Comments

  1. Lots of sports tonight for me.

    Red Wings at Capitials
    Wizards at Heat
    Giants at Royals

Plus one of my favorites are coming back.

Catching up on my start off the week TV, Gotham and then Flash. God bless Hulu.

Can NOT believe I made it through the last few weeks of work. Absolutely nuts.

  4. Interesting...Cole is starting in Miami tonight over Chalmers. Is Chalmers hurt? Or is he just not favored anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Miami looks sold-out and filled...strange considering LeBron isn't there anymore.

Gotham has picked up, but I'm still not sold on it. This Goat episode I'm watching right now is intriguing.

The Flash is just below Arrow in the quality of storytelling and DC Easter eggs, and I'm all in, just like with Arrow.

I've updated the design, added a few gadgets, including a link to BANNED TOYS on the right side of the page. No ads on my site, as I'm currently fighting with Google Adsense on an older blog I ran that I let go defunct.

Tonight's updates include a blurb about the launch of Windows 3.1 in 1992 and a Japanese commercial for it. Also, SNL debuted in 1975, and I have a clip from the first season. A rather well known one.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Havoc didn't set the world on fire either. It had more buys than IYH, but with Hogan taking his 25% cut, they only grossed a bit more than the WWF. Needless to say, business was bad for both of them at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  96. "Let's see. Two of our biggest stars are out with injuries, our champ is bombing, we're in Western Canada, and yet we can't figure out what to do with the Hart brothers. Why, oh why, are we losing money?"

    ReplyDelete
  97. Douglas is widely considered to be over-rated, especially in his own mind, and an asshole who pissed off everyone, so it's entirely possible they had given up on him as opposed to it being all the Clique's fault.

    ReplyDelete
  98. To hear him talk, and people talk about him, Hall sounds like he has a great mind for wrestling and would be valuable if he could keep it together.

    ReplyDelete
  99. "Why does Shawn's hair get to look nicer than mine!"

    ReplyDelete
  100. "I'm taking my family to the Disney Land."

    ReplyDelete
  101. I guess it comes down to how much creative say does Cena really have and use? I'm basing my comments off of the assumption that he just does what he is told. Which is why I blame the company for this predicament.

    ReplyDelete
  102. If Earthquake squashes Cena, he'd be back the next week no worse for wear and he'd bury EQ by brushing him off.

    ReplyDelete
  103. "Hey, Batista, I think you'd be really swell in MMA...and if that doesn't work out, you've got the look for a superhero movie!"

    ReplyDelete
  104. YES. PWG is so far above everything else in the US right now.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I was at that show. The atmosphere was just death. It was kinda cold and the HHH/Brock match was just sooooo boring.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I laughed way too hard at this.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Not for much of anything.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Except for all those times when he did drop the title to whom he was asked , when he was asked.

    ReplyDelete
  109. And I honestly think there is nothing (in wrestling) that will Cena to explode like Hogan, Austin or Rock did. All three of those men had successes outside the business at various times that propelled them to greater stardom: for Hogan it was at the beginning with Rocky; for Austin it was during his run with stuff like Nash Bridges and movies; and for Rock it was toward the end with Scorpion King (although you can argue his acting career stalled for a while after that). The WWF making movies for Cena to be in isn't going to help him win over a new crowd of fans, it's just going to make wrestling fans more tired of him, and the company's focus being forced into the corporate mindset (bottom line, bottom line, bottom line) is making them afraid to rock the boat in any real way.

Cena has been a great standard-bearer for the company through the transitions of the last 12 years, but he's hit the ceiling of his popularity. The problem now is that the gamble on the Network hasn't paid off and they have no idea what they would do if they lost that steady Cena revenue, so they are stuck in a holding pattern. Who knows when they'll emerge

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  111. I really wonder what the long term plan was going to be for Daniel Bryan. It looked like he was going to keep getting murdered by The Authority until his fitful championship reign was over.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Bockwinkel was a heel, though. If the fans were tired of him and wanted to see him get beat, it meant that it was working.

Cena is supposed to be a face. It hurts the basic paradigm of professional wrestling if they keep backing (and refusing to turn) their top guy who is not getting the desired fan response.

AWA FANS: "God! I'm so sick of Nick Bockwinkel still holding on to the championship! I wish Hulk Hogan would beat him!"
VERNE: "Actually, Hogan's not here any more...but my son Greg is ready to take Bockwinkel on..."
AWA FANS: "Well, I'm not sure I buy Greg Gagne as a threat...but I'll cheer for ANYONE who takes on Bockwinkel..."

TODAY'S FANS: "We don't really care about Cena any more...we're sick of him!"
CREATIVE: "But look! Here's another guy that Cena will supposedly be the underdog against! Don't you want to see how he triumphs over adversity again?
    TODAY'S FANS: "Not really, no..."

    ReplyDelete
  113. There's a scene in the nWo "Monday Night War" episode where Nash laughs at WCW being happy about an early "Outsiders" interruption episode.

"We...two guys with baseball bats...held off your entire roster," Nash said. "That's not good."

The current WWE Creative booking the original nWo angle? Hall & Nash trade wins with Flair & Sting...until a "loser leaves WCW" match at Bash at the Beach, where the third man turns out to be Hornswoggle...

...and then Kevin Dunn complains that Hall & Nash were never over, that it was their t-shirts that were over.

And after his fifth win, Goldberg goes on a big losing streak...as they don't need to complicate the main event scene and they're confident they can "re-heat" him when they need him.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Batista and Triple H.

    Punk and Cena

You really don't think those mattered?

    ReplyDelete
  115. Getting it into the audiences mind is a mistake.

As is comparing the guys you have to one of the best performances of 2000s film.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I have no idea, I'm just pondering a larger question.

    ReplyDelete
  117. People may hate bankers, but I doubt anyone of them wouldn't trade places with them.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yeah, I dunno. I just don't see the appeal in a good guy that never lets the bad guys get to him, y'know? Be rattled, be changed, be effected by other characters.

    Stasis is dramatically boring.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I didn’t mean it in a snarky way, I
genuinely got confused with what the finish actually was.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well continue on. These bigger picture questions are above my pay grade.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Not anymore they don't, both guys are gone.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I think you're missing the point, though. Bret's issue was him being made to look like a loser at all; that he actually looked like a loser, and how, in the end is a different matter.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Except that Hollywood doesn't need or want Cena. The Rock worked out beyond expectations and Batista is working out perfectly well for what he's doing. Being the heavy with a few lines. So Cena really has nowhere to go but retirement.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I didn't claim a victory over Cena is irrelevant, I just think in today's landscape no victory can make someone "for life". if there is not significant follow-up to it, I can easily see someone beat Cena but being back in the midcard within eight or nine months.

    ReplyDelete
  125. That's a rather interesting ontological argument.

"Because it does not exist now, it has never existed."

    ReplyDelete
  126. That's why I want Reigns.

I just think that "Moments" matter, even if it's just something to keep throwing in video packages. Roman standing over a broken, bloodied Cena would be just the sort of thing he needs.

    ReplyDelete
  127. And besides, Sting did the Heath Ledger Joker impersonation a hell of a lot better than Ambrose.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I'd call that a Nicholson impersonation, actually. He was having way more fun with that gimmick than Ledger was with the Joker.

Sting was hamming it up old-school with it, and it was tremendous fun in a really stupid this-is-terrible-wrestling sort of way.

    ReplyDelete
  129. In fact, the first Edge-Christian vs. Hardyz match was also in Cleveland. I was there, and I was at this Nitro.

Also, Scott Steiner got the best heat of the night, but it was during a commercial break, when he said: "You know, some things never change...Cleveland sucks!"

    ReplyDelete
  130. It is well documented that Razor was offered a WCW contract first and he got nash on board as their contracts were almost 2 weeks apart.

    ReplyDelete
  131. i think douglas was already on his way out and that was just piss in the eye for douglas, give him the title for 15 minutes, with no intention of keeping it on him.

    ReplyDelete
  132. correct. He was punished by not winning the KOTR that year, which went to Austin ironically.
