QOTD #73 (Digest) - ECW title changes

Question of the Day: Now that we've seen the list of WWE tag team title changes, that got me to thinking.......what was the greatest or most memorable title change that took place in ECW? (The real ECW that is....1993-2001 version)?

Comments

  1. Taz getting the "FINGERPOKE" from Tommy Dreamer @ CyberSlam 2000

  2. Boo. I was gonna say Vince McMahon...

  3. Taz makes Shane Douglas tap, wins the TV Title at Wrestlepalooza '97.

    ReplyDelete
  4. He definitely was kingly...in a gluttonous Henry the 8th kind of way...

    ReplyDelete
  5. I wonder if Swagger ever considered MMA. He's got the wrestling background and he's a good size for a heavyweight.

    ReplyDelete
  6. In his defense, those steps seem very steep.

  7. TJ: Does anyone know where to obtain video of Eric Bischoff revealing RAW spoilers? Was it done at the beginning of Nitro (so it'll be there when WWE posts the episode) or done right before the Nitro broadcast each week? I've never seen that footage before.

  8. Shane Douglas "This is it tonight, Dad. God, that's beautiful. And Rick Steamboat, and they can all kiss my ass!" -not a win per se but talk about putting a title over...

    Terry Funk at Barely Legal.

  9. With Davey's issues at the time, I don't think they would've\could've trusted him enough to make him such a key player on this card. But yes, that would've been a WAY better show.

  10. Because it was more of a PPV-level match and they weren't going to job Sid leading up to his title shot, so clearly the only result was Bigelow doing a job in the midst of what was supposed to be his big push, or a wacky non-finish. Thus, they shouldn't have even been put on TV together.

  11. He mentions them during entrances or matches. From what I could find doing a quick check of some Nitro reviews, these are the spoilers he gave in 1995 and 1996 (so these are on the Network):
    9/11/1995: spoils Sid/HBK during Sting/Wallstreet
1/1/1996: spoils Raw Bowl during Savage/Anderson and Benoit/Regal
2/26/1996: spoils multiple Raw matches during Big Bubba's entrance
4/22/1996: spoils multiple Raw matches during Public Enemy's entrance

  12. Did Skip do a top rope splash to the floor on Scotty 2 Hotty??

    ReplyDelete
  13. The good news: We don't disrespect legends. Usually.

The bad news: Kaptain Kiwi is no legend.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So I fight like a heel but job like a face? I'm a tweener on BoD RAW!

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Background Brawlers

    ReplyDelete
  16. The problem is that a good chunk of those guys were faces and in 1995 WWF, faces didn't fight each other.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bigelow turns on Diesel and there's your SummerSlam main event. Play the story of Bigelow aligned with Diesel to learn his weaknesses to beat him. Bigelow as a face didn't work because when he appeared with Diesel and Shawn, he was an awkward third wheel.

  18. I'll never forget the look on the Sandman's face when Vince walked by with the title around his waist. He probably wasn't acting.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That was a mind blowing match. It was the match where Diesel officially turned heel on HBK as well.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Actually, IRS final PPV appearance was as a lumberjack at the next In Your House.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What is your answer?

    ReplyDelete
  22. (White Coat Security is sitting in the back, and Bill Ray is rubbing his jaw.)

"Well, well. It seems the better man won tonight. Congratulations, Matt; Enjoy your moment. Oh, and also- normally, Miss Danielle, retribution would be swift on you and Marvelous Matt for that shot you gave me, but I like you two, so I'm letting it go."
(Average Joe Everyman starts to sing "Let It Go"; Bill stares at him until he stops)
Anyhow, we have bigger fish to fry. Midcard Mafia! Don't think we forgot about you! At BoD Night of Champions, we challenge you to a six-man elimination tag! No countouts! No DQs! No mercy! After running for so long, you will finally FEEL..THE....POWWWWWER!"
( Rockstar Gary and Joe Everyman start singing "Let It Go" together as Bill facepalms, and the camera cuts out)

  23. Same here except I was gonna say Zeke Jackson.

  24. If we're talking about any title change the took place in ECW the first one that comes to mind for me is Douglas winning the TV title in the show-long 4 way with Jericho, Pitbull, Scorpio as one of the greatest matches of the 90s.

If we're talking historic signifigance its obviously Douglas throwing down the NWA title. Off the top of my head I can't think of any great matches where the world title changed hands.

Some hornorable mentions if we count all titles: RVD-Bigelow and Guerrero-Malenko for the TV title. Dudleys-Eliminators and Dudleys vs Spiike&Balls (first flaming tables) for the tag titles. Also I would say Cena-RVD is an all-time classic if we count WWECW

  25. I'd like to see you lead an SSW invasion.

Pitbulls vs. Raven/Stevie Richards in the dog collar match? Isn't that the standard answer? I'll go with Mikey Whipwreck winning the ECW title during the three-way ladder match between Mikey-Sandman-Austin.

Did I get any of that right? It's been, like, 20 years. Where's my ECW DVD?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Mikey won the belt from Sandman in a singles ladder match. Austin just came down to the ring before the match to cut a promo on both guys then carried Woman off away from the match. Pretty sure the match itself was shit but Joey Styles sold the win like this huge inspirational moment

Damn, that's right. Still the one I'll go with.

RVD winning the TV title from Bam Bam Bigelow, just because it's the only one I saw in person.

  30. Open the show with a 15 minute irs vs mabel match too

    ReplyDelete
  31. The nearly 3 year Lawler vs Hart feud was all kinds of awesome and might be my favorite every. Lawler was such a piece of shit LOL. I'll never forget that Bam Bam vs Bret match on raw where all of a sudden Lawler is just up in the balcony harassing Brets mom and dad. I wish the wwe would develop another heel who was fun to hate like Lawler.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Damn Bulldog, but here the alternative:

    Half Final Match
    Bam Bam Bigelow vs Tatanka
Lex Luger vs Yokozuna (Jeff Jarret and Roadie helped Yoko against HBK)

    Final Match
    Lex Luger vs Tatanka

And this would actually a ton more sense than anything. Luger would get his revenge against Yoko, against Tatanka and he could then turn the RAW after the KOTR against Diesel. Or they team up at the next IYH against Sid and Tatanka and then Luger turning heel on Diesel for Summer Slam.

  33. I vaguely remember catching ONE major ECW TV show, maybe it's first
debut on TNN, where Dreamer won the title (for the first time I think?)
then a Justin Credible returned and screwed him out of it. I think Raven
popped up on that show for the first time in a bit, too.

    Otherwise, I don't remember much.

Raven beating the Sandman in the barbed wire match.

  35. All I have to say is that Bill is a man...who knows how to take a beating. Sure, we may have questionable tactics...we may play dirty...we may "influence" the situation...and Miss Danielle is the ace in my pocket. Even still, guys like Bill...they recognize and admire...the marvelousness. Bill! All I have to say is anytime you wanna run with us, you are more than welcome...for now, we have the title tourney and about three Divas reports to do that make everyone sick...but, when all that is set aside...you're free to be marvelous, too...

  36. The only ECW title change I saw was Douglas winning the NWA title and throwing it down.

  37. [It's Tuesday Night - you know what that means! It's BoD All-Star Wrestling LIVE from St. Paul Minnesota! Local crowd favorite Biscuit is in action against an up-and-coming blog lurker. He hits a standard bridging butterfly suplex for the pin, foregoing the usual superplex. Mikey O'Hurlihan is outside the ring]

Mikey: great win today for Biscuit over a game young competitor. Biscuit, what's been going on in the big wide world of the BoD?

Biscuit: thanks Mikey, love that tie. I love traveling the world for the BoD, but nothing is better than coming back home to Minnesota [studio crowd pops]

Before we talk about some really exciting news involving the C-List title, a big round of applause for my opponent! You're gonna go places! [crowd cheers]

    Mikey: what a graceful winner!

Biscuit: There's going to be a really great four-way title match coming up at Night of Champions between some great competitors like Night81, Mikey Mike, DBSM and yours truly, Biscuit!

Mikey: there have been some accusations made that you might have used a little bit of the rough stuff as you've wrestled your way into contention for the C-List title.

Biscuit: Unfortunately some of the big-city types who run the BoD didn't catch all the goings-on behind the scenes at the BoD. Some of the competitors use underhanded tactics, and like any good Minnesotan I fight fire with fire! I will NOT be intimidated!

I carry the torch of classic Minnesota wrestling with pride! Verne Gagne, Ric Flair, Nick Bockwinkel - I'm doing my very best to follow in the footsteps of these giants.

I don't want to make any promises, but I guarantee you'll see great effort and Minnesota pride. You kids at home might see your old pal Biscuit do some things that might seem against the rules, but rest assured I was pushed. Speaking of you kids, I can't wait to meet you kids at the Boys and Girls' Club this Friday for a special Bullyproof seminar!

Mikey: haha, sounds great Biscuit. I think I speak for every Minnesota fan when I say we're all pulling for you! [crowd cheers]

Biscuit: I won't let you down; thank you everyone!

  38. Is this the Rougeaus/Jerry Lawler heel nationally/face at home gimmick? Yes it is!

    ReplyDelete
  39. You could tell Sir Mo was pretty shaken up by the crowd while he tried to read off that scroll, lol. Why they couldn't find a better mouthpiece for Mabel, I don't know. They guy was headlining the second biggest PPV of the year and they cheap out with his ex-tag team partner. It would be like Marty Jannetty cutting HBK's promos back in 1992.
