WCW Saturday Night was, for years, the flagship show for WCW. Then Nitro came along. The Saturday night show continued to be relevant for time after Nitro's debut, but eventually became a showcase for the Power Plant talent and the luchadores. Here is an excellent match between Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko that many of us may not remember seeing.

ReplyDeleteHow does it feel to cause worldwide panic?
Of all the shows missing from WWE Network from every company whose library they own, WCW Saturday Night would be my first choice to release next. So much great stuff from those shows. Really a big piece of my childhood wrestling nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I didn't get TBS in my part of Canada, but my grandparents did and we usually would get it in a hotel when we're travel. It was always an awesome gift to get to see these wrestlers I never got to see. Really wish they'd get that on the network. Great memories.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing this match and being confused because I couldn't tell which one was the jobber and which one was the star. I wondered if it was supposed to be like when Barry Horowitz would take on Dale Wolf and it would actually be competitive and unpredictable because both guys were on the same level. I couldn't even decide who was the heel or the face so I think I was pulling for Dean because Eddy's facial hair looked stupid. I was impressed with the Frog Splash, however, and I quickly developed an appreciation for both guys once I became familiar with their work and understood what the cruiserweight division was.
ReplyDeleteStealing? I subscribed. Am I supposed to call them and let them know they forgot to charge me? Are you retarded?
ReplyDeleteOnly thing I didn't like was Benjamin's position when he got hit with the Superkick. If HBK wasn't going to throw the Superkick what was Shelton Benjamin going to hit him with?
ReplyDelete"Dew it All Night Long" is an option.
ReplyDeleteFour Horseman vitamin commercial.
ReplyDeleteDo incessant ads every turn people off of the advertised product? I bet 'E is wishing they introduced the Network at $14.99 now.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't have the same ring as $9.99.
ReplyDeleteGood point. I feel the same about that spot Bret used to do when a guy leaps off the top and Bret catches him coming down into the sharpshooter. There's no familiar attack from that angle.
ReplyDeleteAs someone else said, they'll do a $14.99 version that's ad free, because that's a good thing I guess.
ReplyDeleteI understand. Though their product it so niche that had the established themselves at a slightly higher price point, I doubt it would have cut into their initial subscriber count. It would have been easier then for them to say "Save $5 a month to get the ad version" rather than "Pay $5 more a month for something you were already getting at $9.99."
ReplyDeleteHe made a mistake. It happens when you get tired in a fast-paced match.
ReplyDeleteTwo of my all-time favorites. Malenko was as fluid in the ring as anyone.
ReplyDeleteINSTANT RESIDUE
ReplyDeleteI've watched a few things on demand today and haven't hit an ad yet, so we'll see how it plays out. I can live with ads on YouTube, also on several channels I stream on my Roku, so I can live with them if they keep the Network at $9.99.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I didn't think he was retarded, but more like a drunk guy at a football game.
ReplyDeleteOnly if Tony Schiavone is in the ad.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed some of the Saturday Night stuff, even though by the time I saw it, it was a Jobber Show. You got to see plenty of rarely-seen names, and competitive matches between low-end guys.
ReplyDeleteHow do they determine ad revenue, by hit count or by clicks.
ReplyDeleteIf it's by number of hits on the blog,I'm still contributing to that number, no money lost.
If it is by clicking on the ads, I would never do that anyway, no money lost.
At least in the case of this blog, adblock is irrelevant unless you're clicking on the ads on the site, and If you're the type to do that you don't want adblock anyway.
At least benjaminwas crazy athletes and did a lot of spring boarding. I didn't take huge issue with that finish. Was worse when angle came off the top and eat sweet chin or the endless RKO's people jump into.
ReplyDeleteAd clicks, and Ad impressions... so for every X times an ad displays the site makes Y dollars... adblock stops this from happening and costs sites revenue.
ReplyDelete"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" made $375 million worldwide. "Fast 5" made $626 million worldwide. "Fast & Furious 6" made $789 million worldwide. "Fast & Furious 7" is expected to do similar. That's roughly $2.5 billion combined for just 4 of his recent movies. Big Dave could surpass that, though, with GotG sequels, other Marvel movie appearances, and if the next Bond film matches the success of "Skyfall" ($1.1 billion worldwide). Career total Rock does have a pretty good lead so far (somewhere over $3 billion if you add all the worldwide grosses--which I'm too lazy to do). Of course Dwayne will still be making more movies so that number will grow.
ReplyDelete"If integrating ads into video to track data and convincing advertisers to actually buy ad space took this much time, shouldn't WWE have been working on those things before launching the Network so that it would be ready upon launch (e.g. "launch partners" or some better buzzphrase)? "
ReplyDeleteJust add this to the list of things WWE should have been working on before lauching their network.
Clearly I should've actually checked numbers before making my comment, and should't have equated "success" to gross profit, but I maintain that Bond (if true) and Marvel are a bigger deal than anything the Rock's been a part of.
ReplyDeleteWhen did Meekin become the Meg Griffin of the blog?
ReplyDeleteYeah, let's fix THAT problem first.
ReplyDeleteBut most of the shows already have breaks built in. Raw/Nitro/Smackdown are all TV shows that aired with commercial breaks, NXT, Main Event and Superstars have them too... and it's wrestling so there's natural breaks in between matches anyway.
ReplyDeleteWho is subscribing to Hulu besides cord-cutters like me? Even if you wanted it to replace your DVR, you could do that for free with all of the "Network" aps that keep popping up (ABC GO, FOX NOW, FX NOW, etc).
ReplyDeletePrime Time Wrestling was also fun like that. It was the only place you could see guys lke SD Jones and Iron Mike Sharpe pick up wins.
ReplyDeletePrime Time Wrestling would be mine.
ReplyDeleteThere numbers are bad at $9.99. Compared to other streaming services $14.99 is like double.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a mistake.
I think they'll max out at the number of subscribers at about a million to 1.3 million. Some casuals are already dropping it, though. They kinda have to up it to $14.99 eventually to make money. There's only so many people that need old wrestling shows in their life.
ReplyDeleteWatch 90% of the ads be for the WWE Network.
ReplyDeleteA forearm smash to the head.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while. Probably after Paul's most recent meltdown.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to show some sort of support here! Shhhh!
ReplyDelete"FOX turned into a hardcore sex channel so gradually, I didn't even notice."
ReplyDeleteRemember in the 1990s when WWE would occasionally sponsor their own PPV? I've always wondered how that works out financially. I assume they just try to break even and hope for the best, right?
ReplyDeleteI guess the advertising had to come at some point, streaming services need new content all the time and the money to pay for all that new content has to come from somew....oh, what's that?
ReplyDeleteThey should raise the price to $10.01. Those pennies add up!
ReplyDeleteI can never figure out that level of inter-corporate money laundering.
ReplyDeleteLike, Fox was all thrilled to announce they sold the Simpsons rights for 750 million, but they sold them to FXX, which is....Fox....? I don't math.
There was an Apter mag that came out shortly after this with a story of a reporter that went to Glenns Falls, NY, to see what the locals thought of Duggan, etc. He went to a local "greasy spoon called 'Poopys'" and talked to people there and one lady said, "What that Yokozuna did to him was just not right" (or something similar). I'm not sure why I remember that, but I remember thinking it was funny that they went to the effort to write that story.
ReplyDeleteLots of hardcore fans are dropping too ... and I don't blame them. Unless you are heavily invested in the current product, there is little reason to carry over the Network every month. Going by comments here, it seems plenty of people are fine with getting the Network for Rumble/Mania only.
ReplyDeleteDo you think the numbers (at least the initial numbers) would have been that much worse at $14.99? The draw of the Network is the monthly PPVs as much as the archive. $14.99 is still so much cheaper than ordering PPVs that it seems like a bargain. It's much harder to raise prices and not tick people off now that you have established the value of your PPVs, NXT, streaming specials AND archive is worth $9.99.
ReplyDeleteIt's much harder to raise prices and not tick people off now that you
ReplyDeletehave established the value of your PPVs, NXT, streaming specials AND

THIS IS THE KEY. They've spent all this time crowing "only an idiot would pay more than $9.99!" and that is going to bite them right in the ass.
I don't remember what he said to provoke it but I definitely got the first "shut up, Meekin" in. Got like thirty likes and we decided to make it a thing. Luckily, he pops in to say something stupid so often that everybody gets a turn.
ReplyDeleteactually he used it correctly
ReplyDeleteMaybe now they can afford to bring Lesnar back before January.
ReplyDeleteA decent henchman, AND a supporting role in the MCU. It might not be headlining, but it's NOT a bad career move at ALL. Dude is SET, as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteI too, was pleasantly surprised at Dave's turn as Drax. I was expecting wooden, WWE Films level acting, and Dave managed to rise above that level, to being decently charismatic.
ReplyDeleteI still wouldn't want to piss Trejo off...from what I read, he's done time in prison, and probably knows his way around a shank pretty damn well.
ReplyDeleteWe had every right to jeer him considering the shitty performance he turned in night after night.
ReplyDeleteAlso true
ReplyDeleteI hope they give him a heel run with the belt when he comes back. Marvel and Bond is cooler than anybody in the WWE right now.
ReplyDeleteSit on it, Potsie!
