TV Production

Hi Scott,

Does WWE realize how stale their production setup for Raw looks? They have been using the same HD set for 6 plus years now. It looks beyond dated and the overl lighting gives me a headache. Watching some shows from 02-03 lately and they honestly have a better look and feel. Is this all on Kevin Dunn?

Thanks

Mostly yeah, although I think USA has some say in how the show is presented too.  Astonishing to think that they used to switch up the visual presentation once a year in the early days, and now we've had the exact same set for 6 years and the same basic one since basically the end of the Nitro era.  Unfortunately because they're so lazy and frugal now and shoot all the secondary shows in the same tapings as the main ones, it's much easier for them to just reuse the same set dressings and put different lights up on the garish wall of LED nonsense to denote that you're watching, say, Smackdown or Main Event instead of RAW.  That's another reason why an NXT show is so refreshing -- it's a totally different visual experience, although even then they're been slowly adding in their gaga like the giant video wall to ruin that, too.  As I've said before, that episode a couple of years back after the set caught on fire was a great change of pace because they had to shut down the video wall and it was like watching a totally different show.  Sometimes change is nice.

Except for those fucking pink ropes and shirts.  Fuck Susan G. Komen.

  1. The Komen stuff is annoying. It's morphed into an excuse to brand yourself as someone who supports Komen rather than the actual fight against breast cancer.

  2. A new set would be cool for what... 3 weeks? Wouldn't make a huge difference. I do miss the themed PPV sets though, like the Backlash one.

  3. It'd be one thing to have that tired, stale setup just for Raw. But now it's also the set for their non-major PPVs, and there's no "big event" feel anymore. It's basically no different than how TNA's TV shows and PPVs looked identical from the Impact Zone.

Bad news, guys. She's been dead for over 30 years

  6. To me, the sets and stages are fine...what I absolutely hate...and this has been the case for the past 2 years or so...is the zoom in/zoom out camera work on the portable cameras...every punch gets a zoom in...every kick gets a zoom in...

I don't know if it is to help mask sloppy punches and kicks, but damn is it as annoying as Hell...I can understand doing it during every swing of Cesaro's giant swing since it helps convey the nauseas feel of the move...

But this quick movement handi-cam crap completely detracts form the experience...

This is the same company that took forever to migrate to HD, still uses monitors from the 1990s and still has the announcers tethered to the desks with wired microphones. So it's fair to say they're not interested in revamping the presentation.

I also wish we could have an episode that does NOT involve some sort of brawl at the desk and Lawler saying "Look out look out", but that's a different discussion.

  9. I miss the ppv sets. I would like to see the annouce team moved from ringside and put behind the barrier. Put them in the spot the radio guys call basketball games from.

  10. People can give for whatever reason they want to as long as they give.

The problem with Komen, I think, is how much they keep for themselves to run the charity - about 23%. The Red Cross is at around 9%. I don't understand how anyone running a charity could accept a half million dollars a year as their salary, but I guess that's the norm.

But even if the foundation is sketchy they raise 500 million a year. It would be better if people donated their money to a better group, but they don't. At least not that much.

So yeah, they're annoying, but I can't complain about something that generates that much for cancer research without feeling kinda shitty

  11. My big issue is that every WWE event now looks the same. RAW, SmackDown, Main Event, Superstars, and all the PPVs are presented the same.

The only difference is WrestleMania... which makes WrestleMania that much more of a "can't miss" show.

  13. This is one of the reasons I love Old School Raw whenever they do it. It just feels different.
