Here's something different for a change. This is from ROH's Glory by Honor 2002. The venue for this was kind of jarring for me, as I usually don't stray from big time WWE arenas. However, it's an awesome match, and if you don't check out indy feds too often, watch this and you'll soon forget about the production values and small crowd.

ReplyDeleteoften, watch this and you'll soon forget about the production values

What's that about TNA?
Doing endless Low Ki vs. Samoa Joe matches no less. 12 years after this.
ReplyDeleteOnly now Joe looks like he's eaten Low Ki
ReplyDeleteHey! That's me on play-by-play. Thanks for posting this - I've been looking for an Internet copy of this match for a long time.
ReplyDeleteNever understood why they didn't do a big feud between them in TNA as Joe and Ki could have used each other to turn themselves into credible main event guys.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first got into Indies, it was SUPER jarring to see the low quality (my first shows on DVD were the ROH Summer of Punk shows starting with DBD3). But, honestly, you need to watch more of them, because there's a ton of awesomeness out there, and the quality issues don't bother after a bit.
ReplyDeleteSemi-TJ: How did Tyler Black survive getting to ROH, much less WWE

And those clips were from Ian Rotten's promotion so he either got payed nothing or got payed shit for that.
I never have a good reason for anything TNA has done. Ever.
ReplyDeleteThey will go down as the "promotion that should have been".
I'm hoping that Jarrett's learned some lessons for GFW because, if you think about it, the only major "bad" things he did were A) keeping the belt on himself too long (which was understandable for a while, given he needs to put it on someone that he KNOWS will be around, but not for 4 years) and B) the cheesy crap he had going on early in the promotion's history (which I think was just legacy thinking from the Attitude Era). Most of the "WWE Rejects" crap fell under Dixie, and the stupider "targeting WWE" stuff fell under Russo (VKM, anyone?)
If he can stop both of the things that can be truly attributed to him (and NOT hire Russo), and can focus on the things he did right -- the focus on young/new talent, the focus on tag teams, and the focus on innovation -- his new thing could be something special.
Is he going to? I have no idea any more. But I can hope, because if anyone has a chance, it's him. He's the only one to challenge WWE at ALL in the last 13 years. I hope he somehow finds a balance that works.
ROH is hardly massive.
ReplyDeleteBut they've grown a lot since this match.
It's cool to look at.
Or as I know you, the voice of IWC
ReplyDeleteJesus Christ, most of the bumps from that ironman match were downright preposterously dangerous.
ReplyDeleteWorst part is that guy who Tyler fought never made it big. So all those crazy spots he did were for nothing, if his goal was to make it in WWE or TNA.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's right! I actually got to announce Samoa Joe's ROH title defense in IWC (Pittsburgh) against Chris Hero in 2004. That was a great match as I recall.
