Trump Plaza closing

Here is a link to the article, but since this place is closing, and was home to two of my favorite events, could you post a re-rant on WrestleManias IV and V? Or a Scott Sez?

Meltzer actually talked about this, and Trump Plaza was apparently declared a landmark or historical site or something and thus won't be bulldozed at least.

And I have seriously watched WM4 and 5 enough times for any one lifetime, 4 in particular.  But here's the Scott Sez versions of them:

Comments

  1. Trump Plaza is the casino, and I assume that Trump gave them money to refer to the connected arena as such as well. The arena is actually Boardwalk Hall and is the site of plenty of events, including concerts, boxing, and yes, WWE. It will still exist and host events, though the obvious decline of the city will perhaps dissuade promoters and organizers in the future.

Wait....no. That's where Randy won his title, (and yes Hogan took it back from him a year later )

Back in 07 my ex girlfriend and I were walking on the Boardwalk of Atlantic. We came across the Convention Hall and I said 'THATS WHERE THE MEGAPOWERS EXLPODED!" She looked at me like I was an idiot.....we are no longer a couple.

  4. Now the site of three consecutive Wrestlemanias are no more.

  5. Of course she did. The explosion happened elsewhere.

What the FUCK are you talking about/

  7. The Boardwalk in Atlantic City is getting decimated. In the past year, the Atlantic Club (formerly the Hilton), Revel (one of the few casinos in history to ever go broke), the Showboat (one of my favorite places, and one that was still profitable when Caesar's announced it wasn't making enough money), and now Trump Plaza have all announced closings. It's no wonder New Jersey is in such a hurry to legalize sports gambling; the remaining casinos need miracles, and quickly.

    You from jersey?

  9. Upstate New York; grew up about an hour and a half north of New York City and lived in Albany for a few years before relocating to Southern California. Spent several weekends in Atlantic City with my now ex-wife; shame what's happening to it.

It's cool bro I get you....Keep this in mind..No one is allowed to insult Jersey unless you are FROM Jersey

  11. The Taj Mahal--Atlantic City's other most famous hotel/casino--is also shutting its doors. It was the site of the inaugural WBF PPV.

Atlantic City, which once had a glamour rep, has apparently turned into a total shithole. At one time it had a monopoly on casino gambling on the East Coast, but there's no more reason to travel there and not to Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and various other casino hotspots that have cropped up in the past 20 years.

Yes....the explosion happened at Giants Stadium. And we both love the New York Giants to the end. So do that math.

  13. I seriously disagree with you regarding the rating for the Haku v Hercules match..definitely underrated. Not the most underrated 'hoss' match (that would be reserved for Bossman v Barbarian from RR91) but I'd put it at *** 1/2, and was definitely not terrible.

  14. AC has always been a shithole save for the boardwalk and small section of the Marina. It's not the rep that's killing it. It's, as you said, the oversaturation of casinos and the fact that you don't need to go there to gamble anymore if you're from several neighboring states.

  15. I have a friend from Jersey, and we insult Jersey all the time.

    ALL THE TIME.

Fun fact: it's free to cross into Jersey from PA, but costs $4 to get out. It'd be a steal at twice the proce!

  16. No, the explosion was at WrestleMania V.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Donald Trump doesn't own either Trump Plaza or the Taj Mahal anymore, they're run by a group that bears his name and pays him for use of the name but that's about it as far his connection to the AC area. And he's actually suing them because the casinos have fallen into a state of disrepair.

  18. Wrestlemania IV and Wrestlemania V are two my personal favorites also (especially the latter), straight nostalgia 100 percent.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah its not closing. But the majority of the casinos there already have

    ReplyDelete
  20. I suppose I should have clarified that my knowledge of Atlantic City's "glamour" extends to WrestleManias 4 and 5 and those old Telly Savalas commercials for whatever-the-fuck, but always mentioned Vegas and AC as if they were equivalent (your definition of "glamour" as it relates to Vegas may vary).

  21. Two of my favorite events for sure. Sad day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's awful there. They opened up this gigantic new one two years ago and they just closed it. There were rumors years ago that the state was gonna step in and help them all but it never happened. The newer casinos in the north east devastated nj. Not stronger than that storm

    ReplyDelete
  23. Right. I assume he was more involved in the late 80s when he was showing up at the events (and that was the time frame that I was referring to him "giving money" to refer to the arena as Trump Plaza, when as far as I know that was never its official name).

    ReplyDelete
  24. 5 casinos closing out of 12 is awful, but not the majority.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Boardwalk Hall, which is where both Manias actually were set (the "Trump Plaza" deal was just the sponsor) is not going anywhere. That's where Miss America is held. But still an awful, awful year for Atlantic City.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jeeez why are people being so picky about this. I'm from the area. I've seen this shit going down for years. This isn't the end, more will be gone soon.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love Atlantic City but you're right...it's been a shithole for years. Anybody could have told the city that building a luxury casino and putting it AWAY from the shopping and major foot traffic was a dumb idea at best, and that dumb idea just closed its doors at the beginning of the month and the city is now on the hook for something like $300 million. Atlantic City is NOT Vegas...I don't understand how that fact continuously escapes the people who run the city

    ReplyDelete
  28. How has nobody mentioned that the crowds for both 'Manias sucked something terrible?

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's free to get into PA if you take 95 south from Ewing

    ReplyDelete
  30. Both of those matches are good, with the RR 91 match being really good. One of the Barbarian's best matches ever, and definitely one of the better Bossman matches.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Match was also ahead of it's time. Both men kicked out of each other's finishers, and Bossman won by rolling through a Barbarian flying bodypress to win...which sounds mindboggling on paper, but when you see the match itself, you see two guys working their ass off as much as any smaller guy known for their work rate. I'd go **** easily.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sigh... the look on Hogan's face as he comes down the aisle with Liz at IV. That, and Macho winning the strap have to be my favorite two moments from TP.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not to mention that even with all of the decorations the building still looked like a bigger cesspool than the ECW Arena in Philly.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Speaking of Meltzer, he posted an old Observer covering the Canadian Stampede PPV, and he only gave the 10 man ****1/4. I just don't get it. I can totally see not giving it the full 5 stars, but 4 and a quarter seems really low to me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm not questioning the problems of Atlantic City, I'm just questioning your math.

    5/12 isn't the majority. 7/12 is.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, they just anounced that the Taj is closing too, so soon Trump will have his name on nothing in AC.

Still pissed off that one of his earlier bankruptcies hurt a cousin of mine who had a printing company.

  37. Between that and the Silverdome, are we going to have to now worry about defunct venues along with dead performers in older WMs?
