Yearly Review: WWF May 1990

The mighty Earthquake makes a big statement as he looks to become a dominate force in the WWF. What does he do? Find out!

WWF World Championship Scene: (currently held by: The Ultimate Warrior)
There wasn’t much of anything new going on throughout the month for the new champ. Warrior competed against Mr. Perfect on the house show market and would win each match. His feud with Rick Rude continued as well. Rude revealed during the May 15th taping of Superstars that he would no longer kiss a random female fan from the crowd until he wins the WWF World Championship. Aside from that, Warrior had an easy month as the champion.

WWF Intercontinental Championship Scene: (currently held by: Mr. Perfect)
Aside from losing to Warrior on the house show market, Perfect didn’t really compete in any other notable matches. Mr. Perfect did get a rare win for the month when he was able to pin Hercules at a house show in Toronto, Ontario.

WWF World Tag Team Championship Scene: (currently held by: Demolition)
Yet again, there weren’t any new developments in the title scene. Demolition worked the house show market against the Hart Foundation. They would trade disqualification victories throughout the month, but nothing new happened between these two teams.

 Other Happenings:
- Earthquake became the host hated man in the WWF when during the May 15th taping of Superstars, he viciously attacked everyone’s hero, Hulk Hogan on the Brother Love show. Earthquake splashed Hogan several times after laying him out with a steel chair shot to the back as Hogan was distracted by Jimmy Hart. Hogan would do a stretcher job and leave fans worried about his future.

- During the same taping, Bad News Brown tried to seemingly murder Jake Roberts snake. Brown attacked Roberts after a match and tried to smash the snake with a steel chair. Luckily, Roberts was able to prevent that from happening.

- Boris Zhukov and Nikolai Volkoff officially broke up and began to have matches against each other. Volkoff was the babyface while Zhukov remanined true to Russia and his heel persona.

- Brother Love joined the team of Randy Savage, and Sensational Sherri in a feud with Dusty Rhodes, Sapphire and Miss Elizabeth. Love proclaimed that he would have Elizabeth kiss his feet.

  1. IC champ doing jobs to the world champ.

    Some things never change.

  2. I think posts like this further prove the need for quality control.

  3. Quality is FINE around here. Haven't you heard about the new forum? Would you like to be a mod?

  4. I bet Bob isn't even signed up for the forums.

  5. Don't hassle me, I'm local.

  6. I can't believe there are so many people monitoring Dave Coulier's wikipedia page... but I'll have you know, Bayless, that Garea's Legacy lives on.

I think these are good, just wish he'd get to a point in WWF history I care about. But I do think it's funny that there's now 3 posts above the "Forum is Live!" (for about 2 weeks) that will get about 60 comments combined.

I think a better idea would be a site overhaul. Maybe have tabs at the top with one group for Scott's posts, one for updates/daily threads, one for recaps of Raw/SD/Impact or whatever (in other words, the Bayless/Hall section with PG's Raw recap), and one for everything else. Probably not possible with Blogger, and I'm sure Scott has neither the time, energy, or money to go full independent.

The days when you could fill an entire WWF show with tag team matches...

  9. The problem is they are published so infrequently that just randomly this guy will show back up again. I forgot he was even writing for the site. This reviews also don't seem to get much play.

  10. This will be cool, the forum can be a place where everyone goes to make fun of the people in that same day's comments section.

This is not exactly like NPP at all.

That's fucked up, I just figured this was of the usual manner of comments we have here (like me and my ex, we either argue or fuck), my best advice would be to try to negotiate or find a good lawyer.

  12. I'm not going the lawyer route. Just wish we could find some common ground. They'll be 18 soon enough so I might just ride it out. Thanks though

  13. Backlund or Bill Murray??

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, but since Warrior was the undefeated IC Champion - it almost made sense.

  15. I remember hating the WWF with no Hogan.

  16. What a weird show...seemed like every match had an established mid-carder teaming with a full-on jobber. It's like they were trying to punish a bunch of guys all at once.

On a side note, I wonder if Vince was smart enough to have a long-term plan for Andre when they ran the Machines angle, or if the feud with Hogan was the alternative after the Machines didn't get over. If the suspension angle was always supposed to lead to the reinstatement and subsequent heel turn, that's a pretty brilliant piece of booking.

  17. Too many boards. Consolidate that shit.

  18. I only post 100% fact

  19. Yep, Davey wasn't great on the mic, but he was at least coherent and we could understand him. So when he was carried, he was fine. (Cornette or Owen with a long promo, then "RIGHT DAVEY??" ). Dynamite however? Ouch.

  20. "People jerking themselves off" became the most overused cliche on this blog in just a few hours.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, I think the long-term plan for Andre goes all the way back to him pouring milk over Hogan's head after Hulk won the title. Not that Vince was thinking, "I'll push this friendship for 3 years and then run a big show in the Silverdome" at that very time, but I have no doubt in my mind that that backstage segment was done for the express purpose of setting up a Hulk vs. Andre match, when the time was right.

  22. I don't understand the need for fewer posts- have people lost the ability to just scroll down?

    ReplyDelete
  23. It clogs up the main page and possibly pushes posts people want to read to page two.

Oh please God no, say it ain't so.

  25. I think you mean "dominant", not dominate. Whatever that is.

  26. Milk? C'mon my man...he's pouring champagne on Hulk's head like a baller!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was 5 and vividly remember the earthquake segment. in fact i was one of the youngsters that wrote a get well hulk card much to scott's chagrin back than. (Scott has a story that he tells a lot that his old man got a get well hulk poster and hung it in his room?? correct me if im wrong).

  28. would you be in agreement with me that billy jack hayne's best match was at wm3 vs Herc?? Its one of those matches that I loved when I first saw it as a kid (not live as i was 2). Still holds some water for me today as well.

  29. barry o eats pins like none other. its like kane today in a main event tag match, theres no doubt whose taken the pin.

  30. Are you fucking kidding me dude? Talking about trolls. What a piece of shit. Going by the BEST comment in this thread, at least four people bothered enough to read this and think of it enough to comment on it. Because you didn't enjoy it? (Let alone be a douche and click, presumably not read and just troll comment to be a cunt again) we should be subject to what you find enjoyable? Entitled douche.

  31. He would never protect himself. Stupid but looked incredible. The only surprise of Kid's paralysis is that it happened because of something so innocuous.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In his book, Foley said that Dynamite was 230lbs packed onto a frame that probably should've held 175lbs tops.

  33. Both of them were skinny little punks in Stampede.

  34. In defense of today, there were a fair bit of "throwaway" tag teams on this show:

Afi and Haynes, Slater and Hunter, Hercules and O, the odd guys in the six-man (Morales and Glover), and Regal and Gibbs.

WWE can easily do the same today, with a little help from NXT.

  35. More like 4/10 !

    ReplyDelete
  36. You get a very worked up over this.

This is part of the problem people were talking about in the quality control thread. There's no set schedule for when Mr. Bob decides to post his monthly reviews. I had forgotten he wrote for the site!

But I look forward to you flying off the handle again. This is fun.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm sure it looked amazing, but it's pretty much the dumbest thing I can imagine.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm a busy guy, and I try to get these posted on here in a timely fashion, which hasn't been the case, as of late. However, I've never understood the point of jabs and whatnot. For not liking a post, there has been quite a bit of time spent on commenting on it. For those who have posted on this keeping it to the topic on hand, I appreciate it. I'll keep these posts on my own blog moving forward.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wonder how come you cannot see it right under your eyes... Shouldn't Hart and Kid have been paired together ? And formed the best tag team of all times ?

    ReplyDelete
  40. We just had a whole thing about quality control and having a set schedule blah blah and out of nowhere....here comes Bob!

    I'd be remiss if I didn't make a comment
