Regarding Kurt Angle/WWE

So the latest dirtsheet reports are that Angle approached Triple H about returning and was pretty much brushed off. I don't get this?

I definitely like the way Triple H has been shaping the future, but he seems adamant about creating new homegrown stars and not bringing in people who may already have a name. Now, obviously Angle has had his demons. But he claims he's a year+ sober now. If the guy can pass the physical and the drug test, I feel like they'd be foolish not to bring him in.

Guys like Bully Ray, Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, etc. all could be hugely beneficial to WWE, but dirtsheets are constantly reporting WWE doesn't have an interest in them. It's really stupid to me. Of course you have to plan for the future with your new stars, but I still feel it's foolish to pass up on proven talent that can make an initial impact and then use their star power to help build your young guys.

With Kurt Angle alone, you have the perfect built-in mini-feud with Rusev, one of the only guys they can market as a believable threat to Lesnar, and a dozen fresh match combinations with guys like Ambrose, Rollins, Ziggler, Sheamus, Wyatt, Cesaro, and Bryan, etc. And several of those could reasonably be called dream matches to some fans and Angle has enough legitimacy built up that putting over some of those guys would help them tremendously.

Why the hell would you not bring him in on a part-time schedule, get all those matches out of him, then throw him in the HOF?

Because one of these days he seems likely to implode once and for all and end up dead in a ditch somewhere, and you probably don't want him on your payroll when that happens.  Plus it's been nearly a decade since he was last part of the promotion and they've done nothing to keep his name alive since then, so there's very little name value left as far as upside.  You might as well just stick someone else under the Patriot mask and have him oppose Rusev if you're going that route.  I absolutely agree with the decision not to bring Angle in.  He made his own bed here.

I think if Angle's music hits the place would go nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Agreed. He is a potential liability they just don't need. Same with Jeff Hardy. They would add almost nothing to the current product and they are both very risky choices to have on the payroll.

  3. Well OF COURSE a Canadian doesn't want to see an AMERICAN HERO back in the company!

LOL @ someone thinking Bully Ray and Samoa Joe, two fat washed up clowns, would benefit WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I wouldn't mind seeing Angle back to face Bryan, Cesaro, and maybe Rusev but that's it. Jeff and Bully I could take or leave. AJ doesn't need WWE now and good for him. Joe I'd like to see though.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Bobby Roode is the only TNA guy I'd bother signing at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  7. To be safe I'd hold off his return till they were in Pittsburgh. And make sure he'd confront Rusev.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Is Angle really that bad off at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Angle is a living Benoit.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I was a huge Kurt Angle fan back in the day...so while I would love to see him back, his health is more important.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hogan comes back. Bears Rusev in a Rocky III like fashion. Cena comes out to congratulate Hogan afterwards. Hogan takes offense to Cena, "stealing his shine." This leads to the Hogan - Cena dream match that Cena needs to feel like a big boy. It also gets Rusev set up to settle in to his role of mid card comedy face who LOVES America and has also learned to dance. "HE'S DANCING MAAAAGGLE!!! HE GOT NO SHOES, BUT HE DANCING!!! HAHAHAHA!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  12. What Canadian are you talking about, friend?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Absolutely. 17 DUI's. Multiple charges of stalking woman. The guy is a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  14. As far as WWE wanting to be associated with the name goes, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If he was still that bad off you'd think something would have happened by now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Interesting to see Scott be so dead wrong on an issue. Angle has huge value. Just as much if not more as Sting or Jeff Hardy. To compare his value to an unknown under a mask is silly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Um...lots of things HAVE happened already.

    ReplyDelete
  18. he does NOT have 17 DUIS

    ReplyDelete
  19. I meant on a Benoit level.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Angle has huge NEGATIVE value, worse than having no value at all.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not arguing his personal life, but to say that he has no name value in the current WWE is simply wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We will never know what triggered such an extreme act. For all we know, the same trigger would push Angle over a well.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Scott is 100 percent right on this. Whatever value Angle has, which is negligible, his outweighed by the fact that he's a walking death watch

    ReplyDelete
  24. Multiple DWIs, domestic incidents, trips to rehab?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sting is a guy you can bring in and do some wholesome family TV. Can't believe that amazing video game commercial is all we've gotten. I'd love to be a fly on the wall during Stobg and Vince discussing the possibilities if Sting coming into WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He got 3 more just last night!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Geez. The guy is a walking Benoit. Smarks are already starting to apologize in advance for him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Angle's almost in Jake and Hall territory now. Who would an Olympic gold medalist to OD under contract?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Abdullah the Butcher has name value, but it can't be used in a positive way by a publicly traded company.

    Same with Angle.

    ReplyDelete
  30. again, I can see arguments both ways on the risks involved in bring him in. However Scott insinuated that he had no name value, which I take issue with. If BIlly fucking Gunn has name value or Kevin Nash, then so does Kurt Angle. Whether the WWE has mentioned him much or not, he's all over the biggest moments on the Network.

    ReplyDelete
  31. you are just being ridiculous now. You know damn well Angle has 100 times the name value to the current audience as Abdullah. He was an integral part of the main event scene for years. Abdullah hasn't been relevant since a short run in WCW in 92 and really relevant in 40 years.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Billy Gunn has name value? The Outlaws do, sure, but look what happened when they booked them as more than a nostalgia act

    ReplyDelete
  33. he apparently did have enough to get a short contract and run out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Key being "in a positive way".

    ReplyDelete
  35. oh god are we really doing the anti-smark gimmick? I thought that was Vince and Dougies deal. Asking for legit facts in a discussion is not the same as apologizing in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And it sucked. Angle was so fucked up that despite being the #1 guy in a fledgling brand....they fired him.

He's a ticking time bomb. Why would you even think to bring him back?

    ReplyDelete
  37. He ain't your friend, buddy?

    ReplyDelete
  38. He's been arrested for drunk driving four times!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think I'm arguing something different than others though. Again, not taking a side signing him or not signing him. I'm taking issue with Scott's ridiculous notion that because WWE hasn't really mentioned him in 10 years (actually 8), his name value is zero and not worth anything more than a masked nobody. Not arguing whether the masked nobody is a better risk for a publicly traded company, simply arguing that saying Angle has limited name value is stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  40. not arguing that. Please read my posts.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If I've offended you in any way I am VERY sorry. Would you accept my apology is I agree to delete my inflammatory posts and agree to only discuss WWE?

    ReplyDelete
  42. thank you. And as someone who's wife was hit by a drunk driver and can't ride amusement park rides or do 15 minutes of weeding in the yard without suffering and having to take a muscle relaxer later, I have no sympathy for drunk drivers. But I do have sympathy for facts in a discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You are saying that, for every one person that knows Abdullah the Butcher, there are a hundred that know Kurt Angle?

    And you call ME ridiculous!?

    ReplyDelete
  44. of today's fans? Sure. I can guarantee you that for every one person who has seen an Abdullah match (and most would be the WCW stuff with Cactus Jack) 100 have seen an Angle match. Abdullah was about the most transient of the special attractions in the territory days before most of today's fans were born. Almost zero of his matches are on the network and he never appeared in Vince's WWF (not sure about WWWF with Vince Sr.).

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now Skeeter, he ain't hurting nobody.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't think he has as much name value as you think he does, so I think we're on the agree to disagree field. Any name value he possibly has is outweighed by the wikipedia section labelled legal issues.

    And sorry about your wife.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Really though he does have enough where a non celeb would be looking at some pretty decent jail time. Kudos to his lawyer for keeping him out altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, I'm Team Scott on this one. Angle has been gone since 2006, and they've done jack shit to keep his name alive in the fans' minds. It's not like no one will know who he is if they bring him out for a surprise run-in, but I feel like a lot of the fans they've got today might not understand why it's such a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Angle has been one if the best in the world for so long now that it's hard to even imagine him with hair anymore. Some of my favorite angle memories:

The time with Shelton and Hass. Team Abgle was just amazing. A great time to be alive.

WM22. I was there live and I booed Rey Rey with all my heart and cheered for Kurt like the hero he was. Not a great match, but a great live experience. You can never convince me Rey winning was the right move there.

He had a cage match with Edge on Smackdown. That match really warms my heart. I have a sense of nostalgia for that match for the sense of nostalgia I got watching it for the first time and thinking of how much it reminded me of watching Bossman Hogan on the cage as a child. Just tremendous stuff from two of the best to ever do it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. sadly you would be amazed how lenient some judges are on DUIs. I've seen it from both sides with an Uncle who had a bunch (but did eventually do a year or two in the pen) and a wife who got hit by a 7 time offender who kept getting let off by judges stuck in the 40s with a "boys will be boys" attitude about the offense.

    ReplyDelete
  51. thank you. and yeah we can agree to disagree. I see him as in that 2nd tier with Edge/Orton/Eddie G., etc. behind Austin/rock/HHH/UT/Foley.

    ReplyDelete
  52. A fledging brand? That's debatable.

    ReplyDelete
  53. He is nowhere close to how bad they were. C'mon now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The one who owns and operates this site?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't get WWE's policy of no old guys. Even if a guy is 36 with only two good years left, you're still getting two good years. The expectation of signing 24 year olds who will stick around for 10 plus years is idiotic.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Also you spend 9 of those 10 years burying the 24 year old with 50-50 booking.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Also loved that massive Angle chant during Orton/Cena at Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Exactly. If you're gonna invest in a youth movement, actually INVEST!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I get DUIs all the time! I woke up this morning and got a DUI and look at me, I'm jumping around and I'm fine!

    ReplyDelete
  60. He ain't my buddy, pal.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm not your pal, guy.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Enough value for them to use him to sell the network.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It was one of the podcasts (Austin, Jericho, or Ross) with DDP where I think DDP said that HHH told him in regards to trying to get Jake in HOF & Jake wanting to come back and make a Rumble match cameo that they had a policy of you having to be sober a certain length of time for them to bring you in.

I want to say it was like a year, but I'm not sure if that was just a year for HOF and longer for actually coming back. It's been a while since I heard it.

Anyway, how long has Angle been sober? Hasn't it only been like six months?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Angle's music was far more over than Angle himself was. Witness the dramatic drop in fan interest once they mixed out the "You Suck!" part.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Angle and AJ are the only two with a drop of value. Bully Ray, Samoa Joe and Jeff Hardy are worse than worthless by now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I can understand not bringing back Angle or the Hardys for drug/alcohol concerns, and I can even understand not hiring guys like AJ or Joe because they're *never* seemed interested in them, but I'd kind of like to see the Dudleys get a final nostalgia run in WWE before retiring and maybe going into the Hall of Fame.

    ReplyDelete
  67. If they were interested in working with Angle, it really sets up perfectly:
Rusev beats Mark Henry this month
Rusev beats Big Show next month.
Rusev issues an open challenge at Survivor Series, Angle comes out to a massive pop, makes him tap.
Fatal Fourway at the December PPV which Angle wins (throw Cena, Orton,& whoever in ther)
Angle vs. Lesnar at the Rumble. Lesnar wins.

That would be an awesome sidebar on the path to mania. And Angle/Lesnar is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    ReplyDelete
  68. No old guys? The Old Age Outlaws had a run with the tag titles!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not to twist what you are saying around, but I put no stock in any of the chants. It's a bored crowd that wants to amuse itself so while they may start with a smark darling, they still end up chanting for Savage for no adequate reason or even JBL.

And people wonder why some in WWE believed that the reason people where cheering for Bryan was because they liked doing "YES!"

    ReplyDelete
  70. He has SOME atleast. Stop being ridiculous

    ReplyDelete
  71. Dudleys have a drop of value as a team to get Usos/Wyatts over.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Are you the Haas or the Benjamin of Team Scott?
