Best Survivor Series match post 2000

Hi Scott,

You recently mentioned that you enjoyed the Survivor Series matches from 87. Is there anything more modern that you may have also enjoyed?

Thanks.

I literally couldn't name a single Survivor Series match past 2002, outside of "the one where Shawn Michaels superkicks Mike Knox and then shrugs with confusion".  It just doesn't mean anything to me as an event anymore.

Comments

  1. What about Team Austin v. Team Bischoff from 2003 which you rated very highly?

    ReplyDelete
  2. I liked the match where John Cena overcame the odds and won.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Really surprised they didn't go with an all star team for Cena. Shoe horn Hogan in there. His team as it stands is pretty much jobber city. The only reason I'll be watching tomorrow is for Sting.

  4. "It just doesn't mean anything to me as an event anymore."

This is so annoying. A few years ago they decided every ppv needed a "theme" or "gimmick" and then when it comes tim for the original gimmick ppv, there's one 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 match and that's it. They should have a bunch of crazy tag matches, especially this year since everyone is getting it for free and it could set up singles matches next month for people to pay for. I mean, that's originally how Survivor Series was. You watched the ppv for teases of the big feuds, then would go to the house shows to get the real singles matches. Instead of literally giving away Bray Wyatt and Dean Ambrose, they should be on opposite sides of a tag team so we get a taste, then next month those who stay subscribed are rewarded with the singles match.

  5. Dude, the 2001 Survivor Series was huge! If Stephanie's team had lost, she would have been out of power in the WWF FOREVER!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah yeah keep making up fake matches, hipster.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The 2001 match, Team Bischoff/Team Austin 2003, Evolution/Team Orton 2004, RAW vs. SD 2005.

    After that they lost emphasis.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That's never really happened to Cena in an elimination match.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It wasn't a Survivor Series tag but he did it against Nexus at SummerSlam.

    ReplyDelete
  10. She was gone 4 weeks! Can u believe it? I hate that company

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes, I was confusing the four way tag title match.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Actually it wasn't even thrown together on Smackdown, it was announced sure but absolutely nothing involving any of the 8 divas occurred on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He no sold a DDT on the concrete to take out The Nexus in an elimination tag match.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I meant in a Survivor Series match

    ReplyDelete
  15. Said it a few times... it made me like Shawn Michaels for the first time in my life. He turned the corner that night.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was rooting big-time against HBK that night. I freaked out when Batista ran in

    ReplyDelete
  17. That's par for the course. I don't think that any women's Survivor Series Match has ever been promoted, beyond maybe a single issue between one or two of the members.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yea, 2006. He was hurt in 2007, faced Jericho in 2008, three-way in 2009, 2010 he was a ref, 2011 he teamed with The Rock, 2012 was a three-way and last year he faced Del Rio

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey, if everyone on here ignored things they dislike there wouldn't be a single comment on here. I shall leave you be.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I really miss the old school Survivor Series where every match was a big tag, but I have to face the fact that the reason they modified the format in 1991 and then dropped it completely was because the shows were starting to tank, even by the declining standards of the time. It was just wasn't a seller anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was shocked that they moved the chamber away from Survivor Series. It was the perfect evolution of the what SS was and could've made the show special. Instead they moved it to a nothing PPV between Rumble and Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yea, but it ended up turning a nothing PPV into a something PPV, so it worked.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Your reviews are fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  24. They did the same with MITB too, moving it from WrestleMania. Those were two big wins because MITB and Elimination Chamber are usually two good shows.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That SD match pissed me off live with how rushed it was. They crammed 8 eliminations into A 14-MINUTE MATCH that involves Kurt Angle AND Brock Lesnar doing clean jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Florida State survives again. When it's winning time they get the job done, the bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kurt Angle was hurt which is why he did nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Umm no one here is being forced to buy anything they don't want but you don't even have to ask for someone to be an asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Who are you to doubt jack Brisco

    ReplyDelete
  30. Be it football games or raping women, FSU always figures out a way out of trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If they had kept the Whyatt family together for just one more month, they would have had an obvious second Survivor Series match.
I love midcard survivor series matches, shows like the 95 & 99 Survivor Series are some of my favourites because of the lower card elimination matches.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah but in the age of monthly ppvs, it would be worth trying the mega card of mega teams again because it would be DIFFERNT.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The 1999 Survivor Series is almost unwatchable. 1995 is one of my favourite shows

    ReplyDelete
  34. austin team vs. bishoff team was good w/ hbk stealing the show

    ReplyDelete
  35. He'd shown flashes earlier, obviously (2002 Summerslam, WM19 vs. Jericho), but yeah, that's where it was like "Oh, right, Shawn was the best in the world and now he's five years older and wiser and not a mess anymore."

My only regret with that angle was that they didn't play up the history between Austin and Michaels more in the lead-up; they had one short segment about it, but that's one of the more interesting "relationships" in WWE history on-camera… The stuff between those two guys from whenever it was they were tagging against the Harts (97?) through the end of Shawn's run was really awesome stuff, and even their weird alliance against Vince while Shawn was commissioner was pretty compelling.

But yeah, that match is probably the single best 5 v 5 SS match ever, for my money. Awesome stakes, lots of subplots, everyone had something to do in the match (even Stacey!) and, of course, Shawn going out there with something to prove and bleeding all over the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Then why not give him the pre-match hardcore holly elimination?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just utter nonsense. Get with reality.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kinda. OTH, it puts more pressure on them to deliver in-ring (which we're not sure they can still do). If it's the streak, there's some automatic tension/stakes even when the match is a snore (see Lesnar last year).

    ReplyDelete
  39. The WWE. He comes in to a round of applause, says how happy he is to be in WWE finally, and then the locker room empties and everyone hits their finishers on him. Then Hogan comes out and leg drops him one last time for old time's sake, and spray paints "WWE" on his back.

Because Vince, and because fuck you for being in WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wyatt Family & Goldust & Stardust v. Ambrose & Usos & The Matadors could have been fun.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It wouldn't feel right if someone wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The 05 main event was good and had a good build. I liked the 09 main event outside of Cena winning. HBK super kicking HHH to start the match was insane.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Her boobs needed tv time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not great, but I actually liked the booking of the Smackdown elimination match because the purpose of the match was to give two new guys main event credibility in Cena and Benoit. I wish they would take the opportunity to create more new stars with the Survivor Series format.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I loved Shawn kicking Triple H's head off too because it played off the other Title match with Jerishow vs Taker where they used teamwork for much of the match.

So to start I assumed DX would do the same and then WHAM!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Agreed that survivor series 99 was putrid. Big Show winning worked out in the long run though with The McMahon-Helmsley Faction forming and they waited for the build of Rocky winning the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Post 2000, I'd say the 2001 main event, Austin-Bischoff from 2003, the winning-team-gets-control match from 2004, Raw vs, Smackdown from 2005, Kofi-Orton from 2009, and last year's Reigns-kills-all match are all pretty great

    ReplyDelete
  48. Do the same thing they used to do to be different?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Eric Rowen gets taken out early in the show. Cena announces that he's got a new partner, but he's going to make it a surprise so the Authority can't jump him before the match. Sting's music hits with Team Cena in the ring. The fans get to remember what satisfaction feels like.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Spoiler to a spoiler: Sting helps Team Cena, Cena then turns heel on Sting because Cena's been playing the Nice Guy Cena schtick for ten years just to fool that idiot, Sting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Survivor Series 99 has a bad reputation due to the Austin being run over angle. But there were a lot of good matches with a great crowd, it was a very fast paced show that never gave you a chance to get bored.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Different from the other PPVs around it, sure.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Lol at the three eliminations in forty seconds sequence. Enjoy the paycheck Bradshaw, A-Train and Hardcore Holly!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Because there's a big difference in star power between Hardcore Holly & Kurt Angle

    ReplyDelete
  55. One I haven't mentioned is the Team Orton/Team Barrett from 2011. MSG was hot for them and the crowd was really into Wade and Cody. Really good match.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey are you suggesting the big show isn't a main eventer? In case you aren't aware he has very big hands

    ReplyDelete
  57. Brad Armstrong and Chavo wasn't the main. Joe Gomez DREW, baby!

    ReplyDelete
  58. The weird thing is, for the past 8 years, Survivor Series has always outdrawn SummerSlam.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If anything would've legitimately turned Stone Cold heel, it would've been his usual kick-wham-stunner routine on HBK after that match.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is a symptom of the overall problem with the modern product (or MY overall problem with the modern product anyway, I understand this stuff is subjective); EVERYTHING is disposable now. Title changes are disposable. Heel/face turns are disposable. There's very little that feels like a true "moment" anymore. The 80's through the Attitude Era had stuff that etched itself into our memories... If you were watching during either of those periods, you can probably name dozens if not hundreds of them (Ok fine, title changes started to become disposable during the Attitude Era, but they were still able to make those memorable moments happen when they wanted to). I feel like in the past 10 years or so, they've completely lost this ability.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Which part is nonsense?
Please tell me any PPV in the last decade that Sting has been on, that had a bigger buyrate than any single PPV that Hornswoggle appeared on?
Tell me what movie Sting has ever been in that was bigger than Muppets Most Wanted
Give me an example of TNA's biggest tv numbers which you believe are higher than those of the Raw episodes which featured Hornswoggle.
Hornswoggle currently wrestles regularly and has even performed in a TLC match this year, what matches has Sting performed in this year?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Because Jack Brisco was as iconic as Sting.....

    Smh.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Proof? Because to the best of my recollection, that claim is Grade A BULLSHIT!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Go look it up. 8 straight years.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You know I think that if everyone did that we would have more positive discussions and less people complaining about something they're choosing to watch. I would like to see that, because it might lead to people sharing more things they enjoy rather than complaining about the things they don't. The Internet would blow up from the positivity

    ReplyDelete
  66. *Sigh* I wish they would've realized THAT before they gave him a main event pay day in 04'. :(

    ReplyDelete
  67. I've said it before... but the only thing that even feels different... is WrestleMania... which is probably why I've watched it a ton. I know I'm not alone on this.

    ReplyDelete
  68. You mean, like, attendance?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Random thought: If the rumor is true that the Rumble will feature at least one ECW alum to pop the crowd since it will be in Philly, I think the Dudleys would be a good choice. I know Bully Ray is still being advertized for the TNA UK tour, but we all know he doesn't have a contract with them. So each can appear in the Rumble and they can do their schtick.

Aside from RVD, they're probably the two ECW vets who are in the best shape. But RVD has been back plenty of times.Seeing them come out as the Dudleys and do a 3D would definitely pop the crowd.

Of course, TNA can immediately sign them back up afterwards and try to leech off their one-shot WWE deal.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The burden of proof is on you my friend, since your the one that made the asinine claim. If you can't offer proof, I'll have to assume your full of it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yet still more talented and charismatic than 85% of the WWE roster.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Considering that Survivor Series 2013 was one of the worst-drawing WWE PPVs of all time, that doesn't make sense on the surface.

Under further investigation, the only years when Survivor Series had more buys than SummerSlam is 1996 and 1997. In 1988 they had an equal amount of buys.

    Proof: http://www.2xzone.com/wwe/buyrates.shtml#.VHEv_cmiFEM

    ReplyDelete
  73. Here's a wild thought...anyone remember how Trips the authority figure got started in the first place?

Because Vince WAS GOING TO FIRE CENA, and that couldn't happen because it was BAD FOR BUSINESS!

Boot is on the other foot now, huh?

So, Team Authority goes over, Trips is getting ready to fire Johnny Boy and his team, but here comes Vince, and now it's HIS turn to tell HUNTER that he's out of power, and guess who's taking over? Yep, the Stinger.

Or would that be too much logic and continuity for them to handle?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I didn't mind the purpose of the booking to put over Cena and Angle, but when you build one team as 5 indestructible monsters and job 4 of them in ridiculously quick methods... it takes away a bit. It was the opener, so there's no need to rush it through on a card loaded with cr4ap that could've been trimmed (two Mcmahon matches).

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm assuming it has to be Keith's.

    ReplyDelete
  76. WHAT ABOUT DOGAPEANDMAN?

    ReplyDelete
  77. What are these good matches? Bulldog teaming with the Mean Street Posse? Big Show taking out his team? The women's match?

    ReplyDelete
  78. 09 survivor series is underrated imo

    ReplyDelete
  79. Holly was getting the biggest push of his career at that point, but they still jobbed Angle and Lesnar clean. Holly didn't need that kind of protection. Save it for the guy who shouldn't be taking bumps and risking further injury.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sticking with the Rumble theme: WWE had a midget bull eliminating people at last year's Rumble, Santino Marella a runner-up one year, the owner of the company won a Rumble, etc. Every company has done stupid stuff. Singling out one company is petty..

    ReplyDelete
  81. Touch your balls...squuuueeezzzeee your balls...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Actually I'm singling (doubling?) out two companies. Yeah WWE has done stupid stuff before. That doesn't make the stuff the other companies have done any better. I really don't see how it's petty to say that one of the NWA's worst ideas ever is similar to a company that tried to have a reverse battle royal.

    ReplyDelete
  83. That's a pretty awesome exchange between Tony and Bobby, which perfectly fits Heenan's history of being a coward, but also hating Hogan, and it happened on Worldwide?

Still, it doesn't beat my all time favourite Tony Schiavone moment when he let lose on Larry Zybysko for not standing up for him when the Outsiders were threatening him, followed by him walking out and not returning for the rest of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  84. But you just did the exact opposite. You don't like Thomas' reviews, so rather than ignore him, you took the effort to insult him. This is hilarious that you made this particular comment about wishing people would be more positive in this thread given that you were the only one bashing Thomas.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'll cheers to this.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Incorrect observation kemosabe. I never said a thing about Thomas hall the person, rather I asserted that I dislike his reviews, as I have many times in the past. The fact that he sells them baffles me, another point I've made in the past. Thomas hall can be a great person, but that doesn't mean his reviews are any good. Thus in conclusion I did not insult Tommy hall, rather just the reviews he writes.
