September Classics: The Pitbulls vs. Raven & Stevie Richards - September 16, 1995

Greatest match in ECW history? It is certainly on a lot of people's lists, and this came at the peak of ECW's popularity. Back in 1995, ECW was offering something different than the stale WWF and Hogan-riffic WCW. Back in the day, a friend tried to introduce me to ECW by showing me this match. Not a bad idea, at the time.

  1. THIS is how you properly overbook a match. The crowd pop of 911 hitting Alphonso with the greatest choke-slam ever is still fantastic, wonderful how it all works together.

  2. I'm thinking Scott reviewing this one again would not go fully monty.

  3. I think this is a pretty good match in e scheme of things, but what makes/made it a full monty affair is knowing its context - watching all these storylines develop from show to show and on ECW TV etc. No way it's ***** without all that.

  4. I'm certainly not the foremost ECW favorite but I saw this for the first time on the Rise and Fall of ECW DVD when that came out ten years ago and I have absolutely no idea why this match is well liked. I've seen better throwaway garbage matches on forgotten Raws.

  5. The match itself was not *****, but the angles were epic. Only thing was, things were status quo again shortly after (Raven and Stevie took the belts back, Fonzie was still around...)

I always looked at this as one of those non workrate ***** matches. Where you are enjoying it go its maximum amount anyway.

  7. Raven getting his head bounced off the edge of the table was cringe worthy. I've always loved the match otherwise though.

  8. Way to clog up the front page of the site and push Bayless' shoot review way down the page ON PURPOSE!

    ASSHOLE!

That makes me wonder, what other matches do you think he would upgrade and downgrade from the full 5? I think he'd give it to the first Cena vs Lesnar now, and the Shield debut at TLC seeing as how effective it was in the long run on top of being awesome.

  10. His description of the backstage reaction to that botch is quite the gem:

    "Oh my god he's dead!"

    (Raven kicks out at two)

    "Nah, he's fine."
