And yet I feel like I must own it, if only to give it a safe place to rest beside my "Be A Man, Hulk" CD that I was inexplicably given a copy to review years ago.
From Wikipedias "History of professional wrestling in the United States"
"In response, three professional wrestlers, Ed Lewis, Billy Sandow, and Toots Mondt, joined to form their own promotion in the 1920s, modifying their in-ring product to attract fans. The three were referred to as the "Gold Dust Trio" due to their financial success."
IF true she should sue the E for everything they're worth for wrongful termination. And this coming from a guy who HATES the sue happy world we live in.
I did. She leaned on the apron and watched the elbows like a fan standing in the front row. That is not reacting, that is watching.
Reacting is moving around, positioning yourself and getting the crowd to actually boo the guy you are out there for. She did NONE of that. Watch other valets who added to the match. Watch Sherri Martel. Hell, Summer Rae reacted to Fandango's matches.
I think if you didn't watch NXT and you didn't watch the early stuff with the Chickbusters you won't 'get' AJ and her popularity. She was different, she was a person who seemed (or was good enough at acting to seem like) a legitimate fan of the product. She acted like a real person would act, and the journey of her success was incredibly fun to watch. And her fans aren't just "OMG, PURTY GURL" fans, they're crazed wrestling fans, which at least speaks to her legitimacy as a wrestler.
Now, if the first thing you notice of her is the love triangle and her subsequent overexposure as Raw GM? I could see really disliking her and her fan cult, but I think that a lot of the dislike is tinged more than a little bit by some latent misogyny. This female is invading the space of men, and that's wrong.
As to her talent? She can clearly talk, she's cut more money promos than most guys on the roster, and as for good matches? She got Michael Cole to shut up and call a match because she was that good.
I see criticism about her because she's 115 pounds, but she's not powerbombing people through tables, she wins through superior speed and technical ability, I'd say that she's got better psychology than a lot of the male talent, and considering that she spends most of her matches rag-dolling, I'm not going to call unrealistic, she's tiny and is pretty much always physically outmatched by her opponents.
Maybe she isn't Daniel Bryan in the ring, but neither is Damien Sandow or Dean Ambrose, and I don't remember anybody calling them hacks that should be fired.
Paige is not there yet either. Always seems like she is having an anxiety attack when she is out there and had to ditch the Paige Turner as she couldnt even correctly hit the damn move.
I'm sure you could, but whether I or anyone else would AGREE WITH YOU is an entirely different matter. Quite frankly I could easily see myself disagreeing with some of your picks if you did.
Again you haven't PROVEN she didn't do any of that beyond hearsay.
Regardless, interfering is STILL reacting, and I already proved you wrong on that definition. Your saying I'm wrong because my definition doesn't equal your micromanaged specifications, which YOU FAILED to specify.
Blogspot is Google. I work for Fansided as well as a smaller indie site (which, unfortunately, went under a week ago) and I just signed on to another entertainment site that will be paying.
I also take small one-time gigs, writing about wrestling and other television shows.
Well why don't you take a job reviewing something you like? Or at least something that doesn't make you annoyed? I just can't understand it. It baffles me less than the smark who hates wwe and complains but never watches, but more than the smark who complains that his armchair booking is better but never tries to get a job as a booker.
I do secretly enjoy this. Shhhh...don't tell anyone. :)
Actually, I write other things than wrestling. Show reviews, movie reviews...trying to break into books, but that takes some time and some extra push. We'll see.
Point of fact: I have been a booker on the WWE 2K series. That's gotta count...right? ;)
I don't know how people can even compare AJ to the other women on the roster.
Paige has potential, but it's not been realized yet. Emma has done nothing and probably never will. Nattie can wrestle, but her personality/mic skills/gimmick are incredibly deficient. Naomi is athletic, but that's it.
Nobody else has both good matches and can talk and portray a character the way AJ can.
Yeah AJ is legit - totally established and easy to take seriously. Paige isn't far off IMO, she looks and acts like she's been doing this for years. AND I'll argue she's as good/better than AJ in the ring
Ichiban Hogan-san. Axe-a-boom-bah!!!!! -- Seriously, those were Hogan's earliest Japanese promos. He just scream Ichiban Hogan-san, and AXE-A-BOOM-BAH!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIUDoX-VafE -- Not a horrible match, but seriously Hogan wrestling in Japan in 2003 was not good. The irony: Hogan's last match in Japan was around the same time - give or take as my dad's funeral that same year. Those are weird moments when your childhood hero wrestles in Japan around the same time as your father's funeral -- time zone differences might disagree with that and second Hulk Hogan wrestled Shawn Michaels on August 21, 2005 - which would have been my dad's 55th birthday. I'm not sure what I'm saying there, but whatever.
Renee, Lana, knew I forgot two. Normally don't go for blondes.
And you don't know who Daffney is? If you like Paige's pale goth chick look, check out Daffney, who basically invented that gimmick. Hell, check out Buggy Nova's take on the punk-chick. Any of those two women do the alt-girl look better than Paige does.
I really don't know why people think AJ looks like a 12 year old, yeah, she's small, but just because Hollywood has cast shorter actresses for younger roles doesn't mean that short=young.
Paige still has babyfat. AJ is super toned, and you don't see that sort of leanness among kids. I'd say that Paige honestly looks way younger than AJ does, too young, in my opinion.
Plus, Paige has a masculine jaw and AJ has dem cheekbones. Also AJ knows how to work the camera and play up her sexiness, while Paige clearly doesn't know what the fuck she's doing. Paige just seems young and inexperienced, and I don't find that attractive, at all.
With you on Lana and Renee - Lana is one of the hottest women I've ever seen and Renee is a grower (seems like a genuinely great person)
It's not just the shortness with AJ, it's the crazy girl routine and skipping around and day dreaminess that makes her come across young (plus the youthful face/body). You really think Paige looks like she doesn't know what she's doing? I think it's crazy how confident and natural she's been after being thrown right into the thick of things. Also, in any movie, AJ is definitely getting cast as the 12 year old before Paige.
I hadn't noticed the jaw until you mentioned it. Yeah, I guess it is a little Desperate Dan-ish, but she's still hot overall.
I think Paige looks incredibly insecure and doesn't at all portray confidence or comfort with being in front of a crowd or on camera.
Yeah, AJ does have 'young' mannerisms, but they're more like a grown woman playing young than actually being young. It's like Cena, he dresses like a ten year old, he acts like a ten year old and has the sense of humor of a ten year old, but I don't think many pedophiles are beating it to Cena matches. That was a really terrible analogy.
And they'd cast Paige as older because Hollywood casts height for age. No daughter on TV is taller than their mother. But Paige still has the softness of a teenager, nobody in their teens is as hard-bodied as AJ.
And Alicia Fox would normally be in my wheelhouse, but she's just so bad at everything I can't be attracted to her. I mean, I find Sara Del Rey hotter than Eva Marie. If we were to look at things objectively, Eva's got a better body, but SDR can wrestle and seems like a pretty chill person, unlike Eva's robotic soullessness.
Well, a lot of what we're discussing is subjective of course, but no way does Paige look 'incredibly insecure' out there man, come on! I know WWE doesn't make the greatest of booking decisions at times but even they wouldn't put the title on someone in their first match/throw her out on every Raw and PPV since her debut if she was uncomfortable in front of the camera. She's a young legend in the UK wrestling scene and looks very confident in her abilities, imo
Look at her body language, she is incredibly tense whenever she's on screen. Her shoulders are always hunched up and her arms are held tightly by her side with the mic covering about half her face.
I've seen a lot of nervous acting in my lifetime, and she has a lot of those signs.
And it's the divas division, do you think WWE gives any degree of a fuck? They gave Carlito some title in his first match, and yet again Paige was doing great work in NXT and England.

So the Rhodes are another rehash.
The "Mexican arm drag" is a misnomer. It was more of a "Puerto Rican head bludgeoning".
ReplyDeleteAnyone else besides me have the cassette tape of Hogan and the Wrestling Boot Band?
ReplyDeleteYou recap Main Event. You don't recap RAW. You don't have to watch RAW to recap Main Event
ReplyDelete"Gotch is hotsy-totsy!"
ReplyDelete"Gotch is a cake eater!"
And in those days, nary a match continued following a neckbreaker.
ReplyDeleteI actually recap Raw for mine and another site. So, yes I do.
ReplyDeleteTeddy Roosevelt was a Strangler Lewis mark
ReplyDeleteScott, THIS is why we come here.
ReplyDeleteWell, that and the interesting random chats.
Strangler Lewis killed 619 men during his career.
ReplyDeleteHackenschmidt did a hitch in Alcatraz when a "dropkick" killed three people.

ReplyDeleteCan confirm. Am Puerto Rican.
ReplyDeleteHow? She's reacting to the match going on by INTERFERING with it, that's reacting to the match.
ReplyDeleteEven IF I believed your definition ,you really haven't proven she didn't react to the matches.
Well, Paige is not over, and they stopped having AJ cut promos.
ReplyDeleteYou like women with manly jaws?
ReplyDeleteShe's probably more fit than everybody on this site.
ReplyDeleteIF true she should sue the E for everything they're worth for wrongful termination. And this coming from a guy who HATES the sue happy world we live in.

There is more to a valet than just interfering.
She is the 5th top merch mover on WWE.com but does not crack the top 10 at live events, which is the bigger indication.
ReplyDeleteAJ has a nice cult following but not a huge fan following. That is the difference.
AJ is not a great wrestler. I can think of ten better wrestlers and ten more females with better wrestling personalities.
ReplyDeleteHow does it make no sense?
ReplyDeleteYou havent been watching it then I take it.

Paige...has underwhelmed. I really can't think of a more uncomfortable performer in the history of wrestling.
ReplyDeleteAnd her matches haven't blown me away either. She seems like a nice girl, but I've yet to be impressed by anything she's done.
