BoD Friday Night Thread

Tonight is the Smackdown 15th Anniversary Show starting at 8pm on Syfy

Also, Game 1 of the ALCS begins at 8:07 on TBS between the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles. There is rain scheduled in the forecast and if it does get cancelled, Game 1 will take place Sunday afternoon.

The New York Islanders vs. Carolina Hurricanes is the only game on the NHL schedule tonight.

And for NBA fans there are several preseason games underway.

Comments

  1. My whole thing with "giving others the same schedule", is not everyone is equal. If, say, Dean Ambrose, somehow becomes a huge mainstream star, and tells Vince he wants to work X amount of days per year, etc, then Vince is probably going to listen. If Ambrose tells him tomorrow he's only going to work a certain amount of days? Yeah, right.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Oh Cult, now you're attempting to make personal attacks? That's so edgy!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Didn't Savage get the jobber intro for this match (already in the ring, no music) while Koko got his full-blown entrance? That always struck me as very weird for a time when the WWF did almost nothing by accident.

Kurt Koffman may be remembered for getting some face time in Mick Foley's first book (he was Mick's first official opponent).

    ReplyDelete
  4. exactly. Once a guy reaches a status then negotiate for what you can get. I don't see the point in getting mad at Brock, Punk, Rock or anyone else. They are in the situation they are in b/c they negotiated for it.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I was thinking the same thing. Isnt this kind of what people wanted in 2012?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Kind of makes the whole "Daniel Bryan is injured and can't defend the title, so he has to surrender the belt" seem like a bigger deal in hindsight when Lesnar just up and disappears from late September to January.

Which means they won't play that up at all because all hail Roman Reigns, Dothraki Horse Lord Who Mounts the World.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Same deal with guys like Hogan. Sure, his creative control in WCW was a killer in a lot of ways, but what was Hulk supposed to do, not ask for it?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I personally rank them as follows:

    1. WrestleMania 25
    2. Hell in a Cell
    3. WrestleMania 26
    4. Ground Zero
    5. Royal Rumble '98

    ReplyDelete
  9. Who will be his Khaleesi though?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Same with Hall and Nash and their salary kicker. Who turns down free money?

    ReplyDelete
  11. How long until AJ crashes the set and roughs up one some of those tattoo artists?

    ReplyDelete
  12. He also dissed ROH, after the way they treated Colt Cabana.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wonder what the cost of a Brock PPV defense would be vs the cost of Rock's appearance on Monday. Which brings more value to the company?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Remember watching this live and the shot from below, when Shawn was on top of the cell, dripping blood down to the camera angle absolutely suckered me in... and that blade job is a work of art, even in slow motion when you know what you're looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Both? Their rematch at IYH 14 is nothing to sneeze at, either.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good point. Okay. So this just reinforces that basically anyone looking to contact him would be wasting their time.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Savage was already in the ring, you are correct.

Koko's entrance was more elaborate and got the crowd going.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What about the 30-day rule??

    ReplyDelete
  19. nice Clerks cartoon ref.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Only need 14 hours, no one cares about Smackd.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Could actually be a big deal if they made that opponent Daniel Bryan. Give us a few months of video packages (Bryan rehabbing, Brock being a physical specimen) and bam, huge main event.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Apples and Oranges because Brock could defend the title if called upon. A guy who's injured is out indefinitely.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I sorta get the complaint, but at the end of the day, wrestling is a work. A guy could "defend" the title 10 times a day and not lose if the company doesn't want him to. So who cares if the belt isn't "defended" frequently. I think it brings more prestige when we're not seeing the same recycled title matches for 3-4 PPV's in a row.

Without the World Champ on the Survivor Series PPV, they may actually... gasp..... put some effort into the elimination matches.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know you asked facetiously, but it stands to reason that corrupt authority figure HHH would enforce that rule on one champion and not another.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The win in this pissing contest goes to the guy who didn't use the word "fag" as an insult in 2014, you piece of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "and that's just shitty writing." should be written in big, red marker on every page of every script for every show that the WWE is putting out right now by someone (ANYONE) in that company that actually gives a damn.

(With the possible exception of NXT...HOWYADOIN')

  27. Kaiju Big Battel is performance art.

  28. Notice how John Cena is on RAW every week--in multiple segments even--yet the ratings continue to dip? In sure in Titan Tower there are those who argue Daniel Bryan, Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose haven't been ready for their pushes and are to blame for sagging ratings, but the reality is John Cena has been all over TV and the PPVs all year and WWE fans continue to slowly evaporate away.

Bray Wyatt could be the top heel on weekly WWE right now had they put him over Cena 2-to-1 in their program (including giving him the win at WrestleMania). Brock Lesnar would have a greater aura in invincibility had he not had to give Cena somuch offense in the NoC rematch. Dean Ambrose is, ironically, getting more over by fighting with Cena than Seth Rollins and I honestly believe WWE doesn't entirely realize that.

WWE had a chance at a fresh beginning with the Lesnar win at SummerSlam, but they screwed it up almost immediately. They should never have booked the NoC rematch, and instead done an angle where Lesnar & Heyman dared the Authority to strip him of the championship. HHH & Steph would back down, and for the rest of the year the entire WWE roster would be jockeying to be the one to take on Lesnar. Simple as pie, and no one would be complaining about Lesnar not being on TV or defending the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This match NEVER gets old. And they managed to top it decades later.

TJ: I bought the Brothers of Destruction DVD on a whim. No match list inside. I'm almost afraid to look it up online. Did I waste $10?

  30. Dude, wrestling is not a work. It is an art form. And should be taken very, very seriously. Who the hell do you think you are to just have fun with the product? And why would you remind people that wrestling is just a carny con job designed to make money off of people willing to pay up? You're just diluting the ART FORM.

As an aside, someone told me today that juggling is an art form too. So, you know...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah pretty gay. Not as gay as fantasy booking but still.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wyatt was supposed to lose the feud to Cena. He's the bad guy. Cena is the good guy. The tried-and-true narrative is that the good guy wins in the end. Wyatt benefitted from the feud more than people want to admit. He was essentially a rookie who not only got to work the biggest show of the year with the biggest star in the company, he worked a three-month program with him. That's how it was for Cena when he was a rookie, and he lost feuds to guys like Kurt Angle, Undertaker, etc. And you know what? Cena turned out OK. I just don't buy this idea that the Cena feud killed Wyatt's momentum. If Wyatt is suffering as a character, that's because WWE didn't make all the right moves with him after the Cena feud.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah man. Because edgy is clearly more porting than expressing oneself the way they like.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think I love you man. I haven't laughed like this since yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah! You said a bad word. You are totally a piece of shit. Or something. I'm getting confused. Someone needs to put out a list of words we are not allowed to say anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think AMC would pick that up. They just cancelled the Billy Corgan wrestling project before it even aired due to "budget cutbacks at the station" which makes no sense considering AMC's currently raking in more money and getting higher ratings than ever so why would they need to cut back?

    ReplyDelete
  37. And that someone needs to realize that it's 2014 and censorship should have been banned by now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Watching it back all these years later, the only thing that does grate rather is the clunky way the spot with Michaels beating up the TV cameraman was contrived and telegraphed. For the first time ever you have the camera guys parading around with WWF TV t-shirts and our attention is called to them far more often than usual, as they get in the faces of the performers, get in the way of high spots, have their "feed" cut off mid-shot and are generally a world away from the slickness the television production was even at that time.

Of course there was a reason for this. We have to be aware of the cameramen so that Shawn's patience eventually snaps with them and he gives one of them a kicking and thus provides a storyline reason for the door of the cage to be opened, but watching it back and knowing that spot is coming, the sledgehammer of plot moments are there for all to see.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm sorry, but if you can judge someone as a piece of shit because they said ONE WORD that you don't like, you might want to reconsider who the piece of shit really is.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey maybe its the moron who takes the word fag as an insult in 2014.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The only elevation Wyatt received was early in the feud, simply for the fact that he was opposing John Cena. People cheered him for that. But yes, Wyatt was the heel, and the heel is supposed to lose... at the END of the feud. WWE botched the execution by having Cena win the first encounter at WrestleMania. Wyatt won match 2, with the help of Rowan & Harper (and interference from a singing child), in a cage match (which is supposed to prevent outside interference), and won not by pinfall but by exiting the cage first. Their 3rd PPV encounter featured copious interference by Rowan, Harper and the Usos, and instead of Cena battling back from insurmountable odds to save his soul from Wyatt's darkness, Cena decisively beat Bray by outsmarting him in a Last Man Standing match. Wyatt was never pushed as superior or even equal to John Cena. In the end he was just a heel that talked crazy and cheated to win. Smart fans were once again disappointed that someone they liked wasn't elevated, while mark fans were never given a reason to believe Cena couldn't beat Wyatt every time in a fair fight. The follow-up feud with Chris Jericho was even worse, and its hard to even judge how over Wyatt still is because they aren't even using him on TV at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's a lot to ask of the No. 1 guy in the company to job to (basically) a rookie at WrestleMania, especially at a WrestleMania where the Undertaker is going to lose and the company is putting their main-event eggs in the unproven basket that is Daniel Bryan. And I'm sure if it had been Bryan or CM Punk facing Wyatt at WM, a lot of the same fans who are upset about Cena winning would be all about the babyface winning. So I get why Cena beat Wyatt at WM.
Now, I do agree that Wyatt should've had a more decisive win over Cena in the cage match, but at the same time, he won in the way that heels have been winning for years. Heel Ric Flair cheated and got help from the Horsemen; heel HHH cheated and got help from Evolution and D-X. The only heels who don't always cheat and get help are monster heels, and Bray is somewhere between a monster heel and a slimy chickens*** heel.

  43. 24 hours is a long time!

    ReplyDelete
  44. They should make a story about this situation. Why not strip the title from Lesnar and make a tournament and then Lesnar comes back claiming that he is still the champion and then they make a Champion vs Champion match at the Rumble... sounds familiar... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's the guy who uses homophobic slurs. That's an easy one.

  46. Wyatt has been colder than ever since losing his feud to Cena

    ReplyDelete
  47. And had an awesome mini-match at the Royal Rumble 2007.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Harley Race just seems so out of place in the mid 80's WWF. As a kid had no idea who he was and found him boring. I like watching his matches from this time period now but he just doesn't quite fit.

Then again, I think mid 80's WWF had more wrestler diversity than late 80's WWF so maybe he did fit.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That's exactly how I'd rank them as well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Clearly. You don't imagine that people might be more complex than a single word, do you? That might betray your brown complexity.

    ReplyDelete
  51. To laugh? Hell yeah it is.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It probably shouldn't, but it still winds me up how many people bitch and whine about this kind of stuff without ever stopping to look at the bigger picture. Like seriously, does it really make any difference if WWE don't put their title on TV during what is traditionally a lame duck, dead zone season anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Survivor Series '96 and WrestleMania 13.

  56. "No, fag means cigarette..."

    "YOU'RE a cigarette!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. If the point was to elevate or give Wyatt "the rub" simply by working with Cena it failed. I've heard the argument that Cena had to win at WrestleMania because of Undertaker losing, Bryan winning might not overcome that and a Cena loss as well, etc. What that ignores is the reality that Wyatt, had he pinned Cena at WrestleMania (likely with help from Rowan & Harper), would have gotten a sizable babyface reaction. That's how you make a star. Cena's been on top long enough that the loss won't hurt him (which is why it was also ridiculous to give him a win back so quickly against Brock Lesnar).

They had all the elements in place to tell the story they wanted, they just did them in a jumbled up way. Wyatt should have won by pinfall at WrestleMania. He should have then won the Last Man Standing match the way Cena beat him. At that point you push hard the idea that Cena has to turn to the dark side to beat Wyatt (which would have been the ultimate win for Bray). Match #3 is in the cage to prevent Rowan & Harper interfering (and when they try to they get run off by the Usos). It all leads to the spot with the chair in Cena's hands, Wyatt begging him to hit him. Cena drops the chair, hits the AA and wins clean. He comes out the victor, his honor intact. Wyatt, meanwhile, looked strong throughout, having secured 2 wins over Cena, having come perilously close to corrupting Cena.

This is how they could have made Wyatt the top heel in the company behind Lesnar. Maybe it wouldn't have worked, but it only *can* work by actually trying it. By being as overprotective of Cena as they were they never stood a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Bret Hart couldn't do that.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ....including that godawful Page/Kanyon steel cage match. So I DID waste $10.

That is a LOT of Bikertaker era deadman on this.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Obviously. But what I'm saying is that their 3rd high-profile match at IYH 14 is pretty damn good, too.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Didn't they strip Bryan of the title just a few months ago because he couldn't defend it in a certain amount of time..now if the authority tried to strip him of the title for the same reason and brock said screw you or take it or even just pummeled them it would make at least a little more sense

  62. This email; dr.wakinalovetemple@gmail.com changed my life. I can’t imagine doing this now but I was left with no options than to thank The Great Spell Master Ever that restored my broken marriage. Everything happen so fast when Doctor Wakina rescued my husband from a demonic girl that took him away from me and made him to hate me and our kids, I didn’t know the wrongs that I have done in past to deserve broken marriage that lasted for just 5 yrs.

I want to also specially thank the beautiful people that lead me to Dr. Wakina through their heart touching testimonies, I pray for blessings upon them and their families. My advice to those people who are yet to test this spell power should be careful because 70% of testimonies here are fake, I was scam by four of them before I met Dr. Wakina via this email: dr.wakinalovetemple@gmail.com, I can’t mention their names because Dr. Wakina advised me to forget about them and move on with my new life, he surprised me by tripling the money that I wasted for the fake spell casters.

Dr. Wakina is an extraordinary man, kind heart and filled with powers to see things beyond our limit. My husband has changed to the man I got married to and my kids are more comfortable now than before. I wish Dr. Wakina more strength and health to continue this quest.

  64. And despite being ostensibly the only game in town, they're too fucking cheap to do it. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The point I'm making is they've got a ready made storyline for Bryan when he returns. The Authority was adamant about stripping him of the title because he couldn't defend, yet take no action against the guy who IS able to defend it, yet chooses not to.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Race himself says that he should have been passed over and shown the door. But Vince gave him a chance. All these guys had to have a gimmick back then. He wasn't going to main event, but could at least be on the card.

  70. Maybe with the idea that whoever is the champion after Wrestlemania wins the million dollar bonus, or whoever is the champion longest within the year wins the bonus? If WWE paid out $1m for every title win, why wouldn't I just lay down to lose the title after I won it so I could try to get another $1m?

    ReplyDelete
  71. He didn't beat Cena again because John Cena. You just don't get it, Scott. If Cena were to lose a second time, the entire company would fold as millions would immediately stop watching. It's not like he's been the most protected guy in the company for almost 10 years now and can easily afford a couple losses, especially since he'd likely go out the next night on Raw and beat the Wyatts in a three on one, one hand tied behind Cena's back tornado handicap match.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't have a huge problem with it because it's at least partly the Authority being heels (they hate Bryan, they were the ones who wanted Brock to do this in the first place), but at some point someone should call them on it so they can point out that's the reason.

    ReplyDelete
  73. In what way did Bray benefit? He lost two out of three, and the one he won was the worst beating of all, with Cena destroying all three Wyatts at once and dominating them until a little kid spooked him. That's why. You can put guys over strong even when winning...I actually thought the third match was fine and didn't make Bray look bad even though he lost. The problem is building up to that you had Cena routinely beating up the Wyatts by himself and dominating Bray in the cage match, making him look like absolute crap.

In fact, name the last non Brock heel (not faces, since guys like Punk and Bryan do benefit largely be being allowed to win relatively clean and look like they're on Cena's level) that left a Cena feud in a better position than he entered. Honestly. Who was it? Bray didn't. Orton didn't. Ryback, Kane, Miz, Sandow, Ziggler, Barrett, just to name a few. And don't get me wrong, Cena is definitely not to blame for a lot of them (Kane and Orton are both extremely established and Cena doesn't need to be putting them over strong, for example). Some of them, like Miz, were probably above their head anyway, but Cena can still give them something. Even when they manage to beat him, he has to go out and make sure he has the final say every time. Ziggler beat Cena in a very good TLC match, but they couldn't just leave it there and have Cena move on to Kane (I think...was that the Kane year? If not, whoever his next opponent was) and tip his hat to Ziggler. He had to go back out and just crush Ziggler, beating him easily multiple times despite Ziggler cheating like crazy and getting a ton of outside interference from Big E and AJ.

Why is he the one face who rarely makes his heel opponent look strong? When Punk was the top face, he usually made his opponents look good. He beat Bryan three or four straight times, and Bryan got more and more over, because he was taking Punk to his limit. That same year, even Sheamus...as much as we talk about the 18 second WM win, the next PPV was a hell of a 2 out of 3 falls match that was probably the best Bryan had looked in his WWE career to that point, despite the loss. That I think is the thing that bothers me most about Cena. The second he goes into his finishing moveset, he immediately stops selling everything that happened to him all match, beats his opponent, then runs around and poses like he beat a jobber instead of selling the effects of his opponents attacks and generally acting like his opponent did something to him.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think Wyatt should have won match 1 via Wyatt family attacking Cena. Match 2, if it must be the cage match (I think that makes more sense as the last match, to keep the Family out), could have been done the same way, except lose the goofy "little kid spooks Cena" crap and make the match much more competitive, with Cena losing after Harper and Rowan stop him from exiting. Then you could have done match #3 exactly as they did, with Cena realizing he needs help, enlisting the Uso's to counteract the Wyatt Family, and having a wild back and forth brawl where Cena comes out on top. Cena still wins the feud, but the Wyatts look strong by beating him twice and looking competitive even if they needed to cheat. Instead you got Cena beating him to start the feud, immediately establishing that even with the Family Bray can't beat him, and then had Cena absolutely dominate all three in a cage match before losing only due to ridiculous shenanigans. Which means instead of match 3 being a fun culmination of everything, it was just a brawl "for some reason" where the Usos came out even though it's been established Cena can beat all three by himself, and Wyatt looks awful.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I can honestly tell you that, as a huge Punk and Bryan fan, if they had beaten Bray at WM to start a 3 PPV feud, I would have called it stupid. Despite being a huge Bryan fan, I was in favor of Bray beating Bryan at the Rumble, because I think Bryan was super over (as we would see) and could easily survive the loss even though he would never get the "babyface win to end the feud", while Bray needed a big win to build to more things. Likewise, Bray should have won at least the first two matches against Cena. That's how you build up a feud where the babyface triumphs over evil at the end...the face has to first be down, not immediately establish he can beat the heel even when things are stacked against him.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Does Brock actually draw anything tangible in terms of profits over Orton, Cena, etc?
