WWE Primer article

AV Club dipping their toes yet again. I am always afraid to read the comments on these things--just for my own aggravation, but they usually tend to be MOSTLY okay.

Article is fine, (though Masked Man does this stuff way better). Not sure why they skewed so modern, instead of a blend of classic eras and now. But whatever.

http://www.avclub.com/article/and-s-bottom-line-beginners-guide-wwe-208833

Yeah, that's a decidedly modern look at the product.  I'd never recommend someone jump in too heavily right now because three hours is a HUGE commitment unless you're already invested.  I'd say NXT is a better starting place, personally.  Or even going back to 93 and watching the old RAWs in order, where you get the serialized aspect and can binge on it.

Although one of the best comments in that article was the guy who said that wrestling fandom is like being in an abusive relationship where every once in a while the abuser grabs you by the neck and yells WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE in your face, and even though you don't have a good answer you still stay anyway.

Comments

  1. Regular. Namely, the one HBK gave to Undertaker in the Hell in a Cell match on the ring steps. Sick

    ReplyDelete
  2. People who have actually been in abusive relationships might feel it's trivializing it to have people use that as an analogy for every little thing, so I can see the criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The fact you still don't think there could be a problem...just maybe...is crazy.

  4. Ugghhh, calling people marks? You gonna wisen me up to THIS BUSINESS, brutha?
    ANYWAY....

The wrestlers absolutely have something to do with the quality of the product. Yes, the majority of why TNA sucks is because their owner, their creative, their production, and their marketing have been awful. But you're telling me that across 10 years none of these guys have been talented enough to rise above that, based on their mic or in ring abilities? It's completely everyone else's fault that this TV show has been god awful, not theirs at all?

Let's take AJ Styles for instance. Last year he seemed to have an open range to go out there on TV and cut long promos to get himself and his BFG match over. And what happened? He absolutely, 100% sucked a fat dick out there. Because he's just not that good at it.

Lots of TNA guys have had their chances--- and yes, booking and management fails them all the time. But have they really shown an undeneiable skill at this? To me, not especially, at least not most of them. And the ones who are good at it will hopefully find jobs in the business, or help create new jobs within a better run wrestling company.

Well, that's part of the problem: it's possible that TNA has poisoned the marketplace to the point that no other outlet will want to air a professional wrestling product, no matter how well the company may be run or how talented the wrestlers are. WWE is the New York Yankees to TNA's Toledo Mud Hens, and they still have trouble getting timeslots even after decades of a proven track record.

    ReplyDelete
  6. What alternatives though? ROH? Everything else below that and you have no tv at all.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I loved the one Luger did 91/92 when he really nailed it. Hold a guy for a moment and then spike him on his head.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Exactly. Someone shitty at running a wrestling company might not get to run a wrestling company anymore. Everyone should hopefully figure out what they're good at, and the people who work at TNA just aren't good at this.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Given that AJ is killing it in NJPW and proving he can be a world champion on a truly national stage.

I'm not sure he is the example you want to use of a guy who didn't have the talent, rather then suffering by virtue of LOLTNA

    Extra crispy.

  11. You only hear what you want to hear. I said that was a mark statement, and it was. I didn't call you a mark. "If only AJ Styles could get his personality over on tv, TNA would be in better shape!!!!" Is a ridiculous statement. How about if we saw one damn commercial for TNA in the last 10 years?

They ask Kurt Angle where he's been the last 8 years for fuck's sake! Kurt Angle! This is the problem. ..not how Kurt is portrayed, but what fucking channel he's on. This is a management issue, not a talent issue.

Remember AJ as the "new Nature Boy"? That's when I gave up on him. He absolutely excels at the physical part of wrestling, but he's clueless about everything else. I mean, the guy wouldn't even dye his hair to emulate the (arguable) G.O.A.T. who was giving him the rub. Absolutely clueless.

    ReplyDelete
  13. And people who have suffered anything ever might find anything ever trivializing.

It was a joke, and there's way too many horrible things on planet earth for me to support getting bent out of shape over something so benign

    ReplyDelete
  14. Worse than Sydal?

    Cuz that shit was horrendous!

If I had paid for that, I would email and complain but you know... stole it, whatevz.

I did download Clay's though, it is on my watch list but if you say its as bad, then i can wait.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're getting bent out of shape right now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. TNA is not that smart

    ReplyDelete
  17. Casting AJ as the new nature boy was retarded for MANY reasons.

Not only is AJ better at the "other stuff" now, he doesn't look awkward and forced all the time in the Bullet Club.

You have to book talent to their strengths.

    ReplyDelete
  18. RVD for 99 should be good cuz at least he was on top during that year.

My biggest concerns for the timeline series is like we spoke about with mid-lower level talent talking about big years.

    Morlet/Kishi/FUCKING IVORY WWF 99-01 respectively.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No I'm not saying he doesn't have talent, it was just an example of how talent has affected the quality of the TNA product. (Whereas Mattindeed said nothing was their fault.) Yeah AJ Styles is a great in ring worker, but he sucks a huge dick at other aspects of wrestling, and that affects the quality of teh product, and last year's awful "wannabe CM Punk" promo run from AJ was an example of that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Raven would be awesome for 96.

He didnt leave until mid 97.

    ReplyDelete
  21. he always did that to Taker but I dont remember him ever doing it to anybody else, always looked, and sounded, sick.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sad to see TNA go if they are really going, but they've been circling the drain a long time now.

The one thing I'll be curious to see is if another promotion can step into their place as a TV wrestling promotion, with a slick looking show. There are lots of alternatives for actual wrestling content, but I don't think you'll see another promotion on a major network without production standards at a certain level and that's probably what's going to be challenging to any promotion without a big budget.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "The WWE has told it's distributors to go into heavy production of Austin's merchandise"

...which probably means they want to leech off of Austin's continued popularity ,and the large amount of people asking him for Steve Austin Show gear.

No, he's coming back, for sure this time.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Meh, maybe slightly curved in shape.

But mostly I'm just writing a philosophy paper, I don't have time to bend into aggravated contortions

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rikishi Driver would have been really sweet if the other guys head ever got withing a foot of the mat. I also love the version in the N64 games where you pick the guy up like for a bodyslam and then rotate him into a tombstone. Best part was I think it was a weak grapple move.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Going a little sideways, that's been one of the biggest criticisms TNA has gotten. You have these different talents, ones WWE doesn't want or know about, and you try to do "WWE-Lite" with them?

Yeah, that's just stupid, asinine, idiotic, and feel free to add your own descriptors now.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can't find it in me to feel bad for the company. The talent, maybe a little.

In a year, we'll know just HOW badly they fucked up in that place.

    ReplyDelete
  28. TNA has put themselves out of business, if that happens. It's glaringly obvious.

Does it suck that there won't be another promotion? Of course, but all the good talent will pop up elsewhere, that's how it works.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my god, those are the worst kind of papers, too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If the TNA talent were better at their jobs, then the product would be improved, yes. I'm not saying it's all the wrestlers' fault--- obviously Dixie, Russo, the rest of their management and marketing teams have all been about as incompetent as humanely possible, and that's mainly why the company has been so piss poor. Yes, it's mostly management's fault.

But let's not give the talent roster a totally free pass and say that they've had zero to do with TNA being such a horrible product for 10 years.

    ReplyDelete
  31. those are all bad

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sydal's was bad but the questions asked on that were unfiltered and really bad too.
Brodus had decent questions that he refused to answer. He wouldn't even play the gimmick bag game

    ReplyDelete
  33. Who knows for sure, but at least this is actual news and somewhat interesting.

I'll pay attention to Raw when he shows up. But after a month, I'm sure I'll be meh as Vince and "creative" are still there. Unless Austin is willing to go to bat for the entire roster, nothing changes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was only comparing football success, not the university overall.

Even when WWE's "not good", they're still a "division" above the rest, while TNA occasionally had "success" in their little sphere, they've generally been quite "not good".

(In my example, ROH would be someone like Appalachian State (top of the Indies, but not quite ready for even TNA's "level", with the Indies roaming between a Nicholls State (poor 1-AA/FCS) and some random DIII school only its students and alums have heard of. GFW is currently that fake university in that movie whose name I cannot remember.)

(Also, I learned there are three Shits in Iran today. SUCCESS!)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Owen Hart, Summerslam '96. Looked like it damn near crippled the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pretty much. I want him to stay as far away from their "creative" process as possible. I don't need to see Austin look like shit, having to deal with the micro-managed garbage they feed him. I mean, he'd would hopefully get a lot of leeway, but even then, it wouldn't be Stone Cold.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Some people rather be angry, because they can be "snarky" and everyone likes that, right?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Assuming you don't work in wrestling, and assuming that everything you said is true, I still don't get why you would personally care one way or the other.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I won't disagree, but I just wanna mention that Ivory might be the most underrated WWF/WWE diva of all time, when it comes to hotness. Seems like nobody ever noticed her, but DAMN, what a body.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but is the reason why people stick with the WWE despite not enjoying it due to a strong bond formed in childhood? I've been wondering about this a lot because I didn't grow up a wrestling fan. I came to it in high school or college or whenever it was when the nWo formed and Austin started fighting with Tyson. I mean, I watched it a bit as a kid, but I was definitely not a fan. So, I see all these people who are really upset by it and I've been trying to figure out why they stick with it. My guess is it's due to a long-term love.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm not out there picketing in the streets, I'm commenting about it on a wrestling board in a thread which had this as a news item. So i think the level to which I care is appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sydal's questions were definitely filtered. Not to the point of Russo or Dixie's but they were definitely screened as far as twitter is concerned.

I knew for some reason that Clay would be a bitch. Something about him just gives off the "im not a badass vibe"

I wouldnt go up to him and talk shit, mind you, but from the safety of my keyboard, he seems like a bitch when it comes to wrestling politics

    ReplyDelete
  43. Steen, KENTA, Devitt, and let's say Zayn are all free agents. They could all sign, as a group, to one of two places. TNA or NXT. (And in this scenario, let's imagine TNA has a TV deal and will keep operating under Dixie Carter as is.)

As a fan, where would you rather watch them for the next 1-2 years? Would you rather watch those talented wrestlers be booked and showcased on the NXT show or the TNA show? Taking an eventual promotion up to WWE out of the equation. Which show would they be used better on?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Take several deep breaths.

    Now relax.

    Now...TNA is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He's come back in non wrestling roles probably a dozen times, so I have no doubt there's a strong chance this is true. He just won't be wrestling a match ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Not really... it has been like nine months and there has been zero movement besides talk of a training school and "partnerships" with worldwide promotions and talent exchanges. Just seems like a hustle on the surface, that is all.

    ReplyDelete
  47. As I've said before, it would not shock me if Jarrett's just waiting on TNA to die before he cherry picks from their remains for his core. Otherwise, there's just not enough out there to go on IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  48. He must have missed the Shane Douglas "Burning all your bridges" seminar.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is a pretty good primer to his mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Tombstone is one of the worse piledrivers.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The one were it's the regular version, but you just drop onto your knees like a tombstone. Soooo unsafe.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Good call, it's mostly socks anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The second half of a weekly pro-wrestling show was apparently equivalent to a "Warzone" for them so why don't we all just agree to let exaggerated metaphors be ok

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wrestling as a pop culture attraction is in a pretty deep slump right now. Most of the blame for that has to be laid on WWE given its market dominance. Some of it is a natural decline from the peak of the Attitude Era. And I do think some of it can be blamed on TNA for delivering a product so consistently terrible and misguided. It does suck that a lot of people may soon be out of work, but mourning the loss of TNA as an alternative to WWE is pointless because the company itself gave up on that idea years ago when it foolishly thought it could compete with WWE. By being much like WWE. Only worse. With cast-off WWE talent. And creative from a company WWE put out of business.

TNA may find a way to survive into 2015, but it won't succeed & flourish. Anyone thinking otherwise is foolish.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This, there is some serious delusion in saying they're putting on "good shows".

    ReplyDelete
  56. Steve Austin almost got his neck crushed the same night... by Yokozuna

    ReplyDelete
  57. DON'T take something a wrestling reporter say as gospel???!!!! You mean it's not? I wish you'd have said something sooner! All those years I've spent praying to Moondog Rex... wasted.

I guess I need to rethink a lot of things in my life now

    ReplyDelete
  58. Austin has walked away over that before and would easily do so again, especially given that he's not (to my knowledge) under contract to them at all. If/When he shows up, it's gonna be to do what he wants to do the way he wants to do it. He wouldn't be coming back otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I bet a special guest referee in a WrestleMania match will happen

    ReplyDelete
  60. Seriously, was that the planned finish? Or did Yoko really get "Turnbuckles cannot hold him up" level fat?

    ReplyDelete
  61. They've been putting on "acceptable wrestling shows" lately. And I would be willing to argue that an individual Impact has beaten an individual RAW from a "one-off show" viewpoint.

BUT: Even if we disagree with WWE's current direction (feuds/pushes/content), they are at least stable as regards to the talent/TV/business end, to where they won't lose a feud unless an injury happens.

TNA, on the other hand, seems to have NO direction, other than "please don't die, please don't die", at this point even risking their next (last?) PPV just to avoid spoilers/contract issues/etc...

    ReplyDelete
  62. He's said as much several times on his show, so i'm not too worried about him showing up and being the New Years baby.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm not well versed enough in wrestling lore to even think of discussing it. Generally speaking, I've found the most engaging writers have a shaky grasp on the history and research side of what they're discussing. There was a DJ out of the Bay Area who wrote columns I really enjoyed until I figured out he didn't really know what he was talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  64. He did correct himself on the Cheap Heat podcast about Furnas and Lafon being Frenchmen. I guess I don't mind him because I'm not necessarily counting on the guy to be a wrestling historian, more just someone who presents the product as they know it to be, based on the rumors and things they've read over time. Let's face it, just because it comes from Meltzer or Keller doesn't mean it's always true, so most of "wrestling history" is based in speculation anyways.

A lot of the charm of listening to wrestling podcasts and reading wrestling columnists, for me, is how they recall the product and react to things that I also recall and react to in certain ways. I'm not listening to or reading Shoemaker to get factual accuracy necessarily on years and dates and times, it's more to get a personal perspective from a guy who is good at writing. I don't agree with him all the time, but I'm not going to harp on his factual inaccuracies, though I can see why they'd be irksome to some fans.

  79. That's fair. I just think if Grantland is going to do a smart guy using big words talking about wrestling column, they should get someone who knows what they are talking about.

"Right now, TNA does not have any scheduled domestic events for the rest of 2015."

I'm sure someone else below has commented on this, but it bears noticing again.

Bwahahah, what a typo! And some people will say, "That wasn't a typo."

    Funny, funny.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Gotta get that last word in.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Why are you assuming it would be a bad segment? TNA has had some kickass shows for the better part of the year. NXT has had some horrible episodes this year. Both NXT and TNA have had good and bad.

Why do you ask a question if you don't like one of the answers?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Well there won't be any new Frank Zappa music. There aren't any new TV westerns. So you can't dive into the "current product" for those. You can look at it as a whole. With Pro Wrestling, that whole is always evolving, and they're trying to get people into it via a gateway that is the current product. I think they nailed it. I can't think of a better gateway than Mania XXX, which had legends, current stars, and pretty great matches all around, into the world of current pro wrestling.

  94. "TNA just because the shows are 2 hours instead of 1." That was your answer, and it was silly as hell.
Just like your constant weird defense, despite everything that's ACTUALLY happening, of everything TNA. It's just ridiculous, what can I say.

    ReplyDelete
  95. No I didn't. Read my comments again, take what was actually said in them, and stop twisting my words around to suit your idiotic statements.

"Management is all that matters with regards to how well the product STANDS up." BEFORE people see AJ Styles fucking tank a promo, they have to actuallly KNOW where AJ Styles will be tanking said promo. Considering for 10 YEARS NOW, TNA has had SPECIFICALLY 1.0-.15 million viewers and it HASN'T CHANGED....this means the SAME PEOPLE watch it repeatedly. If the viewership went UP to 2.0, and then DROPPED again, then you could blame that on the writing and the talent. But Spike has never seen ratings like that for even 15 minutes with TNA because TNA Management.

Again, I agree with you that the product is mostly terrible. I don't even watch it. But the main ingredient for the failure is the absolute abortion at the top.

I always hated the way Flair turns to the side at the last second when delivering a piledriver instead of landing on his ass. Wouldn't twisting during a piledriver injure your opponent MORE?

Not sure if sarcastic, but dude was fun. He had a really good PPV match. I remember Scott praising his work b/c it got the kids in the audience into it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I'm aware of that, but I've always seen it less as he can't take the bumps and more of he WON'T take the bumps. If you CAN'T take the bumps, you probably shouldn't be wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  108. If Dixie were in a bikini during her pep talk, I might go a bit "Pinocchio", IF YA KNOW WHATT I MEAN

    ReplyDelete
  109. I know there was a piledriver in the GAB match, but that one looked fine from my memory. I might need to watch the match again to be sure.

    ReplyDelete
  110. But it all does come back to management. They decide what the talent does, and if said talent can't do it then management has to make the call and pull the plug.

If there's any blame for talent to shoulder it's in all those wrestlers who came into the company just for a paycheck--to play the company's money mark owners for fools. Hogan, Nash, Steiner, Flair, Foley, Angle... the list goes on. Overselling their worth, tarnishing their legacies, deluding the company and its fans into thinking they were just one hot angle away from really taking the fight to WWE. They all deserve some of the blame. But at the end of the day TNA willingly signed the checks, then somehow managed to misuse pretty much all of them.

  111. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 26, 2014 at 10:36 AM

I still want to see a squash match between Lesnar and Ziggler just so we can see Dolph do a 1440 degree sell off a clothesline.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yeah, I think we basically agree that the ownership and overall management is the main reason why the product has been so awful for ten years.

I guess I'd put a little bit of "blame" on the talent roster as well, or at least I'd say that not all of them are necessarily good at this job. And the wrestlers at top are, in my opinion, much more flawed than we've given them credit for.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Ha! You try telling that to Flair...he'd still be wanting to wrestle if he could get clearance.

    ReplyDelete
  122. It's long-term love, but to their credit, WWE can occasionally bust out a storyline or a match that makes you realize, "God damn, I love pro wrestling." I mean, from the night after Elimination Chamber through Mania XXX, that Daniel Bryan storyline was damn-near perfect, and was what wrestling was all about, for me. Yes they make baffling decisions a majority of the time, but when they get something right, or do something unexpected and exciting, it's worth watching, for me. Then again, I don't get AS upset by the dumb decisions as most people on this site tend to. I almost expect disappointment a lot of the time, but I can still get a great deal of enjoyment out of the little things, even when the angles or matches might not be clicking the right way.

    Reading the heated comments below

So, guys, let's not argue about whether TNA is a blight on wrestling or who's to blame for its failures or whether there's a $10 million offer on the table, and let's just all agree that NPP will make fun of is no matter what we say.

That's exactly what it is for a lot of people. Especially if you come in during a great era. Lots of the people here came in during the Hulkamania era. I came in during the attitude era. Once you see something that awesome when you're young, you just keep watching in hopes of it getting that awesome again.

    ReplyDelete
  168. It will make me happy to know something sucked is gone. No I don't watch it, but why would I anyways. If they wanted to keep their jobs they shouldn't have sucked so bad at them. Hooray for TNA dying

  171. And not only that, you're talking a good deal of people who've sucked at their jobs since the WCW days!

Maybe that TV director shouldn't have a job directing TV?
And maybe Ken Anderson should be working construction for a living?

    ReplyDelete
  172. AUSTIN AUSTIN AUSTIN OH HELL YEAH STUNNER STUNNER STUNNER BEER BEER If an entire Raw was Austin coming out and stunning wrestlers at various points in their matches, it would be the best Raw in ages.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Yeah, that'd be true if it were funny, but it's not. It's tired, it's lame, it's a tell-tale sign of someone with little worldview.

    ReplyDelete
  174. i dont get why people troll you just bc of your opinion on TNA. People think its funny at the possibility of people losing their jobs which is pretty shitty. Also some of the people they wish ill on ie the hardys dudleys etc. used to be favorites of theirs once upon a time. I just dont get it TNA sticking around is whats best for the industry, whats wrong with having an alternative to WWE?? I dont consider NXT an alternative in the slightest.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Thanks. I think that's the difference for me. I came in with the attitude era, but I was already in my late teens (like 18 or 19) and while it was great, I was still missing weeks here and there due to school or hanging out or whatever.

But yeah, I can totally understand hoping it gets awesome again. I want it to be awesome, too, but I also don't have the habit of watching it every week when it's not.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I'd guess Austin's "return" would be a short lived thing to promote his new survivor show that he's filming right now.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Grantland is faultless, OKAY?!

    ReplyDelete
  178. She was probably the highlight of that Royal Rumble 2000 bikini contest. She was playing the prude, not wanting to take her robe off, but when she did, yowza!

    ReplyDelete
  179. Neither of them are alternatives.

    ReplyDelete
  180. No dude, it's analogous to an abusive relationship in which we get beaten. Just ask all the people who get that it's just a joke BRO.

    ReplyDelete
  181. PG Austin will not be that great, remember PG Rock was half the character he used to be a couple years ago and the edgiest they let him get was calling Cena a "Kung Pao Bitch" which was uber lame.

    ReplyDelete

    NXT is NOT the alternative.

    ReplyDelete
  184. You stupid monkey!

    ReplyDelete
  185. The Bryan story was amazing. I was watching Raw on Hulu, but I started watching again when Punk quit and the crowd put ALL their faith into Bryan. That Wrestlemania was special and I was marking out with everyone else. I guess after that, I'm just curious why people are getting soooo mad and still watching. It's like...you're not enjoying this, so why are you torturing yourself? I mean, it's one thing to turn it on, know it's going to be meh, shrug your shoulders, and say, "Well, it wasn't our week," but there's a love of the WWE that goes deeper than that. I don't think it's a bad thing, just something I've been curious about.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Really, I'm with you. Yea TNA has its faults but it has been very entertaining (sans wed. show) the past couple months and has been a much needed break from WWE. We are all WWE fans, but having an alternative is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  187. TNA had plenty of chances to be an alternative. Instead, Dixie and Friends decided that being WWE-lite was the way to go. And it has failed.

    ReplyDelete
  188. You'll see Abdullah the Butcher on raw before Davey Richards

    ReplyDelete
  189. Wasn't that pretty much what they said on the PPV last week? "Why pay $54.95 for this show, when you could pay $9.99" is pretty much the same as "$9.99 FUCKER."
