September Classics: Taz vs. Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka - ECW Anarchy Rulez '99

Taz was ECW champ coming in to this match, but the news got out that he had signed with the WWF. The ECW crowd responds to him here as expected. The first few moments of this clip are most interesting, Taz makes an early exit, and we're left with our typical excellent Tanaka vs. Awesome match.

  1. "Taz is going to work for someone that may actually pay him! Boo!"

  2. Not sure if there was more to the story, but I never liked the way Taz dropped the belt here after being built like an unstoppable killing machine. They should have waited till November for Taz to drop the title to RVD.

  3. The match for Anarchy Rulz was originally just Taz v. Masato Tanaka for the ECW Title. They changed it to a three way dance once it was found out that Taz was leaving and Paul E. presumably didn't want the title match finish to be a foregone conclusion. I would assume that's why he took the belt off Taz before November to Remember 99.

Granted, I think that's poor logic on Paul E.'s part (assuming that was his thought process) and I think he would have been better off just putting the belt on RVD at November to Remember 99 but whatever.

  4. Yeah, the mindset of the ECW fans was bizarre to say the least.

  5. This one of the most surreal moments of my lifetime. Watching ECW fans turn on Taz, seeing Taz get eliminated the way he was and hugging Heyman afterwards, the ECW locker room coming out to watch two guys that were barely part of the promotion take a rub from the best built guy in the promotion. It was just crazy.

Another good one was when 2 Cold Scorpio was leaving. He said if anyone could beat him he'd leave ECW for (I believe it was) 2 years. Taz came out a squashed him and said, "So long, Flash." in reference to the Flash Funk character he became in the WWF.

A random thought here: Paul Heyman may not know how to pay people, but he knows how to work with wrestlers with MMA backgrounds and bad haircuts to make them look like unstoppable monsters.

I just accept the fact that the ECW crowd just liked to chant things.

  9. The crowd was as much of the show as the wrestlers.

I never understood why people say TNA try to be like the WWE when they have always given off a ECW feel.

  11. I'd say TNA gives off more of a WCW feel.
