Birthday Plug?

Hey Scott,

Talbot from the blog here, wondering if you'd give this podcast a plug? It's called Aliens Under the Vatican and I've been appearing on it semi-regularly as kind of a "technically not a cast member but there all the time/Steve Martin on SNL in the 70s" kinda capacity for a while now, but I didn't previously ask for a plug because it's not usually about wrestling…. but this week I figured I'd ask for two reasons:

1) It's the host's birthday, and I'm too cheap to get him a real gift.

2) The first twenty minutes or so of the episode are almost entirely about Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and the host's very good Jesse impression reappears throughout the rest of the episode.

Other topics include dinosaurs, Bill & Ted, whether or not Harley Quinn is a juggalo, and one of the hosts doing everything he can to keep me from getting through a "Gotham" review.

Thanks in advance! Hopefully you and/or the BoD can dig on our particular brand of nerdy anarchy.

The Flash is still killing it for me as far as superhero shows go.  I didn't even realize who Kaitlyn Snow was until I looked her up on Wikipedia and realized where it's going.  Stupid New 52 revamps.

Wait, we need a reason to want to punch Vince Russo in the face?

  3. I hate how high the referees are mic'd now and how they have them deliver lines worthy of that South Park where Vince McMahon watches the kids wrestle with opera glasses.

  4. What about C4 death matches?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Once in a blue moon. I still think if they slapped the C4 Death Match gimmick on the Rosie/Trump match from RAW that it would have been MOTY.

  6. What was the last big "ref bump" finish?

I've got a crappy memory for this sort of thing. Was there not one quite recently? I'm sure I remember HHH pulling a ref out of the ring?

  7. Thing about the distraction roll-up that gets me is that it STILL has to be effective for three seconds.

If a pin was via a 1-count, then a distraction roll-up might be a thing, but for a 3-count? No matter how distracted, if you're not completely gonzo'd, you would be able to recover and kick out within that time, surely? You're not in the pinning predicament and still thinking "But why are they playing Orton's music?"

  8. I would have thought "Dean Ambrose" was only 3 syllables - "Dean Am-Brose"?

    But I get your point.

  10. On Smackdown there was a hilariously over long ref bump in a Daniel Bryan match were HHH pulled a ref out if the ring and he was dead for like 10 minutes. Botchamania sped it up and set it to music and it was the funniest shit ever

  11. Still better than Steinbrenner

  12. they didn't mention that he is trying to "bodyslam" brain injuries

  13. #5 drives me insane. Even an announcement of "no contest" would be fine. Instead, it's just the referee going "OK, we're done with the wrestling. No more wrestling for right now."

    ReplyDelete
  14. You don't think he's really started getting senile already?

Honestly, if he ever went that far around the bend, they'd remove him from his position. If the family didn't/wouldn't, the actual board of directors would.

  15. I loved when Ambrose saw Rollins and Kane coming down the ramp a few weeks ago and still went for (and got) the pinfall in his match. That's how actual humans would do it.

  16. By the way, the new BM intro is pretty damn good. Not great, but good.

  17. The Dusty is solid gold when done correctly. Unfortunately it fell into the hands of Dusty. Poor Stanley Blackburn should have his rightful place in the history books.

  18. Um, the edict said they all had to be 4-5, so a guy with 3 would suddenly have another one inserted and....ah nevermind.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Smackdown one? I dig the RAW intro the best

  20. Im fine with it as well, but it was so damn over done in NWA in the 80's

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ah, I get it. Sorry. I'm half asleep here. My bad.

  22. How hard is it to just have Dusty, Magnum etc just win the damn match and have Flair win via shenanigans a few months later?

  23. Mike Choida was a BOSS at taking huge bumps.

    B) would be an hilarious visual, though.

  25. Over-long? That referee was lucky to be alive after the King of Kings pulled him out of the ring!

  26. I feel like there was a ref bump in the Triple Threat at 'Mania.

  27. I just watched the WM Rewind for WM 15 and there were 3 different ref's bumped until the payoff with Mick hobbling to the ring. Thanks Vinnie Ru.

  28. Professional wrestling is not supposed to be realistic."Realism" is killing pro wrestling. In many ways the distraction finish is more unrealistic than ref bumps, as many have already pointed out. If anyone in a real sport distracted an opponent they would be punished for that severely. Plus, why is someone's music always playing when there is a run-in? That never made any sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. that would seem like the first good thing for the fans ever coming from the WWE going public.

    ReplyDelete
  30. also most recipients of that kind of distraction have also distracted someone else the same way in the past - so they should be aware of what the guy appearing at ringside is trying to do.

    ReplyDelete
  31. as great as Austins run-ins with the shattering glass were, I think he is to blame for this as well.

  32. Payback for Shane: http://youtu.be/RBsRjLpZLAs

  33. I could buy it being a distraction if it was completely out-of-place music. Like, if Ambrose is wrestling a match and suddenly Honky Tonk Man's old theme started up, I could see him being confused. If it's Orton's theme, naturally Dean would've been expecting or even counting on some Authority interference.
