more.
ReplyDeleteForget bringing something back. Invent a new concept.
ReplyDelete-A Tag focused show.
-A co-produced show with NJPW.
-A Legends based show bring back guys that haven't been around but can still go. Doesn't even have to be huge names.

ReplyDeleteBattlebowl would definitely make for a fun Raw, or even two. If it were logistically feasible, maybe it could be on the Network.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It supposed to be this brutal feud/career ending match and now they can't even have any blood. So it just waters down the concept and takes away from the allure.
ReplyDeleteDump HIAC, in fact retire the gimmick outright. Without blood it's meaningless and generally rather boring.

I agree 100%
ReplyDeleteGet rid of TLC and Hell in a Cell. Bring back KOTR and original style Survivor Series.
ReplyDeleteNo Disqualification, No DQ, N Disqualification.
ReplyDeleteOr a tag team concept show, like the old Tag Wars in ROH. A six man tag team tournament, with either 4 or 8 teams, and make all the matches, elimination matches, with only the "survivors" advancing.
ReplyDeleteI think they need to get rid of the "downed champion" crutch; a MITB champ must give advance notice and will get his title shot at the next PPV.
ReplyDeleteJust as long we get the Chamber of Horrors
ReplyDeleteI would love for them to bring back the championship scramble match.
ReplyDeleteAlways loved KOTR and I was sad to see it get the boot after 2002. From a business standpoint I understood, as it was my understanding that it never did big numbers as a PPV. They brought it back half-assed years later, but it was never the same.
ReplyDeleteThat they are leaving on the table.
ReplyDeleteKing of the Ring would make for an awesome network exclusive, one night tourney. Lower tier than the special events. Like no title program required, no programs required really at all. Just an independent of itself, one night tourney.
ReplyDeleteLike slamboree?
ReplyDeleteBring back the real survivor series. It would be an interesting concept show and you wouldn't need to burn one of lesnars dates to make it interesting.
ReplyDeleteGet rid of EC and HiaC. Make them special again.
ReplyDeleteBring back King of the Ring.
Get rid of: Elimination Chamber, Hell in a Cell, Battleground, TLC and Payback.
ReplyDeleteBring back: Halloween Havoc (if nothing else, for the 1998 set), Bash at the Beach, King of the Ring, SuperBrawl and Spring Stampede.
Move: put the Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series. Winner gets a title shot in December or get to be #30 in the Rumble.
The one where they have good matches that mean something, sometimes over titles that are important should come back.
ReplyDeleteMake results matter. Win King of the Ring and you get a title shot at SummerSlam. Win your Survivor Series elimination match and you're guaranteed a number between 15-30 in the Royal Rumble.
ReplyDeleteHow about this as a ppv concept...stop having so many repeat matches on ppvs. Im tired of seeing ppvs (special events) where its just rematches of the last show. ReplyDeleteNOTHING worked with Mabel.
ReplyDeleteYour favorite match of all time doesn't have any wrestling, and they didn't use the Cell at all. Your favorite matxh of all time sucks royal ass.

I think it's hard for Vince to think about his dad; seems to be a lot of emotion there.

The man did almost cry in 87 at WM 3. I almost cried at my sisters wedding last week.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be neat if they actually did that because the anonymous people would get involved and vote someone hilarious in for teh lulz. Zack Ryder for the win?
ReplyDeleteI would respond but you can't even spell match right. Let me guess..your from West Virginia aren't you?
ReplyDeleteMITB isn't a feud-ender like the others, it's an excuse for a bunch of guys to have a car-crash spectacle and dangle a title shot in front of them, so closer to Royal Rumble than Hell in a Cell.

ReplyDeletehow many said War Games? Probably 80% so let's go with that
ReplyDeleteTaker v. Triple H has lots of wrestling and is an enjoyable contest with a big match feel.
ReplyDeleteBring back War Games and King of the Ring. KotR could be a tournament on Raw rather than a ppv.
ReplyDeleteThey should bring back the one with the concept of having good matches and coherent, interesting storylines.
ReplyDeleteNot even going to scroll down. I'n pretty sure a lot of people said War Games. I was never really a fan of most of those, so I would pick Bash At The Beach. WWE desperately needs a change of scenery.
ReplyDeleteTwo matches for two briefcases....one is the classic MITB case that can be used at any time, the other is a 'call at least few weeks in advance' case that can be cashed in to set up a PPV main event.

ReplyDeleteHow ridiculous was "Summerslam" this year with just the Raw set?
ReplyDeleteKane did that a few years ago (2010, I believe).
ReplyDeleteWORLD CHAMPION BRIAN KENDRICK
ReplyDeleteI think it makes more sense to put it on Raw (like they did the last few times). more eyeballs = makes the win seem more important.
ReplyDeleteagree regarding TLC and Hell in a Cell, but not with the Chamber. I think it has the wrong placement and shouldn't be in february. but the match itself feels much more like the Rumble to me - a huge contest to determine a winner (instead of "this feud escalated so much it needs this special match to blow if off").
ReplyDeleteupvote for the second part.
ReplyDeleteespecially if they use the SS1990 template with the "surivors match" at the end (and in contrast to back then you wouldn't even know who wins because nowadays heels can win the final match of a ppv broadcast).
although I can understand that for those watching that are younger the Series might be a "boring" concept: you see the top stars facing each other pretty much every week while back then even the mere thought of a Hogan/André "rematch" as part of the Series was enough to sell the ppv.
ReplyDeleteMake SS an elimination style tag tournament, where only the survivors of each team advance.
ReplyDeleteIt could be the only way we ever see Cesaro with world title gold.
ReplyDeleteBut, they have that network that's only 9.99!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd like to see those shows return as well, and welcome to the BoD by the way.
ReplyDeleteGive us a G1 Climax!
ReplyDeleteWe have an edit button.

I know that they've been terrible matches for the most part, but I still believe that a booking genius like Pat Patterson could come up with a great way to make it work. Even if you don't do stacked-cages, make climbing a cage more exciting.
