Bad Looks

I'm watching December to Dismember because I hate myself and Big Show just walked out and FUCK does he look awful. IIRC he got sent home/fired or whatever not long after this (maybe even the next night) and it's made me think; what is the worst condition physically that guys have ever worked in? Yoko right at the end looked awful, but he always did. Pillman at the end was sad too. Any others?

Oh man, Yokozuna looked AWFUL at the end of his life, and no surprise.  Jake Roberts after his comeback attempt in 96 was a total mess as well and looked like he should be on the deathwatch list.  Scott Hall in WCW 99/00 aged 20 years in that span.  There was a while with Austin during his bad period in 02 where he looked like he was in constant pain every week (and he probably was).  Randy Savage in TNA was a disaster.

So many cases of it, it's really sad what the business does to guys.

Comments

  1. I'm pretty sure Show's contract was expiring, and he chose not to renew and go home to get healthy. And that was a smart move on his part, because this guy is right, Show looked in horrendous shape at the end of that ECW run. The difference between his physique between the time he left and the time he came back for the Mayweather match was unbelievable.

  2. Scott Steiner in 2003.

He started training to be a boxer (which never panned out), when he came back at No Way Out he looked fantastic compared to how sloppy he looked at the end of his run.

  4. Triple H at SummerSlam 2003...

...ya know, the time he should have jobbed to Goldberg.

  5. Tammy Sytch in WCW. Holy crap she hit the wall fast.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Angle in TNA in 09-10 or thereabouts when he grew out his hair & beard and looked like he'd been sleeping in a cardboard box.

  7. The "You got arrested" era?

  8. Oh, God. Jake in 96. Man, he looked freaking awful.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ahmed when he was in WCW.

He looked LIGHA PHAP PIEB UV SHEEETCH MAUB!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. True, but then she looked pretty good again a few years later when she was in WWE briefly. Before she hit that wall of crazy again.

  11. Oh God I was wondering if WCW was going to give him maternity leave his gut was so huge.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He was a chubby bastard that year. Being so clean shaven didn't help that big fat baby face of his.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He looked like Kirby had inhabited his midsection.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He looked like Barry Windham except without the wrestling ability.

I remember reading when Yoko first started out he was told to pile on the weight as he wasn't fat enough. I've never heard if there was a plan in place to help him lose the extra weight after he'd outlived his usefulness. I'm guessing not, in which case the WWE are partly responsible for a man eating himself to death.

    ReplyDelete
  16. seriously? I never heard of that. I hope to god they didn't ask a 500lbs man to bulk up.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Pretty much everyone from the Heroes of Wrestling 1999 show looked terribad. Greg Valentine, for example.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope! not falling for the bait! NOPE NOPE NOPE!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Even as a kid I noticed that Andre was looking pretty bad towards the end of his run.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I remember a Jake match against Isaac Yankem I believe, Vince made a big deal about how we're gonna see the snake...

Then Jake just abruptly walked away, while seemingly nursing a huge headache, and Vince just backtracked and said "umm... I guess we won't be seeing the snake after all..."

Looked like Jake was on an extreme hangover or something.

  21. I can’t remember if he really actually
looked THAT bad, but I remember being sad everytime I saw Vader in about 98,
when he started looking really small and was clearly depressed about what a jobber they were treating him as.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Was the angle not that he was a possibly lapsing alcoholic though? Maybe it was just kayfabe.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Definitely a smart move if that's accurate, because as I recall Show was arguably the best he's ever been the next couple years.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think the babyface announcers ever acknowledged that Roberts was off the wagon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If memory serves me:

1- The storyline was just lawler playing mind games and trash talking Jake (ala Jericho/Punk)

2- That happened right after WM 12, so it was a few months before that angle even started.

It just seemed like Jake was in rough shape. Maybe it was an in ring injury, or maybe.... ya know.

  26. Chris hero has been justifying WWE's firing lately

    ReplyDelete
  27. Scott Steiner looked fine in WWE until he tried to move.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I started watching again because of Jake and warrior at this time. Jake was fat and battling his normal demons. Which would kill most people.

    ReplyDelete
  29. no no no, it's because HHH is a big meanie, and hates every and all indy guy!! (or so i hear)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I always picture an upside down turtle unable to right itself.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The cool thing is, he was still believable as a threat, because the entire psychology of his matches (even moreso in 1996) was that, if he hit the DDT, it was OVAH. So the entire matches were based on him trying to sneak a DDT in there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Team 3 D looked real bad when they first started out in TNA. There was also a good period in 2009 that everyone from HHH to even Rey Mysterio had a big gut

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love when people said, "Well, such-and-such is fat and they didn't fire him!"
Here's the only response to that argument that matters: Who fucking cares? Hero wasn't told "Hey, get in better shape, but only if we make everyone else get in better shape, too."

    ReplyDelete
  34. True. I was still a mark for him, and in general.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There was a scheduled match for an IYH in 1996, Mankind vs Jake Roberts. Would have been an incredible display in psychology... but sadly, Roberts didn't make it, and Henry Godwinn replaced him. LLAAMMEE!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. This probably isn't exactly what the question was asking, but DDP always had a horrible look. For such a health nut, he always looked like a goddamn meth head.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Funnily enough Scott was in better shape and healthier in his TNA run.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Maybe some peoples metabolism’s had trouble getting off the good stuff

    ReplyDelete
  39. Funny, Lawler once rhetorically asked "how many push ups do you think Scott Steiner can do?" I was thinking "maybe 4?"

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hero's is kind of unfair, as it's not like he's "fat." He's just "fat for a wrestler." In the most recent match of his I saw online, he just looked a little pudgy. Dude was never in the best shape to begin with, he used to hide behind those slimming spandex girdles or whatever. Matt Hardy is another guy who when I got fat comments thrown his way, I was like "huh? Well, alright" because Fatt Hardy is a funny name.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I know it was a dream match on paper, but doubt it would have been any good as Roberts body couldn't hold up at that point. Maybe a match between them in 1992 in WCW would have been pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  42. But they were such good friends in 1992! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_meYszqD5w

    ReplyDelete
  43. Plus until his WWE run he had that ramen noodle hairstyle.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, never knew this existed. Pretty sure a young Foley was marking out during this segment.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Randy Savage was even in rough shape in his last WCW run. He apparently hurt a few guys with his elbowdrop because he couldn't land properly.

Vader looked like shit when he made that embarrassing return in late 2005 and fell on his ass.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoF6nZpyhq8
He looked a million times better when he faced Heath Slater on RAW in 2012.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow.

I kept watching mostly because of Mick. GO figure.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sting is another guy who looked awful in his last few "wrestle in a t-shirt" months in TNA.

I'm sure one of the conditions for him having his last match in WWE is that he gets into better shape.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I wonder if for this topic, we could not count any age factored "bad looks". I mean, it's unavoidable really. I'd say it should be reserved for people who either get fat, or screwed up on drugs.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I liked those teams too, which is kinda weird because they replaced CHRIS JERICHO with the FUCKING MIZ. Still think their name should've been "Shmiz," "Showmiz" sounds stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Forgot about that ass fall. That was really sad. Especially the way he and Goldust showed up like they were two joke gimmick wrestlers as well.

We should really hold this question off until next year, when we can add Hogan’s 2015 world title run to the list.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ha, I actually liked "Showmiz." Rhymes with "show biz." Good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's fair, but Sting being older doesn't discount him having to wear a t-shirt. A guy in his early 50s can still look good. The dude was just out of shape, probably because he stopped caring about TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "We should really hold this question off until next year, when we can add Hogan’s 2015 world title run to the list."

    Oh, TAG!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I always thought Christian had a weird body

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yep, when Big Show ended up being Jericho's partner, we probably all thought the same thing "ho-hum", but they ended up being very good.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Vince thinks he has an ugly face, so I guess he doesn't have much going for him.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Was it Jericho/Show who kept losing Loser Leaves Raw matches every week then kept coming back anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  58. For a wrestler, he seemed pretty skinny, but he looked healthy I thought and had a regular body that most gym guys have.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I never thought he physically looked bad, but somewhat related to "bad looks" is the cherry red Bret Hart deal he wore right before he chopped his long, stringy hair off & dropped the singlet top. I didn't think there would be anything that could make fishnet tank tops look good, but...

    ReplyDelete
  60. No question: Scott Hall at that indy show they showed on ESPN E60

    Honorable Mention:
Iron Sheik @ the WM17 Gimmick Battle Royal
    Jake @ Heroes of Wrestling
Jeff Hardy at that TNA PPV against Sting
