So, Brock Lesnar is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and is apparently going to return to WWE TV sometime in JANUARY to hype up his title defense at the Royal Rumble PPV.

Is that even fucking OK to begin with?

It's THREE months without the championship being defended on any PPV, and am I supposed to believe everyone on the roster just wouldn't give a fuck about it? No one would even mention anything about there being a Champion or not?

I don't have a problem with Brock Lesnar being the Champion at all, but are THREE dates so precious that they can't even have him on PPVs to justify him being the Champion? Paul Heyman could do all of his work, and a random guy could be a transition challenger who gets squashed by Lesnar at the PPV for all that he's worth. That will not only make sense to have Lesnar as the Champion, but also make Lesnar look like the unstoppable monster that no one can beat. (I'm not considering Cena's stupid DQ win at the Night Of Champions PPV)

Seth Rollins' briefcase means nothing for three months, I guess. And whatever happened to that cash-in story? He apologized to Heyman and that's it?

I was actually looking forward to a dominating title reign for Lesnar. But it's only going to be ONE squash. One DQ loss. YAWN. Retain at the Rumble. Another win at Elimination Chamber and finally a clean loss at WrestleMania. That, according to me, is bullshit.

They do have other main-events planned, I'm sure. The Hell In A Cell main event has been announced. The Survivor Series main event would probably be the classic 5 on 5 tag match, say Team Ambrose vs Team Rollins. And TLC would probably consist of Rollins putting his briefcase on the line against Ambrose in a TLC match. Not that I think that's bad, but having a title match on every PPV is what I've grown up watching.

What do you think?

It's OK in the sense that "Being Brock Lesnar" is a much more important and valuable title than the WWE title in every sense, and needs to be protected.  Yeah, you're kind of sacrificing the belt to get over the concept of Brock as the monster who doesn't care about, but that's the STORYLINE.  If you start to have people going on TV and bitching that Brock is a coward who doesn't defend the title, it builds up the eventual defense as something really important.

That being said, I absolutely do not trust them to pull that off.  And in fact the stupid Cena DQ was, according to apologists, a great way to set up a Cena-Brock HITC match that in fact is not happening.  So they're already losing credibility with this.  Why then did Brock not just beat Cena again?

I guess the other silver lining is that the concept of making the briefcase into the title could be something that could be explored, but then you don't want the precendent of the case jumping around and becoming just another prop.  Or they could make the IC or US title into the main featured one, but that's a lot of heavy duty rehab work from a company who can barely book a Divas match.  Never mind that Sheamus has been US champion for months now and I have to check Wikipedia to remind myself of who the champion is.

So yes, I feel your pain on the Brock thing, but I think they're trying to play the long game with this one.  Will it succeed?  If it makes Reigns into a star, yes.  If not, then it was a lot of money spent for nothing.

Comments

  1. IS THAT EVEN FUCKING OKAY TO BEGIN WITH?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Cena v Brock at Rumble, Rollins wins title via cash-in on either.

Rollins v Reigns v Ambrose at WM

Cena v Brock in a stips heavy grudge match.

    ReplyDelete
  3. They'll fuck it up but in principal I have no problem with Brock not working every ppv, or even less than half but totally skipping 3 in a row AFTER losing by DQ is weird. I guess they don't want to spend the extra money because he wasn't moving the sub #'s. I do hope we get to see him wrestle Bryan at some point. I really think that would draw at some extra sub's. (For the record I'd be 100% OK with Brock going over, I just want to see the match)

I having a feeling when the q3 sub's gets released its only going to be 700k or less.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 100% agree with the email. I too thought Brock winning would be awesome, but I guess I didn't realize how limited his contract was. Too have Cena win by DQ and Rollins interfere and have Lesnar say pretty much nothing and just disappear is just bad. the Cena DQ win makes no sense with Lesnar going away. Strip him of the title, have a tourney, then have Brock come back and demand HIS title back It's not like stripping him of the belt devalues it anymore than it already has been over the past 15 years.

    ReplyDelete
  5. IMO if Brock beat Cena twice in a row and said I'm done here for awhile that's not ideal but its a story that makes sense and it fits the character. To lose by DQ in a overbooked finish and then just arbitrarily be gone until the Royal Rumble just makes no sense and its not a good story.

    ReplyDelete
  6. If the proposed Brock/Cena title match happens at Rumble and goes last after the Rumble, I can see Rollins cashing in.

    ReplyDelete
  7. exactly. Again, if I knew that he was going to not appear until RR after two ppvs, I wouldn't have been on board with the initial title win, but at least what you suggest also makes sense. I get the feeling that Lesnar will be done at WM. If he's not moving the needle enough to justify a single ppv from last month until RR then have him put someone over at WM, save your money and move on. Another year of "special appearances" wont' work unless it's a single program like Foley was doing in the mid 2000s with Orton, Flair, Edge, etc. And he can't be near the title.

    ReplyDelete
  8. If Bryan/Brock happens, which I think is the best main event they can do for Mania, that adds another wrinkle for Bryan's case - he lost his title because he couldn't defend while Brock coasts and chooses not to defend.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Brock's attendance record doesn't bother me. When you look at other combat sports like boxing or MMA, you don't see The Champ -- be it Floyd Mayweather, Wladimir Klitschko, Ronda Rousey, etc. -- every week or every month. You watch the sport weekly and develop allegiances to contenders and rising prospects, and then every few months The Champ shows up to defend the title in a big event. I'm OK with WWE following that model for a while with the goal of building up Ambrose and\or Reigns as the guy we wanna see become The Champ.

That said, however, I do wish they'd throw Brock some one-off mini-feud squashes to at least get him on PPVs. Jericho and RVD would be perfect for that role: Popular part-time babyfaces with championship credibility who Brock could've destroyed to put out of action for their regularly scheduled time off.

It's been a few weeks and I've been okay with it so far.

In terms of the secondary belts they'd be best off just scrapping the US Title.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wait...I thought Brock disappearing with the title is what everyone wanted? What else did you expect?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I know I'm in the minority on this, but I want to see more secondary titles. Or maybe just one more. I think the roster is deep enough and they have enough hours of weekly programming to justify another title. And if they treated titles better, another belt makes for more interesting stories and easier feuds. Instead of Fandango and Dolph kinda-sorta fighting over Summer Rae earlier this year, if you want those two working together it'd be as simple as, "You have the TV title. I want it."

    ReplyDelete
  14. If you're going to have one secondary belt, stick with the one that was created within your company.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd rather have that than a feud with fucking Big Show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Only if they treat it as prestigious.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well if it's what you grew up with, then it must continue. Everyone's precious little childhood forever!

    ReplyDelete
  18. It should be: World Heavyweight title, IC title, Tag Team titles, Cruiserweight title, Divas title. In that order of importance.

If the Shield were still around, I wouldn't be opposed to them bringing back the Six Man titles. The six man matches over the past year have been the best matches on TV.

    TJ:

As we previously reported, The Wrestling Observer claimed that TNA offered CM Punk a huge deal to join their promotion, which he turned down. PWInsider later denied that the story was even
    remotely true.

Now The Observer‘s Dave Meltzer (via Wrestlezone) has posted a message claiming that his story is true. He wrote: “The other story is obviously true and I didn’t think it was that big a deal since he showed no real interest. Look at common sense. You’re trying to make a TV deal. There is a free agent out there who is one of the biggest stars and you’re denying contact with him? In other words, are you saying you’re an incompetent promotion? It was how many minutes after Del Rio got fired that they tried to get in touch with him? But they didn’t as least try to contact Punk while trying to close a deal?”

Meltzer also posted to the Wrestling Observer forums, claiming a major television network was interested in having Punk host a reality show. He said that it was unknown if the offer happened after Punk walked out or after his contract expired. He claimed that the showrunners went through Meltzer himself to get Punk’s contact info.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think they have the roster to build a decent cruiser division and bring that title back. Kidd, Kalisto, Gabriel, Neville, Kofi, Sin Cara, and the Matadores. Bring back Rey to put over Kalisto for the title in a retirement match.

    ReplyDelete
  21. BTW, I'd bring back the Million Dollar title, with the idea that winning it earns you a million-dollar bonus. It automatically creates motivation for anybody to target the current champ, and lends itself to longer title reigns because nobody would expect WWE to just be handing out a million dollars to 6 midcarders a year.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I could see Punk doing really well as a host depending on the subject matter. As for what network, my guess would be AMC. Punk could also do a kick ass podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  23. According to Meltzer, Punk wants to host a reality show that focuses on beautiful female tattoo artists and alternative models.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, I'm fine with this.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Brock should have just replaced Undertaker as the WM special attraction.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I Have zero problem w/ Bock's schedule, but I have a huge problem w/ them wasting one of his appearances on a DQ loss to Cena. They also need to have Heyman on RAW almost every week extolling the virtues of our lord and Space Viking Warrior god Savior. It's almost as if WWE resents the fact that Brock is one of their few stars that has a "must see" aura about him, doesn't give a shit about there ridiculous BS politics, and has not nor never will see VKM as his Daddy. It's like they want to sabotage this very workable and money drawing situation. The funny part is, if they do manage to passively aggressively screw it up, Brock still won't give a shit. He'll continue to hunt gamma radiated super Elephants on his personal nature reserve by day, and sleep w/ Sable in his mansion at night. All the while VKM and HHH will be thinking "we sure taught him a lesson" while there stock continues to plummet.

It would have to be a very protected match then.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You know what, I'm convinced Roman should be the one to take down Brock and I'll tell you why; out of Reigns, Ambrose, and Bryan, who benefits the most from beating Brock at Mania? Not Bryan, he already had his huge star making moment at 30. Not Dean, he's on his way to becoming a huge star on his character and mic work alone like Roddy Piper. Roman though, he needs the rub. As I said before, the company has got to start trying more rocket up the ass pushes. Even if some don't work at least they put the effort in to build a new guy.

As an aside, I do think Bryan and Ambrose should eventually get World title reigns, just not till after Mania 31.

    ReplyDelete
  29. They wouldn't have Brock as their champ if they resented him. Not to mention headlining Mania 31.

And is their stock price really matter when the family owns most of it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Punk getting paid to sit around and watch gorgeous tattooed chicks desperately
try and impress him. Ladies and gentlemen, when the final history of pro wrestling is written, it will be CM Punk who is declared the winner of the Monday Night Wars.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Always nice to see your email pop up on the blog! Thanks, Scott.

I also have this theory of what should happen at WrestleMania, be it Roman Reigns OR Daniel Bryan facing Brock Lesnar in the main event.

Bryan or Reigns successfully beat Lesnar after a sure hard-fought battle, Seth Rollins comes out and cashes in his briefcase to win the title at WrestleMania!

That will not only draw giant heel heat for crushing someone's WrestleMania moment to get your own, but also be spectacular to watch. The RAW next night would be MUST-SEE TV!

Storylinewise, Rollins cashing in on Reigns would make much more sense than cashing in on Bryan, but I wouldn't at all mind seeing a feud between Rollins and Bryan over the title.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This made me laugh! XD

    ReplyDelete
  33. So you're worried that the briefcase, that just sprayed green goo onto somebody, is going to become a prop...?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Completely agree with the e-mail. I just can't see the WWE keeping things interesting enough without a champion for three more months. Especially since they are so short of top talent to make up for Lesnar's absence.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's not fucking ok to begin with!

    ReplyDelete
  36. No, seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Isn't the RAW after Mania must-see TV anyway? It's usually the best RAW of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmm...maybe Punk wants to be a Suicide Girl.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not having a champ is the least of their issues. They can't keep things interesting regardless of that. Which is why we had a Raw ME with Kane, Orton and Cena in it...

    ReplyDelete
  40. The stock price is the value of their company, so I'd say it's a pretty important metric for them to use.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gunther the Nasty LoserOctober 10, 2014 at 3:43 PM

    That's what she said

    ReplyDelete
  42. Or they could get really edgy and have him also take on Kane, Randy Orton and Mark Henry

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well, it happened to Bryan at last year's SummerSlam, so they could certainly play off of that if they wanted to. And it seems like we've been waiting for years for the MitB winner to cash in at Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  44. In theory, yeah but they can barely remember to put tag teams together or what secondary single titles they have. Do you really trust this company to keep track of a 6 man tag title as well? They'd give it to the shield, never defend it and then totally forget about it

    ReplyDelete
  45. So just a typical Monday Night?

    ReplyDelete
  46. But hasn't it almost always underperformed since they went public over 15 years ago?

    ReplyDelete
  47. A plot hole with Rollins that sort of bothers me - if Ambrose wants revenge and is pissed at him (which is cool) then why does he keep interfering with him before he cashes it in and allowing him to retain the briefcase? Why not wait til it's official and then mess with him so he ruins his title shot and rollins also loses the case?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Not a bad idea. None of the guys you name are likely to be main eventers in WWE, so this would give them a meaningful division to participate in. I would have mixed feelings though if they tried to put guys like Zayn, Devitt, and Itami in.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Probably, I personally don't care b/c I'd never invest in them, but to your point I could see why THEY and their investors would care.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yup. That's the scenario I envision. Not the scenario I would prefer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rey would need to use Big Show as his avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I openly admit I grew up on 80s WWF so I got "size matters" drilled into me. I've tried to grow out of that but when I see a guy like Zayne I just can't buy him as a threat to Cena, Lesnar, Kane, etc. It's why I can't get into ROH. The talent looks like the same people I see at at the mall. Wrestlers should be larger than life. The occasional smaller guy (like Bryan) can get away with it. But when you start running out wrestler after wrestler announced at 185 pounds, it just crushes my sense of disbelief. Which is a long winded way of saying I'd love a CW division to come back. I loved the WCW CW division. But we all know that Vince would crown a champ and then immediately have them doing jobs to heavyweights and in tag matches. it would need to be a separate division like it was 95% of the time in WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'd just like to see one squash every 6 weeks or so and maybe an appearance each month. Film it at his house if he wants. Just keep him in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I find this dubious. It's better to say "We couldn't agree on terms to begin negotiations" with a notoriously prickly person, than to say "Yeah, he just laughed at us and said "No fucking way" before laughing some more".

Also, by this logic, does this mean that ROH, SSW, AAA and any other promotions in the Americas would have been incompetent to not contact him? Where is the line here? Did New Japan contact him? How about some of the British feds?

Meltzer wins if he was right because he was right. But he wins even if it was bullshit because to deny this would be to play into his accusation of being incompetent.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with the emailer as well. Initially big fan of Brock as champ, but just being gone til late January isnt okay at all

They can adjust the contract around a bit, throw him a payday for Survivor Series at least?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Not having a champ isn't the problem; not having any top stars or fresh matchups is.

    ReplyDelete
  57. They restructured his contract already, he'll do more dates but WWE has to be pay out the ass for it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Personally I think they should go all in and bring up the NXT guys like Zayne, Otami or whatever the hell they call him and others and save some money by cutting Kane, Henry, Big Show, and other dead weights they are far past their shelf life. Pay them on a per appearance deal if you want to bring them into put someone over once a year. I don't think the move would make single cent change in revenue and would save money on salary.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ...that is actually a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The other guys need the rub too. Roman is the third best option to go over Brock; he is the furthest away from being able to do the most with it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Some kind of TV title that must be defended at *least* once a week on television, would be good.

I'd also like to see the opposite of this, with a belt that is defended at house shows and on the Network and that's it. Literally a belt that you can only see defended by paying 9.99 or by going to a live show.

Also, if you're a cruiserweight, you shouldn't be eligible for World Heavyweight or Intercontinental Heavyweight title shots.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have faith in Reigns, not so much in creative. I think Brock/Reigns could be a war in the ring though if it's booked right.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Bryan and Dean don't need that type of rub. Reigns does. Bryan can live off the Yes chants and Mania 30 while Dean can just be Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  64. As much as shit on TNA and their laughable promotion and that they'll be dead soon, they are the only ones with a real shot (0.0004%) of landing Punk. Any other NA company has less of a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Agreed but they'll never cut those guys. I'm personally done with WWE at the moment until those three come up. Beyond The Shield, WWE is stale as fuck right now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Would Stone, Rock, Angle, Mankind have been able to get over so strong in the Attitude Era if the big PPVs were dominated by Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, MachoMan, etc whoo worked part time to main event the big shows and nothing else (assuming WCW never existed). Also imagine that Hulk Hogan had the belt in 1998 and went months without defending it, (hey that sounds like 1993). Now why is it so hard to see why new talent can't make it today?

    ReplyDelete
  67. TNA are the only wrestling company which Punk has repeatedly publically dissed. I'd put them dead last on the list of companies he might work for. When he takes a public stance against something, he seems very stubborn. Why would this suddenly change just because they've promised him that he can headline every pay-per-view, never have to work any other dates and have his pick of the Knockouts every night?

    Then again...

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hasn't he dissed Chikara a bunch of times?

    ReplyDelete
  69. No. Hart and Michaels never happen if Hogan and Savage don't leave. Austin and Rock don't happen if Hart and Michaels don't leave. Cena and Orton don't happen if Austin and Rock don't leave.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I like Mark Henry and all, but I have no idea what WWE is clinging to with those 3. They aren't even protected, so getting a win over one of them means nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  71. They need to put Brock in some fresh match-ups. This will be a highly disappointing reign if they actually keep him off TV for another 2 months and waste his return on another Cena match until he drops it to Reigns of all people.

Give us Brock vs Orton, Brock vs Sheamus, Brock vs Bryan. Some good matches we've never seen before (not counting the squash for the former).

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sorry, I didn't realise Chikara had re-opened. I was talking about wrestling companies that hadn't folded and have only just seen that they are back (Back! BACK!)

  73. The Love-Matic Grampa!October 10, 2014 at 4:46 PM

It wouldn't be so bad if someone actually gave a damn that the WWE Title is essentially being held hostage. I mean, I can almost rationalize The Authority not caring, because they'd rather have an absentee champion than Bryan, Cena, Rollins or Reigns holding it (even if having said absentee champion would SEEM to be "bad for business"). But Cena was mad for thirty seconds and then moved on to Rollins (understandable) and no one else seems to give a shit. It reminds me of how the storyline leading up to the second One Night Stand was all about how HORRIBLE AND UNSPEAKABLE it would be if RVD won the title and then took it to ECW, and then after the PPV only Lawler seems to care. Everyone else was like "oh, those whacky ECW Originals!"

I'm not saying Cena and everyone else should go all Angry Dad and walk around fuming 24/7 and screaming at the top of their lungs (hi, VJ!). But why not at least plant some seeds that the title is on Cena's mind (and the mind of others) while Brock is gone instead of pretending that he and the belt don't exist until January? And for God's sake, elevate the damn secondary belts.

    ReplyDelete
  74. is Chikara a wrestling company or performance art?

    ReplyDelete
  75. They should announce his opponent at Rumble now like they do in boxing and MMA. Gives you 4 months to hype it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think they'd be better off just making the IC title the De Facto cruiserweight belt. Put Ziggler in the mix with those same guys and let the magic happen.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mayweather fights twice a year (May and September). Wrestling has the 30 day thing but why not just have the authority change it to 90 or 120 or whatever? Then, as others said, build to the title match for a couple of months. Do some pre-tapes, all-access crap and BAM

    ReplyDelete
  78. Fine, now write 25 hours of compelling TV per month with this strategy.

    ReplyDelete

  82. TJ: From an Ambrose interview in 2010

“WWE is where most of the money is so everyone has thoughts of getting there, but I get the feeling in WWE you kinda have to be an asshole, an ass kisser or be able to shut your mouth and tolerate those types. I couldn't do either,” Moxley said, and pointed out that spending just five minutes with Paul London and Brian Kendrick in DGUSA is enough to make him exclaim, "I love the indies!"

Guess he learned how to play the game.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Cena dropping everything with Brock and suddenly having tunnel vision on Rollins is what irks me. It's like the month prior to NOC didn't happen, and that's just shitty writing. On top of him feeling like a second wheel in the Rollins-Ambrose feud. Like you say, Cena should at least be mentioning that he wants a rematch.
