Mania 17

On the heels of the Austin podcast, youtube pointed to the Gimmick battle Royale..... Question is why on earth did the guys go for it? Hayes looks nuts and Corny keen as mustard too? what kinda payday you reckon the likes of Kamala Earthquake Tugboat got out of that? Funny but terrible

What kind of payday did they get out of the (at that time) most profitable PPV in history?  A pretty damn big one.  I'd dress up in Doink's old gear for a $10,000-or-so one night payoff too.

  1. That was a fun thing and I wish they'd bring it back.

  2. how much just to get you to dress up like doink and post a pic here?

  3. "Why would any of those old timers making next to nothing signing autographs at Flee Markets want to be a part of Wrestlemania 17?!!!?!"

Shouldn't there be an IQ minimum that must be met before someone hits "send" to Scott?

Seriously, what a dumb fucking question. A bunch of guys who haven't appeared on PPV in a while get an offer to show up at WrestleMania. Is it worth it? For fuck's sake.

When we wonder why WWE constantly has to dumb things down and spell them out explicitly, we assume that it's because of the kiddies. Emails like these prove that isn't the case.

  6. I'm surprised Hayes hasn't tried to convince everyone that the battle royal was the most important match in WM17 and that he was the most instrumental participant in it

  7. Yeah, I can’t imagine if it was worth Tugboat’s time to get
paid to spend a weekend drinking and reminiscing with some old buddies, and
appear on the biggest internationally broadcast show of all time.

I mean, he probably had some hair in his bathroom drain that
he could have stayed home and cleaned out.

  8. Can't speak for anybody else but I was actually looking forward to that match big time.

Tony Garea not being in it kinda ruined it for me.

  9. I was thinking of something closer to 75 cents

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yep and it was great, I thought they nailed it. It was short, quick and they didn't take it too seriously.

  11. Does this e-mailer really think the random indie fed down the road from the Astrodome was going to shell out more money to these guys then WWE did?

Big payday + massive exposure + wrestling in front of the biggest crowd of their lives. Cmon.

  12. The best part is, these are the emails he likes to respond to over the other ones that would actually bring up interesting conversation and debate

    ReplyDelete
  13. I attended that show and marked out big time for most of the competitors of the battle royal.

  14. Flee Markets are where people shop for supplies when they're on the run from the law. What you're thinking of are "Flea Markets"

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wonder why they didnt have a kid rock concert during entrances and just not announce any competitors. O yea cuz that would be STUPID

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good catch. Shut up.

Yeah, but dressing up in hi old gear for a big payday was an affront to his dignity or something.

It's rare that one of these "Hey, Scott!" emails actually makes me angry (because who has time for that?), but this has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

  18. I've heard Court Bauer say many times that HHH always buries that match backstage--he hated the idea and thinks it exposed the business. You will not see it again. This coming from the guy who allows Eva Maria and Rosa Mendes to wrestle.

  19. haha, I picture Mike Graham doing something similar before he passed.

  20. I agree. I've heard Court Bauer say many times that HHH always buries that match
backstage--he hated the idea and thinks it exposed the business. You
will not see it again. This coming from the guy who allows Eva Maria and
    Rosa Mendes to wrestle.

  21. But dude, the star rating was totally subpar!!! [/IWC]

    ReplyDelete
  22. Umm... Your example/insult at the end makes no sense. At all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey if every reader chips in 75 cents...getting an idea for a Kickstarter now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You should assign someone to filter through your emails and send you only the ones worth responding to.

  25. HHH hated the gimmick battle royal and won't let it happen again because it exposes the business. But HE allows Eva Maria and Rosa Mendes to try and wrestle (horribly) every week which exposes the business more than anything I've ever seen.

  26. I loved the Gimmick Battle Royale, best part was when the crowd hated Doink getting eliminated. This match was filled with nostalgia, even Mean Gene and Heenan on the mic. Bobby Heenan almost being in tears walking down to the ring, trying to hold it together, just happy to be home. Iron Sheik winning simply because he was the one guy that in no way could go over the top rope. Just great stuff and as a wrestling fan, it will always be something I return to. Loved the old entrances, That's it i'm going back to watch it again.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Did... Did this person really ask why people agreed to a paycheck?

    ReplyDelete
  28. To be fair, just because they stand on the apron during tag matches doesn't mean they wrestle.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Paychecks do not pay the bills. Match quality and star ratingz do.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, it's more fun to mock stupid e-mails, than getting a 1000th Montreal, or Invasion rebooking e-mail.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Scott hates his readers!

    ReplyDelete
  32. that battle royal was fun

  33. I'm guessing it's a younger person who swears that they will "never sell out to the man!" And can't understand why these guys would participate in a 5 minute comedy match for more money than they would make in a month of crappy indy gigs. They probably got flown in and got free food and booze all weekend too.

At age 31, with a mortgage and a kid to provide for, I've come to the realization that I am more than willing to be bought and sold.

  34. Upvote for the z at the end of ratingz

  35. TJ: Who do you think should be on the wrestling Mt. Rushmore?

  36. Mantaur, Damien Demento, Ararchnaman, and The Yeti.

    Boom. Done.

  37. LOVE the Gimmick Battle Royal. Should be a yearly tradition imo.

My fave bit when Heenan is sitting down at the desk, adjusting his headset and he says to Gene something along the lines of "It's great to be back, Tony"

    ReplyDelete
  38. By the time the Iron Shiek gets to the ring, it will be Wrestlemania 19!

    ReplyDelete
  39. MORE than willing

"Selling out" is a complaint only made by people that have never made any money.

    ReplyDelete
  40. For the time it was tremendous fun, that was before they'd beaten the nostalgia horse into nothing but skin flakes and a few dead hairs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think he misses the Attitude Era!

    ReplyDelete
  42. For the time that battle royal was great, it was a perfect little cool-down/take a piss/grab a beer segment during the best PPV of all time, wasn't offensive or intelligence-insulting but also didn't take itself too seriously at all, and it was before the fun of nostalgia had been murdered by the company.

My favorite moment was basically anything the fucking GOD of commentary did on the stick, I could be wrong but wasn't that the last time we really saw Bobby before the throat surgery?

    ReplyDelete
  43. it sucks they never used Heenan after that for anything. Now its too late to use him...

    ReplyDelete
  44. They should do an Attitude era edition...

Headbangers, Steve Blackman, Xpac, Chainsaw Charlie, Gangrel, Shane McMahon, Godfather, Al Snow, Taka Michinoku, Hardcore Holly, Gillberg, Savio Vega....Jeff Jarrett?
