October Classics: Barry Windham & Dustin Rhodes vs. Steve Williams & Steve Austin - Halloween Havoc '92

Windham and Rhodes were the unified WCW/NWA World Tag Team Champions here. Dr. Death's original partner was supposed to be the late Terry Gordy, but Gordy left WCW just before this show, as a sign of loyalty to All-Japan found Giant Baba; WCW had begun striking up a working relationship with All-Japan's rival New Japan. Gordy's replacement was Stunning Steve Austin, who would leave WCW a few years after this show, and would appear sporadically on the indepedent circuit before retiring. If I remember that correctly.

Comments

  1. Did JR do the play-by-play for this show? If so, I'd imagine he soiled his pants in the middle of putting over the challengers...

    ReplyDelete
  2. Austin ... man, you could see it even then. LOLWCW

    ReplyDelete
  3. Yes, the only teaming of the two men both named Steve Williams....

    ReplyDelete
  4. It's so weird when I watch Austin matches in WCW that JR announces. I'm like "okay, right there, that's when you're supposed to completely lose your shit and talk about "THE TOUGHEST SON OF A BITCH TO LACE UP A PAIR OF BOOTS.' Instead he's just calm JR talking about Austin like he's any other guy.

  5. It's not the $9.99. It's my time. I would pay more for a better quality product / more entertaining experience. To me, it's not, "Should I pay another $9.99 a month for this?", it's "Should I give them another 3 hours on a Sunday night?" And right now the answer is no. And as a byproduct they lose their subscriber and $9.99.

    ReplyDelete
  6. That's fine. Then don't renew lol. It's really as simple as that. Again, not really defending the show or the company, but just using common sense. If you're not into the product and find nothing of value in the Network, then don't renew.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Wrestlemania was worth it. Lesnar obliterating Cena was worth it. And the use of some retro PPVs was worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. We all look at this through wrestling eyes. You have to look at it through TV business eyes. When the cable networks had their upfronts last spring, and no TNA TV deal was announced, that was a huge red flag. That's when the networks line up the advertising for the fall. No TV deal meant Spike wasn't using TNA as a selling point to advertisers. In hindsight we see the trouble it meant for WWE, as they didn't announce a deal then either, because they were still trying to attract a higher bidder than USA. When WWE finally came out and announced their improved-but-lower-than-hoped new deal with USA, that was around the time we should have heard one from TNA too. So at this point if TNA were to announce a deal with a new network, you have to look at it in TV terms, meaning we might see them actually having to go dark a few months, before making a spring, summer, maybe even a fall debut. They've have to be incredibly lucky to get on a network that could drop them into their lineup immediately.

  9. THIS.

In both cases we have second-generation do-nothing's in charge.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Kinda miss when this BOD wasn't so overly negative. I wish I could everyone 100 whores to ease off the frustration

    ReplyDelete
  11. Right - and you're correct. But here's my issue. It's a scary proposition when I don't even want to give them my time for something that's "valued" at $55 in a hobby I love(d?). Every new PPV we watch live is the foundation of "retro" PPVs for future customers. In the annals of wrestling history, there's not much here that will be worth watching "retro".

  13. It's never the individual dumb, it's a pattern of dumb. WWE seems to be putting on a pattern of dumb. That can be distressing, given the company's track record of trying to correct dumb with even more dumb. History has also shown that dumb can hurt down the road, and isn't always apparent at the time the dumb happens.

  14. Whore #56 is slightly too skinny. YOU SUCK, AND LIFE SUCKS!!!!! NOTHING EVER GOES RIGHT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good point. Unless they think a poorly booked promotion built solely around Magnus, Rockstar Spud, Eric Young and Bobby Roode will be enough, because there's no way they can afford Hardy/Bubba/MVP/Lashley or even Samoa Joe and the like by simply existing off an international deal, or some nominal US deal in which they'd get paid a quarter of their current rights fees. It's just not possible because TV is their ONLY income.

  16. This fat whore who vomited on my dick is FINE! (Because WWE sent her.)

Back to discussion of Crap in a Sack:

WWE could pimp the Network again by saying, "Yeah, we gave you a shit ending. But if you watched it on PPV, you paid $50. On the Network, you can get shit endings for a fraction of the cost!

    ...9.99, MAGGLE!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's true, of course. That dumber things have been done. But there is a tipping point. UFC had a genuinely FIVE STAR main event on Saturday night with Aldo vs Mendes. On a weekend where UFC ruled so much, I question why I waste my time with WWE at all.

  20. The network failing would be a huge problem for the wwe. Right now it looks like term this will fail.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thank you. That was the worst thing I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow some people defending that show still? I dunno I outgrew spooky ghost stories when I was 5 but I can get why some people would enjoy them mixed in with play fighting. Still one step too far towards Retardville for me.

  24. The good news is I wont have as much trouble tracking down classic X division matches once WWE uploads them to the Network in a year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm assuming the Steve Austin / Steve Williams team isn't a Superman III kind of thing where one is his normal self and the other is his persona and most base instincts turned up to 11?

    Is there a garbage compactor?

  26. where were they? watching Barney

    ReplyDelete

  29. He requested a skinny white who wouldn't vomit on his dick, but they sent a fat white who did vomit on his dick and that's ok. OPINIONS CHANGE! Vince doesn't know what he wants until WWE does what others says is lame then he comes to defend it. Overly positive troll is the worst kind of troll. Frankly, if he were the type of person who always thought positive like that he would have left here a long time ago. Positive people don't bang their head against a wall the way he does. They just keep doing their thing and eliminate negativity. He's a troll doing troll game. To tell you the truth, it just really saddens me that he doesn't have anything better to do with his time.

  30. I bet Dixie Carter read this and immediately checked her email for the first time in two weeks to see if anyone had sent an offer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. it is like Stephanie got all the worst traits of her father and all his worst beliefs about wrestling and none of the good beliefs Vince has or atleast had.

    ReplyDelete
  32. this is a spot on assessment. You have to have talent to compete but you can't generate revenue to pay them. Like ECW, expansion got them more revenue, but more expenses that outstripped the revenue.

Shotgun Saturday Night will be up in about five years. Los Super Astros in about 12 years. WCW Prime in about 22. TNA content will be about ten years after that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Steph is at least third generation.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Huh? She's one of the best heels in the business. You can't do that without "getting" wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's because everyone has given up, nobody else is trying, so the wrestlers get to go out there and just wrestle.

  44. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryOctober 27, 2014 at 3:35 PM

I like Chris and Ann but they were far down the list of people who comprise the heart of the show. Ann really never quite fit from the start, there was a sense of Creative Has Nothing For You throughout her run.

I just saw footage of Bound For Glory on the new Botchamania. At first I thought I was watching some 100-fan indy show from West Virginia. Sad how they've fallen.

    ReplyDelete
  46. HIAC was one of the first love threads I was in. Doubt I'll be returning to one. Isn't my scene.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's quite negative. Watching Raw and PPVs have become much more enjoyable now that I'm not so engrossed in them.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe that's why I've enjoyed the Specials more than most. I usually watch them and then come on the Blog and usually by that time Scott's review is up and I can comment there. It's just too fast in the live thread and it seems like everyone rushes to make the same joke so you get 5 straight posts of "Nothing says hell in a cell like pink ropes!" Impossible to keep up and watch too.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Damn. The FXNOW app that has every Simpsons episode on demand works on my phone perfectly but isn't supported on my Xbox One.

    ReplyDelete
  50. They're going into their last season, so it's more about tying up loose ends, and putting a bow on everything. Michael Shur and Amy Poehler often talk about how much of an influence Cheers has on Parks, and the final season of Cheers featured all sorts of great send-offs for their tertiary characters, so I'm expecting a lot of that on Parks. And who knows: maybe Leslie & Ben will visit Chris and Ann in Ann Harbor.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh. Well, with Bellas still on TV I can't say as I'm surprised.
    I stopped watching entirely.
Other than the shit ending, and the fact that it seems as if all of those matches get repeated every month, and most weeks on Raw in some form or another, the PPV reads as ok to me.

If you want to take them literally, which they aren't, then yeah they won't be very fun.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, I was wondering about the announcement "in 10 days," too. I even went and found when she said it and counted the days and she missed by a lot. I don't understand why she makes these grand statements so specific. Like, if she would have said, "soon," no one would care.

  72. Yea. I don't even pay attention to the show when I'm in these live threads.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes, I am familiar with your position on those two.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Much more than close actually, that's exactly what they are. I spent 4 hours in one just yesterday.

The only people that take any of the stuff in there literally are the people that come here strictly to bitch about bitching and are looking specifically for absurd comments to hold up as evidence.

I'm just saying, I quite enjoyed HitC outside of that finish and joking around in the thread didn't lessen that enjoyment at all.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Whore #56 is known for her show...her raw sensual dance moves...which were lost on you, Vince...BECAUSE YOU DON'T ACTUALLY WATCH THE SHOW!

Yes, yes...you read the recaps...but somehow reading "sway left, sway right, boob smoosh, back arch, turn and twerk" isn't quite the same as seeing it live.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'm sick of complaining as an individual concept. Unless applied toward pro wrestling, then I'm a big fan

    ReplyDelete

That's the worst part, it's even a lazy troll.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Virgil's Gimmick TableOctober 27, 2014 at 4:46 PM

I'm sick of a few people on here who see the need to blatantly attack others for having different opinions. All of the apologists on here don't even try to make sense. And instead of just saying "Well I thought it was good" and expressing enthusiasm, the feel the need to get all huffy and insult people so see things differently.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Never ever. Neither is the iwc. If you apply a critical eye to any wrestling show in history there is going to be problems. I do remember the WWF getting lots of extra love when they were losing to wcw, so we love an underdog and we love new stars and good stories.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Watching the Ambrose HIAC now knowing very little.

I like his little Urban ninja thing with the Kendo Stick.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Virgil's Gimmick TableOctober 27, 2014 at 4:49 PM

That's the level of suck TNA is at on production values. When NJPW runs shows there they look like an intimate atmosphere. When TNA runs there, it looks like a bingo hall. They could probably make MSG look shitty if they ran there.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Scotts blog really hits a lot of demographics.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I asked this in the Daily thread but you were already gone. You been listening to the radio shows at all?

I completely dropped off, I haven't checked out either in like a month.

    ReplyDelete
  96. It wouldn't be as hard to stomach if he wasn't so blatantly trolling with it and calling out others. I stand by my remarks. Vince Jordan is doing a anti-troll troll gimmick where he just blindly enjoys everything about the current product no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Chan did the exact same bit, but he at least put effort in, that dude knew the shows backwards and forwards and would be overly positive about very specific things just to be irritating.

Vince just says, "Lol show was great whatever it was, you guys are lame." and calls it a day.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Virgil's Gimmick TableOctober 27, 2014 at 5:00 PM

It's gotten beyond old too. He thinks that we're all arguing for the sake of arguing. We all pretty much agree with each other. He's the one who starts arguments for the sake of it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Then once someone has talked him into a corner and pretty much proven he's full of shit he throws up something annoying like, "you're really a sad person." Or something equally not related at all to the discussion that he himself brought on.

I honestly wish he'd just go away. I barely ever see him contribute to any conversation. He's just one giant, contentious headache.

    ReplyDelete
  101. It warms my heart to see white people fighting....please continue on

    ReplyDelete
  102. I have taken to aggressivelu calling him out. We should all rally around this and petition Scott to do the right thing. He isn't someone with different opinions, he is actively trolling and should be banned.

    ReplyDelete
  103. My least favorite white guy is Vince Jordan. His trolling should not be tolerated any further. We should band together to stop this menace. Message your nearest moderator and voice your concerns. For the good of the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Good, not great match from a miserably awful ppv, that had possibly the worst triple main event ever

    ReplyDelete
  105. I thought he was middle-eastern?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  108. "What's 'Tiger' Raj Singh doing in the Impact Zone, Taz?"

    ReplyDelete
  109. That's exactly right. As long as people have been talking about wrestling on the internet, it's been 90% negative. There was a bit of underdog support for WWF during the MNW, but that's it. We've hated just about everything else. Always.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Virgil's Gimmick TableOctober 27, 2014 at 6:47 PM

I agree. It's gone beyond just difference of opinions.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  112. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryOctober 27, 2014 at 9:57 PM

I'd rather see Burt Macklin and Janet Snakehole run either TNA or WWE as opposed to their respective regimes

    ReplyDelete
  113. TNA had almost nothing to do with the production of BfG 2014.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Uh...2010 was one of the worst years in wrestling.

  115. Because Bray Wyatt is possessed by the Devil.

Seriously, Husky Harris got his soul eaten by a demon and is now a husk for the spirit to enact his evil will...by wrestling.
