WWF Superstars of Wrestling October 25th, 1986

October 25, 1986

From the Onandoga War Memorial in Syracuse, NY

Your hosts are Brnuo Sammartino, Jesse Ventura, and Vince McMahon

In action tonight are Koko B. Ware, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff and the featured matchup of Tito Santana & Pedro Morales vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff

Moondog Spot vs. Koko B. Ware

Vince is going out of his mind about Frankie. We are shown an insert promo from Butch Reed who tells Koko that either fries birds or plucks them and warns that he will be plucked. Jesse tells us that Koko gave him permission to call him "Buckwheat" when he wrestles. Koko starts the match with a slam and a pair of dropkicks as Spot goes to the corner. Koko fires away as Jesse keeps calling him Buckwheat, which pisses of Vince. Spot takes control after catching Koko with a backbreaker then works a front facelock on the mat. Spot hammers away but misses a fist drop from the middle rope. Koko fights back then catches Spot with a missile dropkick before putting him away with the ghostbuster (2:58).

Thoughts: Koko looked good and was getting over with the crowds at this time. Plus, using a missile dropkick to set up the brainbuster was an awesome combo, especially for 1986. Jesse made all sorts of Buckwheat references on commentary here and you could never get away with that today.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week's focus is on Blackjack Mulligan, who will be returning to the WWF. Well, he has been here just under a different name. We get a clip of Mulligan from his ranch as he calls out Don Muraco, Randy Savage, and King Kong Bundy to come to his ranch for some hard work. Mulligan was very much washed up in 1986 and did not fit into the company but at least this meant the awful Machines gimmick was finished.

Tito Santana & Pedro Morales vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff w/ Slick

Santana interrupts Volkoff's rendition of the Soviet National Anthem with a dropkick as the crowd goes nuts. They clear Sheik & Volkoff from the ring, who regroup with Slick. Back inside, Volkoff accidentally boots Sheik off of the apron as Jesse points out how referee Danny Davis is fair because he did not stop Santana from attacking Volkoff during the National Anthem, prompting an argument with Vince. Tito tags in but Volkoff rakes the eyes then Tito gets double-teamed for a bit. Sheik catches him with a clothesline that gets two. Tito makes the tag as Pedro knocks down the Sheik. He hits a backbreaker but Davis is distracted after Slick jumped up onto the apron until Santana ran in and turned him around. Pedro puts Sheik in a Boston Crab then Santana runs in to stop Volkoff from interfering but Davis orders him to the corner and that allows Volkoff to attack Morales and cover him for the win (3:10). After the match, Tito flips out on Davis then chases him off.

Thoughts: Notable for starting the bad blood between Santana and Davis but other than that, it was dull.

Jesse is with the British Bulldogs and Matilda, calling it the ugliest mascot ever. The WWF really tried to push Matilda at the beginning with all sorts of vignettes featuring heel wrestlers making fun of the dog but. Not much of a segment to be honest and it was under a minute long.

Ken Resnick is with Randy Savage, who will be facing Ricky Steamboat at the November 1st show in the Boston Garden. Savage tells us that he can control the atmosphere and how he is the most talented wrestler ever. Savage was wackier than usual here.

Steve Lombardi & Barry O. vs. The Islanders

Before the match, we get an insert promo from Tama on the beach in Samoa who says that he is ready to get funky. I believe he was the first Samoan in wrestling history to get funky too. Tama works over Barry to start as the crowd approves. Tama uses Snuka's double leapfrog/chop spot then tags Haku, who slams Lombardi on top of his partner. He misses an elbow though and Lombardi tags into the match. Haku catches him with a hip toss then works the arm. Tama tags and they hit Lombardi with a double falling headbutt. Tama and Barry clothesline each other then tag out as Haku beats on Lombardi then takes Barry out with an atomic drop. Haku then hits Lombardi with a front suplex and Tama gets the pin with a splash off of the top rope (3:00)

Thoughts: The fans were really into the Islanders here, especially Tama. Man, Tama had it all then he let himself go and could

Resnick is with the British Bulldogs and asks them about Matilda. This was a bit ridiculous and didn't help matters any that both of these guys were horrible on the mic. Resnick asked Matilda a question at the end, complete with sticking the microphone in her face

Mike Kelly vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts

If Kelly looks familiar it is because he would go on to become Shane Douglas. Jake starts with a slam but Kelly ducks a clothesline and comes back with a crossbody that gets two. Jake gets up and hammers away we get an insert promo from Dick Slater who says that they call snakes "geeks" in the South. Kelly gets a little bit more offense but gets hit with a kneelift. Jake works the leg then puts him away with a DDT (2:27). After the match, Jake goes for his snake but the referee rolls Kelly out of the ring.

Thoughts: Good for a squash match. Jake gave Kelly a bit of offense here too. Jake was really good in the ring at this point as he was in shape and moved fluidly. Jake needs a feud as Steamboat has started to move on to facing Savage at the house shows and I really don't think that Dick Slater is the answer.

Piper's Pit wit guest Mr. Fuji. Piper tells Fuji that he already has his laundry finished as Fuji is holding a clear plastic bag filled with fortune cookies and reads them off as they are all insults aimed at Piper. Fuji then gets pissed when Piper makes fun on him then challenges him to a match next week. They are still playing up Piper's leg injury at this point.

The Rougeau Brothers vs. "Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal & Jimmy Jack Funk

We have the top group of TV jobbers teaming up for this match. Raymond repeatedly slams his opponents then they clear the ring as we get an insert promo from Dino Bravo, who says that as a Canadian, the Rougeau Brothers make him sick. Jacques takes over Funk with a monkey flip then sends him to the floor with a dropkick. Regal tags and traps Jacques in the corner. Funk tags and hits a shoulderbreaker then they both clothesline each other. Jacques sends Funk into the post then tags Raymond and they finish off Funk with the Rougeau bomb.

Thoughts: The Rougeau's continue to impress as the Tag Team Division kept getting stronger.

The Wizard and Sika are on the beach in Samoa. The Wizard screams about Hogan as Sika eats a fish. They were starting building up The Wizard's stable for brief runs against Hogan.

"Leaping" Lanny Poffo vs. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff w/ Bobby Heenan

Once again, Orndorff comes out to Hogan's music. Poffo's pre-match promo was about how Orndorff paled in comparison to Hogan in every single way. Orndorff knocks Poffo over the ropes with an uppercut then goes out and suplexes him on the floor. Orndorff rolls Poffo back into the ring and hits an elbow smash off the top rope then hits the piledriver for the win (1:07).

Thoughts: Orndorff completely dominated Poffo here as he remains the #1 contender to Hogan's title.

Resnick is with the British Bulldogs, who will be facing the Hart Foundation at the Boston Garden. Albano either quit or was fired here then and he was missed on promos as the Bulldogs were horrible on the mic.

Piper is by himself as he cuts a promo on Don Muraco. He calls him an animal but says that he will not be eating him and that he likes to fight too. Piper then tells Muraco that at least he is in the cartoons (Muraco made fun of him for not being as big in real life) and gets residual checks before almost calling him a fat piece of shit.

In action next week will be Randy Savage, Harley Race, Junkyard Dog, and the featured match of Roddy Piper vs. Mr. Fuji.

Final Thoughts: The in ring portion was entertaining enough and the announcement of next's week match will certainly further along Piper's feud. The Bulldogs and the Tag Team Division as a whole received a majority of the focus here. The company was lacking compelling midcard feuds at the time and they were bringing back a lot of veterans who were all washed up (Sika, Mulligan, Graham) and were not focusing on the younger talent.

Comments

  1. I think this was right after Albano retired for a time, so he could work full-time on the Multiple Sclerosis foundation. Or that was the kayfabe explanation, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I think he officially retired on one of these shows and it takes place very shortly

    ReplyDelete
  3. 8 things got posted whilst I was in bed. Politely, I think the schedule needs tweaking still.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have reached out to the writers and am working on it

    ReplyDelete
  5. Y'all doing great work and it's still a rootin-rootin fun place to be!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Was steve regal, the William regal of today?

    ReplyDelete
  7. This was a completely different Regal

    ReplyDelete
  8. Mr. Electricity, or yet another?

    ReplyDelete
  9. From what I saw on NXT, KENTA's grasp of English, while surprisingly GOOD, would leave a lot to be desired on the main roster at this point in time. He would need a mouthpiece like Heyman to really get him over with the general RAW audience, and honestly, as I'm sitting here, it's hard for me to imagine KENTA hanging in a verbal sparring match with uber-douche Cena (who, I'm almost certain of it, would make a "so SOLLY!" joke at KENTA's expense), a guy like Rollins, or even a monosyllabic power guy like Reigns. As much talent as he's got, skills and moveset wise, that language barrier is going to be his achilles' heel.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Most people think Steen is a good promo (contrarians not so much). Hero is regarded as the drizzling shits on the mic.

    ReplyDelete
  11. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 5:40 AM

Let's not think about that part for know, just hope that HHH will have more pull.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Maybe they'll have John Cena put a whoopie cushion under Alex Riley, followed by 40 minutes of replays and over the top laughter from the rest of the hosts.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Bella feud being front and center has made me push away from the table for awhile...it's shit like that which makes me embarrassed to be a wrestling fan. I'll watch whatever is on the Network, but I can't commit to 3 hours of either aimless booking or outright crap every Monday night.

    ReplyDelete
  14. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 5:47 AM

At this point, the show has left me so drained that I really don't care what happens, it was nice that Brock got the title at SS, something I was unsure if they would be able to pull off in the first place. The only fun I'm going to have with all this is seeing everyone's reaction if he does win it back.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That's if they can even remember that they built up Brock strong this year. The memory of the creative team seems to be that of a cat with down's syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Okay, so no one has done it yet? Alright....

    #CENAWINSLOL

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've never understood why people make a big deal about being an "x time champion". Is Mick Foley greater than Bruno Sammartino on account of having more title reigns?

All being an "x time champion" means is that you've lost the title at least x-1 times.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You mean like this?

  19. HE FARTED MAGGLE

    ReplyDelete
  20. Vince let him go in fall 86--but called it a retirement. Sound familiar jim ross?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Vince Jordan must be so sad

    ReplyDelete
  22. He said it with all due respect!I t's in the Geneva Conventions, look it up!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I get the logic of the booking, but does anyone really want to see Cena/Lesnar IV, even in a Cell?

I mean, I would care to see it more than Lesnar/Big Show, but at this point I'm really apathetic toward the product.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm going to start writing BOD slash fic.

"You like my moobs don't you?"groaned Meekin from his computer chair.

"Yep" replied Abeyance, giving Meekin an up-vote.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ... except he had so little of it left prior to WM 30, most people were fully expecting a Taker win. Thus the SHOCK! at Brock ending the Streak.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Right, it's going to be a PG cage match. It's not like I want to see guys bleed buckets of blood anymore, but we've already seen Lesnar PG-destroy Cena at SummerSlam. Putting a cage around that does nothing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Plus, since it's Jericho's last match, the ending is sorta kinda telegraphed from twelve football fields away. Again, lack of suspense KILLS this product. We, as fans, like to be able to suspend our disbelief and get invested in the stories. When endings are telegraphed from a country mile away, that ability vanishes. It's why I, personally, can never get invested in a John Cena match.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wait, what? What I miss?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, for sure. They would "Edge" the FUCK outta Rollins. Give him a six month program with Cena where he LOSES in every way possible, but still keeps the title. Make him way fuckin' worse off for having WON the goddamn belt than he would have been had he never crossed paths with John Cena in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Any of those guys you mentioned have one MAJOR advantage over John Cena: they can LOSE. And not "lose in the sense that I'm gonna get shot after shot until I win it back" but lose the belt and have it STICK. There's a big chance, going in, that if one of those guys you mentioned (Orton, Jericho, Kane, Batista, Show, Henry) goes into a match as champion against one of the younger guys, they're putting him over, not making him tap out to the World's Shittiest Submission Lock.

    ReplyDelete
  31. NO. This is not allowed without Bobby Heenan, Arn Anderson, and/or Tully Blanchard. :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 6:59 AM

It could be trending on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We really need to make it trend.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was wondering if Scott was going to give us a comic book reading update.

I am going to miss Superior Foes of Spider-Man something fierce. Overdrive got over with me big time in his spotlight issue.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey, speaking of that. (I hope you see this in the next few hours.) I have something going up at P2B today and asked Scott if he was cool with me scheduling it since I couldn't figure out how to get ahold of you other than through the comments. Justin from P2B said my piece was going to be posted at 10:00 AM today (I assume Eastern) so I scheduled it for noon today. But reschedule it for whenever would be better if needed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I could watch Lesnar toss Cena around like a rag doll 12 more times and it would be way better than any Cena/Orton or Lesnar/Show repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  37. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:02 AM

I'll be on here for the show so count me out on that part.
Good luck to whoever can make that trend.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Me either. It just makes it harder for the audience to see that it's the exact same match. Sorry for the pessimism, but dammit all....they should just RETIRE the Cell. It was a product of a different era, and like yourself, while I have no real intrinsic desire to see guys bleed damn near to death in front of me, THAT is what the purpose of the Cell was. And if you're not going to use it for that, and you don't have a crazy bastard like Foley willing to dive off of it, or go through the mesh or something special that you can't do with a regular match....

    It's POINTLESS.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:03 AM

Isn't that CFC guy putting up comic updates?

    ReplyDelete
  40. They rarely ever use the cage as a weapon. You don't have to bleed, but at least use the gimmick. Really, what's the point?

    ReplyDelete
  41. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:05 AM

It looks like a cool visual. That's all you need to be invested in a cage match now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That seems fine

    ReplyDelete
  43. Agreed. Might as well be a regular match, with no-DQ or no countout or something. And even THOSE are beyond stale anymore, since the unpredictability and craziness has been toned way, way down.

Two things that don't really work well as PG-versions of themselves: Lesbian angles, and extremely violent gimmick matches. But yet, WWE seems intent on pushing them on us, and having the temerity to wonder WHY fans are tuning out.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure but every once in a while Scott will drop in and let us know what comics he's reading. Superior Foes is my favorite book so I was curious to know what he thought about especially considering it's impending demise.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yep, this blood lust on here kind of creeps me out. I just don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:08 AM

Hardcore matches don't feel the same without barbed wire.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I honestly don't care about blood. But use the actual cage for something, otherwise it's just a regular match with mesh in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  48. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:10 AM

The new cage does look like mesh now, and it looks trimmed down as well.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Austin also moved the ratings; Cena only moves kids merchandise and some PPV buys if matched with the right person
Austin was only on top for a few years and changed (rightly or wrongly) from face to heel) after only a few years; Cena never has changed anything in 10 years except the color of his shirt

I saw Austin once live on a ppv (KOTR 1999); that pop was huge. The person I went with never been to a wrestling event live before and it literally scared her how big it was.
I was at summerslam 2013 and first time seeing Cena and the crowd felt meh about seeing him.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Yep Mode" ABeyAnce1©September 17, 2014 at 7:12 AM

Now in CZW's case, it's weapons for the sake of it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. HHH in the 3 stages of hell match is seriously the only one I can think of. Well except his retirement match against the Rock, but I don't really count that one, as his career was over.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wouldn't even go that far, but you can't really half-ass the ridiculously violent gimmick matches, and expect them to have the same visual impact as the (relatively) gory matches of the Attitude Era or even the 2000's "hardcore" matches. It just comes across as...I don't know...sorta weak. And again, I say this as a person who DOESN'T want guys killing themselves for his entertainment. I don't want that at ALL...but at the same time, I don't want to see Stephenie Meyer trying to remake "Reservoir Dogs" minus the "offensive violence, swearing, and gunplay". Just don't do it. That's all.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "Or that was the kayfabe explanation, at least." Not really sure what your beef is here. Maybe you didn't read far enough to get to the qualifier?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would cheer for a hardcore match where they used walkie-talkies as a weapon.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think firing Stephanie would almost instantly fix the product. Nepotism is killing WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This show really is a throwback to the In Your House days.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Foley mentions in Have A Nice DAY that he wanted to make the match a psychological battle, as he was obviously never going to properly keep up with HBK, and he wanted to create a new dynamic - a type of opponent Shawn had never fought before, and a match where his slender frame and acrobatics wouldn't help him outmanoeuvre a bigger antagonist. Never heard the 'it was a spin on the match with Vader' thing before - and I don't believe it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Agreed. I don't want to see guys bleed anymore because that era is over. But because the bloodbath matches were so striking, they set the bar for violence really high. Hell in a Cell was a match that was meant to be brutal to blow off huge feuds, not a yearly event in October.

Having a Hell in a Cell match in which nobody bleeds and nobody does Foley-ish bumps means they're clinging to a gimmick that really belongs to another era. It would be like doing DQ and countout losses and time-limit draws on a regular basis like wrestling used to do in the 70s and 80s.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would pretty much be happier with any of those guys (maybe not Show). Because at least I'd believe they might put a guy like Rollins over without constantly stressing how okay, he technically won the match but really he's a big piece of garbage that is light years away from being on Cena's level , who could easily have beaten him with one hand tied behind his back if not for the whole Authority running it at once and beating up Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Exactly. Congratulations, you're the biggest loser champion of all-time!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Best example of that was around 2002-2003, when Booker T was bragging about his "5 time, 5 time, 5 time" thing to RVD.

RVD: Wow that's incredible man, you mean you lost the WCW title 5 times??"

Booker: "... You didn't say that.... TELL ME YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT!!"

    ReplyDelete
  62. The heels weren't always chickenshits who couldn't possibly beat anyone, and don't put words in my mouth about hating anything, which I didn't say. I said I prefer dominant heel champions. And no, I wasn't a big Hogan as dominant face champ. Nobody other than Hogan and Cena dominated the era to their extent so those are the only two I really had a problem with. Austin was dominant but really didn't have extended runs with the belt. Ditto Rock.

Although I don't know why I'm even responding, you take anything other than praise for the greatness of Cena as a personal insult , you'd think you were his father.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:43 AM

Hmmmmmmmm. Orton getting destroyed by Lesnar?
I think I could live with that.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Just because Austin and Rock got "russofied" title losses due to crooked heel refs or infinite run ins doesn't make them any less dominant than Cena. Hell, Cena has done more clean jobs as a face in the past 14 months than Rock and Austin combined during most of the attitude Era. You just have a "rose colored glasses" memory, Austin and Rock were as invincible as they came, when they were top faces.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:44 AM

Ziggler selling for Brock would be on HBK/Hogan levels.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:45 AM

I miss the "cheese grater" spot.

    ReplyDelete
  67. When a pothead gets it, your audience has to be thinking the same thing. Stop advertising how often you've lost, idiots!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:49 AM

After growing up watching cage matches in JCP I just expected it for awhile. Now when I see a WWE match I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Exactly. You don't have to "Dusty" up your forehead, but at least use the spot!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:52 AM

    ...AWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonSeptember 17, 2014 at 7:53 AM

That's not what Art Donovan thinks.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Excuse me, Vince. Please stop trying to inform me about what my opinion is supposed to be. I have, at no point, said I had a problem with a dominant face for a short period of time having the title. That's fine. In addition, both Austin and Rock had multiple opponents that were treated as on their level (each other, Undertaker, HHH from late 99 on, for example). Plus, their Eras as dominant faces with the titles lasted for about 2 years each (Austin: 1998 through mid 1999, after that his next title run was as a heel...and for the record couldn't stand late 2000 Austin before he turned; Rock: 1999 through 2002 with time off at various points), and neither held the title for a lot of it. For short periods like that, it's not my preferred way of handling the title but I can live with it. Cena is coming on 10 years in a few months. I lived with it for awhile...now I'm sick to death of it. And that's not even taking into account that I like Rock and Austin better than Cena anyway, even if I didn't particularly want them as dominant champs at the top.

    ReplyDelete
  74. if cena wins # 16 to tie flair and than theyhave rollins who just lost to reigns cash in than throw the title in the trash...

    ReplyDelete
  75. the only 2 who have enough pull to gig themselves and not care about backstage consequences would be cena and brock. with that said i too hate pg cage matches.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm still hanging on, strangely enough. The network has given me a lot of material to work with, and the PPVs (shows I haven't purchased since 2007) have at least provided me with some quality matches. I can't *not* follow the biz to some degree because I have The Sickness, but its shit times like this that make it very difficult to really enjoy myself.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm betting the cell match will be Ambrose v Rollins. It should be anyway - it seems like that's what the feud has been building to.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Understated problem with the product. Gimmick PPVs / "Specials". Because you now HAVE to book a Hell in a Cell match in October, you have to use ham-fisted (shitty) booking to either justify Cena/Lesnar IV, or promote a new top program that doesn't have the heat to warrant a HITC blowoff.

Theoretically Ambrose could face Rollins, but unless you run that as your main you're left with the same problem. This whole "book the feud around the match" logic is ass-backwards. (I'm also not convinced Ambrose won't go "heel" on Reigns somehow at NOC)

    ReplyDelete
  79. I've refused to watch any of the Bellas segments since the beginning of the whole deal, mainly to maintain my sanity. I knew what I would be getting so I avoided the massive upcoming pothole before it even became a problem for me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. And it could be a while before any of that happens. Get comfy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. At least then they were courteous enough to give away a house.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well, at around 2 or 3 reigns, sure.

winning the title sixteen times means you've won it more then most champs have defended it, potentially across multiple reigns.

    That's worth something,

    ReplyDelete
  83. Looks like Brad tinkered with the schedule a little... yours will run at noon at PTBN, so still works perfect with the post here.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The istique was gone by WM 30

He was a loser to get jobbed to Taker. Clearly they fixed that, but losing to Cena on sunday is the difference between his god like standing and just being a top guy

    ReplyDelete
  85. Not if most of your reigns are known to be one or two months long. That just means you've defended the title maybe one, two or possibly three times and can't hold onto the damn thing.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Again. Even if he had zero successful defenses, he won 16 title matches.

How many title matches did all the one time champions win? Excluding the 70's guys when reigns lasted years.

Then we know at least a few oof Flair's reigns WERE pretty long.

    It sounds impressive to me.

The opposite is a guy like Edge, where ten titles was impressive because he was a loser not good enough to hold the belt, but kept winning it back through his gimmick's chicken-shittery

Either way a good stat, when provided context.

    ReplyDelete
  87. You could, but what would the point be? You wouldn't enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  88. None taken! In fact, your description of me is startlingly accurate!

    ReplyDelete
  89. To me, "Former World Champion" holds as much weight as "Former 10-time World Champion" because as soon as I hear that, I think chances are he went back and forth with a few guys over the course of a short time span. For instance, John Cena is 15-time world champion, and has been wrestling for 11 years. If they simply called Cena a "former champion" it would mean the exact same thing.

  90. Summerslam 1999, put over Mankind clean as a sheet. Although I know Mick and Austin were good friends and traveling buddies back to their WCW days.

  91. I don't think Cena's winning the title, but we're pretty much assured of a gimmicky ending that leads to "HiaC".

I also have no doubt that both marches will be great, but that Brock (or the company) needs is the usual poor, 50/50 booking.

  92. Right, just that Cena happens to be extremely dull and "paint by the numbers". Very few critics think he's not a great performer or anything, it's just that his character is so boring at this point and he never tries anything new. They guy can go in the ring and generally produces good to great matches, but getting invested in him as a character is a total chore. Austin was different and was only really on top for maybe 4 years. Plus it was new and different. It's now 16 years later and they're STILL clinging to the "evil authority figure that is a dick for no reason" formula.

  93. Sure, they could be fine, but orton/Jericho in 2014? Wake me up in 2006 maybe. Then again, I just happen to find orton boring as hell and even when he's booked correctly, I can't find the guy interesting at all. But to each their own and all.

  94. The only thing I dislike about this match is the ending, with Vader obviously being a few seconds too late.

But whatever. Awesome match, shite show.

  95. Anybody remember when Shasta Whatley joined the WWF as a jobber in 1990? Sadly, he could have made millions if he had been around when Papa Shango was.

  96. That other Regal was American and had long, curly red hair.

  97. What about Blasé? Was he "let go" too, or did he actually choose to retire due to health. Blasé did live until 2003 though, so maybe he just retired.

  98. Maybe it's grasping at straws, but I find it hard to believe they wouldn't hype up "Cena could tie Ric Flair" if he was actually going to tie Ric Flair. That's a record most wrestling fans know and are aware of, and when it happens it actually should be something that's celebrated.

Watching how the lines move on Lesnar-Cena will be something to look out for. If it starts to narrow heading into Sunday, or if Cena ends up as the favorite when the show starts, then Cena will win. If it stays the same the title is likely staying with Lesnar.

  99. I like him better than those mentioned. I judge by character, mic skills aa well. And he trumps everyone you mentioned

  101. Didn't know there was a Writer's Purge...glad we both survived as well... :)

  102. This is like the 80th time I've heard about a "purge"...I must be oblivious...what happened? :-/

    (And thanks for the props.)

  103. I met the Bellas at the fan convention before wrestlemania 26 in Phoenix. Still pissed that they wouldn't sit on my lap for pictures. Brie said "great idea but then I'd be sitting on laps rest of day." Nikki was funnier and let me pat her butt after picture.

  104. Scott streamlined the number of contributors over the weekend.

  105. Ah...had no idea. Glad we made the cut.

  106. Which would make the story even better.

If Heel!Cena is just Cena with an attitude and a black hat, we're in the same boat, to make him a great heel, he needs to be hated by the kids and the adults, and the best way to make somebody unpopular with adults is to make them a loser.
